Legendary British artist SHAKY KANE (THE BULLETPROOF COFFIN) and writer JORDAN THOMAS (Frank At Home On The Farm) are your guides through the corrupt, seedy streets of Stellar City in their new MINISERIES! The hard-boiled noir of LA Confidential mixes with the bright, alien-filled worlds of Futurama in this crime epic. Following months of gang shootings, Detective Ovra Sawce is paired with a new partner on a triple homicide. But what were a billionaire’s assistant, a hood-turned-cult leader, and Sawce’s former partner doing in that warehouse?
Weird Work’s color and style pulled me in kicking and screaming at first sight. It's the classic down on his luck, hardboiled detective tale, but in a strange new world. It's cops and crooks fighting for power in an action-packed, alien bloodbath!
The art almost felt grotesque to me. The way the brightness and shapes moved on the page. It was hard for me to read to be honest. I think because the art was so loud. The images invoked physical reactions in me—like a smirk or grimace or my fingers curling into fists. I can't really explain any better than that. Fascinating for sure.
The words are what I truly loved here. Words like dastardly, “flurry of bullets”, and “FUCK-OH” all made appearances. The words often surprised me, which kept me reading.
Weird Work 1 hit stands on July 5 and I’m happy was lucky to get an arc from Image. Written by Jordan Thomas and drawn by Shaky Lane, the comic follows a murder mystery in the seedy world of Stellar City, a vibrant and strange alien city that has more mafiosos, corrupt cops and drug dealers than it has traffic jams—and it has plenty of those. After a brief prologue bringing readers up to speed on the criminal underground roster, the story kicks into gear with Detective Sawce being called in to solve a triple murder involving his own partner, a local gangster and the assistant of a prominent tech CEO. Now teamed up with a new partner named Trustah, who’s rumored to be on the take, the two must wade through the weeds of the criminal underground as well as the palaces of the billionaires to figure out what’s going on. This was a very fun noir story with vibes straight from a Raymond Chandler novel and art that is chock full of fun stuff to look at. If you like sci fi and you like mysteries, you’ll love this. Teens and up for this one.
