Kennedy
Growing up with my parents was hard, Watching the man you love with others was heart-wrenching. My best friend’s brother was all I wanted. I didn’t believe he felt the same. Until he did. I didn’t believe I was good enough. Until I was. I put everything on the line for him, including my freedom. I gave him my heart and my body; I gave him everything. But he lied to me; he broke me, For her. He gave her what he promised me, And I had to move on with my life, To start fresh, But I couldn’t cope with my new normal; I felt lost. And then my family needed me. I decided to return home, and he chose to fight. He fought for me, for us, But how can I put all pain behind us when she’s still his? How can I forgive him when the hurt is dug deep?
This can be read as a standalone but is better if books are read in order to get an understanding of other characters. This is book 5 of 7 of The Devil’s MC series, with a HEA. Due to mature content and themes this book is recommended for readers aged 18+, this novel may contain triggers.
I got sucked into this series with the first book and there’re several loose ends went couples that need to be settled, so I jumped on this book when I saw Doc’s was out there. Things went CRAZY for these guys in Breaker’s book, and I was dying to see how it shook out and hoping for Prue to bring some crazy OW drama. Welp, to say I was disappointed would be an understatement.
First, just to note, despite each book having one couple, these could be hard to read as standalones because the storylines are all over the other books. For instance, Shadow and Kennedy have been around for a couple books and most of their problems were introduced in Breaker’s book. Kennedy hasn’t been around as much as Doc, but he’s been around FREQUENTLY, and you’d miss most of his family connections and backstory if you jumped in here. So, FYI… **this review could have spoilers of previous books.**
With that said, one of my biggest complaints was I thought the book was very slow moving. Mostly because the first half felt like a repeat and the second half felt frozen because of Kennedy.
Now to be fair, it was technically new stuff. It was that it was just a more detailed account of what we already knew, and I didn’t feel like it really added to the problem at hand. Where we left off at the end of Breaker. We knew there was an age difference that kept them from getting together. We knew that they both loved each other but didn’t know it. We knew there was an incident that he “saved” her from. We knew there was a period after where they both circled each other dating others both wanting each other until the deflowering situation followed by him announcing Prue was his old lady and pregnant. We knew all the crap that happened with Quinn. We even knew there was a reason Doc was doing what Prue told him to.
So yes, we got details, and a couple were new things, but I had the gist and didn’t need so much repeated and filled in. I was ready to move on and slogging down memory lane for almost ½ the book got old.
Bottom Line- Maybe my expectations were too high, but I found this all kind of dull. The second half was a bit better, but still slow going. There’re some editing, plausibility, and consistency issues. The timeline jumps around A LOT giving everything a surfacy feel. And the main conflict was SO FARFETCHED that someone’s going to sit around for 8 YEARS to play her trump card then it was prolonged for multiple chapters by avoiding one conversation.
Well, that wasn't as good as I was expecting. The author was really hyping the angst with this couple in the last couple of books, but alas a bit of a let down. And I'm thinking the club whores are way smarter than the MCs. 🤷 They're getting outsmarted by them. Also, a lot of repeat from the last couple of books that had me skipping. Other couples are mentioned for future books with ex's coming back on the scene and causing chaos... But of course. I have to give this author credit where it's deserved. She has a way of making me dislike the FMC by the end of the book while redeeming the MMC. I hope Lola get's some kind of future book. She's a club princess that's caused all kinds of trouble for everyone. We'll see I guess.
I'm going to read this book and leave an honest review since it's on KU; I've read 3 of the others and while I basically enjoy this author's writing, it's not always the best. This book has only 4 & 5 star glowing reviews, and that's a warning sign for me - ALWAYS SUSPICIOUS WHEN IT APPEARS REVIEWS HAVE BEEN SCRUBBED.
So this is why I try not to read scrubbed reviews. You're not fooling anyone when you eliminate 1 & 2* reviews; this book was even worse than the rest. I've been generous w/3* ratings, but I just can't. .
And this MC has guys in their late 20s & early 30s crying non-stop over their women leaving, and yet continue to do not just STUPID, but BEYOND BELIEF things to fuck up again & again. Then they have to crawl & grovel for months!! It's idiotic. Oh, and let me mention that these tough MC bikers (who whack people w/axes and burn others to death), are afraid of their mothers, who apparently have more say in the club and their lives than anyone else. The FL also took so much crap from her drug addled, pig of a mother, giving her money & letting herself be abused, yet didn't move out til she was 25 - WTH was she waiting for?
I really hope this author does better in a different series, because she has some good writing chops, but she takes the ridiculousness too far - and though the grammatical errors have improved, they're still there. And girl, again, if you're writing about MCs in the US (and you are!) then write in American vernacular!!! (we don't use words like "fancy" in place of "want") *sigh* By the end of the book, they were both so weepy that I couldn't stand either one of them.
It feels like this series is blending together, and I can't tell the books apart. Also it's laughable that Doc, who is a doctor with no "do no harm" ethics, couldn't just find out if Prue was pregnant or not. All these men look stupid one way or another in every book. It's getting boring.
A new to me go-to author for angst! This author's heroes *always* betray the heroines and have to grovel to get back in good graces. Occasionally, horrific things happen to the h's.
Everything it OTT, but the writing is good.
But. Doc has been great in previous books, and I don't think he deserved this wishy-washy wimpy heroine. And Doc wasn't very alpha in going for what he wanted in the beginning of the book, which didn't seem true to his character from before. Mostly, this story just had me clenching my teeth and muttering ffs one of you make a flipping move already .
I'll still read the rest because sometimes I'm a total angst-junky.
I never want to shake some sense into 2 characters as much as I wanted to on Doc and Kennedy!! They drove me crazy but I had a huge smile when they finally got their HAE!!! I love how the other characters make me want more books to get their stories.
I tried to get through this book but I just can’t, the plot and characters are just so unbelievable that I can’t finish reading it. I skimmed at most the last 50% of the book.
Doc (Lucas) is part of a MC but also studying to be a doctor. Kennedy (Pixie) is friends with Doc’s sister and related to the MC by blood but that’s a secret because of her evil mother. She’s going to be a nurse.
Doc is 5 years older than Kennedy (but the author makes him 6 years in her timeline a lot, it’s annoying) and despite that both have secret crushes on each other. He feels gross his feelings while she’s still a teenager but the author still gives us scenes of him having sex with other women while picturing Kennedy. He thinks Kennedy does not like him and she thinks he does not like her “like that.”
One of those books where ONE single conversation would change the whole book.
When Kennedy is 17 her druggie whore of a mother tries to sell her virginity for $50. She gets assaulted and roughed up but not raped. She runs away and Doc comes across her, finds out what happened and finds the guy and kills him. Somehow NO one sees despite him dragging the guy out of a full house even if it is druggies and whores. Kennedy follows him, feels guilty and then buries the guy in the woods after Doc leaves him out in the open.
Yet, she stays with these same abusive parents and it never happens again despite her mother having orgies every night? Ookkk.
The timeline also jumps A LOT. They’re 17/23, then months later, then 20/25 (We get another scene of Doc sleeping with women in med school- basically he’s a walking man whore), then 24/29 then Doc is almost 30. Somehow, they both still secretly “love” each other, even have secret tattoos of each other’s names but aren’t together. Why? Who knows really. Because she's friends with his sister? Makes no sense.
In fact, Doc is banging a stripper who is now his girlfriend, and coworkers and has women “obsessed over him” and following him around. I don’t think I rolled my eyes any harder.
Kennedy still lives with her gang banging, abusing, thieving druggie parents especially her mother who takes all her money and pulls her hair, hits her and LOCKS HER IN A CLOSET AT TWENTY-FIVE! C'mon.... give me a break.
Then K/D sleep together technically cheating on his stripper girlfriend, he takes K's virginity (at 25?), then gets blackmailed by his OW girlfriend who also says she's pregnant (he's a doctor and can't figure out she's not?) and SOMEHOW has a video of Kennedy burying that same rapist guy from EIGHT years ago (c'mon!!!!) and makes her his old lady, NEVER EXPLAINS to Kennedy just ghosts her and breaks Kennedy's heart who runs away and has a secret pregnancy that she miscarries (it's brutal) while Doc tries to commit suicide by crashing his bike multiple times, Kennedy tries to commit suicide over the miscarriage, OW tries to stab D with a knife, he unalives the OW and they both must grovel.
I had a number of issues with it, Anne I'm not entirely sure where to start...
Maybe with the fact that her mother abused her, possibly as young as infancy, yet she stayed? Long past the age she could have moved out, she not only didn't, she continued to support her parents!
Also, no one noticed?!? It's stated that she was locked into a closet, sometimes for days at a time. Her best friend never realized? At one point, cigarette burns are mentioned, but Doc didn't see them? Of course, he also apparently managed to miss a tattoo on her upper arm, despite the number of times they got busy on their first night. Her parents should have been offed years ago to begin with, but definitely as soon as it was believed mom had the drive.
Or maybe how they spent 8 years longing for each other, not realizing the other one cared? And not one of the other people around, including her cousin, thought to tell her, hey, he does want you. Or tell him, maybe stop dating all those women, you're hurting her.
Or how she's so upset that Doc made her the other woman, yet had no issues with her best friend who not only sleeps with married men, but is the reason her cousin's little boy ends up in the hospital!
Or how they let Prue walk out after everything she did, giving her the opportunity to come back and hurt them?
There's also the mess of all the other bits outdid other people's stories tossed in.
I actually read the next book in this series, Tech, a couple of weeks ago. Not quite my style, but an enjoyable read. This, however, is an unmitigated mess. Honestly, when I started to realize I recognized characters from Tech, I wondered if someone had ripped off someone else, as the writing style felt like a completely different person!
DNF 40% bothered me how this CW told him to jump and he said how high just because she “may” have had a backup video (ready to send if she disappeared) of the girl he loves (Kennedy) burying her dead almost rapist. Instead of torturing this CW and having Tech on it to find said backup, he makes her his old lady and doesn’t tell anyone so Kennedy obviously runs away. THEN he tells tech to find this video and tech essentially says it doesn’t exist unless it’s on a USB… which honestly this bitch didn’t know 2+2 so to say she had a USB of said video and a person ready to squeal if she disappeared just didn’t check out with me. I’m usually okay with miscommunication trope but not this one. This one felt like weak hero’s and even heroines.
I mean after the third time Kennedy got slapped by her mom even though she’s a grown 25 year old woman who is a NURSE so a very good income I was done. The concept was hard for me to understand. Why get abused as an adult? You have your own steady income, no other siblings tying you to those parents, and they literally don’t do anything for you. Why pay for your abusive parent’s bills? Why continue to go back to your abusive parents home when you have an aunt and cousin that would be your supportive and loving family? I’m just so confused… it was almost like it was written to feel bad for the heroine yet I didn’t feel bad. I just felt annoyed. Grow up and file a restraining order like a normal person.
Could just be me though with these frustrating thoughts. Normally I love this authors books! This one missed the mark for me.

There was angst/betrayal/grovel and OW drama. Grey area for cheating...
Cheating = H had been on a few dates with OW when he and h hooked up. To the h, she was made to feel like the OW especially when after their encounter, the H claims the OW as his old lady and proclaims they are getting married. h had been a V.
OW drama = OW blackmailed the H into claiming her, so in reality the H did not cheat with the h. OW claimed she was pregnant which was later proven to be a lie. OW went after the H with a knife. Comeuppance? She became a living torch thanks to the H. Totally justified for all the nasty things she did.
Grovel = H must grovel for making the h believe he used her only to claim/marry/get OW pregnant. H went into a spiral when h goes away for work and several times wrecks his bike intentionally (suicidal for sure). H writes over 300 letters to the h pouring out his feelings and thoughts. H gives the letters to h when she leaves again. h also has some groveling to do...she was pregnant but lost the baby at 20 weeks. She delivered her baby, held the baby briefly then had the baby cremated (tragic and sad, so trigger warning). h eventually told the H and it further devastates him. They both caused trauma to the other which is ironic because they both thought their actions were protecting the other.
MC = H is in a club but it's really background noise and not a major part of the story.

Review I have been reading this series in order and have been looking forward to Doc's story. The author did not let me down. There is an incident that happens that sets the couple back. I really felt for Kennedy, and I really wanted to hate Doc. But in the end, there is a HEA. The author did a great job of keeping the suspense going and really making you want to dislike Doc.
MC Book Author Recommendations: Eve Black Candice Wright Samantha Cole Penny Dee Sandy Alvarez & Crystal Daniels Audrey Bell
Started out fun, but honestly could (and should) have been about 30% shorter. By the end of the book, both MCs are so mired in their own angst and hurt and betrayals and the way they hurt and betrayed the other, and the way they felt when hurting and betraying and felt when being hurt and betrayed (ad nauseum) that I was so over it. I don't need looooooong paragraphs about how he hurt the heroine by doing A, then she hurt him by doing B, then he hurt her by doing C, then she hurt him by doing D, E, and F, until at the end, they're both so emotionally gutted by each other that they can't do anything more than sit in a room and randomly insist they love each other, but are too angry to do anything but give each other space.
Also, the misandry of my romance novel consumption is I want the dude to be in the wrong and grovel while the woman's transgressions remain minimal. Always. It's my fantasy, you don't get to judge me.
The end of this book just felt So - Damn - Long!
Unfortunately, there were too many needless miscommunications and misunderstandings to make the emotional gore fun. I was just ready to be done with it by the end.
I loved this book and couldn't get enough of it. The main leads both broke my heart and put it back together. It's a story about the love that two people have for each other, that wins above everything.
FMC is Kennedy ("Ken" or "Pixie") a girl who had a tuff upbringing who falls in love with a MC brother at the age of 12 yrs. MMC is Doc (Lucas) who is about 5 yrs older then Kennedy and was also fell in love with Kennedy when she was 16 yrs old. They went through years of friendship without knowing they loved each other. Both trying to move on with life and fight the love because they each thought the other didn't feel that way. Then after finally realizing and acting out on that love, both their lives come crashing down due to the obstacles they forced to deal with. The pain that they both go through is heart splitting. The author takes you on a ride through their journey to reach their HEA. The ending had me in happy tears.
I read this book as a standalone, and was able to follow along without any issues. Though now I will be going back to book 1, because I loved the side characters and can't wait to read their stories.
Doc has wanted Kennedy, who is his sisters best friend for years, but he always thought she was uninterested. Once he realizes she has feelings for him he acts on it and claims her as his own. Kennedy is going to be his old lady and he is looking forward to the future they will build together. Problem is Doc wasn't exactly celibate when he was carrying a torch for Kennedy from afar and when a club girl tells him she is pregnant, he makes a move claiming her as his ol' lady without explaining to Kennedy. Kennedy decides it is time to get out of dodge and get a fresh start. Problems swirl, lies are told and secrets are kept. Can Doc and Kennedy, who are each others hearts find a way back to one another.
I was anxious for this story, but Doc was an idiot. For being so smart he really was not using his smarts at all. I liked Kennedy a lot, thought she was a strong heroine who has to put herself first. There was a ton of stuff going on in this book, was pulled in and did not put it down until I was finished. Great story.
I hate Kennedy. She finds out Prue was never actually pregnant, Doc was never with Prue after their 4 dates and only slept with her once, and he made Pruehis old lady to protect Kennedy. She ran without letting him explain, but she’s mad he decided to protect her without talking to her first. Are you f’ing KIDDING ME?! Never mind she selfishly kept her actual pregnancy and miscarriage from him. He gives her the letters from her time in NYC, she reads them, but goes no contact with him while speaking to everyone else in the club. She also decides to come home but doesn’t want Doc to know when cuz she wants MORE space cuz she’s too chicken shit to tell him about their baby. Then she’s upset cuz he finally gave up and left and might not be coming back?! And when she gets a text that he’s finally back, she wants to force him to talk to her. He gave you space but you can’t give him space?! I can’t f’ing stand her. This girl needs to end up miserable and alone.
What an epic romantic story. This couple had to endure loss and longing that lasted for a good while. There was so much pain between the couple because of the loss that they both endured both physically and mentally. The loss was bigger than their Love and at one point they thought they could not come back from that but thanks to the club members and the brotherhood, their obstacles and challenges was something that they help them overcome. Dog and Kennedy had to face so much heartbreak because of their past and the longing that they had for each other, but as they were overcoming it, they learn to depend on one another for support and they knew in their hearts that love and patience was going to conquer it all. Couldn’t get enough of this book and highly recommended. It will have you crying with every passage. Can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
The story was okay but I found it a little repetitive and started to lose interest. Both Doc and Kennedy were to blame for their on going trauma… if she would have known she’d have understood and he should have told her lessening heart ache all round. I didn’t like the fact he put the blame on Kennedy especially where the daughter was concerned. Where was his empathy for her and all she’d had to cope with. It really made me not like Doc as it was all about him and how she treated him when in fact he was the one that started all the deceit. I felt that at times I was re reading previous books in the same series as there are a quite a lot of repeated stories/events from previous books due to the time lines over lapping. However I am invested in the characters enough to continue reading the series.
So. This is not a standalone. This is the first book I read in this series. Idk why it’s the first to appear on my recommended but here we are.
There are so many other characters that it was so confusing trying to get everybody straight.
And honestly it feels like it was just a stepping stone into the stories of the other members.
I feel like the OW drama could have just been avoided if there were ZERO secrets. Even when the damage had been done, dude could’ve talked about it with his brothers and they’d have helped him. It was truly a poop show.
I didn’t need the visual of what happened to the other woman though. Ugh i need to gouge out my mental eyes.
Verdict: this was an okay read. Heavy on the drama caused by lack of communication. Kinda preachy in some parts. Confusing with the huge number of characters. Okay ending.
These people are so stupid that I can't breathe! I don't know why they kept all those stupid secrets. The doc is dumb enough to think that Ken doesn't love him when everyone else does. And Ken is stupid enough to think that doc doesn't love her. Doc is so dumb that he fucks and dates prue knowing she is a patch chaser. He lets her blackmail him into making her his Old lady after taking Ken's virginity and hurts her ... I can't breathe. They both love each other so much that along with them even I can't breathe... they gave me asthma with all the not breathing!
And all these smart mc guys are so dumb that they can't find the evidence which Prue is blackmailing doc with for more than a year. And it takes Ken a few minutes to think who else might be in this with Prue. Even after telling Tech who she suspects they don't do anything for months ... they just Take my breath away!!
Well written MC story with different complications for the characters. The characters are well developed particularly the female lead who is awesome.
I did get really annoyed when Doc turns the whole thing around and makes it about himself. Kennedy caused all his pain and it was like the whole fiasco was her fault and he made sure she felt it. Then throughout the last third of the book the strong female lead falls for his guilt trip after he gives her his letters. That's bull. She didn't know why he was doing what he did for a year. It was real to her but he blames her.
Yeah not my favorite character. Although the although did a great job writing a obsessive prick, poor me, male lead. He started out as a good guy bit when the poor me went into over drive and he got angry at Kennedy never swing her side of things I lost respect for this character.
