The Immortals #1, 2 & 3

Eternal Love: The Immortal Witch Series

Rate this book
Raven is a witch from the 1690s who flees the hangman’s noose in England to find a haven in Massachusetts Bay where the witch hysteria is about to tear her and her lover apart.

Arianna’s beginnings were in the Scottish Highlands where her sister died to save her, and an immortal warrior loved her beyond reason and life itself.

Nidaba was a high priestess in the Temple of Inanna in ancient Sumer, until the king fell for her, and his queen hunted her down.

In the present day, these three women find each other and their lovers once more, but the dark ones who hunted them for their powerful hearts, hunt them still.

Both historical and contemporary, both paranormal and spiritual, this epic series is like none you’ve read before, or ever will.

I live in the teeny, tiny town of Taylor, NY, (Alliteration Alert!) though my mailing address is Cincinnatus, my telephone exchange is Truxton and I pay taxes and vote in Cuyler. All of these are at least in the same rural county in the southern hills of New York State; Cortland County. There are more cattle than people here. The nearest “big” cities are Syracuse and Binghamton and they are an hour away, in different directions, and not really all that big by most standards, though they both seem humongous to me. I look out my window to see rolling, green, thickly forested hills, wildflower laden meadows and wide open blue, blue skies. My road is barely paved. The nearest neighboring place is a 700 acre dairy farm.

My house is a big, century old farmhouse. I moved in here after my divorce in 2006. Just a little over a year later, the house, which I had named, SERENITY, burned. It was 99% gutted, and I lost my two dogs, Sally, an 11-year-old great Dane, and Wrinkles, my 14-year-old, blind bulldog. This was the culmination of my Dark Night of the soul, which had seemed to hit me all at once in 2006-2007. My mother died that year, after a 14 month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was only 60. The youngest of my five daughters had left home that same year, and while that’s not a tragedy at all, it felt like one to me. Then came the divorce. And finally there was the fire--it seemed my darkest night wasn’t quite finished with me after all. I had lost almost everything before that point, and as I poked through the wet ashes and soot the next day, I realized that I had now been stripped all the way to the bone.

No better time to start over. (And no, I didn’t come to that realization that day--there were a few days of wallowing in pity first, particularly the day after the fire, when I hit a deer and smashed up my car, which I was practically living in!)

That’s when I started to laugh. Just sat on the side of the road as the deer bounded, uninjured and carefree, out of sight, and laughed. It was just too ridiculous at that point, to do anything else!

And from there, I picked myself up, and brushed myself off, and said, okay, there’s only one way to go from here. Forward. And that’s what I did. There I was at the age of harrurmphemmph, living in my one, mostly undamaged remaining room, with a dorm-sized mini-fridge, a futon, a TV, my cat (nine lives!) and a laptop. And not much else. (Though thank goodness the room that survived the fire, was a room that had its own attached bathroom!)

Since then I have rebuilt my beloved home, which really has become my haven, my “Serenity.” I share it now with my fiancé, Lance, and we have accumulated quite the little family together. “Little” being a relative term. We have a pair of English Mastiffs, Dozer and Daisy, who weigh 203 pounds and 208 pounds respectively, and a little pudgy English Bulldog named Niblet, who is bigger than both of them, inside her mind. We also have the aforementioned cat, Glorificus (“Glory” for short,) who adores her canine pups and keeps them firmly in line. And we've acquired a pair of stray cats as well, a mother and son, Luna (Lulu for short) and Butters aka Buddy. Lulu showed up pregnant during a lunar eclipse, had a litter, and vanished again. We found homes for all the kittens except one. Butters. We got him fixed and kept him. A few months later, Lulu returned, again expecting. This litter was born on the "Monster Moon." Again, all the kittens were spayed and neutered and placed in homes, and this time we got Lulu to the vet in time to spay her before the cycle could repeat.

Glory is not amused.

She has a story of her own, my old Glory cat, having been with me before the Dark Times descended, she went through it all with me, moved with me, survived the fire, and remains with me still. She's tolerating the newcomers. Barely.

My partner is an artist, a mechanic, a welder and an inventor, and the rumors are true, he is much younger than I

A Great Series

Maggie Shayne writes great Witch stories, and this series is no different. The stories flow one into the next, flawlessly, with one theme holding, throughout. If you enjoy stories of magic, this series is a doozy! It’s one of my favorite rereads. I love this series and hope others will as well.

(Slight Spoiler)

I LOVE history, and I’ve ALWAYS been fascinated by Sumerian history and mythology, long before I started reading Ms. Shayne’s books about it. That’s why I LOVE her Vampire series, The Night Tales, my name for them, because it’s steeped in it! (Besides, who doesn’t LOVE Rhiannon?!?!). There are stories of Sumer in this series as well. So, if you like a little history with your magic and romance, this series is definitely worth reading!

Loved all three of these books about the Immortal High Witches. History, reincarnation, true love. What's not to love? The characters in all three novels are appealing and interesting. The conflict that happens comes out of the story naturally and isn't forced. I would have liked an epilogue on book 2 and 3, but that's because I really can't get enough of these characters or this world! I highly recommend these books if you're a fan of second chance romance, general witchery, and Scotland.

Eternal Love, Immortal Witches

This series is worth reading but the first book was slower and the characters were not as well defined. In the second and third books, the characters were more well rounded and made the reader feel like you knew them. I loved reading this series.

Great

I really liked these books. I wasn't for sure when I started reading them. I also loved how each book went into the lives of one from the previous book. I enjoyed them very much.

second read. the drama created by lack of honesty between the characters was somewhat irritating. Good read to pass time waiting for other books to drop

Eternity:
I reread this one while I was waiting for the new Laurell K. Hamilton book to come in. I clearly had it mixed up with at least one of the other books in the series, in my memory, but I enjoyed it as much the second time around as I did the first. I'll have to reread the rest of the Immortal Witches trilogy, now, too.
Raven St. James is a witch, and the book opens with both her and her mother's execution for witchcraft, and it follows Raven's story after that. I found her to be wholly sympathetic. The good guys are obviously good, and the bad guys are irredeemably bad; enough so that I grew a bit impatient with those on the fence. The old argument of attraction being the responsibility of the attractor rather than the attractee seemed so glaringly obvious that, again, I grew impatient with the character wrestling with his thoughts and beliefs on the subject.
It's an altogether enjoyable romance, though, strewn with Wiccan beliefs and magic.

Infinity:
Arianna's story is no less heart-wrenching than Raven's. Arianna has lived for hundreds of years, knowing that her husband is dead, but events in Eternity may have changed that basic fact.
I enjoyed learning about Nicodemus and Arianna's history, going back and forth between past and present. It was a bit disconcerting that the story is written in Nic's first-person voice, while everything else is third-person, especially in the present, when it's mostly Arianna's story.
I did remember a lot of this story from the first time I read it, though details were confused. It was worth the second read.

Destiny:
Nidaba is an immortal high witch, and former priestess in ancient Sumeria. Natum was her lover and her king, though now he lies under the radar, so as not to be hunted by the Dark Witches. As he discovers her in and rescues her from an insane asylum, and helps her to recover, we witness both their present and their past, and how they came to this point.
I enjoyed this book, though I'm not sure if I liked it quite as much as as the first two books in the Immortal Witches trilogy. There were some definitely disturbing parts, and not all from the Dark Witch. Natum, though innocent of that of which Nidaba suspects him, does a terrible thing in the course of Nidaba's recovery. That said, I defintely felt the love, heartache, and desire between Natum and Nidaba, and felt frustration at their thwarted love over the centuries.

Eternal Love: The Immortal Witch Series box set written by the beloved, Maggie Shayne, magically transports the reader across centuries, experiencing loves that burn bright and never extinguish. They are stories of hope: loves found, lost, only to be found again. Ms. Shayne makes you laugh, cry, and hope for a day when being different will be more widely accepted.
Each story begins in a different century, or in Destiny’s case, millennium: Eternity begins in the late 1600’s when many people were scared of witchery; Infinity is set in the 1500’s Scotland; and Destiny (which took Ms. Shayne a great deal of research) was set mostly in ancient Sumer. With each new era, Ms. Shayne provides such wonderful imagery and an indefinite number of details that it sucks the reader into that world with beautiful clarity. She never provides too much detail that it takes away from the story. The stories transition well from past to present, and vice versa. She never leaves the reader feeling confused.
No character is the same, each is unique with their own special powers: Raven heals; Arianna is a warrior and can conjure with ease; Nidaba an ancient priestess for the Sumerian Goddess Innana (or possibly a reincarnation of the Goddess herself?). All the characters have their own little nuances that set them apart. Each book in this series introduces characters from the previous ones, because each has a small role each other’s story.
Ms. Shayne gives these witches practical magic, much like the Wicca she practices. She humanizes them; she reminds the reader that they were once human, much like she did with the vampires in her Wings of the Night series.
Something can be found in each one of Maggie Shayne’s books. But, you have to find out for yourself what that might be. I highly recommend any book written by Maggie Shayne. I have never read one that I did not love; and I would never recommend a book that I didn't. Each one of her books is pure magic.

Treat yourself to a wonderful, magical journey !
In 1689 England, Raven St-James, an immortal witch flees to the New World because she did not die when she was hanged for practicing sorcery. And thus begins Eternity, book one of the wonderful Immortal Witches series. You can read the blurbs as well as I can, so I will not waste time rehashing the plots and goings-on, although they are truly compelling. Do you remember when you were a child and your caretaker started a new book of fairy tales, do you remember the anticipation, the wonder, the excitement as you settled down and waited to be taken on a voyage to the unknown? This is how Ms. Shayne’s books feel. She possesses impressive writing skills, her prose is clear, clean, crisp and yet lush and evocative. She has the ability to convey myriad details, all carefully documented, without ever slowing down the pace of the story. The books have a very Gothic feel, which pleased me immensely. She weaves an atmosphere that sucks you in the characters’ world, regardless of the surroundings, eras, and continents. The characters are multi-faceted and complex, the world-building goes beyond what is usually associated with witches, and especially in the case of Destiny, an extraordinary amount of research has been done by the author. These are not just stories where witchcraft is incidental, and yet you don’t have to be a hardcore paranormal fan to enjoy these books. If you like well-crafted story-telling, interesting and likeable characters, and above all, an author who is an absolute master of the English language, this box set is for you

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION’s Pack Alpha – Chelle:

Here’s my quick and dirty combo review for the set. ☺

ETERNITY:
I am breathlessly wowed!
I have read A LOT of Maggie Shayne books and have loved every single one, so hearing Maggie say that Eternity was "the single best novel I have ever written" both did and did not surprise me.
After finishing the book though, I can sort of see where she's coming from...
Wings in the Night will always hold a very special place in my heart, and I stand my assessment that The Portal series is epic. This book, however, is truly something special and will be one I will read way more than once. I can't wait to continue the Immortal Witches story with Infinity and am thrilled that I finally sat down to enjoy this work of art!

INFINITY:
Another amazing emotional and thrilling read by the talented Maggie Shayne! The story flows fast and strong and ferries along a complicated tale with a very satisfying ending. Very good indeed.

DESTINY:
Wonderful. Takes care of a lot of the series’ past questions that characters that we’ve all been wondering about, brings true love to a beautiful culmination and then leaves us wanting more. This one has a lot of historical detail of an ancient civilization and some readers may not enjoy all of it. I found it fascinating!

OVERALL:
An absolutely amazing series and I can’t wait for more. I know there is a fourth book out there somewhere and I’m hunting it down immediately. Highly recommended!

This was three titles, in one series. Let me start off by saying Maggie Shayne has been a favorite of mine for quite some time, I got this series at an excellent price, and was NOT disappointed.

Book 1: Raven is a young teen still very child like in the ways of the world, it's a coming of age meets, finding yourself kind of story. She finds love against all these odds that keep stacking themselves against her. It was paranormal but believable, not so far fetched that you couldn't get into the storyline.

Book 2: I wasn't impressed how it started out, only b/c I was wanting to pick up where book one left off. It starts with Raven's sister Arianna's back story, and builds up to where the first book left off. Because I was so involved in Raven and Duncan's story I breezed through it to find Arianna's fate, and was again caught up in her love story.

Book 3: Bar far the best of the trilogy. Although it was shorter, the way Nidaba (introduced in book 2) and "Nathan's" story was told was just what I wanted from book one. It did tell of their past life together but it did so as flash backs, so you were consumed with the present while remembering a past long ago with them. I didn't like Nidaba in book two. The way her character was portrayed.. and didn't look forward to her story, but I am so glad I read on!

I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who loves a good love story with a bit of Magic.

In her Immortal Witch Series, Maggie Shayne gives readers a powerful saga about women and men who possess not only extraordinary powers, but also the gift of immortality. Each book, Eternity, Infinity, and Destiny, follows the lives of a different couple, telling their tale of eternal love. All three books are powerful; filled with magic and emotion, they suck you in and don't let go. The story moved through the various eras with wonderful fluidity and kept me completely enthralled until the end. I would highly recommend this to anyone that enjoys a well written story with romantic, paranormal, or even historical elements.

One of the things that I love about Maggie Shayne's novels is that she does more than tell a story, she creates an entire world and continues to enrich it by telling multiple stories that connect, each revealing new details of a wider tale. This collection is no different. It is truly a rollercoaster ride through rich settings with wonderful characters that leap to life from the page. There is a little of everything in these books--love, loss, betrayal, ambition, power, corruption, redemption--and all of it pushes the characters to find their place within their world. Even though the three novels tell the stories of all the characters introduced, I would love to see more from the world of the Immortal High Witches.

This is the series that got me hooked on all things Maggie Shayne. I l-o-v-e her stuff and it's all because I stumbled upon the first book in this series, "Eternity" while browsing an airport book store. So I'm super excited that it has been released for kindle/kobo with all 3 in the series attached (and for an amazing, cheap price!)
The first in the series, "Eternity" had my attention right away and is the book I compare all other paranormal romance back to - seriously, it is *that* good!
From the first page, this book had my attention and I couldn't put it down. I was excited for Infinity (book 2) and Destiny (book 3) and they didn't disappoint.
I don't want to give too much away - but the characters are so enticing and interesting and the story line is A++. You are on the edge of your seat in some areas and you feel the sadness of the characters in others.
When I completed the series I felt as though something was missing - it was one of those I can't wait to see how it ends, but I don't want to be done the book/series either!
I recommend this series and the author (her stuff is awesome!)

WOW!!!!! WOW!!!! WOW!!!!!

I can't not express how much I LOVED this series. Now I'm not one who typically likes books that are set in different times, but Maggie Shayne does such an amazing job of telling the stories from one era to another and making them flow seamlessly.
I do not do reviews that give any hints or spoilers thus making my reviews seem pretty generic, but I can guarantee that if you pick this box set up (much better than getting the books one by one, so that you can go from one book to the other without having to go searching for books 2/3) you will be captivated and have a hard time putting this series down. I know that even as a mother of 2 and needing to get up at 540am during the week, I spent a few nights justifying getting only 3 hrs sleep because I could not put these books down.

These are the first "magical" books that I have read by Maggie Shayne (I have read and loved her Brown and DeLuca novels, and the Secrets of Shadow Falls series), but I will definitely be reading anything and everything by Maggie Shayne that I can get my hands on :D

Sleep? Not with these books to read.

Sleep? Not with these books to read.

The Eternal Love trilogy spans the world and back again covering 4500 years of life, love, war, and every emotion known. Maggie Shayne has the ability to draw the reader along the intermingled timelines of her characters and bring to life their very essence to which the reader becomes so involved as to crave the next page continuously. The only mixed message between the 3 books is the number of years one character spent buried- 600, 400, 300- but in the end it couldn't matter less because all is righted in the book for the reader and the characters. Highly recommended for adult readers.

I absolutely love this amazing series. When I first picked up this series (5 years ago already? WOW!), I wasn't interested in witch things at all and was super skeptical (I had just gotten into paranormal and vampires were my only experience up until this poitn), but after getting just a few pages into it, I was hooked and immediately had to own the paperbacks so I could read and re-read over and over again. I love second chances and truth and passion for life in books and Maggie Shayne always delivers that. Her magical connection with her characters, scenery, and plot is just inspiring!

I have yet to read a book written by the wonderful Maggie Shayne that I did not LOVE! And the Eternal Love box=set was no exception. I feel in love with the immortal witch series. Maggie's writing is pure magic! As you read, you will find yourself inside the story - journeying alongside the characters as the struggle to be with the ones they love!
This series is fabulous! Buy it now & you will not regret it.

Maggie has always been my favorite writer since the first book I read "Wings in the Night" The Immortal Witches Series did not disappoint. It gives you all the romance of the couples that withstands time, enemy threats, magic, evil & betrayal and of course the paranormal twist that we all love. The series leaves you wanting to pick up the next book as soon as you finish the one you are reading. Never boring and you can't put it down until the last one is read!

Maggie Shayne never fails to keep me interested in her writing and this was no exception. I of course love reading about witches so this made it an even better read for me. Each of the 3 stories was great in its own way. My favorite of the 3 was Arianna and Nicodemus' story. Arianna has such a feisty and fun spirit that you can't help but like her. If there are ever any follow up stories to this series I will definitely be in line to read them! Thanks for a great read.
