This collection was just what I needed for the spooky season. This book encompasses so many themes and styles of horror that there is sure to be at least one story that works for every person.

Some stories are long while others are just a few pages. I personally love collections like this because sometimes you can only sit and read for a minute or two. I was able to move around the collection with ease and finished it pretty quickly.

The themes overall are fairly dark and definitely creepy. I highly recommend grabbing this even though spooky season has come to a close. Stories like these are perfect for horrifying you all year long.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

This collection of short horror stories was absolutely perfect for spooky season and I thoroughly enjoyed each and every one!

Fantastic writing, all stories had be gripped and reading through them rapidly. It was really nice to have some short and twisted stories to jump into between bigger books this spooky season. I feel that some of the stories could definitely have been made into longer, full novels and had left me wanting more from them.

I am definitely looking forward to reading more from this author in the future!

I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the readalong hosted by Lovebookstours.

Tha Angel's Gate and Other Stories is the perfect creepy compilation for a dark winter night. The book consists of several stories, all of a dark, ominous, or creepy nature that are pretty much open to where your mind wants to take them. Each one is easy to get into and leaves you wanting to start the next one soon after reading. This is the first book by G. P. Ritchie and I will definitely be looking forward to reading more of his writings as this book was a perfect blend of weird and mysterious, which I love over the Halloween period especially. My favourite stories from this collection were the Angel's Gate, Oubliette, and Chicken House.

Each and every story has an eerie, chilling vibe that I personally love. While each of the 13 stories varies in length and levels of horror, I would recommend them all. This is a book that I will keep on my shelves and read again. From Edinburgh to Alaska each story is immersive and unsettling.

Anthologies or short story collections can always be hit or miss, but wow. Within that beautifully macabre and simultaneously mysterious cover were 13 very different stories all by the talented G.P. Ritchie. This was my first time reading anything by this particular author and I now feel the need to raid their backlog.

When I look at collections, I rate each one separately before I come to a consensus on the book as a whole. Even my least favorite, I enjoyed immensely and found much more to love than dislike. This may be a near perfect introduction. There are, of course, dark themes, and you know what you can handle best, so be mindful. It is horror after all.

Thank you so very much to @LoveBookTours and @NightsBorderPress for sending me this beautiful paperback for purposes of review. My opinions are, as always, both honest and entirely my own.

This book is perfect for anyone who enjoys something a little bit strange, not easily explained and a dash of paranoia from their characters.
The short stories are ideal for dipping in and out of - especially if you find your reading time limited. With these you can enjoy whole stories in limited time.
I loved that there were links to other books by the author. There’s always something nice about a familiar name popping up.
There were some stories which were just a little too abstract for me however I enjoyed reading outside my comfort zone and there were a few which I particularly enjoyed. The title story ‘The Angel’s Gate’ was a firm favourite. I found the characters and the plot believable and really enjoyed the concept of the story and the way it was written.
It was also lovely to be reunited with DI Lorimar and Dorian again in this book.
If you are looking for something a little out of the ordinary then The Angel’s Gate is definitely worth diving in to.

This was so entertaining, each story is unique with eerie and macabre vibes, and supernatural themes.
The 13 stories cover some dark and traumatic themes and explore desires, consequences, fears, revenge and spirituality.
They range from dreams of having children, spiritual theft, penance by song, wanting a better body and to be seen differently but getting more than you bargained for, hauntings, creepy folklore, and finding things that go bump in the night.
The stories range in length so it's the kind of book you can pick up and dive into at any time. The stories are creepy, vivid, disturbing, sinister and gripping.

My favourites - Swole, Original features, Chicken House & Oubliette.

In The Angel's Gate: And Other Mysteries, we have a collection of short stories, all very different and unique in their own way. All mysterious, peculiar and some quite dark and sinister.

I'm sure, like me, you'll find yourself turning the pages long after you should have gone to sleep to get to the end of one of the stories, and you may even decide to leave that bedside lamp on a little longer than usual, ha ha.

The stories I enjoyed the most were The Angel’s Gate and Chicken House, Alaska, and I read this on and off over about a week or so.

5 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 's from me.

This was my second read by G.P Ritchie and I’ve really come to enjoy their style of writing. I especially loved how their last book I read was incorporated into the last story of this book. It was a pleasant surprise to read those familiar character names 😉
I also enjoyed all the other different creepy and weird stories and how some were super short (like literally only a few pages) but they were still super impactful., honestly at end of Chicken House, Alaska my jaw literally dropped and I just stared at the page for ages like ‘naaaah that was actually savage 😅’
An overall great collection of eerie and brilliantly strange stories., loved it 🖤

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'The Angel's Gate' by G.P. Ritchie.

OMG!!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE, LOVE ,LOVED THIS BOOK, AN ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, GRIPPING AND PAGE TURNING EXPLOSIVE MUST READ!!

'The Angels Gate' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. These stories discuss/include

This book is very well written with vivid descriptions that absolutely grip the readers attention and puts them right in the middle of it all making your heart pound and you constantly second guessing.

An addictive and horrific collection of 13 short stories filled with blood, gore, science fiction, karma, twists, horror and absolutely everything you could ask for in a gripping page turner. As I always do with books of short stories or poems I will rate them individually and then give an overall rating at the end. These are the stories that are included in order, a short description of what they are about and my rating:

🤰Mother's Mercy: What an absolutely fantastic story to set the scene of this brilliant book and get the blood pumping and your mind whirling!! in this short story we meet Lisa who is desperate for a baby but after her husband leaves her in the worst way possible and her heart breaks at the start she wonders if she will ever get the chance. While out on a walk she meets an elderly lady called Peg and everything changes. This really is a great way to start a book and kicks it off with a 5/5 from me!

🥯Dissolution: One of the most random, strangest stories I have ever come across!! Constable Jamie Devlin is on a stake out and trying to enjoy his custard doughnut. He is disturbed by a young man called Razu Daz who tells him a strange tale involving the French, alcohol, a barn, a Ouija board and popping eggs!!! 3/5 for this one.

🍹The Soldier's Daughter: Maeve is out for drinks with her friends one minute refusing to sing and has been captured the next. She is tied to a chair and after speaking of her mother her captor has a request from her which ends unexpectedly. 2/5.

💪 Swole: This short story is split into four separately named parts. Part l is called 'Gym Rats And Other Reunions'. Part ll is called 'Fish Kings And Clever Capos'. Part lll is called 'Second Monkey'. Part lV is called @night At The End Of The Funnel'. This is a story about Tony wanting to be bigger and fitter but without going down the steroids route again. He finds a way but once he starts there's only one way it can end. 3/5

🤠 The Unforsaken: The Sheriff of Burr's Creek goes on the hunt for his Deputy Jake. They had survived Yellow Fever together but now The Phantom has taken Jake. He heads to Silver Cloud ghost town where there is a showdown but not the one he expected. 2/5

🙏 The Angel's Gate: An interesting story about an inmate called Leo who through his personal commentary's we discover went to a seminary where he was bullied by a teacher Brother Andrew for his past. After some teachings from his Aunt he discovers 'The Angel's Gate'. I really enjoyed the story but the ending let me down. 4/5

🐍 Figure Eight: We return to the same prison from the previous story but with a different inmate called Blevins. Blev is due to be released in 2 days but believes the world outside will make him worse then inside and decides to end it. A message from inmate barber Grizz changes his journey and we also meet Leo again from 'The Angel's Gate'. 4/5

🔪 Original Features: Will purchases a home and spends 6 months renovating it. However on his first night he starts hearing voices which he assumes are his neighbours until he realises they are coming from closer than next door. A creepy and gory story deserves a 5/5

👮Anniversary Man: Mac is determined to solve the case of The Anniversary Man even letting his wife and Grandchild down when they are all meant to be going to Disney World together. Mac discovers a lead but wishes he hadn't. 5/5

❄️ Under The Ice: Ella has lived in the cold stone house by a loch for 50 years and wakes up to scratches on her door. An ending I didn't see coming 3/5

🐶Chicken House, Alaska: Ella meets Baba Yaga in this story when she faces fear to save her beloved dog Mishka. She has choices to make and nightmares to push past. Absolutely loved this one which has to be my favourite so far. Gripping and vivid descriptions and settings. 5/5

🪖Remembrance Day 1968: Our protagonist comes home to find someone has been in his house and left something that reminds him of what he did to a fellow soldier 50 years ago. 3/5

⌛Oubliette: This short story is split into three separately named parts. Part l is called 'The Weight'. Part ll is called 'The Search'. Part lll is called 'The Price'. A fantastic short story to end on, a novella in itself. I love the fact that I got to meet Andy again from 'Ritchie's 'One Night Only' again which is another book I would highly recommend. This story is filled with revenge, supernatural, death and more and definitely hits one of my favourite story lists giving it a 5/5. The perfect story to end this great book with!

An absolutely fantastic collection of magical, disturbing, suspenseful and tension packed horrific short stories!!! A fantastic collection of short stories with an excellent range of situations, characters, locations and narratives. My favourite ones had to be 'Mother's Mercy', 'Original Features', 'Anniversary Man', 'Chicken House, Alaska' and 'Oubliette' These stories include suspense, horror, tension, murder, fantasy, the supernatural and much more! There is a great mix of stories so there is definitely something in there for everyone. The cover is absolutely amazing and it was one of the things that drew me to the book. This book is ideal to be able to pick up and read a story during a break or while making a cuppa!! I would probably avoid reading them as a bedtime story though!!! I am a huge fan of horror stories and the gorier the better for me!!! The excellent descriptions throughout ensures you feel the hair raising on your arms and the chill on your skin!!! The fact that these are short stories also allows you to pick it up and read a story at a time or read it in one sitting which is perfect for those who like to read multiple books at one time. G.P. Ritchie has excellent writing skills and and I look forward to reading more of his work! The average rating for all the story ratings is 3.77 so I give the overall book a 4/5 rating

Grab your copy of 'The Angel's Gate' and discover which stories you love!!!

Overall a brilliant selection of creepy, horror and suspense filled stories with something for everyone!!

Here is my review for The Angel’s Gate by GP Ritchie

This book of short story anthologies was a brilliant read as the stories varied so much and the lengths of the stories varied too. There were many really good stories all penned by the author and the really good one included DI Andy Loremar from the book One Night Only is also by this author. I enjoyed reading all the stories and answering the questions which were set as part of our month-long readalong. They were general questions which related to the chapter they were set against. It was a good way to read the book which meant reading so many chapters at a time before answering a question, there were ten questions to answer. The stories are well written and all have different names, some seem obvious to the story, some didn’t to me. I like the planning of the stories and the layout as they were mixed up and not all the same sort of story together. It’s a good read with a good variation of stories but totally different to One Night Only which is a detective story.

Blurb :

Decisions are doorways, whether everyday or fundamental, all lead somewhere... But some choices reach a strange domain, a dark junction on the boundary between possession and loss, good and evil, life and death… A place where what should not be, somehow becomes what is.

" [...] Just remember, where there is room for condemnation, perhaps there is also room for redemption. [...]"

"The Angel's Gate and other mysteries" by G.P. Ritchie is a collection of dark stories. I liked some of them, and unfortunately not some. You will find here stories perfect for Halloween. It is worth reading them in the evening, for better and unforgettable emotions. Goosebumps, shivers and chills guaranteed.

The best stories from this book are:

- "Mother's Mercy"
Here you will meet old lady Peg, her son James and Lisa - a girl who wants to become a mother. Will a mysterious amulet help her?

- "The Soldier's daughter"
Maeve - the daughter of former soldier Alan Gordon. Are you sure you want to hear her sing?

- "Swole"
Tony Minetti goes to a job interview at his mother's favourite restaurant. Mysterious Steve and his perfectly made-up figure. What did he find on the darknet? Is Ape-x a safe drug to take?

- "The Angel's Gate"
Here I met Leo Hariman, a young student in a monastery and a Jesuit brother Andrew. Brother Andrew is a very explosive man and in my opinion he was far from God. This character scared me a lot. Leo is a lost young man, his thoughts were very disturbing to me.

In his stories, the author gives us a dark world. Horror lovers will find a lot of stories for themselves here.

At the end of the book you will find great images. The author explains how they were created. It is worth looking at them after reading all the stories.

The cover is very dark and catches the eye of potential readers.

I forgot to mention that all the stories are of different lengths.
It is worth reading "The Angel's Gate and other mysteries" by G.P. Ritchie.

Having read One Night Only last month, and absolutely loving it, I couldn't pass up the chance to join this Read-Along for the second book by this author.

This was not, as I'd been expecting, a sequel to the first book - but instead, a collection of short stories.
With the cover looking very similarly dark and spooky, I'd just assumed that we were continuing Andy's story - so it was really refreshing to find something a little different here.

This book contains 13 pieces of varying lengths.
I usually like to read short stories over lunch times and as a reading palate cleanser - but some of the bigger stories needed much more time to read and digest....therefore, I read this normally over a few weeks which fitted with the read-along format.

I often find with short stories, I can't always connect with the characters, due to the length or concept of the story, but here I really felt that the characters were well presented and developed through each story and I really got a sense of them, even in the more plot driven pieces.

There were a mix of themes explored within this collection and I loved that they all had some relevance to the modern world we all live in.....but with a much more sinister vibe.
I can't get enough of the odd, disturbing and often creepy takes on sometimes everyday events that just leave you feeling that little bit uncomfortable!

This genre is definitely one of my favourites and I really enjoyed the diversity within this collection.
The settings and characters were well planned and used to form the base of each story - with some really well written, unusual and quirky storylines which all had me gripped throughout.

I'll be keeping this author on my tbr radar now and look forward to seeing much more in the future.

The Angel’s Gate is a collection of dark and bleak short stories, venturing into the depths of humanity’s darkest instincts whilst exploring themes of obsession, vanity, betrayal and moral destruction. Definitely bleak and gritty, this book contains a plethora of haunting tales that seek to shock readers with its blunt and morally grey characters and plots.

While the book succeeds in its ability to create atmosphere and tension, for me, I felt as though the book leant more on the shock value within the different short stories, rather than the depth of characters and their journeys. Whilst this is perfect for readers who wish to be drawn into a haunting depiction of society, it left me feeling a little detached from the characters, and as result, the stories they were a part of.

Each tale sets the scene placing their characters at the forefront of the narrative. You are not always supposed to like the main character, and it is through this that the author provides the opportunity to unravel the disturbing truths that build each storyline’s foundations. Each story effectively builds tension, creating an unsettling atmosphere, devoid of emotion and completely disturbing. You will not find emotional or narrative closure between these pages, but instead be greeted by stories that will leave you with many questions.

If you're a long-time follower, you're probably surprised to see a horror title here - even if was for spooky month. But, I decided to branch out and thought that a book of short stories would be a good way to start. Not to mention, was told they weren't "too spooky." Of course, that is subjective. Some of them got me a little more than I would have liked. But there is just no way to figure that out ahead of time!

I'm not really sure what happened to me. I once said in an interview that if I could meet anyone it would be Edgar Allan Poe. Granted, I was more a fan of his Gothic unrequited love poetry. But, still, I didn't mind his other stories. Now, I'm generally a big ol' scaredy cat.

But I did enjoy my foray into horror. The author didn't quite convert me, but he did convince me that my total ban should be reconsidered - which is high praise for his writing. I also don't think I got any nightmares. I'm not sure if that's praise in his book, but it's praise in my anxiety-addled, scaredy-cat little brain. I enjoyed many of the stories - shoutouts specifically to "Mother's Mercy" and "Dissolution." "The Soldier's Daughter" terrified me in a slow burn, lingering way, as did the titular "The Angel's Gate." My favorite, which I thought I might not like from the description, was "Swole." It was a great story and explored so much of the human condition.

This was a really good, varied collection of short stories. From subjects such as murd3r, drugs, faith and sacrifice with everything in between. If you delved beneath the surface most of the stories had a theme of decisions and how the choices we make can affect us.

I think my favourite story was 'Swole' and it's narrative on body image and the potential side effects of the drugs some people can be tempted to take to achieve that perfect body. Of course these effects are exaggerated, but I found it to be a fascinating take on gym culture.

I also really enjoyed the appearance of One Night Only's Andy Lorimar in the standalone story 'Oubliette" even if it take me half of the story to realise why his name was so familiar!

Overall this was a brilliant collection of short stories. The collection of pictures at the end, along with the explanation as to why G.P Ritchie chose to use AI was really good too. It was really interesting to see how the author's imagination of things differed from my own.

In The Angel's Gate, G.P. Ritchie masterfully weaves together a tapestry of haunting narratives that resonate with the complexities of choice and consequence. Each story serves as a doorway into a realm where the boundaries of good and evil blur, leading readers to places ripe with both wonder and dread.

From the heart-wrenching sacrifice of a mother to the chilling journey of a seminarian navigating faith and darkness, Ritchie explores the depths of human desire, loss, and courage. The poignant tale of a silent child in Chicken House, Alaska, and the harrowing struggles of an ex-convict in Figure Eight echo the realities of addiction and grief, reminding us that every decision carries weight.

The Angel's Gate is not just a collection of stories; it’s an exploration of the dark corners of the human psyche, a reminder that the paths we choose can lead to unimaginable consequences. A must-read for fans of horror, crime, and the surreal.

This is a book with a collection of short stories, if you are a fan of the dark and weird then this is definitely worth the read. The stories were all written so well and some were spooky and dark and some I thought were just down right weird. But they all left me feeling something.
The stories were very macabre and dark, but also touched on some very true situations and feelings, which made for some good reading, I especially liked chicken legs, which was so creepy but also very sad and I also enjoyed swole, again creepy, but also so relatable to life! And the first story, mother's mercy, well let's just say it gave me shivers!
What I like about this book, is there is a story for everyone, some I loved more than others, but overall it was an interesting read, certainly making the hairs on my next rise. If you are ever stuck for a book for the spooky season, then this one should definitely go on the list.

After this I think I need to read something light and fluffy 😂

This was a super interesting read! A completely different concept to anything I’ve read for a while. A superbly written set of short stories that all have hints of something spooky or paranormal and even though I’d normally be scared of such things - I found that because it was all short stories I didn’t get so easily freaked out!

All of the stories were interesting but I think my favourite to read was Swole. I just loved how the story progressed. It was also one of the longer reads with a few parts so I got more invested with the characters.

If you like spooky things - this is perfect! I’d like me you are on the fence, it is definitely worth picking up as the author is such a great writer that you can’t help but enjoy the work.

A real solid autumn vibes read that I’m glad I got to be a part of!

This book was perfect for Spooky Season - creepy!

This is a collection of short stories of the weird, wonderful, and unexpected so it's perfect as a book you can dip in and out of when you fancy reading something a little different.

You can tell G.P. Ritchie's imagination has run wild in some of these, and I love it!

The format of this book is also very different in that there are little illustrations dotted throughout that were really lovely and helped to break the stories up.

One of the most intriguing stories is the story. This collection is named after, Ths Angel Gate. This story has a mixture of narrative and diary entries of a sort, so it keeps the intrigue high.

The story is creepy and has an unexpected ending, which is mirrored in almost all these stories.

A great book for Spooky season!

RATING: 4.5/5

I’m dating myself, but G.P. Ritchie’s “The Angel’s Gate” gives off The Twilight Zone Vibe. And when I say The Twilight Zone, I mean the OG, eerie, chilling, black-and-white version—young readers, look it up.

The vibe is prevalent throughout all 13 short stories in the book. The stories vary in length and have unusual and disturbing creepiness levels—it’s good to have options, right? “The Angel’s Gate was an enjoyable read, putting me in the right mood as the spooky season approaches. I can see myself returning to the stories each year, picking, choosing, and re-reading to set the mood again.

This book was amazing. Every story was different and I was hooked on each one of them. O how I wish each story could be an actual book because they were so well done and well written. The ones that were my favorite were the gym one. Where they take supplements to make them feel better about themselves but in the end they don't and wow it was so realistic and I mean I could totally see it happening.
I loved the last story and I really need more of that one.
How that ended I was not prepared for in the least. I loved the characters in this one and honestly everything about it. I don't want to say to much without giving anything away cause I feel like this one I would. I just have to say I need more by this author. I need of these stories or better yet whole books!!! Go get this book !!!

🍂I am not really a fan of short stories, i always feel like something is missing, they are made in a hurry. But when it's about horror, they hit different. And that happened with The Angel's Gate, a book with 13th horror stories. A perfect number of stories, all of them being dark and macabre. I can't say which one is my favourite because i devoured all of them. Maybe Oubliette or Chicken House, Alaska.

The stories were so creepy that put this book on the top! Definitely a book for Halloween season! Thank you so much @nightsborderpress and @lovebookstours for my copy and goodies. Also, i was so happy to take part at the readalone.

I do enjoy a short story collection, and this was a Halloween treat. With some very short tales, others of novella length, and two consisting of three or four parts, there is a lot of variety. Titles include The Angel’s Gate, which sees the return of Andy Lorimar from the author's last book.

Although these short stories are ideal for slotting in when you have a few spare moments here and there, they are both seductive and spooky, so don't be surprised if you find yourself reading cover to cover without realising!

This contains 13 short stories. Some only a page or two, while some are more like novellas.
They are all pretty creepy, I don't recommend reading this just before bedtime!
As I tend to find with short stories, they often don't make much sense to me, I very much need explanation! In that respect, I struggled with this. However, I can appreciate that it was well-written, had lots of variation in the stories, and to the right audience, will definitely be enjoyed.

I loved that this was a collection of different stories with a ghostly twist. I enjoyed some stories more than others but overall I found each one had an interesting element to them. They were all excellently written and showed a good level of research into the occult mixed with some modern day devices. There were lots of curious characters involved in each tale. The perfect book to pick up at this time of year - happy Halloween! 🎃

I honestly didn't quite get in to some of the stories, but I did like the anniversary man, under the ice these stories more like what I read, I do like mysteries but with the folklore I struggled to understand and figure them out I don't think I'm into folklore mysteries but if you like them this is the book to read it has speculative folklore mysteries.

‘The Angel’s Gate’ is a great collection of 13 short stories - each story unique and captivating. Each story is vivid and thought provoking, some stories may test a few people’s triggers but the stories are all interesting. Some of the tales can be a little disturbing but that’s what all good horror is - I think my favourite story was Anniversary Man. G.P Ritchie is a very good writer of tense tales. This collection is gripping and I am very glad I read it, especially leading up to Halloween.

The Angel’s Gate by G.P.Ritchie.
I loved the cover of this book. It's what drew me to sign up. There is 13 short stories in the book. Some are only a few pages while others were longer. The stories in this book were definitely different. I liked some more than others. Some I wasn't sure how I felt about the story. It may be because they were short. The stories were very well written. This book was Dark, creepy, and eerie.

I loved these creepy stories around the Halloween season. There are so many well written short stories that will make you shiver. If you like dark spooky stories you'll love this anthology! There are several themes in this book, like moms having children, spiritual stealing, and more. I have to say my favorite one on this was Mother's Mercy. But there are so many others that are great reads too!

I highly recommend this creepy read to all!
