A Deep Well of Wisdom on Spiritual OBEs and Spirituality

This book by Mark & Lara at 640 pages, is a significant volume of information on out-of-body experiences and spirituality in general.

My initial impressions, because to be honest I am still working through the book (and likely will be for some time), are that no stone has been left unturned, no question that comes to my mind has been unanswered. You get the impression this book has been approached as a life work, not simply an interest in the topic.

Whether you are from one culture or another, one school of thought or another, or no thoughts at all and simply interested in learning about this intriguing experience, the content of this book covers everything you can think of, from early historical sources on out-of-body experiences and practices, found in different creeds, legends and texts through-out history, to modern day simple techniques that are practical and enjoyable.

Having read many books on the topic since the early 90s, I have yet to come across one this thorough, that not only explores out-of-body experiences and techniques, but explains and details clearly the realms (from the authors’ experience) which you can explore, what to expect, the beings and people you will meet, how to prepare yourself, and how to enter those realms fearlessly and with joyous intent on gaining spiritual knowledge.

The writing is clear, honest, and meticulously sourced, filled with personal experiences that give the book an authentic feel. The content is organised into five well-structured parts:

1. History – covering but not limited to: Ancient out-of-body experiences and dreams.
2. An overview of out-of-body experiences: scientific evidence of out-of-body experiences, the authors experiences, the dimensions, near death experiences, and a critical thinking analysis on out-of-body experiences.
3. Dreams and lucid dreaming: different types of dreams, their sources, how to recall them, and lucid dreaming.
4. Techniques for out-of-body experiences: an extensive list, from ancient to modern, from involved visualisations to simple and basic.
5. Type of beings and experiences: the different beings you can experience, how to approach them and feel comfortable doing so.

Those who enjoy learning about ancient history and religions will love much of the content, so much of the ancient historical sites have connections to this topic, and not only is the information presented clearly on this matter, but every step of the content provides heavily researched referencing at the back of the book. This book is full of illustrations from religions and legends to modern day practical diagrams explaining the processes of out-of-body experiences. The ‘cup’ image and explanation are a favourite of mine from the book.

In addition to historical and spiritual aspects, the authors also delve into modern topics such as psychedelics, a subject frequently discussed on popular podcasts (like Joe Rogan or Graham Hancock). To me, their views make a lot of sense, and they might be especially intriguing for those interested in psychedelics.

Overall, I find this book to be a resource I’ll return to repeatedly, experimenting with different techniques to discover what works best for me. As this is such a huge body of work, and with the time I currently have in my life, I look over the table of contents and choose what is interesting and then go to that, then try that out. Or when it’s late at night and I want to read something interesting I’ll just randomly grab a place within the book and let fate choose an interesting topic to read over and explore.

Final thoughts, I guess what strikes me about this book is how effectively the well-researched information removes a lot of misconceptions around the ideas on out-of-body experiences that you often hear on this topic; where here the authors have clearly identified how much this experience is common and indeed normal and has been part of our journey as humans since the recorded beginning of time, woven in myth and legends, religious experiences and figures, in modern times - UFO encounters, near death experiences and many more examples I won’t spoil to prospective readers.

Happy travels.

I am still reading the book, but after just the first two pages, I knew it was a great find. I have read several books on out-of-body experiences, and this one stands out—not only because of its thickness but also due to the wealth of information it offers. It is written in a simple, factual style, which is impressive given the complexity of the topic. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in out-of-body experiences, whether you're looking to have your first one or have already had many and wish to deepen your journey.

Update: I have finished reading the book. Right up until the last page, it was a truly inspiring read, often making me reflect on how I can improve myself to be a kinder and more understanding human being, as this seems vital in advancing in knowledge and progressing upwards. It also made me realise that the practice of astral projection and lucid dreaming is very ancient, and that people have been utilising these opportunities to advance spiritually for countless millennia.
