Hinemoana Baker to poetka i performerka. Jest z pochodzenia maoryską i potomkinią niemieckich imigrantów do Nowej Zelandii, która mieszka w Berlinie od 2015 roku. Tu zrodził się jej ostatni tom funkhaus. To wiersze o miłości i przyjaźni, ojczyznach i obcości, śmierci i odrodzeniu - zmysłowe wersety z miejscem na humor, utopię i różnorodność.

***

Coś jakby foty pyknięte polaroidem. Nieco zamazane. Innym razem z wysokim kontrastem. Przypadek? Trudno przewidzieć, co zaskoczy nas za rogiem. Damska toaleta z ażurami? Stroboskop? Czysty koks? Jazda bez trzymanki? Po bandzie? Po wyślizganym bruku? Wśród szumu radiowych fal? W pożodze? W deszczu? Od Berlina do Tākaka? Aż wyblakną kolory? Aż odpadnie warstwa po warstwie? I zostanie tylko trajkot bagiennych kur? Dosyć tych fantazji, proszę, obudźcie się wszyscy.

Never thought I’d read a poem titled ‘Waitangi Day’ referencing PJ Harvey’s metaphor of a penis.

I’m choosing to omit a star rating, not because I think it’s worth zero, but because of a failiure on my part to connect to this collection of poetry. I think as much as I hoped it would be something I would deeply resonate to, I just couldn’t – that’s not at all a reflection of the poet, just my experience reading it.

Claims to being "intoxicating" and "indecently funny" had no foundation in reality by my reading of this work.

Luscious words to roll around your tongue. These are poems best read aloud. Visceral, palpable - spiky, rough, smooth, gauzy - feel your way through these quirky, sometimes povocative, poems.
