Who Said Mobsters Were Scary?

LEO

I left the US for a fresh start. A self-centered mafia heir with stalker tendencies is the last thing I need on my head. And the job he’s offering me? I’m definitely turning it down.

Except he’s sexy, charming and won’t take No for an answer. He stirs in me things no man has stirred before, but I blame that on the fact that I need to get laid.

After all, even straight guys can find other men hot when it’s been a while, right?

CHAI

I need a new bodyguard. But finding a good match is harder than you’d think.

Until Leo saves me from an ambush in one of Nagoya’s back alleys.
He’s reckless, a little wild and his pretty blue eyes are impossible to forget. My father won’t like him one bit, and not just because he’s a foreigner.

But I made up my mind the moment I caught Leo trying to spy on me. He had his chance and he blew it. Now I want him, and I won’t settle for less when he makes me look at him in a way I haven’t looked at a man before.

This fun & steamy MM mafia romcom features idiots to lovers, double bi-awakening, double himbo, a power couple with all the green flags, experimenting of the late night type, chaotic cinnamon roll MC, supportive friends and some plot & action to keep things exciting. While the setting itself is mafia, the story is NOT dark.

“I’m dead and I’ve gone to horny heaven.”

This sentence sums up my thoughts on this book. It was a fun lighthearted read, with double bi awakening, two himbo-ish dorks, and a bit of action. I loved it was set in Japan, and one of the characters is half-Japanese half-Thai. The start was a bit slow, but it needed the character and setting development. These two together a funny and a bit silly. Their list of fantasies and kinks was equal parts hot and endearing. They do not fumble too much through their newly discovered feelings and there's zero relationship angst, which I appreciated. The yakuza plot was interesting enough and even when it was easy to know who the evil dude was, I didn't mind because I didn't know how it was going to be revealed.
Stern dad Daichi and his obsession with certain famous cat character had me snorting my tea out of my nose.
And now I need Aran and Hex's story.

I want him. I want him and I don’t care if I’m gonna go crazy the moment I taste him.

A sexy read, but not much else.
I enjoyed the teasing and the sexual tension between Chai, Mafia boss’ son, and his new bodyguard Leo, but the plot is terribly boring.
The side characters are forgettable, the action and plot also underwhelming.

He kisses my chin, then my lips, hovering above me. “Yeah? You want to feel my hard cock pressing against you when I make you come with my hand?”

The public teasing and dirty talk was the best part, even better than the smut itself. These two were definitely sexy together, but beyond that I didn’t really feel any connection.
All in all, a quick, flirty read with a super simple plot.

CW and tropes (spoilers):
- Mafia/yakuza
- Bodyguard
- Double bi-awakening
- MC w/ tattoos
- Vers MCs
- Intergluteal frotting
- Thongs
- Toys
- Rimming
- 69

Leon "Leo" & Kwanchai "Chai"
Rating: 4.5 ⭐

- Mafia Romcom
- American/Thai & Japanese MCs
- Power Couple
- Idiots to Lovers
- Double Bi-Awakening
- Chaotic Cinnamon Roll MC
- Double Himbo
- Late Night Exploration
- Lingerie/Kinks/Toys

Kicking and screaming that this was cute, just sweetness all around! This is not a dark mafia read, so if that's what you are looking for keep moving. The book is instant obsession, action, sweet as honey moments, sexy times with explorations, and great friends.

Leo and Chai were made for each other with their dominance push and pull, the banter, and getting hot over each other when they see the other fighting. Leo is in Japan for an exchange program, while trying to run away from some trouble his ex got him into in the States. While out one night with his fellow students, he witnesses Chai in an altercation and jumps in to help him. From that moment on Chai is bound and determined to find the man, make him his bodyguard, and see why else he's obsessed with the American. Chai is half Thai and half Japanese, the next leader and he needs someone he can trust and that sees the problems that he sees.
"He’s shown he has bite. That he’s not afraid to turn my offer down and oppose me. The question is whether he is ready to suffer the consequences of that and the interest he sparked in me."

I loved that they both realized they were attracted to each other and just went with it. They didn't spiral out, just thoughtfully had a conversation with themselves that they indeed liked a man. They were also great with communication with one another, having little issues with expressing their feelings. There isn't a lot of sexy times in here, just a few scenes but they were all steamy, fun, and considerate when it came to their exploring. The couple went all in once they gave in to their attraction and their possessiveness was great.
"I chuckle, giddy and horny. Yes, Leo’s definitely a brat. But an adorable one that I plan to keep at my side no matter what awaits us."

That Diachi plot twist was too good and made me giggle! I'm looking forward to an Aran and Hex story!

3 stars!

This has all the bones and potential of a great bodyguard MM book but the execution didn’t work for me personally.

I liked both of the characters. They were both great guys so all of my stars go to them and the fact that they really care about each other a lot and they don’t see anyone else but each other.

But a lot of stuff in this book is far fetched and unrealistic. I’m all for love at first sight but when neither of these guys have been with men before, for them to look at each other and then become obsessed with each other after never having feelings for the same sex before made it unrealistic to me. I mean they don’t even have any worry about the fact that suddenly they like each other and can’t stop thinking about each other after meeting one time.

Also Leo being his bodyguard threw me for a loop too because there’s one part in this book where he literally runs away scared from something. He yelps and gets scared about things and so that doesn’t give off bodyguard vibes to me.

I wasn’t invested in the conflict with the villain at all. It didn’t hold my interest and it wasn’t even explained what the whole thing was about. It was kind of just all left up in the air.

At the end the convo between Leo and Chai’s dad where Leo tells him that he’s dating Chai was very cringe. The first thing he tells Chai’s dad is “it’s not just the great sex we have…” like for real you’re speaking to your boyfriend’s dad and that’s the first thing you say? Idk the whole convo was weird to me.

There’s also the annoying female bff you find in every MM romance. I didn’t like Naomi at all. She knew Leo for a few weeks and felt like she was entitled to know all his business and have and say in the things he does.

Lastly, these guys don’t even say I love you!! Leo tells Chai he really really likes him and Chai’s all like well I hope so because I have fallen in love with you. And Leo gets all happy and THATS IT!! He doesn’t say it back and it’s not said for the rest of the book. And instead of telling us about their life together 6 months later, instead we get a sex scene. So this is definitely a HFN.

NO CHEATING
NO OP DRAMA (Leo gets propositioned but nothing comes of it though his dick does twitch with interest but this is before him and Chai have anything going)
NO THIRD ACT BREAK UP
HFN

J.F. Miev is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

This book is SOOOOOO unserious and I fucking loved every delectable second of it. Having a mafia romance book with a double bi-awakening between two himbo-but-badass, kinky cinnamon roll MCs is the delicious chocolate cake that that I was craving and it's (YUM) frosted with the sweetest, whippiest lightheartedness.

Really, this book was just so much fun. I AM OBSESSED WITH LEO - THAT ADORABLE ASS MOTHERFUCKER WHO COULD ALSO IMPRESSIVELY BEAT THE SHIT OUTTA ANYONE. His character is just a riot of color and his golden retriever energy paired with Chai's wickedly-sexy-black-panther-but-is-really-just-a-cuddly-house-cat WAS SO STINKIN' ADORABLEEEEE.

Literally, this is Chai when he's on mafia duty:

This is Chai when Leo is around:

And this is Leo 24/7:

But if the adorableness is impressive, THE HEATTTTTTT IS-

Even just reading these two FANTASIZING about each other was getting me all hot and bothered, GOOD LORD. And then we add the fact that both of these men are just immediately unbothered at how gay they are for each other and how they're so unapologetically eager to explore their interests and kinks??

Not to mention the banter and humor! It was so much fun and sweet without being cheesy and once you get past the "climax" (of the background plot cause Leo & Chai had more than one climax, rest assured *wink wink*), it just gets even more silly and ridiculous from there. It was really refreshing to read a book that has traditionally darker themes that isn't dark at all - it's a ray of fucking sunshine and I'm happy to bask in it any day.

ALSOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Just gonna leave that there.....iykyk and if you DON'T know, go fucking find out if you wanna laugh your ass off.

This was so good. I was smiling and laughing the entire book.
The chaotic duo that they are, I can't.
Leo was such a sweetness, I loved him. The way he embraced the yakuza thing was something.
And Chai, not being able to resist him.
They were so hot and sweet.
I need the rest of the books in these series like air. Can't wait for Aran and Hex and I need Chai's dad, Daichi, to have a book too, the hello kitty thing was too good to not be anything

Who said Mobsters were scary? is the J.F. Miev´s novel. It´s a new author to me, then I will comment not only on the book but also on the style, the writing, the way it develops characters...

The style is fluid, between the dialogues and the spicy scenes the rhythm of the novel is maintained. The dialogues are funny, the two main characters are two adorable himbos. There is a double bi awakening very well handled and I laughed a lot with a particular scene, near the end, because it's funny to see a yakuza in his old age (it is nothing demeaning to the character, just that he has particular tastes).

Leo has gotten into a last minute program to study abroad, specifically Japan, because he has a series of problems with certain dangerous individuals and can only run away.

One night he saves Chai from getting beaten up by some thugs. Chai is the son of a yakuza who ends up offering him a job as a bodyguard.

I hope the series continues because I have seen a possible couple and I would like the author to continue exploring the world.

This wasn't fun. It wasn't dark, but I didn't get himbo romance at all. The fantasies/dreams were awkward. I did like the whole standing up to the future father-in-law thing. The best bit was the fight arena, but other than that it was either a slow struggle or a quick skim. Another one off the TBR.

* Insta hot attraction * Dual Bi-awakening * Running away from problems * Unlocked kinky behavior lol * Pew-pew fights & a good amount of beat downs * Trials and survival * Who is the villain?

Enter into the world as gaijin (Japanese phrase for foreigner) Leo. Running from his past and problems the last very thing he expects to do is save a Yakuza heir. Not only that but also be hotly pursued by his as well for more then bodyguard duty.
Chai is instantly infatuated with the foreigner and knows he needs Leo to agree to be his bodyguard. Which at least keeps him close.
Between trials to enter into the Yakuza and learning to protect the heir, Leo is as non serious as you could imagine. He brings out a side of Chai that really made my heart happy.
Their dual bi awakening is hot, heavy and eventually gets a bit kinky.
Their relationship develops fast but their problems develop even faster.
During the entire book you question who in the yakuza organization is trying to bring down the group. As you pick up on signs throughout the book there are a few unexpected details and truths that come forth that can make or break this new couple.
Overall, this book had great build up, great spice ;), great organizational trouble and resolution and world building was good.
If you want to give mafia romance a try and don't want it to be too heavy or dark this is a great book to start with honestly.

Who Said Mobsters Were Scary? is the first book in the Mobster Mayhem series. This is Leo and Chais story. I had so much fun with this book. These two are just perfect for each other. This is a double himbo bi awakening story. Even though the book is set in the mafia it isn't a dark story. I love the fun and steam J.F. Miev put into the book. I love the writing style and the dialogue between the characters. I really appreciated the side characters also. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book.

5⭐️ 3🌶️
MOOD: adventurous, funny, mysterious
TROPES: forbidden romance, bi-awakening
GENRES: contemporary romance, mafia, lgbtq+
FAV QUOTE: Besides, Leo isn't even her type or gender preference. He wasn't your either, but did that stop you? Touche.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Leon "Leo" Caruso and Kwanchai "Chai" Agkiyama

THE GOOD: First off, I really enjoyed a mafia setting that wasn't a dark romance - I didn't think I would but that was one of the high points of this book. There is still violence and crime, cause mafia, but it was a nice change of pace to not have one, or both, of the main characters suffer because of their relation to the mafia. Leo and Chai are adorable and amusing characters on their own and even more so together. Both their relationship arc and the overall narrative is highly addicting making this a quick but fulfilling read. This was my first J.F. Miev book and I would definitely pick up another one.
THE NEUTRAL: I know there needed to be a mechanism to get Leo to Japan but he's never in school :D so exchange student felt like an odd choice. I also had to look up 4649 in reference to the license plate in chapter 3 cause I don't know Japanese humor.
THE MEH: Was the cemetery haunted? That's been bugging me.

CW: violence, mentions of homophobia, mentions of religious trauma, mentions of parental death
DISCLAIMER: I received an advance review copy. This is my honest review.

In this intriguing new novel, readers are taken on a journey through the streets of Nagoya, where danger and desire intermingle in the lives of two captivating characters.

Leo, an American seeking a fresh start, finds himself entwined with Chai, a self-centered mafia heir with a penchant for control. The premise promises a blend of suspense, romance, and personal growth, and it delivers on several fronts.

Leo's character is relatable in his quest for a new beginning, but his encounter with Chai complicates his plans. Despite Leo's initial reluctance, Chai's undeniable charm and persistence make it difficult for him to resist the job offer as a bodyguard. The tension between duty and desire is palpable, making their interactions both thrilling and emotionally charged. Leo’s inner conflict about his attraction to Chai adds a layer of complexity to his character, making him more than just a man on the run from his past.

Chai, on the other hand, is a fascinating enigma. His self-centered nature and mafia connections make him a formidable figure, yet his vulnerability and unexpected attraction to Leo add depth to his persona. The dynamic between the two men is electric, with Chai's need for control clashing with Leo's desire for independence. The way their relationship evolves from suspicion to undeniable attraction is both believable and compelling.

Despite these concerns, the book offers a captivating tale of love and redemption. Leo and Chai’s story is one of unexpected connections and the power of love to change even the most guarded hearts. It's a thrilling ride that will keep readers hooked from start to finish, rooting for the unlikely pair to find their happily ever after.

The romance between Leo and Chai is intense and passionate, driven by a mix of lust, curiosity, and genuine connection. Their journey is not just about physical attraction but also about understanding and accepting each other's flaws and strengths. The narrative explores themes of identity, trust, and the courage to embrace one’s true self, making it a thought-provoking read.

However, the story isn't without its flaws. Some might find the progression of Leo and Chai's relationship a bit rushed, especially given the initial animosity. Additionally, the portrayal of Chai as a mafia heir might not sit well with all readers, as it could be seen as romanticising problematic behaviour.

Overall, this novel is a compelling mix of action, romance, and character development. It's a must-read for fans of intense, unconventional love stories set against a backdrop of danger and intrigue.
The setting of Nagoya adds an exotic backdrop to the narrative, with its bustling streets and hidden alleys providing the perfect stage for the unfolding drama. The author does an excellent job of creating a vivid sense of place, enhancing the story’s atmosphere and immersing readers in the characters' world.

A Romantic Exchange

Who Said Mobsters Were Scary?
Mobster Mayhem 1
Aria Clark J.F. Miev
This cross culture gay mafia romance sees USA Student Leon in a violent meet-cute helping to save Yakuza 'damsel' Kwanchai who has been ambushed by a rival gang outside a nightclub.
Leo has to get out of dodge - aka the USA - quickly, after his ex Cindy embroils him in some gang drama leaving him with a debt to the mafia after dumping a dangerous product.
Luckily he's a bright spark and manages to get a space on a student exchange programme for a year to Japan so flees the country.
It isn't long before he's making new friends at uni and they're heading out for drinks at a nightclub.
Kwanchai Akiyama - Chai - is convinced that the hits on his family warehouses and the leaks about their business dealings mean there's a mole in their family.
He's definitely convinced when he's attacked outside a nightclub by a number of rivals when no one but the Akiyama family should know where he is.
This is where Leo dives in, no questions asked, to join the fight on Chai's side. He's a known MMA fighter after all and can stand his own.
After the fight, Chai's very impressed and tries to convince Leo to be his new bodyguard. Especially as Aran, his previous guard has stepped up to head of security and can't do both jobs.
The more Leo refuses, the more persuasive Chai gets, and as the two interact there's a definite spark and some D/s vibes. Chai is definitely the one in charge here, and it's clear that they are fascinated by each other. It isn't until a particularly sultry nightclub dance, that we get our double bi-awakening.
In my head, I'm imagining actors such as Song Kang and Jung Jinyoung as Chai. He's sexy, suave, cute but also forceful and strong. Very assertive though only to a point as he can't disrespect the head of the family. Leo meanwhile is a cheeky brat but equally smart taking to his bodyguard duties like a duck to water, though his etiquette isn't quite on point. He's actually sort of adorkable.
The various secondary characters are great fun too. I didn't like Goro, the sleazy underling the moment I saw him, or rather, read his actions, whereas Aran is firm but fair. As for Naomi, Leo's uni friend, she's talented, funny and sharp. She's desperate to escape an arranged marriage with a guy back home as she loves her girlfriend.
The final character we meet briefly, but he really stood out. I love Sudo Hex - aka Hex - the hacker who we meet near the end, especially the way he makes Aran flustered.
There's some very funny scenes especially with Daichi the Dad near the conclusion that made me laugh out loud, plus there's plenty of spice, action, intrigue, danger and dancing.
A decent first book of a series I plan to read more of.

I've been looking on BookSirens for a while, but nothing really jumped out at me. Until today. F.J Miev's "Who Said Mobsters Were Scary?" had me hooked.

I kinda loved how this book wasn't dark. I mean, I LOVE me a dark romance (and even more so a dark mafia romance), but this one was a pleasant surprise (and a welcomed relief). I mean, who doesn't love a double himbo idiots-to-lovers romance. It had all of the green flags, cinnamon roll vibes, supportive friends, and fluff to the extreme (and don't forget about the steam).

Okay, so there were a feeeew red flags. I mean, they were obsessed with each other for a bit, and there was some mutual stalking. Plus the whole mafia thing (and a mole in the mafia). And the whole reason Leo was in Japan to begin with. BUT it wasn't anything dark.

And just because it wasn't dark and filled with red flags, it doesn't mean that the spice wasn't high. And far more spicy than two previously straight dudes should be capable of. NOT that I'm complaining. What. So. Ever. Good for them, actually.

This is just silly. Leo, young dude in trouble, goes to Japan as an exchange student to get away. After helping out in a fight, he is almost immediately hired as the personal bodyguard of Chai, the heir of a huge criminal enterprise. Leo is good at Muay Thai (aka Thai boxing) but speaks no Japanese, has no security experience, and has never fired a gun. And still Chai insists that Leo takes the job, luring him with a ginormous amount of money and perks and protection against the baddies from back home.

So, here my suspension of disbelief is already straining. We're usually good friends, and I really want to get to the good stuff, because this is supposed to be a delightful romcom with no mention of white savior syndrome at all, and the reviews are great. This'll be great.

Straight guys Leo and Chai have been surprisingly hot for each other since the beginning, thinking naughty thoughts and feeling their dicks twitch when they grind together at a nightclub. Both make a quick and non-conflicted mental switch to "okay, I guess I like guys now," and start eyefucking and thigh-groping while out on official business.

Then Leo has to fight two brutes to prove himself to the big boss, wins, and Chai takes him to a hotel room to look at his injuries (no need to go to the on-site doctor, pfft). Despite a split lip and having been beaten to a pulp just before, the two guys jump and snog each other like wild beasts, and do a lot of gay sex with twitching holes and cleft-rubbing and frotting and panting and dirty talking. And then they do it again. In other words, the classic awkward first man/man experience, totally. Then they cuddle and sleep the rest of the night, with no mention of the big boss/dad and the chief of security still being in the building. No chance of getting caught here, nu-uh.

Next morning they take a train to the airport, and dangerous Chai with the menacing aura cuddles up to Leo in full view of the other passengers. Here the aforementioned suspension of disbelief finally went ping, and I decided that these two clueless, careless dudes were more trouble than they were worth. Bye, Leo and Chai. I hope you find out who the mole is.

1st person, present tense, dual PoV (though more from Leo's perspective, especially early on)
Leon Caruso (21), Business and Sport major at the City College in New York/exchange student at IS University of Nagoya
Kwanchai Akiyama (24), son (and heir) of the leader of the Akiyama Group, a yakuza organization

I received an ARC of the third book, not realizing that it was part of a series and should be read in order so here I am. I'm so behind in my ARC reviews so this is going to be point form... but the TLDR gist is that it was an entertaining story with cute MCs and a plot with potential that it fell short of.
- I really struggled with the writing; it doesn't flow naturally, there are unusually word choices peppered throughout and strange syntax that kept taking me out of the story, especially as it's written in the present tense, which I dislike as a general rule unless it is done well.
- The set-up was soooo slooooooow. Get to the point. I am well past college-aged so this was a real drag for me, especially since I wasn't expecting it from the synopsis.
- Those dream/fantasy sequences are hella awkward.
- This is very insta-, nothing really compelling to engage to reader and root for them as a couple. Thank goodness I like both characters and am enjoying them together because otherwise I'd probably DNF this. The bi-awakening is in name only, not much introspection takes place, and these two dove right into advanced bedroom activities without much lead-up.
- The story is pretty much all vibes with an aimless, uninteresting plot. I'm not sure how you make a mobster dull, but this author has managed it. I don't mind chaotic, unhinged or farfetched, but I do need to be able to follow some dots.
- Oh, okay, here we go. Loving the possible paranormal element (that ultimately goes nowhere).
- A little underground fight club is fun.
- I do hate the plot device of teasing the reader with some nebulous past of an MC and not really explaining what happened and/or giving conflicting information about the events. I assure you .
- I'm a sucker for MCs working together to solve a task or problem so having Leo team up with Chai to prove there was a mole in their organization was super fun for me, until it all fell together without any read investigating or work from either of them. So anticlimactic.
- Hello Kitty!
- This romance stands alone, though there is an overarching plot that doesn't feel fully resolved.
- Oh, how I hate these newsletter sign-ups to get bonus content that really should be included in the book. In this one we see what happened when Chai's father told the rest of the group that Chai and Leo were in a relationship.

2.5/5 stars! Got this for free in a 'Stuff your Kindle' event! The premise sounded funny so I got it, not entirely sure if it would have been enough to convince me to buy it though, I'm not gonna lie.

I'll start with the positives. Like I said, the premise is good, it's funny. Leo is also quite likable and you really root for him to get out of the mess he's found himself in. The mafia plotline with the potential mole was also well set-up and it made me very curious how that would pan out.

Now where did this story let me down a bit... with the lack of depth. Both Leo and Chai stayed quite surface level, we never got into deeper emotions with them nor did we get much background. To the point where I was genuinely wondering what exactly it was between them (besides being sexually attracted to each other). We don't know much about them at all and it makes it hard to believe the love story. I also feel like Leo accepted the mafia stuff way too easily, especially considering the mess he fled from in the US.

Like I mentioned, I was actually curious how the mystery would be resolved. But there we went from barely any clues to full-on being shown what was going on. It also wasn't a *gasp* reveal either, it was the obvious resolution, which was kinda boring.

Speaking of boring... the side characters also aren't all that. We get some people in the beginning, when Leo is being a student and everything, and then we kind of abandon all of that in favour of the bodyguard job and with that, we lose all the side characters. It becomes the Leo and Chai have sex show, with some action sprinkled in.

Overall, this is definitely not a bad book. It's low-angst and if you're looking for two dumbos who fall for each other at first fight (not a typo) and proceed to put themselves in dangerous situations, this might be the book for you. For me, it was a bit bland and I wasn't emotionally invested enough.

This book is so worth the reading. It is different from your normal mafia stories but the author makes it into a whole new world of mafia. Such an amazing story to read.

Leo did some things he is not proud of because his ex-girlfriend talked him into it. When he wants out and sees what happens when people ask to leave, he decides to escape the US and take a chance to a country where he doesn't think he can be found. He is an exchange student in Japan. He is just going to keep his head down and finish the exchange program. He doesn't intend to help rescue a man he sees getting jumped nor does he intend to be his bodyguard. However Leo can't pass up the job when he is made a really good offer.

Chai is the heir when his father steps down. He is ready to take his place once his father steps down. He needs a new bodyguard and has been having a hard time finding one. One night, his enemies know where he is at and he can't take all of the men at once so he runs. He doesn't expect to have help when he ends up in one spot but he is thankful for the help. He now must find the guy that rescued him. He always gets what he wants. He starts to stalk Leo and when the right moment comes, he explains and makes sure Leo knows that he doesn't want anyone else but him as his bodyguard.

Leo & Chai had me laughing with the way they both talked to each other but also the fun that they had. These two have a really good connection that you can feel and it's a more first time for both of them but they don't turn it down. They work well together and they also learn so much about each other. They both protect each other and Leo helps Chai uncover the mole in the organization.

Such a great read and hope to see another book come out about these two. I also look forward to more books in this series.

I received an ARC from GRR and this is my honest review.

I've read thousands of books, and by this time in my life I feel like I know what to expect when I open a new one. I make advanced assumptions for how I think a book will go. And this isn't to say I am tired of reading or anything. I just do it without thought.

So with that said I went into this book expecting a little angst and a fast romance with a good mafia based plot. What I got was a visceral push and pull between two characters as Chai tries to convince Leo to be his bodyguard. The fact that Leo didn't immediately jump at this opportunity was one of the first things that hooked me with this book. The second was the fire between these two supposedly straight characters. This is a favorite trope of mine and this was wholly unexpected. I was hooked.

The heat as these two figure it out was epic. I'm talking about needing a drink of ice water to cool off kind of heat. It was extremely sexy and the 'dance' between them was just perfect. The story was sensational and kept me glued to the pages. Mafia has always been one of my favorite tropes. I didn't want to put it down. Work became a burden because I couldn't find out what was in store for me next. This new to me author had me in a spell I didn't want to break out of.

This book was so much more than I thought I was getting and I would recommend it to ANYONE, but especially those who Love mafia romance, love straight to gay romance, love the bodyguard trope, and love a well written story. Pick it up and give it a read. I would love to chat about it!

If you are looking to add this to your TBR and came to the comments to make the final decision, let me help; just read it. This was the a very very refreshing read that came at the perfect time for me! Right in the middle of the dark romance reads that have been consuming my Kindle this beauty appeared and gave me the break I didn't know I needed.

Mafia romances have never really been my jam. This is a real treasure, though. I appreciate any novel that makes me laugh and boy howdy did I laugh. Plain and simple, this was a very fun read. It really is a case of two himbos finding each other. Leo and Chai are made for each other and are just adorably loveable in their own unique ways.

Set in Japan, our author weaves together a tale of Leo, a college student who needs a new start in life. Leaving behind all he knew, some might say running away if you will, he embarks on an adventure abroad. Like any good foreign exchange student, one night, he goes to check out the nightlife only to accidentally save the life of Chai. Will fate bring these two together in a way that lets them find themselves, or will their pasts haunt them?

The supporting cast of characters is top-notch. Choosing to have our setting in Japan is a choice I really appreciate. Very rarely do you see this in romance novels.

If you are looking for a quick read full of laughs, romance, the mafia, and a healthy dose of spice, this is the book for you!

This was such a fun read! Definitely one you can just park your brain into neutral and enjoy a little bit of escapism 😍

I did find the first 25% to be a bit slow, and I understand that we needed to see the characters and the world develop but it definitely felt like it dragged on a bit...after the first quarter though it picks up so well and I could not put this book down!
This was so different from any other mafia book I've read and it was so refreshing to see a more playful story told.

I was however very confused by the whole father/mafia head finding out about his sons boyfriend... *this contains spoilers*
This feared, basement arena fight club, mafia head accepting Chai and Leo just because he is blackmailed by hello kitty??
It turned an already fun and unserious book into something a little bit ridiculous but maybe the author intended it to be? Regardless I'm glad Leo and Chai get their happy ending, I just wanted more of a fight for them to get it.

I was also expecting this to be a lot more spicy with the lead ups and bantering between our two MC's, its like every opportunity they were riling each other up but we only get like 2 proper scenes with them together. This is honestly personal preference but I definitely wanted more of them.

Cannot wait to read the following books and I do hope to see Aran and Hex's story, as well as Naomi getting her own HEA!

Well, this is my first mafia romance, and I know it isn't representative of the genre, but it was a chaotic ride!

Leo is in Japan to hide from his past with a shady American organization his ex girlfriend got him into. One night out at the club with his fellow exchange students, he goes to get some air and interrupts a six on one battle. That one? Chai, the heir to a yakuza organization. And he is intrigued by his accidental savior/assist (because Chai totally had it handled, thank you very much). He makes Leo an offer for a job as a bodyguard that Leo can't refuse, and they're off on a chaotic adventure involving first times (with a man), a possible mole, and a big job that may have more to it than anyone anticipated.

I'm not really a mafia romance person because they go a little dark for me. If you're a similar person, this one could work for you. Leo and Chai are adorable disaster gremlins, and Chai's family organization refuses to get into the darker side of organized crime. The sexy times were pretty spicy and hot, especially for two men who hadn't been with a man before.

There were a few parts where I think editing got a little abrupt and cut something out that is mentioned later, and parts of the story didn't quite work for me, but overall this was an intriguing series starter and I am kinda curious where the story goes next!

CW: sexual content, fighting, injuries, death (minor baddies only), mentions of drug dealing

A Mafia and bi-awakening MM romance set in Japan. Leo is an American that has let his ex-girlfriend get him into some illegal activities with potentially deadly consequences for him and others. After failing to complete his last task, he is hiding in Japan as an exchange student and trying to figure out his next move once his year is up in the program. Chai is the heir to the Akiyama Group in Japan and has been trying to prove to his father that he is ready to take over and that they have a mole in the organization. When Leo saves Chai in an alleyway fight, these two will begin a journey of discovery and maybe help each other out too. Can they figure out their new feelings for each other or will the past come back to destroy them both?
This was a new author for me and a relatively new foray into Mafia books as I don’t tend to read them, but I was curious about the MM aspect and the setting. I enjoyed both Leo and Chai and the other characters (Naomi, Chris, Aran, Hex) that made for a well-rounded story. The chemistry between the MC’s was playful at times and smoking at others. I loved the Japanese background and culture as not many stories are set there and makes me want to go and visit. Also, really hoping that Aran will get his own story with Hex? Overall, a great read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

- MM Romance
- Mafia romcom
- Double bi-awakening
- Idiots to lovers
- Dual POV
- Silly & funny
- No third act breakup

3.75 rounded up

"Is it a massive gray area dating your boss? Hell yeah, but gray just so happens to be my favorite color."

This was my first book by this author and I liked the writing style.
It was a fun and lighthearted read but the spice was hottt 🔥 The start was a bit slow. The author takes the time with the setting and character development but it was still an easy story to get into.

Leo and Chai had chemistry and there was no angst between them, which was appreciated. There was also a good action plot that kept me intrigued all the way.
It's dual POV and we get to follow both Leo and Chai.

Leo has left the US for a fresh start. The last thing he needs is a self-centered mafia heir with stalker tendencies who's offering him a job and won't take no for an answer.

Chai needs a new bodyguard. After an ambush in which Leo saves him, he decides that Leo is the one he wants for the job. Leo is reckless, a little wild and his pretty blue eyes are impossible to forget.
After all, even straight guys can find other men hot when it’s been a while, right?

Reading this was a crazy fun time! It’s a perfect escapism read, a good excuse to leave logic at the door and just enjoy the ride. The two main characters are lovable if sometimes a bit dim. Chai and Leo’s story is just right mix of sweet and steamy, with a little mystery and murder thrown into the mix to keep it interesting. Mobster rom-com isn’t something I’ve read before, but it a perfect description of Leo and Chai’s story. The author doesn’t take the mobster side too seriously, keeping this a fun light read. I really enjoyed the Japanese setting which added interest to the story. The side characters are also well done, with the possible exception of Naomi, who was kind of annoying from the moment she showed up. I especially loved Chai’s relationship with his best friend and Chief of Security - Aran; their friendship feels quite real and helps ground the wackiness of the plot. This was a well rounded romance- great characters, an engaging plot, a steamy double bi-awakening, and a satisfying HEA. I hope to read more set in this world!

I had a blast reading this! That's right; it's the ideal book to read if you want to escape from reality for a while. The two protagonists are endearing, albeit they might be a little stupid at times. A touch of intrigue and murder add spice to Chai and Leo's romance, which is already lovely and sensual. Although I've never read a mobster rom-com before, it sums up Leo and Chai's story beautifully. The author maintains a lighthearted tone by not taking the gangster aspect too seriously. I thought the narrative was more interesting because it took place in Japan. With the possible exception of Naomi, who was somewhat bothersome from the get-go, the supporting characters are likewise superbly portrayed. The bond between Chai and Aran, his chief of security and best friend, is wonderful; it gives the story some reality and balances out the crazy plot. A satisfying HEA, interesting characters, a passionate double bi-awakening, and a compelling plot all contributed to this well-rounded romance. More stories set in this universe would be great.I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

This is the first story I’ve read by this author. I enjoy mafia stories and was pleasantly surprised this isn’t the run of the mill story.
Leo is forced to leave the U.S. because of some illegal activities he was involved in due to a girlfriend. He just wants to find somewhere he can live safely and in peace. He gets a chance to be a student in Japan and after he actually makes it there he just wants to settle into the student lifestyle. He makes a few friends and when out one night sees something going on that he just can’t stand back and not get involved.
Chai is the son of a yakuza. One night he gets into a situation he can’t easily get out of but a stranger steps in and helps him. He can’t get Leo out of his mind. He has been looking for a bodyguard and is bound and determined Leo will fill that spot.
This story flows so smoothly. The mystery part plays out so well that I hated to set the book down until the end.
I’m glad the blurb grabbed my attention so I now have another author to watch.

If you're looking for a mafia romance with a rom-com twist you have definitely found it. Chai and Leo very definitely idiots to lovers personified. Leo could not keep himself out of trouble even if he tried, he's too curious and could be too much of a brat. They were cute together and I really enjoyed the himbo-ness they both exhibited.

I loved how intrigued about each other they both were after meeting, how obsessed Chai was from the start and how possessive Leo was. I loved how they both felt calmer and safer when they were together.

I really enjoyed their fantasies and how open they were to try out new things with each other. I really enjoyed how their bi-awakening was handled.

I giggled out loud a couple of times, which is always a good thing.

We get more mafia happenings in the last 25% which was interesting to see, even if maybe the ending felt a tiny bit rushed.

I really liked seeing them in the epilogue, to see what they were doing 6 months down the line.
Is Hex and Aran's story next? Because the glimpse we got of them was very intriguing.

I'm personally not a fan of the first person POV in combination with present tense. I did not expect to encounter it here, so it was a bit of an unpleasant surprise to me. BUT... the premise still sounded interesting, so I decided to give it a try anyway.
In the first few chapters, I still had trouble with the author's style choices. Thankfully, though, the story was fast-paced and had its fair share of humor, helping me ignore the "thing" well enough to keep reading.

I'd have given the book a 3.5 star rating if it were possible, but I went with 4 because it managed to make me laugh often enough that choosing 3 stars would have felt wrong to me.

I am considering to get the follow-up book (#3 of the series) at some point, too, because I got a glimpse of its protagonists in this one and now I'm curious about how their story will go. But I don't think I'll check out the other works of the author (since they'll probably be written in the same style), in favor of finding more third-person POV books for me to enjoy. 😉
