You've probably heard of dogs in space. Maybe even chimpanzees. But jellyfish? Almost certainly not!
Join Dr Sheila Kanani in this special World Book Day adventure, as she discovers a weird and wonderful cast of animals who have travelled into space, from Ham the chimpanzee to Félicette the cat, and the 60,000 jellyfish who have orbited the Earth (did you know you can also get jellyfish-shaped galaxies?). You'll meet the microscopic creatures that can survive in the vacuum of space, and wonder – could aliens really exist?
This fantastical journey into the wild and surprising realms of space weaves together astronomy, physics and biology, and is sure to inspire space-obsessed and animal-loving kids everywhere.
Are you curious what animals went into space? Then this World Book Day book will be perfect for you!
FINALLY I was able to read this one! I pre-ordered this one when I spotted it, but sadly this was the only World Book Day book that didn’t work out. Thankfully, after a few months (so around July) I suddenly spied it back up on Amazon and of course I had to buy it. This time it did make it to my home!
In this really fun book we learn all about various animals that went up in space, such as the titular jellyfish. Because yes, those went up in space in a special way! I loved reading about all the various animals, like Ham the chimpanzee, or of course Laika the most famous of all. But we also read about moths, mice, and many others, so many animals went up in space. Quite a few I didn’t even know about, so I was definitely excited to learn more about them and get to know them. I am glad that these days animal welfare is much better, back then anything got sent into space, or underwent heavy training.
The addition of adding galaxies with the same name/shape as the animals mentioned in the section was a fun addition. I knew there were many galaxies but that they even had fun names or referenced to animals, no. I should really read more about space, but a lot of it is so dry, haha, can someone bring out a fun book about all sorts of galaxies in space? Or is there already one? Recommend it to me!
I also love that at the end we get some information about humans in space and see what accomplishments they have done and how sending animals has helped humans go into space.
The illustrations were cute and I just love the style of them~
All in all, recommended to all interested in space and then specifically what got sent up there to the stars~
Can You Get Jellyfish in Space? is a World Book Day 2024 book. Spoiler, the answer is , but that is not the end of the book. “You’ll find out what happened to over 2,000 moon jellyfish that went into space in the 1990s!” But you’ll also get to “meet [all] the incredible animals that have travelled to space, from tiny fruit flies to fearless cats, mighty mice, speedy tortoises and , yes, even jellyfish.” There are fascinating and interesting facts in here. For example, “did you know that large animals grow even BIGGER when they’re in space” and “by the time Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space, in April 1961, there had been forty-eight dogs in space.” Of these dogs of course Laika gets a mention, but no mention of Gromit 🤔. These facts and info are spread across imaginatively named chapters like “Of mice and microgravity” and “A giant leap for tortoise-kind” and are presented in bitesize chunks so that the book can be read in pieces or out of order.
The text is accompanied by pictures although some of these pictures of nebulas or galaxies don’t come out too well in black and white. But overall very interesting and being a WBD book it represents excellent value for money (costing just £1 or a WBD book token) so 4-stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
(Paperback not Kindle) Interesting little book about the various creatures that have been sent in to space over the years, testing the "ground" before humans were sent up, also to see how being in zero gravity affects different creatures. I'd say suitable for age 8 (depending on your 8 yr old)-99+
