'Even 4 and 1/2 years on from leaving rugby there's value in this for me.'What do you do?
It's the first thing we get asked when we meet someone.
Being a pro athlete is a great answer. It excites people. It's unusual. It's special.
But what happens when you don't have a good answer?
What happens when your good answer is over?
Endgame will help you answer that question. It's a handbook written by a former athlete to help others take on their own career transitions and find a new game to play.
While Endgame doesn't shy away from the difficulty of the task and the negativity around the topic, it frames the process as a positive one, an opportunity to create an exciting new life beyond the pitch. Using a blend of academic research, amalgamated expert advice and personal experience, this handbook asks questions and provides tools for athletes to make a success of their career transition.
I don’t usually read non-fictions, however I love Ben Mercer’s content and felt that I could relate to the contents of this handbook.
It was a very interesting and insightful read and comforting to know that there are other athletes going through the same thing. Albeit I was never on the same level as the target audience, I was in high performance sport for the majority of my life and retiring has been a difficult path to navigate.
4 stars because there’s a lot of info that definitely has the potential to be expanded.
