The Other Side of Fame

Rate this book
Since making his first appearance in the rap duo Fame & Fortune, Keyan "FAME" Martin consistently found himself under the scrutiny of celebrity gossip. His personal life was dissected for public consumption at every turn. Without feeling compelled to address rumors, Keyan navigated life with an unyielding confidence, shrouded in a steel armor. That was until a chance encounter on a random night out with an unexpected acquaintance weakened his armor, thrusting them into another tidal wave of rumors.

Following a heated online feud with a label mate, Emory "HEAVEN" Thomas aimed to gracefully return to the limelight. However, as she reintroduced herself with new music, she unexpectedly becomes the focal point of public attention, now linked as Fame's latest romantic interest. A seemingly innocent invitation sets her world into a frenzy, putting her relationship with the notorious heartbreaker under intense inspection.

When interest in their relationship draws the attention needed to advance her career, Emory and Keyan agree to fake date for a year. Initially, the agreement appeared straightforward, given their complex histories that deemed them unsuitable for love. Then, suddenly, during their shared quiet moments and confidences, adhering to the terms of their arrangement became challenging. Soon, the obstacles that once prevented them from being together became insignificant.

Will Emory and Keyan call it quits before their agreement unravels explosively, or will they submit to the emotional consequences of their choices?

What a beautiful side to see 🥺🔑❤️

Heaven (Emory) and Fame (Keyon) were a beautiful love story to unfold and fake dating tropes are not usually my favorite to read but D.Rose did her big one with this couple! This book had lots of layers and parallels between the main couple fighting something from their past and holding back on their future because of their past. Them being artists in the spotlight added to the layer of conflict that could and would occur. Perception is everything and these two didn’t realize faking it with each other would change others perception of them. These two had a journey to the other side of their situation and the growth of each of them individually was beautiful to see. I don’t want to spoil the plot for this story but highly recommend you take a read and go on this journey of Fame and Heaven. Too many moments of me smiling at their interactions, mouth open at revelations, nervous about outside forces and the emotions of them both being vulnerable with the other. The love read strong! Ugh, this was sooo good! Very unique and unconventional love story! I can’t wait to see what D. Rose has coming out next! Oh, and one of my favorite moments (mini spoiler) was her giving him the 🔑. 🥺😭❤️ ugh!!! One of so many beautiful moments!!

Fake dating, maybe

I like it when a story opens with a ballsy beat, the guitars come in and and then the rhythm takes control. That is how the author made this storyline resonate with me. Yes, it was about the couple in a fake relationship, but it was also about musical acts and performances. The author gave us some catchy names, too, with Fame and Fortune, Heaven, Puma, Midnight, and a few others. Fame was the playboy in this story with a slew of women to prove his point. Heaven was a few years removed from her breakup with her manager and abusive ex. Don't get me started with cheaters who get another woman pregnant while in a relationship already. Let's talk about the fake relationship. The fake relationship was never fake for me because Emory and Keyan always behaved like a real couple. Watching Key and Emory bond and blend families were like weaving intimate acts of kindness. Key tried to be the man for boutycallcentral, and oddly, he was no longer, 'that man.' Heaven changed his outlook, and in return, they grew stronger together. I loved, loved this story.

This was one of my most anticipated reads this year and, D.Rose? You did you’re big one. Yup! I’m not fake dating trope kind of girl – I don’t hate or love it - but this book did the trope right. If you’re going to do it, a publicity stunt is always the way to go, but that’s just me! I also really liked this story because even though their relationship to the public started out fake, their relationship was always sincere and genuine even when no one was watching. Keyan and Emory developed a true friendship with each other and pushed other in their careers. They were always themselves and they were exactly what they needed for each other. Both had drama from their past and never judged each other for it. They truly rode for each other no matter what. I think that’s what made the developing relationship really feel special to me.

Pretending it Ain’t Real

I so enjoyed the developed friendship that came with no real expectations, just genuine effort from both parties. “Fake vs Real”…. is there a difference when the heart got involved? This is my first read for this author, but I’m all in for more. I’d love to have Nicole’s story and Ox if he gets another chance. 💜💚💛

Fame and Heaven

I really enjoyed this book from beginning to end. I think the title was perfect because we truly got to see the other side of Fame. This man was about his business but was also so genuine and giving to the people in his life. You could tell that gift giving and quality time were his true love languages. I loved that Heaven gave him a chance even though she kept her walls up for longer than I thought necessary based on his actions, but I can’t say I didn’t understand. I also loved how these two created a genuine friendship and became a safe space for each other despite their fake dating situation. While they agreed to fake date, everything about their connection, chemistry and bond and even their dates were anything but fake. I would definitely recommend this story and I wouldn’t mind an update on these two as well.

✨Book Review✨

🎉🎉 Get ready to give a standing ovation to this book!! Have you ever finished a story and immediately felt the pull to dive back in? That’s exactly how this one captured my heart! I’m still battling the temptation to flip those pages again. **Fame and Heaven** gave me ALL THE FEELS!!!

Meet Fame (Keyan) Martin, one half of the dynamic rap duo Fame & Fortune. Being part of a successful group comes with its fair share of critics, but Keyan brushes off the noise. His confidence is unshakeable, and his self-assurance is like armor.

But things take a turn when he crosses paths with a fellow artist. Their chance encounter ignites a whirlwind of rumors about his new love interest!

Enter Emory (Heaven) Thomas, on a mission to reclaim her spot in the music scene. After a tough battle with her label, she’s determined to make a splash this time. However, being dubbed as Fame’s new love has thrust her into the media spotlight. So, in a clever twist, Emory proposes a fake dating relationship with Keyan for a year, and he jumps at the chance!

Though they label their relationship as “fake,” the connection they share is anything but! Watching them support each other, affirming one another with every moment, is absolutely breathtaking. Emory’s past has built up walls around her heart, but I love that she doesn’t let old wounds stop her from opening up to Keyan.

Keyan “Fame” Martin is a true gem! Carrying a heavy load on his shoulders, it’s understandable why he shied away from serious relationships. But despite everything weighing him down, the way he shows up for Emory is simply heartwarming. Their journey together is a beautiful ride that you won’t want to miss! 🌟❤️

Some of my favorite parts:

3.5 stars ⭐️

The fake dating trope in a romance book always grabs my attention, especially when mixed with music industry vibes. That's why I was immediately drawn to "The Other Side of Fame." This book perfectly captures the essence of perfect timing, as Fame (Keyon) and Heaven (Emory) find their paths finally aligning even though they are under the management of the same person. A chance encounter in the studio sets them on a path of a mutually beneficial fake relationship.I love me some Fame! Despite his admission of not excelling in relationships. He makes a conscious effort to be the best boyfriend he can be, never shying away from apologizing when he makes mistakes. Emory is equally impressive, rebuilding herself after a tough breakup. She is focused on her family, her business, and recognizes the advantages of aligning herself with Fame. As a boss in her own right, she seizes the opportunity presented to her. The chemistry between Fame and Heaven feels genuine from the start, despite their initial walls hindering their true feelings. Even though the story is a slow burn, it managed to keep me engaged until around the 40% mark. That’s when the story starts to lose steam for me. The dialogue becomes wordy, and the characters seem stuck in their heads, slowing down the story. One significant issue is the lack of fleshed-out important scenes on the page. The author often tells rather than shows, not allowing me to delve deeper into pivotal moments. Additionally, plot points involving Fame's parents feel underdeveloped, and the storyline with Heaven's ex lacks the climactic resolution. Despite these shortcomings, "The Other Side of Fame" is a decent read and I look forward to exploring more from this universe and this author.

Fame 🫶🏼

In "The Other Side of Fame," D. Rose crafts a compelling narrative that delves into the complexities of celebrity life, the blurred lines between public persona and private self, and the transformative power of genuine connection. The story follows Keyan "FAME" Martin and Emory "HEAVEN" Thomas, two individuals navigating the treacherous waters of fame and media scrutiny, and explores themes of identity, vulnerability, and the search for authenticity in an industry dominated by illusion.

Keyan "FAME" Martin's journey is a striking examination of the pressure that comes with living under constant public scrutiny. As a member of the rap duo Fame & Fortune, Keyan's every move is dissected by the media, creating an almost impenetrable barrier around his true self. His unyielding confidence and 'steel armor' serve as a defense mechanism against the invasive gaze of the public. However, a chance encounter with an unexpected acquaintance begins to chip away at this facade, revealing a more vulnerable and relatable side of Keyan. This shift not only humanizes him but also sets the stage for the central conflict of the novel: the tension between maintaining a public image and embracing personal authenticity.

Emory "HEAVEN" Thomas, on the other hand, is portrayed as a resilient artist attempting to reclaim her place in the spotlight after a heated online feud. Her reentry into the public eye is complicated by the sudden attention surrounding her rumored romantic involvement with Keyan. What begins as a strategic move to boost her career through a fake dating arrangement quickly spirals into a deeply emotional and complex relationship. Emory's story is a poignant exploration of how personal and professional aspirations can become entangled, and how the pursuit of fame can often lead to unexpected and life-altering consequences.

The theme of fake dating serves as a powerful narrative device that allows D. Rose to explore the characters' inner lives and the evolving dynamics of their relationship. What starts as a calculated agreement to manipulate public perception gradually transforms into a genuine connection, challenging both Emory and Keyan to confront their own insecurities and desires. The evolution of their relationship highlights the delicate balance between personal ambition and emotional fulfillment, raising questions about what truly matters in the pursuit of success.

D. Rose's portrayal of the media's influence on personal relationships is both insightful and critical. The incessant rumors and public scrutiny that Emory and Keyan face underscore the invasive nature of fame, and how it can distort and amplify personal issues. This aspect of the novel provides a sobering commentary on the reality of living in the spotlight, and the often unseen toll it takes on those subjected to its relentless glare.

"The Other Side of Fame" ultimately asks whether Emory and Keyan can transcend the superficiality of their initial arrangement and build a relationship based on genuine emotion and mutual respect. The obstacles they face—both external and internal—serve as a testament to the resilience required to navigate love and ambition in the modern age.

In conclusion, "The Other Side of Fame" is a captivating and thought-provoking novel that delves deep into the personal and professional challenges faced by those in the public eye. Through the intricate development of its protagonists and the exploration of themes like identity, vulnerability, and authenticity, D. Rose delivers a powerful story that resonates with readers long after the final page. Emory and Keyan's journey is a reminder of the enduring human quest for connection and the courage it takes to embrace one's true self, even under the harshest of spotlights.

The Other Side of Fame by D. Rose was such a fun read for me. I love urban romance novels with a lot of good character development. The sub-genre gets so much hate that when I see authors, like D. Rose, writing diverse, complex characters in engaging stories, I have to include it in my book review.

This is my first book from D. Rose, but it won't be the last. In The Other Side of Fame, we meet Fame and Heaven, two musicians grappling with family drama, self-love, and relationships all in the public eye. D. Rose writes two characters that we want the absolute best for! I give The Other Side of Fame 4+ stars because it is an engaging and interesting slow burn with likable and dynamic characters. I didn't think that I was a "slow burn" reader but D. Rose may have changed that for me.

Final Rating: 4.25 stars

Two Stars Align
This book brought me so much joy. A flirtation turns into friendship and then into a soul deep connection. This slow burn has tension, humor, heart, and heat. When the flame between Fame and Heaven finally ignites, be prepared for the inferno. Their love builds gradually. It is intentional and reverent and undeniable. A beautiful melding of souls.

Fame looks like a "goodtime guy." Someone that doesn't do relationships or take things too seriously. Although he does believe in living in the moment and enjoying life to the fullest, he is so much more than what the world sees. He is caring, compassionate, generous, loyal, and thoughtful. Before he even realizes the truth of his feelings for Emory "Heaven" Thomas, he is ten toes down.

Heaven has been through some heavy trials in her personal life. One of these played out in the media and left her on shaky ground. In the midst of finding her footing, Kenyan "Fame" Martin sparks a shift in her mindset. Their friendship helps her become more confident and determined of her path.

These two souls were meant to align. They are like the sun and the moon, both essential and bright. They shine individually and complement each other brilliantly.

Fame for President

If D. Rose write it, I’ma read it!! 🤍

Emory & Keyan’s read was sensual and so intimate. It just read so delicately. Such a good Black Contemporary Romance.

For the right one, he will and boy did “Fame” do it all willingly. They claimed to fake date but did they really even stand a chance?

The pacing was just right for me, the story telling was so good. I would call this a mid-burn, the intimacy hit at such a good time that it kept me hooked.

The way D showcased this couple dating and gradually falling for each other even tho I kept saying “don’t piss me off with that fake relationship sh*t.” lol Get into this beautiful love story between to characters who deserve every thing!

Seeing is believing!

It was refreshing to read about a male lead character that from the start…defied all the “f*ck boy” characterizations and instead, gave us a genuine, caring, giving gentleman who at times made a few questionable choices. (Blame it on that mom and dad). Fame was a textbook example of “don’t believe everything you read on social media.” And that’s what Heaven ultimately discovered when she finally decided to trust what she actually saw with her own eyes.

Overall the relationship between Fame and Heaven was cute , but somehow I was just bored with all the music industry talk. Most of the relationship felt secondary to me. I also felt like the author did a lot of information dumping about tons of secondary characters. There was also too much off page content that I wish was shown more to make me more connected.

3⭐️ and 2🌶️

Fake dating is one of my favorite tropes. Unfortunately, there was just something missing for me with this one.
We meet Fame and Heaven, two people connected through the music industry. I almost thought it was going to be a fake dating situation but he has a girl on the side as well and honestly, although that is quite messy, it would've been more entertaining than the story we received.

You do kind of start the story thinking he was going to be this major player and he's not, he's not what the industry or social media portrays him as and Heaven has to navigate learning that about him and she does it well - although she was head over heels from page one so I don't think it was a challenge for her to go through

This book talks to us A LOT. These characters are very reflective in their thoughts. There's a lot of talking to us as the readers from the main characters and not a lot of dialogue to each other or in general. For example, the FMC will ask the MMC a question and instead of answering her, he'll give us the most detailed, 3 page (literally) answer in his head and then his answer to her will be "Because that's the way it is." And to me, it's frustrating because why do WE need to know all of that? Tell it to her! At times I was reading 8+ pages of the MCs explaining their lives, feelings, daily activities, etc to us without dialogue between anyone else.

There's no question with Fame and Heaven, they both want each other, that's clear because they talk in their heads a lot about it, but they won't tell each other and again, that's frustrating.

Here's my question, you're expressing your feelings to each other, you talk every day, you're only having sex with each other, you communicate fairly well, you go on dates, you spend quality time together, you have favorite movies and traditions and you're presenting to the world that yall are a real couple - what about this isn't a real relationship? If you all decide right now that this is real, what would change??
This one came highly recommended and throughout the story I was waiting for the wow factor to hit and it never did for me.

I am all in the fake dating genre this month. :)   Another book has dropped into my reading list, with elements of fake dating before real love falls into place.

The Other Side of Fame is a story of two entertainers who decide to try fake dating to influence their social media presence and hopefully increase album sales; neither is looking for a relationship.

Keyan, aka Fame, is a rapper who has established himself with his songs. However, this celebrity comes with a price: the gossip columns and paparazzi follow his every move and speculate on every person he is seen with.  Fame has chosen not to acknowledge any gossip.

Emory, known by the stage name Heaven, is a new singer on the scene.  After debuting her first song, she engaged in a vicious online fuel and decided to take a break from singing.  Now, two years later she has returned to the scene and is about to release her first album.

Heaven and Fame, have some serious chemistry. They see each other around, but when they are in the same recording studio, the fireworks start to take off.  One night, while hanging out, causes the paparazzi to call them a couple.  They both decide to use this to increase their followers, hopefully translating to increased music streams.  This fake dating is supposed to last for one year.

Can two people who are not interested in a relationship but are playing a role for the public escape their own chemistry?  This story was a delightful read.  Since it was my first from the author, I will definitely be reading more of her work.

This was very cute, the romance, the passion the openness of both characters was really refreshing. I don’t have many complaints or issues but I do feel like it ended abruptly. I also felt like the author needed to give us more or less of Key’s parents. Like I get their relationship is their own but my problem is as a father how can you associate with the woman that left y’all son because you wasn’t giving her what she wanted. Then had the nerve to tell Key to take care of her ???? Like how can both of yall be so callous and cold. Like not once did either of them apologize or even say they were wrong. I’m sorry but Ox was a manipulative bastard. The mother while she was trying idk it didn’t give much of anything like no girl that whole I was young I didn’t want to be a mom ain’t cutting it cus lmaoo now Key don’t wanna be a son so leave him alone. I also wasn’t feeling Puma and Mecca, because in one breath we the reader are told they are super close they take care of Emory cus her brother. Yet Gio and that entire label played in her face, with her livelihood and her safety and these “Big bros” aren’t tryna get her out that contract? They ain’t sat down on her behalf? They ain’t even ensure her safety forreal like what exactly does Puma do? Cus it’s no way we get to the end of the book and she still in that contract she don’t have an order of protection like nothing just an abuser in rehab. While I can appreciate the realness of this it just exposed the men in her life who wasn’t really about nothing and didn’t care about her. Idc how someone isolates or how mean they make themselves, yall known her since her youth and loved her brother but letting his baby sister get used abused and mistreated ??? Yeah keep them type of bros from around us.

What a nice and pleasant surprise of a book. The Other Side Of Fame had just the right amount of ingredients to make this a really enjoyable book to read.

I immediately liked the characters and their personalities.

Their chemistry was on 10 from the moment we see them in the same room together and you're instantly like "yea, let's see what's gonna happen here".

There was just the right amount of depth and story outside of Fame and Heavens attraction and relationship that made this feel like a real and authentic story. We had Heaven with her checkered past and tumultuous public relationship and even more public fallout. The result of that leaving her grappling with opening herself up to love and light again. Then we had Fame with his abandonment issues and the sins of his dad's past unexpectedly shaping him into someone he didn't want to be when it came to relationships how he handled the women in his life. And ultimately, having to come to terms with that when he and Heaven came into eachothers lives.

There were all the tertiary characters that all had a role and PLACE in the book to where you got invested in what they had going on as well.

This was really just a nice fun book to read. I found myself smiling at the pages ALOT while reading which doesn't happen often with books written by authors who aren't on my one-click list.

I'll definitely be checking out more of D. Roses work after this.

I really enjoyed this!! I liked Heaven and Fame together. Not too much pookie drama! Annoyed with the unprotected sex but overall I enjoyed the book. Happy with how it ended. This is the third book by D. Rose i’ve read. The first being Chasing Summer which I really liked. This one didn’t have as many grammar mistakes as Chasing Summer but I was getting annoyed with the use of “groused.” Lol.

The following are all the thoughts I had while reading this book so it may contains some spoilers:

You know what I just realized we haven’t heard a peep from Quan! I’m 45% complete. Are we going to get through this book without a pookie? Lettuce pray! 🙏🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾🤣🤣

Look at that! At 46% complete Pookie’s name comes up!

Plan B doesn’t get rid of stds! 🙄

If Deshaun don’t stfu! Let her live her life!

Heaven needs to cuss Deshaun out. That article wasn’t even that bad. Sometimes you outgrow your friends. Even if that friend is your cousin.

Not going to lie I don’t think i’ve ever seen the word “groused” before this book and I don’t ever want to see it again after this book! It’s getting up there with “chortled.” 😖🤮

Saving his card so you never have to purchase a plan b with your own money ever again! How romantic! 😍🫠🤥🙄

Completely random but every time I see Dajah I immediately think of Higher Learning when Malik is calling out for Deja after she got murdered. I’m convinced that’s how it’s pronounced! 🤣🤣🤣

Fame’s an Aquarius! A February at that! Ok he got some bonus points for that! 🤞🏾👌🏾

Keyan aka Fame and Emory aka Heaven were an odd pairing but they worked. The both had a past in the industry that caused a lot of talk and for Heaven it was definitely more on the negative side than Fame. People wanted to count her out for something that she didn't cause and this book showed how unfair and one-sided the industry could be. With all she was going through in trying to make a comeback, she figured being with Fame would help boost her career but not only did it do that but it also allowed her to open her heart again.

Heaven was fighting her head and heart knowing that she didn't want to get in too deep with Fame because he was someone who was labeled as a ladies' man and she didn't want anymore drama. However, the longer she spent time getting to know him, they formed a connection and became friends first. I wished she was honest with herself and him sooner; but I was glad when she finally stopped fighting what she was feeling and allowed herself to be open and loved by him.

I liked the play of the title in the story as well because not only did it show you another side of being famous but we got to see a different side of Fame's character. He was known as being a little closed off and not really caring what people said about him, he didn't want to share about his family history because it was rough for him but with Heaven he was more open and she made him see things differently. He was sensitive and caring and actually showed he was capable of being in a relationship.

This book was definitely a slow burn but the way it was written it kept you engaged, you wanted to see where it was going to go, you wanted Heaven to stop fighting what she was feeling and give Fame a chance, you wanted to see where things were going to go between the two of them and you wanted to see what was going to happen with the movie that was being made within the book as well. Everything fell into place nicely when it was over and I enjoyed it.

This is that fake-relationship romance that hits all the right emotional notes. D. Rose gives us a story that feels grounded in real emotions while still giving us that dreamy “what if” scenario readers love.

The story follows Heaven, a singer trying to make a comeback, and Fame, a rapper dealing with the spotlight and pressure that comes with success. They agree to fake a year-long relationship to help boost their careers—but of course, nothing stays fake for long. What starts as a business deal slowly turns into something real, and watching that shift unfold is honestly one of the best parts of the book.

Heaven is easy to root for—strong, focused, and not here for anyone’s nonsense. And Fame? He’s got layers. He’s confident, yes, but you can feel the weight of what he’s carrying emotionally. Their chemistry is undeniable, but it’s the softer moments between them—the vulnerability, the honesty—that really got me.

One thing I loved is how D. Rose didn’t just give us a romance, but also showed how messy and complicated fame can be. Both characters are trying to hold onto their identities in a world that constantly tries to define them. There’s tension, there’s heat, and there’s growth—for both of them!!

💏🏿Fake Dating

Keyan "Fame" and Emory " Heaven " are both navigating their way through the music industry. Heaven has been away from it for 3 years after publicly dealing with her abusive ex and pregnancy. She's back working on her sophomore album while trying to build her confidence. Fame is a part of the rap duo Fame & Fortune. When Fortune steps away to focus on his family,  that leaves Fame time to focus on his solo brand. Fame is known as a playboy in the industry, but when he pops up in one of Heaven's sessions, let's just say the rest is history. One fun night out with these two leads to a year of "fake dating."

They had me smiling throughout the whole book. Fame was a goner from the beginning. I loved the way he made time for Heaven, showed up, and spoiled the heck out of her. With both their guards up for different reasons, the author does a great job showing the progression of vulnerability and support for each other.

Favorite parts: Their village surrounding them; the couples photoshoot and Q&A 😊😍😩🫶🏿

Get Lost in Heaven and Fame!

I finished this book yesterday, and I’m still thinking about it. It was so well written that I felt like I was a part of the story. The author really took the time to journey through the evolution of Heaven and Fame’s relationship. I feel very strongly that this story should have been a part of the For Keeps series. Puma and Mecca make regular appearances and/or are referenced throughout the story. Reading those first gives foundation to Heaven’s relationship with them and highlights her abusive partner. I would have liked to see more character development with Heaven. She was in a toxic and abusive relationship (see Puma’s story) and this story picks up 3-4 years later. It speeds by her depression and therapy and she never shared those experiences and her trauma with Fame. I feel some type of way about that! lol Definitely a good read…I might read it again today!!!

This is up there with my favourites.

First of all it's fake dating who doesn't love fake dating trope?! (We do need to look into why we all love fake dating so much because if you think about it it's basically a situationship that has a HEA... Are we all toxic?! Anywayyy)

The foundation they built as friends was so beautiful and refreshing and the fact that Keyan fell first and clearly fell hard pretty early on despite the poor examples his parents had given him. I really related to both characters on the things they were battling with and I'm a sucker for an imperfect character getting grace and essentially finding their person and love.

This is my first look into D. Rose's catalogue but baby I'll be going back and reading her back catalogue now!! If the rest of her writing is like this I may have found a fav!!

Fake Dating Gone Real

3.5⭐️ Fake dating is all fun and games… until the real feelings sneak in! Emory was desperate for a fresh start after a traumatic chain of events, and Fame was just the person to help her revamp her image. Their friendship and growing bond were enjoyable to watch unfold, and I loved the sparks between them. However, I found myself wanting a bit more from Emory. While Fame, despite his spotty reputation, was honest and upfront about his feelings (once they surfaced), Emory kept things surface level. Her handling of certain situations felt immature at times, and I was hoping to see more growth from her character. Overall, the fake-dating setup was fun, the chemistry was undeniable, and Fame definitely carried the emotional weight of the story. I just wish Emory had met him halfway with the same depth and maturity.
