• What do you think of this book? A thrilling one? With dangerous attempts to save his nation? Leaving behind his entire family for the sake of the country? You are almost there. Alright, hello. Now let us discuss Nandlal Kapur. I was taken aback when I discovered that it was not a work of fiction. Regarding his relationship with the author, he is the grandfather of her late husband, Vijay Kapur. ✨

• A spy who loves his country leaves it, misses it, and eventually finds himself in his grandson, Vijay Kapur. He entered Japan as a silk trader. But what about his actual work? How did he manage all of this on his own? This makes me wonder what they had been through. 🦋

• Nandlal Kapur, a young boy from Punjab, began his journey in Firozpur and ended in Kobe. He is not indifferent, wishing his parents all the happiness they deserve. He tried, just as we all do. A calm, composed, settled village life will entice you from the start. But you can't leave the rage of “they treat us like dogs. We are not even allowed to protest in our own country”. 🥀

• An important part is played by his best friend, Ajit Pal Singh. By the book's conclusion, their bond has not changed. This is really unique. From taking a “revolver in his hand” to marrying a Japanese woman - who knows him by his name? How many names can we recall today? I was fascinated by the name CALCUTTA, and why not? This is “আমার শহর কলকাতা”. 💗

• “I am not a rich father,... It may not be the best or latest cut, but it will keep you warm.” A call made by a proud father. Love has the power to elevate "duties and responsibilities" at times. Yes, if you have that much spirit, they cannot. Vimla was with him. He desired her. However, he could not live with her. I would be delighted if I learned as much about Aiko, his Japanese wife, as I did about Vimla. 🖤

• MCCAULEY, Surya Sen who is not here! I adored the way the author broke up his journey into chapters to make it easier to follow. The writing is simple to read and comprehend, with well-crafted language. Indeed, it is time to give this book a rating now. Then, there is no need to rate. Arrey, how can you rate someone's life? 🫀

"Everyone wants to become a tiger or a lion, but my friend here wants to be a termite"

In "The Silk Route Spy" by Enakshi Sengupta, a fascinating true story comes alive through the remarkable life of Nandlal Kapur. I was surprised to discover that Nandlal Kapur was, in fact, the grandfather of the author's late husband, Vijay Kapur that makes this story not only a historical narrative but also a personal and family legacy. This gripping tale of courage, loyalty, and patriotism is a testament to the power of personal history and the impact of one man's courage on future generations. From his recruitment as a secret agent by the British to his transformation into a determined double agent, Nandlal's story is a nuanced and captivating tale of moral complexity.

The characters in the book are well-developed and realistic, with Nandlal being a multidimensional and relatable protagonist. His transformation from a conflicted spy to a determined double agent is expertly woven throughout the narrative, making him a deeply human and empathetic character. Even the side characters like his helpless mother Prito Devi, proud father referred in the book as Papaji, trusted friend Ajit and many others are equally well-crafted, adding depth and emotional resonance to the story.

The author masterfully weaves historical context into the narrative, enriching the story with vivid descriptions of contemporary society and cultural norms. The writing is evocative, conjuring the sights, sounds, and emotions of a bygone era. What sets this book apart is its thoughtful examination of the human cost of revoIution. Nandlal's story, passed down through family lore and lovingly recounted by Sengupta, is a testament to the countless individuals who risked everything for India's freedom, their contributions often overlooked or forgotten. Through Nandlal's journey, we experience the suspense and thrills of espionage, but also the moral complexities and difficult choices that defined this pivotal moment in India's history. "The Silk Route Spy" is a mesmerizing portrayal of courage, sacrifice, and the enduring power of family legacy that leaves an indelible mark on our understanding of India's struggle for independence.

"The Silk Route Spy: The True Story of an Indian Double Agent" by Dr Enakshi Sengupta is one of the most intriguing reads I've ever read. It felt like I was witnessing the story in front of my eyes. I couldn't put down the book until I finished it.

It's the tale of Nandlal Kapur, a farmer from Punjab, who wanted adventure and wanted to travel. While reading this novel, I was left with many questions throughout the book, which unfolded slowly. He eventually became a British spy, and ultimately to a double agent. His life journey will put you at the edge of your seats. The story that follows is both thrilling and exciting.

What made me awestruck is that this is not fiction. This is based on a real story. The character, Nandlal is the grandfather of her late husband. It's a grasping, fast paced story. The book made me realise how little we know about the people who sacrificed their lives in silence during Independence. I loved reading it.

Imagine a country fighting for its freedom, and the young people are full of energy and passion. Most are choosing sides and diving into the struggle. But in this story, you find yourself recruited by the oppressors, taking the job because you need the money to support your family. Once you’re working for them, you realize you’re betraying your own people, so you try to help your countrymen even while you’re still on the enemy’s side. It feels like you’re walking a tightrope, right? One mistake and you are killed by either side. Forget succeeding; living itself would be a challenge. Imagine the thrill a person would experience when he succeeds in a mission of this sort. That’s exactly what Nandlal Kapur experienced. He was hired by the British as a spy, but after his first assignment, he changed his mind and managed to help his fellow countrymen while still being paid by the British. His life would be interesting to read, wouldn’t it ?

The book “The Silk Route Spy “captures the life and times of Nandlal Kapur, a person born in a lower-middle-class family in the fertile lands of Punjab. Necessity takes him to the officer’s residence in Ferozepur, and the job he secures there takes him on a long journey eastward. Ambitious and alone, this man sets on a journey that would make him rich, tear him from inside, and take him all the way to Japan. How did Nandlal Kapur handle all of this? What was the price he paid? Where all did he go ? Did he have a love life? Where and whom did he marry? How was life in India during the 1920s and 30s? All of these points are well made in this book.

Enakshi Sengupta, the author, is a member of the Kapur family; she is the wife of Nandlal Kapur’s grandson. She did an outstanding job of retelling the story of Nandlal Kapur ji to all of us. Nandlal Kapur ji told his story to his grandson, so Eenakshi ji got the story from him. Now she admits that there were slight gaps, and she had to use her imagination to fill them. I think one needs to be okay with it. We cannot reconstruct the entire piece using information passed down through generations.

The way the story is presented in the book is very compelling; it is tough to put the book down once you start it. Eenakshi ji crafted the story very well. The episodes in Shanghai and Kobe are very interesting. The way the author gives a sneak peek into the characters of the revolutionaries and the way it stirs the battle in Nandlalji’s heart are amazing. You would remember the characters of the book long after you finished the book, the selflessness, the common cause for India, the determination each of these qualities are seen in each of the characters, and that’s amazing. Vimala, Akido, and Arif, you are never going to forget them.

The book does not cover much about Nandlal ji’s life after India gained its independence. I felt that this should have been added. His views on Independent India would be interesting to note. The author should also have mentioned the parts where she had to chip in and add her imagination. These are the minor bumps on the road that would transport you to the spy world of the 1920s .

All in all , I highly recommend that you read the book, it’s definitely going to be a good and inspiring read. “History often celebrates the loudest voices, but The Silk Route Spy reminds us that freedom was also won by those who worked quietly in the shadows.”

The Silk Route Spy by Dr. Enakshi Sengupta is a gripping tale of espionage, patriotism, and moral conflict. It is based on a true story and is set against the backdrop of India’s independence struggle. Nandlal Kapur, the protagonist, was the grandfather of the author’s late husband. This personal connection adds depth and authenticity to the narrative, making it more than just a historical account.

The book takes us to 1920s India, a time of political unrest as the British tightened their grip on the subcontinent. In their quest to quell the independence movement, they recruited local spies to track revolutionaries. Nandlal Kapur, a young man from Punjab, was lured into this world. The pay was good, and the work promised adventure. But as he carried out his duties, his conscience grew uneasy. His love for India clashed with his role as a British informant, setting the stage for his transformation into a double agent.

The narrative is rich with historical details, immersing readers in the political and social tensions of the time. Through Nandlal’s journey, we witness the silent sacrifices of those who worked behind the scenes for India's freedom. He meets revolutionaries, navigates the dangerous world of espionage, and ultimately chooses to betray his British employers in service of his country. His journey is both thrilling and deeply emotional, making the book unputdownable.

One of the book’s strengths is its portrayal of Nandlal’s internal conflict. He is not a conventional hero. He is a young man who initially chooses a path for personal gain but ultimately evolves into someone willing to risk everything for his country. His moral dilemmas make him relatable and human. The writing brings his struggles to life, and allowed me to feel his fear, guilt, and eventual resolve.

The supporting characters also add depth to the story. Nandlal’s helpless mother, Prito Devi, and his proud father (referred to as Papaji) provide a strong emotional anchor. His trusted friend Ajit plays a significant role in his transformation. These characters make the book more than just a spy thriller but also make it a moving story about family, loyalty, and sacrifice.

The author's writing is evocative and immersive. She masterfully blends historical facts with personal storytelling. It was as if history was unfolding before my eyes. The descriptions of colonial India are vivid, and capture the tension, uncertainty, and spirit of resistance that defined the era.

Beyond its gripping narrative, the book also raises important questions about patriotism, loyalty, and the unseen heroes of history. How many unsung individuals risked their lives in ways we will never fully know? Our fight for freedom was not just fought on battlefields but also in the shadows, by people who operated in secrecy and silence, and some of them stay in oblivion even today.

This book is for anyone who enjoys a compelling story of courage and transformation. It’s a reminder of how personal choices can impact the larger course of history. The Silk Route Spy is both an engaging read and a tribute to the hidden figures of India’s independence movement. It’s a story that deserves to be told and remembered.

“Everyone wants to become a tiger or a lion, but my friend here wants to be a termite. People use poison to kill termites, just remember that”

- Dr. Enakshi Sengupta, The Silk Route Spy

Nandlal Kapur (Nandu) was assigned to be the eyes and ears of the British Raj to spy on revolutionary uprisings. He was trained to be an informer for the British by Charles and had to be well-versed in Morse Code. His mother Prito was constantly looking for a suitable match for him. Kapur, born in a typical Punjabi household was raised on a diet of parathas with extra ghee and scrumptious sweets lovingly made by his mother.

“Prito always thought that her son had lovely large eyes that were filled with kindness, yet they also seemed to carry a forlorn look as if staring at something in the distance.”

Nandlal experienced conflicting emotions for the first time when he chanced upon the newspaper that carried news of Lala Lajpat Rai succumbing to injuries. This feeling is further amplified when Vimla enlightens him about colonization of British. Touched by her speech, he helps a group of revolutionaries assasin McCauley during his stint at New Horizon Press. This triggered a series of events secretly orchestrated in tandem with revolutionaries in different parts of country.

The read is segmented into sections that Nandlal Kapur was stationed at. There was a distinct aroma wafting through the pages of the book associated with each place. Firozpur had a fragrance of Prito's pickles and Calcutta carried the smell of mustard oil and Macchi. The narrative is filled with trivia about etymology of the places. It's pace mirrors Nandlal's rapid travels as he maneuvers through his dangerous role as a double agent. The evocative dialogues incite patriotism in the heart of the readers. The story effectively illustrates Kapur's predicament of being torn between loyalty to the Raj and his love for his homeland through carefully chosen instances. Vimla's character is neatly sketched purely through Kapur's faint memories.

“He would have to spend his life with just her image and the sweet memories of Amritsar. He wanted to hold on to them dearly, lest they also fade with time.”

Throughout the read, contrary to the 1857 movement where people betrayed their own countrymen, we see that Indians all over the country were united to overthrow the British and secure freedom.

“When and where will this end? Will I live to see my beloved country free, or will I end up being labelled a traitor by both sides?”

The trauma felt by Nandlal is vividly described through a scene where he's haunted by disturbing visuals of revolutionaries taken away by the British. It reminded me of the introductory scene from Sherlock series were Dr. Watson is experiencing PTSD symptoms as he had served in World War.

In "The Silk Route Spy", Enakshi Sengupta delivers a captivating chronicle of an unsung hero Nandlal Kapur, a young Indian man who, under the guise of a British spy, turns into a quiet warrior for the Indian freedom struggle. This biographical narrative, rooted in historical truth and familial homage, emerges as a poignant tale of duality, courage, and covert rebellion.

Set against the charged backdrop of 1920s colonial India, the book traces Nandlal’s transformation from an adventurous, British-recruited spy to a courageous double agent fighting for his homeland. The book seamlessly intertwines espionage, emotional conflict, patriotism, and personal dilemmas crafting a story that is as much about national sacrifice as it is about individual identity.

Nandlal Kapur is fleshed out with remarkable depth and dimension. His arc is not merely heroic but profoundly human. His bond with Vimla adds a tender, emotional layer to the narrative, grounding the espionage and historical drama in relatable sentiments. Characters like Ramcharan, Jivat Singh, and Asit provide not only camaraderie but also reinforce the emotional stakes and values of loyalty and sacrifice.

Her prose is lucid yet evocative. She paints vivid landscapes from the rustic simplicity of Punjab to the exotic vibrancy of Rangoon, Shanghai, and Japan making the reader feel like a companion on Nandlal’s journey. The transitions between geographies and political climates are handled with finesse, and the pacing never falters.

Her writing strikes a beautiful balance between emotional resonance and historical detail. Without overwhelming the reader with facts, she incorporates socio-political nuances subtly allowing the story to remain both educational and emotionally charged.

Perhaps the most moving element of the book is its personal origin. Her portrayal of her grandfather-in-law’s life gives the narrative authenticity, emotional weight, and a unique intimacy. It is not just a book about history, but a remembrance of legacy of stories that were never told, battles that were fought in silence, and heroes who went unnamed.

The book does not glorify war or violence but instead celebrates the intellectual bravery and emotional strength of individuals like Nandlal, whose loyalty lay not in loud slogans but in quiet, resolute action.

In conclusion, it is an ode to the unsung patriots who fought in shadows so others could walk in light. She gifts readers a rich tapestry of espionage, love, loyalty, and national pride. The book doesn’t just recount history it makes you feel it.
It is a must-read for lovers of historical biographies, patriotic tales, and emotionally resonant stories. This book reminds us that true patriotism often wears a disguise, and real heroes rarely seek the spotlight.

-From the forgotten pages of history-
Review of 'The Silk Route Spy'

The Silk Route Spy is the true story of Nandlal Kapur. Grandfather of author's husband, after deciding that he would take his life story to the grave, he ended up narrating ahis life story to his grandson and it's this story of epic proportions that Sengupta has brought to life.

The Silk Route Spy starts with the ordinary and veers into an extraordinary of thrilling proportions very soon. In the beginning, the reader is sitting with Prito Devi, the mother of a young Nandu who would soon become a revolutionary spy and help the freedom fighters in their patriotic struggle. She is rubbing lemons on a grinding stone and fantasizing about arranging a match for her young son. Soon the plot thickens and contrary to what we had known about Nandu's ambitions that he wants to secure a job in the Post office, he ends up becoming a double agent, working for British government but actually helping the Indian revolutionaries.

Based around the historical times of 1920s, the author has maintained a breakneck pace of a thriller, mirroring the slick spy movis of our times. The plot thickens and changes geography, jumping from the forgotten bylanes of Calcutta to the haunts of the notorious Green Gang in Shanghai, from the golden pagodas of Burma to the tranquil tea rooms of Japan.

I loved the prose in parts, especially these lines- "A thick mist hung from the trees. Prito looked up. There was something ominous in the air, an impending gloom. It was as if deep sadness lurked in the leaves, mixed with grime, dust and fog. She shook her head. Her mother-in-law, God have mercy on the kind soul, had always told her to avoid negative thoughts as they heralded unpleasant events."

Read it for a powerful real story.

📚 BOOK REVIEW
The Silk Route Spy: The True Story of an Indian Double Agent by Dr Enakshi Sengupta

The Silk Route is a spy thriller written by Author Dr Enakshi Sengupta. It is based on the true story of Nandlal Kapur who is famously known as Indian Double Agent. The story is full of adventure as he travelled from Firozpur, Amritsar, Delhi, Calcutta to Rangoon, Shanghai and Kobe.

He was trained under a British officer to work as a spy for them but the world famously knew him as a silk trader. He had the ability to blend in any part of the world he was sent. He also helped and contributed in the independence movement of India while working as a British Spy.

Sometimes he was found it very difficult to balance both the roles and the feared to be caught and labelled as traitor by both sides. Double agent have advantages as well as danger lingering around them. He was treading on the path which was dangerous at the same time eventful.

The story encapsulates his life story. Till the time he worked as a spy he had the world at his disposal but when he actually needed help there was none to support him. The story has been written with the purpose to read and admire the work of an unknown son of motherland.

It is a short and crisp spy thriller. The characters adds depth and complexity to the story. The story will have a lingering effect long after you have read it. I am really moved by this book. We get to see an unseen world through the eyes of a British spy who started off his job as a young and enthusiastic person but returned back home in as a old and lost man.

There are many unsung heroes who have paid for the independence of India in one way or another. And this is the story about such a personality who worked as a British spy for his whole life but also helped the revolutionaries in many ways.

This is the story about Nandlal who is grandfather of the author's husband so this is a real story. The story starts from Nandlal's twenties in his village where he decided to have a life full of adventures and dreamt of visiting the world.

He stayed in many cities of India for his work. The story mentioned about each of these cities and its experiences through the eyes of Nandlal. We can imagine about various cultures in India. Although different regions, the fire to get the independence was same throughout the country.

After working in india, Nandlal was sent to China and was spying on Japanese. He had learnt Silk trading so he could easily make money through it disguised as a silk trader.

In the last part, the author has mentioned about struggles in his life and how he was eager to go back to his motherland. He had never shared his life story to anyone but his grandson and that's how we could get to know about him.

I enjoyed this wonderful story full of ups and downs. The other characters also played great role. The story is equally interesting in all chapters of Nandlal's life. The language is lucid. If you want to try something different and based on true story, this is totally recommended.

This book was such an amazing read! It tells the real-life story of Nandlal Kapur, a man who started as a spy for the British but later became a double agent to help India’s freedom struggle. His journey is filled with adventure, danger, and tough choices, which kept me hooked from start to finish.

What I loved most was how well the book brings the past to life. The way the author describes different places Punjab, Rangoon, Shanghai, and Japan, made me feel like I was traveling with Nandlal. His inner struggle, as he worked for the British while secretly helping India, was very moving. It made me think about how many unknown heroes played their part in gaining our independence.

The writing is simple and engaging, making it easy to follow but still full of details. I also really enjoyed the personal moments, Nandlal’s bond with Vimla, his friendships, and his deep love for his country. These little things made him feel real, not just a character in history.

This book left me inspired. It reminded me that patriotism is not just about fighting openly; sometimes, the biggest battles are fought in silence, with intelligence and courage. The life of a spy is anything but easy. Constantly hiding behind masks, living with the fear of risking life oftheir loved ones, and always ready to disappear at a moment’s notice, it’s a path full of uncertainty, moral dilemmas, and silent battles.

The Silk Route brings to life one such story, based on the true account of an Indian double agent.

Set in the pre-independence era, the book follows Nandlal through some of the most significant phases of his life, taking us across India, China, and Japan. Along the way, he encounters people from vastly different backgrounds, some who become allies, others enemies, and one in particular, who remains as an unforgettable memory.

What stood out to me was the pace and engagement of the narrative. I ended up finishing the entire book in one sitting. The way different places were described, and their role in the overall journey, added a strong sense of depth and realism to the story.
Usually, I tend to avoid spy thrillers, especially when they lean too heavily into politics. But this one surprised me with an inclination towards Nandlal’s personal journey, his inner conflicts, and the raw, often dangerous situations he found himself in.

The protagonist offers a practical solution to a dangerous problem: hiding the consignment in a safer location behind his shop. His suggestion, to keep the bundles under his bed where no one would suspect, reflects his strategic thinking and dedication to the cause. The level of trust between the characters is evident, as the protagonist not only takes responsibility for securing the goods but also offers to help by translating pamphlets to broaden their reach.

The story effectively conveys the risks involved, with the mention of near arrests adding a layer of suspense. The decision to entrust Nandu with hiding and managing the deliveries highlights the importance of every person’s role in such covert operations. The simple yet thoughtful planning, combined with the underlying danger, makes the reader feel the weight of the situation.

Overall, this piece portrays the complexities of working under constant threat while emphasizing the importance of trust, careful planning, and resourcefulness. It’s a compelling read for anyone interested in stories of strategy and resilience under pressure.

"The spy had vanished quietly, just like he had lived, a handsome man who blended into any part of the world he chose to be in."

Based on an inspiring real life story the book is about bravery, loyalty, and sacrifice. The protagonist Nandlal Kapur, a young Indian recruited by the British to be a spy in the 1920s, a time when India was fighting for freedom. But he saw the strong desire for independence and realized he wanted to support his country, not work against it. So he makes the bold choice to become a double agent, secretly helping the freedom movement.

The storytelling brings Nandlal’s struggle to life, showing how he faced many dangers to help his country. He stayed in many cities in India for his work. Calcutta being one of them caught my interest the most. Then he left India and entered Japan as a silk trader.

This book gave me a new view of the freedom struggle. I know and have read many books on freedom fight of India but this book highlights the hidden efforts and sacrifices of many unknown heroes who quietly fought for India’s independence.

And last but not the least, the title fits the book and the cover is enticing.
