Victorian romance in a setting of high mystery and suspense
Caden Thurgood, the principal male character of the story, is the grandson of the Earl
of Claybourne, but his older brother Ezekiel will inherit the title. He has been invited
to a weekend party at Femsworth Hall, York County, England, 1879. It will be attended
by many members of the English Aristocracy.
Caden accompanies the somewhat impetuous young Harrison Randall on a fishing trip.
They were carrying the skiff on their shoulders when Harrison released his side of
theload to swat an insect. It was a complete accident, truthfully not intended, that
the boat swung around and hit Caden on the side of the head and knocked him to the
ground. When Caden regained consciousness, a beautiful young woman is kneeling over
him. Something is mysteriously familiar about her...
Caden lapses back into unconsciousness and is carried into the manor. He has a bump on
his head for a few days and is sore, but not seriously injured.
The young woman was widowed Mrs. Anna Jones, who is the handmaiden to the Dowager
Duchess of Wentworth. In the layered structure of English aristocracy, Lady Wentworth
is on the top rung among all those attending the party. Anna Jones remembers that as
teenagers eight years earlier she and Caden were neighbors. They played a game in
which he was the dashing prince who saved her, the princess. Then her parents had
moved away and she had not seen him again. Both missed each other terribly. Suddenly,
there he is, lying unconscious on the ground. He has grown from a nervous boy into a
handsome and very strong young man. Old cravings return. But Anna was involved in a
murder two years earlier. The reader is left in suspense as no further details are
given about the murder. However, Anna fears execution if she is identified. She must
not let Caden learn who she really is...
But the somewhat aloof Lady Wentworth was walking with Anna when she saw Caden
lying on the ground and cared for him. Among all the aristocrats at the party, Lady
Wentworth, being at the top of the social pecking order, must be respected by all.
Lady Wentworth takes Anna to Caden and introduces them to each other. Caden finds
something familiar about Anna, but can't place her. The game begins. Caden seeks
Anna's acquaintance. Anna desperately tries to avoid him while old romantic feelings
rekindle inside her. And why is Lady Wentworth so eager for her handmaiden to meet an
aristocrat?
At the party, Lord Hardasher, a man Caden does not like, shows a fascination for
Anna. Is he a Scotland Yard detective seeking to identify Anna and send her to the
gallows? Or is he a rake enamoured by her beauty and grace?
Mercifully, Lord Hardasher stays in the background as Caden pursues Anna. It is not
long until Caden perceives that Anna is his childhood playmate. They kiss. Fires of
passion build in both of them. Anna fears for her life if Caden learns her dark
secret. Caden senses her fright. He wants to help her with whatever is distressing
her, and she is even more desperate to keep him from knowing.
The plot line makes an unexpected twist near the middle of the story. Lord Bolton is
cruel, a wastrel, and a drunkard, but he is coming to the party and has the power
to take Anna away against the wishes of all other attendees. Anna and Caden flee
before he arrives. Lord Bolton, completely by accident, stays at the same inn for
the night, not knowing Anna is also there. Caden recognizes him.
The story now twists in an unexpected and completely different direction. Old
mysteries are explained and new ones are introduced. Perhaps I should write no more
lest it become a spoiler. The excitement and the fury of the feelings Anna and Caden
have for each other ratchet higher and higher.
The character descriptions of both Anna and Caden are so vivid that I could feel
that I was inside their brains, thinking their thoughts, feeling their feelings,
with a personal high level of emotional involvement. There were a few grammatical and
punctuation errors, but not enough to detract from my appreciation of this story.
As a romance with a suspenseful setting, "If the Slipper Fits" is a masterpiece.
