Where murder mystery and family saga collide—with deceptively charming Charleston as a backdrop.
As a middle child, Boston native Kathryn Moore has always struggled to fit into her nouveau riche family and would rather do anything than carry on with the family business. Her aspirations lie in more artistic to become a writer like her uncle, which strains her already turbulent relationship with her mother.
After Kathryn’s uncle, her mentor and confidante, dies tragically in a car accident, she learns he has bequeathed his Charleston home to her, and life changes in ways she never could have predicted. But was his untimely death an accident or is the truth more sinister than that?
As she grapples with his death and delves deeper into the circumstances surrounding it, Kathryn struggles with visions she has little control over. She can’t help but wonder if the act of logging them into her notebook along with her story ideas etches the visions into reality. Could she be responsible for all the misery left in her wake—including her uncle’s death?
National multi-award-winning author Penny Goetjen writes mysteries, crime fiction, and suspense novels where the settings are so colorful they become characters in their own right. A self-proclaimed eccentric, she enjoys the serenity of writing with the allure of flickering candlelight often late into the evening, the chaos while perched at a hi-top table in a local coffee shop with half the caffeinated world walking by, and the romance of strolling in a long flowy skirt while observing the world and collecting characters. Seven published novels in and her husband still sleeps with one eye open.
An intriguing premise that delivered in spades, Deadly Ripples was a well-written love letter to the city of Charleston as well as a quick, easy read. Filled with converging plot lines and a dynamite dysfunctional family, I was just as captivated by the various characters as I was by the setting. But it was the deft mix of a light murder mystery with a generational family saga that hit all the right chords. Naturally interwoven, it was both original and remarkably well done.
The absolute best pieces of the puzzle, however, were the evocative descriptions that made Charleston come alive. Sadly for me, I’ve never had the pleasure of visiting. Through Penny Goetjen’s words, however, I could see it all. The pastel colored homes with shimmering gardens. The delicious foods that I’d love to devour. Even the fierce storms that must ravage the area. All together, a vivid portrait was drawn—one that beckons me from afar to visit some day soon.
The only teensy, tiny flaw that I found was the sense that it was almost a short story expanded. Somewhat light on action, it depended more on telling than showing. That’s not to say that I didn’t inhale every word. After all, the long-hidden secrets and hints at the truth kept my eyes firmly pinned to the page. And that was also all before the storm quite literally descended and managed to shock me but good.
All in all, thanks to interesting characters, thought-provoking themes, and even a paranormal element or two, I was quickly pulled into this eerie narrative right from the start. Add in the rather unexpected twist and whirlwind climax, and it was no surprise that I finished this book in just a matter of hours. Needless to say, I recommend giving this one a go. Sure to keep your attention, the steady pace and soul-satisfying conclusion will surely win you over, no doubt about it. Rating of 4 stars.

3⭐️ Thank you, author Penny Goetjen, for this ARC giveaway win! She provided a note to “enjoy your trip to Charleston” and I definitely felt immersed in the city!
Kathryn is headed to Charleston from Boston after news of her uncle’s passing and learning she inherited his home. When she gets to Charleston she falls in love with the charm of the city, but as far as her uncle’s death/disappearance, things just don’t add up.
This is told through Kathryn’s POV. She’s in her early thirties, but her age wasn’t revealed for quite awhile and I had initially assumed she was much younger. I liked the paranormal/visions aspect and how all the twists came together at the end. Some of the writing was repetitive (ex: the description of Kathryn’s relationship with her mom). This book has quick/short chapters (love!) which makes it a great book to read in just a few sittings.
A captivating mystery! A tinge of the paranormal, like a light breeze tickling your skin; gives the tale an added dimension of the unexpected. You will gasp out loud while pondering what could possibly happen next. Also, taking a trip to picturesque Charleston, South Carolina, with its cobblestone streets and architecture, you can envision being there, enjoying some history along the way.
Penny Goetjen is one of my favorite authors and I knew her story; “Deadly Ripples,” would not disappoint me. She is a master storyteller; from setting the perfect scenes, to her flawless narrative skill. She makes the story come alive; giving readers a great connection to the characters. If you like engaging mysteries; a little eerie atmosphere and a story that grabs you from the first page, don’t hesitate to read this book soon! Penny Goetjen, I will read anything you write!
Since I started my bookstagram, I have discovered some incredible authors, and this incredible author happens to be a local one. I see her often at book events supporting other local authors, and I absolutely love that! I was beyond excited to have the opportunity to read this ARC, and I'm SO happy I did! It was SO good!
Kathryn Moore is from Boston. She's the middle child, and she has never fit in with her family. She's nothing like either of her parents. She still lives at home and works at her father’s business, but that's not what she wants to do with her life. She wants to be a writer like her Uncle Gray. She doesn't see him that often but has always felt a strong connection to him. When he dies in a tragic car accident, she's devastated. She soon finds out he has left his house in Charleston to her. Soon, she finds herself in Charleston trying to wrap her head around why the house was left to her. As she explores, she begins to wonder if his death was really an accident. She has visions that tell a different story, and she's determined to get to the bottom of it.
This was an engrossing read that was unputdownable! I actually read it in one sitting. I was captivated by the writing, and I absolutely loved the setting! The descriptions of Charleston actually made me feel like I was there again! The mystery was intriguing, there was lots of family drama, and even a bit of paranormal. There were also plenty of twists to keep me on my toes! This was such a great book, and I would highly recommend it!
Wow!!! What an awesome book. I can usually guess where things are going and who did what, early in a story, but I couldn’t this one. From page one I was drawn in. I felt like I was right there experiencing everything as it happened. I really enjoyed it and would definitely read it again.
Surprise after surprise!! Kathryn life was definitely not without excitement, adventure, surprise moments and scary moments! This book had me thinking to myself oh my goodness what is going to happen next! I absolutely loved it! It definitely deserves all five stars!
This book is a personal tour of Charleston, South Carolina. Penny Goetjen is your guide to all the best places to eat, shop and sight see in Charleston. I’ve never wanted to visit the area more than I do now. I can smell the candied pecans from here. Once you get over the fabulous setting, you are knee deep in a murder mystery and family drama. Kathryn Moore’s family is a train wreck, and you can help but stare at the carnage. They play a key role, but in the background, to Kathryn’s quest to find her uncles murderer. There are too many secrets to hold in forever, and are about to be revealed. Kathryn is a character I could read more of. I know this is a standalone book, but I can see more books with Kathryn in them. She has a future in SC we need to explore, and a family that will never leave her alone. I feel like Uncle Gray has backstory we need! I love these characters and how attached the reader becomes to them. Yes the story setting is everything, but the characters really drive this story.
Captivating story, A mystery. With several twists that will keep you right there on the edge.Because, well, you need to know what really happened. The end has a wow factor.
Katherine, A girl who inherits everything her uncle left her. But soon she finds out theres more to the story. There's death or is there. There's a mystery all wrapped up in this story. It's an Intriguing story.
Absolutely enjoyed this book. It's is full of twists and turns that keep you reading turning the pages into the night.
Deadly Ripples is a suspenseful, addictive murder mystery that will grasp you from the first page. I started it without thinking that I was going to be completely consumed by it and binge it in less than 24h. The author's writing was truly so easy flowing while at the same time the scenes were so vividly described that I could feel the eeriness of it all. It is my first by this author and definitely not my last.
The story was really interesting to follow, the family drama, the murder mystery, all the secrets to uncover and you can't help but keep reading to figure it all out. I loved how it all interconnected, the twists and turns that I wasn't expecting.
What truly surprised me.. There is a paranormal aspect to it, but it was light, it was so well done, it was intricately placed and it honestly made sense and felt real (if that even makes any sense). I usually do not enjoy books with that in them, so when an author can make me love a book with that, that says a lot about the author's writing skills!
✨️Thank you to @pennygoetjen for my gifted ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What started as a gripping thriller with a supernatural twist turned into a Cozy Mystery, all wrapped up with a cute bow. While I have nothing against Cozy Mysteries, I do not enjoy them.
Pluses - The characters were well written, the dialog was realistic and the initial plot direction was very good.
Minuses - WAY too much detail on how fabulous Charleston is. It’s beautiful, has wonderful architecture, food unlike any place on earth. I get it. Please move on. The relationship between Kathryn and Mason was very sweet and I loved the pacing of it. Was very disappointed when it was not mentioned for the last quarter of the book and was mentioned in passing in the epilogue.
Am I glad I read it? Yes, because I really like Kathryn and was interested in her “gift” and also how she came into herself as the book progressed.
Would I recommend it? Yes, but with the knowledge that it is a Cozy Mystery, not a thriller with a supernatural twist
The best advice that I can give a reader when they start reading Deadly Ripples by Penny Goetjen is to PAY ATTENTION !!
Goetjen's latest title, Deadly Ripples, has significant meaning throughout the book and readers need to be paying attention or you may miss important and significant signs. Let's start with one definition of the word ripples, seeing as I believe deadly is easy to interpret. Ripples can be defines as a particular feeling or effect that spreads through someone or something ... and when you add the word deadly you never know what you are seeing or not seeing.
In Deadly Ripples Kathryn learns that her uncle has died. Kathryn has always felt closest to her uncle so when her mother tells her showing no emotions whatsoever, it hits her hard. Then she learns that her uncle has willed his estate to her in Charlton. So Kathryn packs a bag and heads to Charlton with the intention of hiring a realtor and putting the estate on the market.
Unfortunately once she gets there, she falls in love with the area and soon learns that her uncle's death may not have been accidental. So along with her new friend, Mason, she begins looking into the accident. But Kathryn has these "episodes" or visions, and sees things that may or may not have happened, or are going to happen, that make her question if what she is doing is the right thing. However, before she can fully grasp what is happening things will blow out of proportion and it may be life or death for her ....
Goetjen will have readers on the edge of their seats. If you have read any of her previous books, you know the drill. Get comfy, have a snack and drink handy, silence your phone, lock the door and settle in ... you are not going anywhere anytime soon. You may want to let a friend or family member know that you will be lost in a book for the foreseeable future so that the police don't show up at your door because someone thought you went missing.
Some very unexpected twists and turns in an otherwise common whodunit genre. Really enjoyed the main characters but kind of wish it had gone into more detail with each. Felt a bit slow in the beginning, then picked up speed and just kept racing to the end. Wrapped up a little too neatly but still an enjoyable ride.
Boston native Kathryn Moore struggled to fit into her nouveau riche family. They want her to take over the family brewery and she wants to be a writer like her Uncle Gray. Gray was her mentor and confident and the only one that believed in her. When Gray dies in a car accident, Kathryn is shocked to learn she inherited his house in Charleston, SC.
Kathryn goes to Charleston with the intentions of putting the house up for sale. But she falls in love with the city. While investigating the accident Kathryn has visions that she writes down in her notebook. Does writing down the visions make them become reality? Was Gray's death really an accident?
Deadly Ripples is a page turner mystery and family saga. Charleston comes to life in the description of the sites and food of the city. I like the paranormal aspect that added to the mystery of Gray's death. There are several possible suspects and twists that I didn't see coming. I enjoyed this mystery and I am looking forward to reading Penny's backlist.
This was a suspenseful story about a girl who inherited her uncles house after he died. Many people tried to get her to let it go, but she was suspicious that it wasn’t an accident. Things are not always as simple as they seem. There was a good amount of suspense and some shocking and exciting moments. I also found a lot of humor throughout the story! I found myself chuckling a lot.
I recently was in Charleston for the first time and it was fun picturing the places we visited as the author mentioned them in the book. This was my first time reading a book from this author and I will definitely be reading more from her.
What an amazing mystery set in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina. If you are a fan of mysteries nobody does it better than Penny Goetjen. Go to Charleston as Kathryn Moore from Boston, Maryland does after inheriting her beloved uncle Gray's home. After arriving to put her uncle's home on the market there appears to be more to Kathryn's uncle's death. There are secrets to be undercovered in Kathryn's nouveau rich family. I didn't want to set this book down!! I wanted to know who, what, and why? There is what I call paranormal activity in this mystery which I found fascinating. Once you pick this novel up you will not want to put it down till the last page.
Thank you to Penny Goetjen for my ARC copy. The opinions are all my own.
I was excited to receive an ARC copy of this book to read. Fans of thrillers with enjoy this trip down south to Charleston. Kathryn Moore has arrived in Charleston after she is shocked to find out that her beloved uncle has died and left her his huge house in Charleston. When Kathryn arrives with her many questions, she finds out that getting answers is not easy. Her uncle’s body has not been located and Kathryn becomes convinced that maybe his death was not an accident. As she does her own investigating, she finds that her uncle had a lot of secrets and someone doesn’t want her to know what they were- is that person responsible for her uncles death? The book has a touch of the supernatural which paired well with the setting of the book and the mysterious circumstances Kathryn encounters. I like that the book captured my interest and that the book has surprises that you won’t see coming. A great read!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Deadly Ripples has twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end-and I did not see that ending coming. The pacing was quick making it impossible to put the book down. Kathryn is a complex FMC. She feels like an outsider, never really fitting in with her family so I really felt for her throughout the book. And the tension in the family! Who treats family like that?!? I was happy she could have the connection with her uncle that she did. The writing gave a vivid picture of the atmosphere that made me feel like I was in the story. It is a must-read for anyone who likes suspense!
I was given this book, by the author, to read ad an ARC. My review is unbiased. Being a middle child, Katheryn never felt like she was part of the family . Taking over the family business, beer making, wasn't what she wanted for her future. When her favorite uncle is mysteriously killed, she inherits his historic home. Traveling to the Low Country, to claim her inheritance, she begins investigating the accident that killed Grey. Visions start taking over attention. Who is leaving the notes on her uncle's typewriter? Is she losing her mind? Is there a spirit connected to the house, trying to lead her in the investigation? This book held my attention from the first page.
This mystery is a quick read filled with loving descriptions of Charleston. It kept me wanting to keep reading. I liked how she tied up all the stories in the end, I hate cliff-hanger books. My only critiques are how quickly some of the relationships were dropped or dismissed as new information came up and it didn't need the Sixth Sense aspect, the visions were interesting enough. Most people struggle with giving up relationships and even if they don't know someone well, are upset by seeing them killed. I will read more from this author as the story was interesting and although the ending seemed fast, I appreciate that there was a clear ending.
It was fast-paced but very well thought out and well-written. While I did predict one of the twists, there were quite a few that I was NOT expecting. I loved our FMC even if there were a couple times I wanted to shake her and be like “girl get it together!” I also loved the atmosphere of Charleston, SC and now want to make it a mission to go there some day. Overall? Definitely check this one out.
Kathryn is heartbroken when she gets the news that her uncle Gray was killed in automobile accident. She is surprised when she inherited her Uncle’s mansion in Charleston . She has always felt unloved as a middle child . Kathryn wanted to follow her uncle as a writer . She starts having visions of the accident so she starts asking questions. Lots of suspense of who was the suspect and was it really an accident .
Another enjoyable book by Penny Goetjen. This time you get to explore Charleston, while meeting some very likable characters. And some not so likable. I’ve been to Charleston before and now I can’t wait to go back! It’s a great book that keeps you on your toes wondering what the next twist might be.
I loved this book! Kathryn Moore goes to Charleston after she inherited her uncle's home. That's just the beginning of the story. There were twists and turns I didn't see coming. I was sucked in from page 1 and I couldn't put it down. Penny Goetjen's descriptions of Charleston really made me feel as if were there. This book was so good. I highly recommend it!
This was such a fun book! I loved the bits of paranormal and Kathryn’s visions throughout the book. I think those added to the charm of the book being set in Charleston and specifically in a historic house. The twists in the story were really good and I admit I was on the wrong track for most of it. This one definitely kept me up reading late into the night!
WOW! Deadly Ripples keeps you on the edge of your seat! A book that you can’t put down! Kathryn Moore has twists and turns that keeps her wondering about how her Uncle Gray died. The ending is unexpected.
Deadly Ripples by Penny Goetjen is a captivation book that keeps the reader engaged and turning the page. It is enticing and mysterious with surprises throughout the story. If you enjoy a good mystery, this book is for you.
Oh my goodness, Penny has done it again! Deadly Ripples is the fourth book of hers that I’ve read and like the others, it does not disappoint!! So exciting through out and kept me guessing!! Definitely recommend reading this!
