'Hunters Don't Cry'

Throughout my life, I’ve heard this hard-bitten expression. It was like a taunt, as if implying that hunters didn’t have the heart to feel such extreme emotions or reasons sufficient enough to shed tears. But for me, this lingered like a heavy fog, suffocating me with despair… Outwardly, I maintained a façade of composure, but inwardly, the pain of suppressing my tears overwhelmed me. It was a constant reminder that my true feelings were deemed inconsequential, unworthy of others' acknowledgment…
_____________

In the shadowed world of hunters, duties and responsibilities overshadow their personal freedom. One such shackle restrains their freedom to love. This supernatural race, which exists to protect humanity from abominations, forbids homosexuality and the pursuit of true desires.

Despite being a hunter, Collen can't deny the depth of his feelings for his partner, Logan. However, as Logan's skills eclipse his own, Collen struggles with a constant sense of unworthiness. Unbeknownst to him, behind closed doors, his beloved grapples with demons of his own, in solitude. Is it possible for him to achieve the life he desires with Logan when the entire world seems against it? Or perhaps the only practical option is to give in and move on with someone who can reciprocate his feelings?

You've come here to know more about the author whose books you’ve read. As you await the curtain to be removed, questions flood your mind - “Who is the Author? What do they look like? What kinds of books do they write?”

At last, the curtain is pulled aside; there in front of you is the phoenix, a fiery bird with a sharp beak and red beady eyes, perched on a table with a quill in its beak, and staring back at you. With its talons on a desk, it wonders to itself what brings you here, and how this moment will unfold.

The Phoenix looks at you, trying to decipher the mystery of your presence. With its red beady eyes, it asks why you are here when you refuse to respond. Instead, you stare back in silence, waiting for the phoenix to unravel the mystery.

After some moments, the phoenix sighs and turns back, its sharp beak turning the quill to add more to the story it has been working on, its brilliant fiery red feathers ruffled as it continues to write. Many of your questions remain unanswered but you do know that the author's name is Eli Blake. Though you can't yet tell whether that makes Eli male or female, you're confident that the author will be fun to cuddle with and ruffle its feathers.

Thank you so much to Eli Blake for the opportunity to read an ARC copy of this book!

Ahhhh, this story. So tragic, so devastating- but such a beautiful journey, at the same time.

Collen and Logan are supernatural "hunters-" they protect the human world from "abominations-" (vampires, werewolves, etc). This gave me some "Hunger Games" vibes at times, and I was also reminded a little of parts of the "Bonds That Tie" series. We have the world of the hunters co-existing along with the human world, and it is a competitive world. There are goals, public rankings, challenges, and a hierarchy is designed to weed out the weaker hunters. The higher-levels in charge of the hunters are downright petrifying- they use violence, abuse and manipulation to coerce their hunters into progressing.

We read about this world from Collen's POV. Collen is a hunter who is paired up with Logan, the secret love of his life. In a world where homosexuality is taboo and shunned among the supernatural, he is forced to hide his feelings from not only Logan, but from the entire society in which he lives. It is SUCH a sad existence. Collen is so in love with Logan that every move he makes is affected by Logan's presence.

Until a certain point, the two had existed as friends and hunting partners. But when they come under public scrutiny due to Collen holding Logan back from advancing, talk begins of forcing Logan to find a new partner. Logan is adamant he will never leave Collen behind, despite what everyone says- and begins working to train him privately so he will improve.

And hot damn, wouldn't you know- lots of private time together leads to the realization that Collen isn't the only one hiding his feelings.

God, this book was hot. I am SO happy I chose the extended/spicy version- it was the right choice, because even though I felt the book got long in the middle and the pacing dragged some, it was worth it for all of the spice. These two were ON FIRE, and the forbidden push/pull of the two of them together made everything that much hotter.

Emotionally, they broke my heart, so I really needed all the spice to counteract the heavy hitting nature of their story. Collen is ready to chuck it all and defect from the life they lead, become outcasts- in order to be together. But Logan has been raised with big demons looming over his shoulder, and due to the trauma he has been exposed to, would never allow himself to see that as a viable option, no matter how in love he is with Collen.

The human world, which is humming happily along beside them- next to them in the bar they always attend, living next door to them in their neighborhood, etc- is pretty much adjacent to the world we live in today, where men live together all the time in romantic relationships. So to have to watch this, to have to see others living the way they want to live- it rips Collen up from the inside out. Not to mention the fact that Logan's ingrained inability to ever accept them on a public scale means that Collen gets mixed messages and his heart broken over and over by him, even if they do love each other.

The last portion of this book was one of the saddest things I have ever read. We really have a "I will sacrifice myself to save you" vibe happening here, a very tragic, Romeo and Juliet style story unfolding. Years go by, and you the reader will suffer immensely along with Collen. Be ready to have this book rip your heart out!

But don't all the good ones make you feel? I love angsty, heartbreaking stories and this one absolutely fell right into that category. This is one to sink into if you are looking for a world and a romance to immerse yourself in!

Thank you again for the ARC opportunity!

Before you even look at the page count and let the thickness deter you away, give this book a chance.
I devoured Hunters Don't Cry in one day and have zero regrets. Ensnared from the very beginning, I didn't put this book down for any other reason than I had to work and feed myself.

Characters: The characters and their heartbreaking story are the main reason why I loved this book so much. Truly. The MCs and even the side characters propelled this story forward in a way that I felt as if I blinked and every page had been obliterated.
Being queer, I found myself relating to Collen's journey the entire time. All he wanted was to be loved by the one person who captivated him from the very beginning and consumed his heart. He wasn't deterred by the consequences of his actions or his feelings, he simply wanted to be chosen.
Logan stole my attention for a whole different reason. His constant mental battle with emotions and feelings stemmed from unrelenting pressures threatening to destroy him. He allowed fear to drive quite a few of his actions and decisions. However, even with a long journey of progression ahead, I will go as far as to say he went through the most change as the story unfolded. It might not have been my preferred outcome, but I know there is something big waiting around the corner. I look forward to what awaits him in the sequel.

Spice: *gasp* Yes, this is an MM Romance story with spicy, and a fair amount considering this is the extended steamy edition. I don't prefer to rate spice in books, however, I will say that the spice in this version is strategically placed and very descriptive. The scenes are enjoyable to read and not overly done.

Worldbuilding/backstory: Unfortunately this is where my rating started to dip. The author provides a great deal of context clues to figure out a portion of the world, but I also felt as if I was supposed to read a prequel before diving into this chunky story. Throughout my reading, I kept referring back to notes that I had taken of details I knew would be important later on. I asked myself, "Why" a few times when attempting to wrap my head around things.
This didn't create any type of negative opinion about the story, just a part of the book that lacked a bit. The main plotline stole my attention and focus enough that I still loved my experience with Hunters Don't Cry.

Overall, I was captivated by this story and do recommend it to those looking for an MM romance filled with heartbreak, strong emotions, a bit of violence, and a supernatural spin. I will be reading more from this author in the future.

Highlights/Tropes To Expect:
Single 1st POV
Protect each other at any cost
MM Romance with spice
Supernatural hunters
Angst
Homophobic society
Closet Sexuality
Mild Violence

Wow. This book. Please don’t let the page count scare you away because it is so worth it. I absolutely loved this book and devoured every word of it! The relationship between Collen and Logan was incredible to read. Heartbreaking at times and I definitely had tears flowing, especially the last 30%. But there were so many moments where I also felt butterflies and jealousy and anger and love like I was feeling the same emotions that Collen was. I struggled with Logan for a bit, but finding out why he is the way he is really helped me to understand and love him as much as Collen. Also, the spice fantastic. Not overly vulgar and you could really feel the love and care they have for each other. I 100% recommend this book. It does end on a cliffhanger and I don’t think I’ve ever been more impatient for a sequel.

When you are queer and read a book with queer characters, there are typically two good ways that those characters are presented. First way, the relationship is accepted and isn’t even questioned because it is widely accepted. It’s the way we all wish the world worked.

The second way is the way that tears at your heart and is an emotional journey from start to finish filled with internal and external homophobia, the way many queer people have lived for a good chunk of their lives. This book is the second way and it portrays it spectacularly. The relationship between Collen and Logan claws at your insides, ripping at your heart. As I read, I could feel the hurt and pain that these two characters dealt with as they battle with inside and outside influences to be who they are.

There were times I wanted to wrap Collen in my arms and just hold him. His hurt tore at me. But I also felt for Logan, because I understood Logan. It is so hard to live up to all the expectations placed on you when you just want to be who you are.

I really felt pulled into this world and into the lives of these characters. The story is long and the extended version is even longer, but I was so engaged that it didn’t feel long.

The spice, especially in this extended version, was so great. Not only was it spicy but the descriptions were in depth and weren’t rushed like they often are in romance books. You could picture every minute.

The only thing that I wanted more of was that I wanted to understand this tangential supernatural world that operated alongside the human world from the beginning. That is the only reason for the tiny deduction to 4.75. But this was absolutely worth the read and how MM romances should be.

I feel so honoured and happy that I got to be a Beta reader for this story ❤️
I have so been looking forward to reading Logan and Collen story because after the events of My Mate's Second Chance, to me Collen is the love of Logan's life.

And I know this can't really be considered a traditional romance because *reasons* 😅 but it doesn't matter, they are like Romeo and Juliet to me in the sense that they are soulmates no matter what, their love is bigger than anything that happens to them.

This book is all in Collen's POV and my heart broke for him during the whole book.
I'm so in love with Collen and I could feel all his emotions. However I shouldn't forget that Logan, although I can't agree with his choices, is also a victim.

I really loved the ending 🥹 and some parts of it were really unexpected to me.

The author reached out to me to review this book. I’d chosen the extra spice version. Please check content warnings before reading.

This book was good! I was a little surprised how much I enjoyed this book. The twists and the level of angst had me on the edge of my seat. The world-building was written so well. Some parts of the book I felt were drawn out. This is a lengthyyyyy book.

The spice in this book? 🫠🥵 I gasped at times, lol.

The more emotional and heavy parts of this book had my heart clenching. The book in told from only one character’s pov and that’s Collen. Hiding a part of yourself in a society where loving the same sex is forbidden and “taboo” had me wanting to hug Collen. Logan just ugh! I wanted to kick his As—and hug him at them same time.

Now, the writing style at times was hard for me. “The male said” “I stared at the male” “the female” just the usage of the word male and female was becoming too much. However, I am glad I stuck it out until the end.

“𝐀𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐞’𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐲!”, 𝐈 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬. 𝐈 𝐜𝐮𝐩 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲, 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐞𝐲𝐞𝐬, “𝐖𝐞’𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐋𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐧… 𝐈’𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭… 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭..? 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐞? 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐮𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬?”

This book was angsty as hell. Heartbreaking. My heart hurt so bad at the 90% mark. And the ending was surprisingly sad, and also confusing. 🤔

I wasn’t told that this book didn’t have a HEA seeing as it’s not completed. I have to be in a specific mindset to read a book without a happy ending, or that’s not completed. That’s one reason this book wasn’t rated high. The usage of male/female is another reason this book wasn’t rated high.

Again, this was a good book. I do recommend it.

I almost didn't read this because the use of "male" or "female" (although there were hardly any female characters in this and the two who came up in more than two chapters both turned out to be horrible people) instead of man or woman is one of the worst fantasy conventions that came up within the last ten years or so. Nevertheless, I persisted. And I'm not sure whether that was a good choice.
The world building is kinda wacky, and a lot of stuff did not make sense to me. I am still trying to figure out if this at one point was fanfiction for a fandom I don't know. I won't go into detail, but the last 20% of the book are just... strange. At some part there comes some background stuff up that is out of absolutely nowhere and has no impact on the story and also does not explain any of Collen's behaviour, so why put it in there at all? The writing style itself is questionable at times, and especially Collen's inner monologue (which unnecessarily was in italics which bothered me more than it probably should) sounded just very strange and unnatural. Sometimes, people in this novel just forget how to people.
That being said, I surprisingly really grew to care about Collen and Logan. Do they have a good and healthy relationship? No. But despite none of the setting really making sense, their relationship felt realistic within this really homophobic society. Or maybe just this really homophobic organisation? I'm not sure how it works. The book touches a lot of heavy themes and manages to deal with them accordingly without making light of any of the problems or offering idealistic solutions.
So if you are searching for some sort of fantasy adventure, you should search somewhere else. But if you are here for queer angst and a lingering feeling of doom and despair, then you made it to the right place.

Pros:
*The cadence worked for story progression
*It was entertaining
*Character development for Logan
*Collen’s angst and how society conveyed real emotions
*Supporting characters and society emotions were top notch. I only wish we knew what they looked like in detail,
*Change of writing style was an interesting transition in the final chapters.
*It was and wasn’t a complete HEA/ cliffhanger. But it was acceptable

Cons:
*Lack of world building (hunters have faster healing, they can’t be in same sex relationships, they protect humans, and they’re held to certain standards by HQ, and they don’t cry?) what are they? If not fast healing humans? Besides knowing if they’re male or female, we only know what hair color and eyes they have…that level of detail may work with an explanation that reads how impersonal Collen feels to his surroundings and interactions but that was never really explained either. Lazy choice.

*No character development for Collen besides obsession increases. He pushes and demands from Logan at every turn, it’s awful that it is never addressed but that it was more realistic to human behavior which I can and can’t fully appreciate. I understand it, but it didn’t make me root for Collen, it made me stare at the book screaming “you’re over stepping again!” “Let Logan breathe!”

*Quick wrap up towards the ending was too damn quick considering the page count on this book.

Overall, I don’t regret the read. It has redeeming qualities. But I think there were missed opportunities for Blake to have covered it.

Dark, twisted and unsettling, this is an urban fantasy world with a slightly dystopian feel. What drew me in was the world-building, the unexpected twists and the high level of angst - a homophobic and grandeur-prone, elitist world of Hunters, who live besides the human population but have their own rules and moral codex/ if it can be called moral at all/ against the paranormals - vampires, werewolves and other creatures, painted like the worst Plague ever existed. The story was told from one of the main characters POVs - Collen, even though we see a glimpse of Logan /his partner/ too. Collen was raised, groomed and conditioned to think in a certain way. And this way was definitely not how Hunters were taught to act and believe. Even falling in love with your partner is something forbidden if you're a same-s€x couple. Logan and Collen were a dysfunctional partnership at least for me, uneven as capabilities and skill set. They were a world apart even in the way the were seeing the future in front of them and what they wanted to achieve.
As a whole it was interesting to read but I love my characters with a little more spunk and backbone. Neither Collen or Logan were what usually captivates me.
The story was intriguing, I just couldn't connect with the writing style to enjoy it fully.

Wow, this book! This is my first Eli Blake read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Don’t let the page count scare you—it’s absolutely worth it. I devoured every word! The story is a mix of action, drama, and a heartfelt love story between two hunting partners who struggle with their homophobic world and inner demons. Their journey is filled with ups and downs, misunderstandings, and plenty of action with supernatural creatures.

The relationship between Collen and Logan was intense and emotional. There were heartbreaking moments that brought me to tears, especially toward the end, but also so many moments filled with butterflies, jealousy, anger, and love. Logan was a struggle at first, but once his backstory unfolded, I understood him better and loved him just as much as Collen did. The romance was steamy without being overly vulgar, and their love and care for each other were palpable.

Highlights/Tropes:

- Single 1st POV
- MM Romance with spice
- Protect each other at any cost
- Supernatural hunters
- Closet sexuality
- Angst and mild violence
- Homophobic society

If you enjoy friends-to-lovers, drama, and a touch of the supernatural, this book is a must-read! The book ends on a cliffhanger, and I’m impatient for the sequel!

This was an enjoyable and heartbreaking love story of two hunting partners whose job is to hunt supernatural creatures. Their journey isn't easy - not only do they have to struggle with their homophobic surroundings but also fight their inner demons. They go through plenty of ups and downs, arguments and misunderstandings, before Logan is ready to face his secret desires. Collen, in his turn, has to grapple with his feelings of never being quite up to the level of his perfect hunting partner, and the heartbreak of his (at first) unrequited love.
Their hunting of vampires and werewolves provides a nice addition of action to the plot. The book also contains plenty of hot scenes. So if a friends-to-lovers romance, drama and action with a touch of supernatural is your cup of tea, this book is totally recommended!

I met Collen and Logan in My Mates Second Chance, and i was so excited to read their story from the beginning. I do advise you to read Hunters Dont Cry first.

Hunters Don't Cry is a rollercoaster of emotions full of love, longing, duty, and heartbreak. You'll find it hard to put this book down with its gripping storyline of two hunters navigating through their feelings for each other that is considered taboo and highly forbidden in a Hunters world.

My heart breaks for the cards that these two have been dealt. They deserve happiness

Please read triggers before reading.

“I want you to kiss me… Is it too much to ask for..?”

Can I hug Collen and never let him go? 🥺

I felt my heart tearing for this man and I just wanted to jump in, grab Logan, and shove him into Collen's arms. Neither of them deserved so much pain. I hated Logan's father and those hunters in the headquarters who ruined Collen and Logan's lives!

I don't care that they have duty to fulfill or purpose to serve, Logan and Collen belong together! I want them spending their lives cuddled up in the cottage!

Wow. This book tore at my heart strings. I wanted to wrap Collin up in a never ending hug and then later in the book I wanted to do the same to Logan. I am a sucker for sad broken boys and these two are the definition of sad and broken. This book had me crying at all the angst and the internal pain each MC went through. I throughly enjoyed Logan and Collin’s journey but there is a definite twist I did not see coming at all. Definitely loved this book and would recommend!!

My first Eli Blake book and it was so good. The characters and world building was great. Collen is a hunter along with his friend and hunting partner, Logan. He is also in love with him but I'm their world, that is a no go. They also have to deal with their difference in abilities and if they should remain partners. What will happen to them?

I honestly don’t know what to do with this book.
The story was interesting, the base was good until it wasn’t.
The internalized homophobia and all the rejects from the MCs just kept slapping me out of the story.
I was not shipping them :(, I wish I could have …. But I didn’t.
The end, though, very nice regarding all they have been through! Karma came in a good and a bad way.

Other than that the book is way too long, maybe I should I gone with the short version, not the extended. A lot of chapters started with erotic dream, written the same as the rest, it confused me A LOT !
Adding the robotic way of talking from one of the MCs, because that’s his personality… was a total killer for me.
