I liked this, but I didn't totally love it. I guess I had an idealistic view of Take That from my youth, and this book takes you right through Gary Barlow's life from before he joined Take That, afterwards, and right through to the Take That reunion and tour. I love the insights into his life, seeing the experiences, which you get both good and bad. Getting to see what it's like meeting Elton John and feel like you are mingling with the stars is great, but I wasn't prepared for the negative side of the band and his experiences as a solo artist. You really get to see what life was like behind-the-scenes, the good, the bad and the ugly. It shattered my view of the perfect life, you see what their manager, Nigel Martin-Smith, was really like with the band, and the way Robbie Williams treated Gary and the bad press and how it affected Gary.
It's not an idealistic view of his life and the band, it's a very realistic one. Definitely eye-opening and surprising. I personally would have liked a more idealistic view, but perhaps that's my wishful thinking in wanting to be transported back to the 1990's and have the clean-cut boy band image back, that I idolised so much in my youth. If you're prepared for the negative aspects as well as the good, and want to know what truly happened as the band was put together, working through the life in the band and coming out the other side, then read this. If you prefer to see the rosy side of life only (like me), then don't!
