Sleeping Beauty is one of my favorite fairy tales, and to be honest, one of my favorite Disney movies. Maleficent is such a great villain, and Philip is a swoon-worthy hero. However, we don’t see much of Aurora and know little of her character. Not so in Melanie Karsak’s dark retelling. Aurora is smart and clever, interested in antiquities and research. She’s daring and a bit of a fashionista without even trying (perhaps it’s the fae blood). I loved her character! In fact, I loved everything about this book.
Don’t pick this up and expect Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, or even the Maleficent retelling. Parts of this book are light and humorous, while others are very dark, and others made me cry. This Sleeping Beauty takes place in Melanie Karsak’s steampunk London during the reign of Victoria. (Check out her Red Cape Society series—awesome!) There are airships and cool gizmos. The setting almost becomes a character.
Aurora and her twin brother, Aubrey, were cursed to fall into an eternal sleep on their 18th birthday. Their parents, endowed with magic, destroyed the mage who cursed the babies. Unfortunately, their parents died in the process, leaving Aurora and Aubrey to be raised by their three fae aunties. On the cusp of their 18th birthday, Aubrey sets off on a grand tour leaving Aurora at home, forced to endure the London season. However, this season is different because she meets Prince Albert. There’s an undercurrent of unrest and darkness amid their budding romance, and Aurora must fight to protect her family. Be prepared for mysteries, a ball, witty banter, vampires, the Unseelie, and threats from Queen Victoria.
I cannot wait for book 2! Thank you to Melanie Karsak for an ARC! All opinions are my own.
