Joyce Mitchell is a very busy grandmother and loves writing books for little children. Her debut novel, Unheard Cries won a 5-star badge from Readers Favorite in 2011.
This book is marketed for preschool through third grade. I think that it needs to be used differently for younger versus older children. Preschoolers will enjoy the animal pictures and simple text. There is no story line, rather each animal looks at the clock at half hour intervals and appears at a different place. Clocks begin at 12:00 and end at 8:00. There is no differentiation between a.m. and p.m. times. The illustrations are simple and colorful.
Learning to tell time is a difficult concept for most children in the early elementary grades. This book could be used for reinforcement and practice. At the end of the book there are some blank clocks for practice and drawing. Parents or teachers could ask that a child draw a certain time or go back into the book and match a time with one of the animals. If you intend to use the book this way, I would recommend the paperback edition.
