ᯓꪆৎ “For in the face of such adversity, the simple act of persevering became an act of rebellion against the forces seeking to extinguish the last embers of hope smoldering beneath the rubble of their shattered lives.”

My deepest gratitude to Bruno Blanc, one of the many capeless heroes who walk among us, for sending me a copy of this heart-wrenching memoir in exchange for an honest review.

I have absolutely no words to describe how I felt while reading this piece. It touched the very depths of my heart and soul, both in a sense of pride and heartbreak.

Why pride? I’m filled with immense admiration to all the individuals who are bravely challenging and standing up against corrupt regimes that censor the truth, to stop the inhumane crimes being committed by them.

“People are crammed everywhere, overflowing into the hallways, their eyes wide with terror and exhaustion. We have children huddled together for comfort, mothers clutching their infants close, and elderly folks clutching whatever meager possessions they could salvage from the bombings. There’s no food, clean water is a luxury, and the electricity cuts plunge us into darkness with every terrifying boom, the silence punctuated only by the whimpers of the wounded and the prayers of the afraid. We’re operating by flashlight, rationing every bandage, every precious vial of medication. Each decision feels like a life-or-death gamble in this constant fight against time and dwindling resources."

A glimpse of the terrors in a Gazan hospital in a mere 104 words. Just imagining that situation makes me sick to my stomach, and what makes it even worse is that I know the reality is far more terrifying and suffocating than what my imagination is conjuring up. What I see on the screens is nothing compared to witnessing that scene before your eyes, living it.

“We treat the wounded, mend the broken, but for every life we save, ten more seem to be lost. But we fight on, we fight for our patients, for our families, for the very soul of this city. We will not be broken. We will not surrender."

But the beings who make that setting of despair and melancholy have a tiny spark of hope are truly, truly heroes. The medics and aid workers. God, this masterpiece hit home in ways I didn’t realize it could.

I am so thankful for the medics and aid workers who built the courage into landing themselves straight into a place that could leave wounds that may never fully heal. That is a level of bravery and humanity I wish to achieve when the time comes.

Their dedication, their passion is so admirable, I’m honestly shook. The hours and days of deprived rest, the smile they keep for the people even if it’s threatening to rumple, the determination to keep moving forward in the face of destruction. I felt as if the world overlooked these fierce souls who left the comfort, the luxury of their home to give life to the ones who thought theirs was over.

“It feels impossible. How can anyone keep going?"
“You don’t have a choice, brother. You fall apart, and who suffers? Your family, your neighbors, everyone around you. We keep going, not because it’s easy, but because it’s all we can do.”

My heart felt like a weight was dropped on it many times as I read through the stories of the beautiful souls Bruno met, but the story of the little girl named Layla truly shattered it. My eyes and my heart burned for this sweet child who was robbed of her childhood at such a young age. Left orphaned and with the role of surrogate mother for her baby brother.

My love goes to all the children of Gaza who lost their innocence, their vibrance, their joys during this genocide. Who had to take up a responsibility they weren’t ready for. Who had to stay strong in moments where they had every right to break. No one, most definitely not a child, should experience the horrors they went through and I pray upon their oppressors the harshest and cruelest punishment.

“Here, where life and death intersected in raw brutality, the rhythmic pulses of frayed humanity formed a defiant drumbeat, celebrating the resilience of the unbeatable human spirit against annihilation."

“Our voices, raised in unison, can shake the very foundation of silence, shattering the walls of indifference. Our skills, no matter how humble, can become potent instruments of change, catalysts for a world to be reborn. Let the searing pain we witness become the fuel that propels us forward, the driving force behind our unwavering commitment to justice."

The sense of hope, of humanity I experienced while reading this was extravagant.

I can’t say I stopped believing in a free Palestine but I’ve been struggling to believe in the people of our world. Day after day goes by, yet we still have so many people supporting these disgusting, horrid creatures who wish to wipe out human beings who are just like them– the only difference being their skin tone and religion.

But the progress is finally happening. Slowly, but surely. The protests, encampments, art pieces, songs, books– our cries for change and justice are finally being heard. The ICJ ruling is a mark in history we can and will never forget.

And it’s because of OUR voices, no matter the shape or form. We, “simple everyday people”, are the reason for this. Children, teenagers, adults, elderly folks– everyone. It’s our determination, our faith, our humanity, our hope that lead to a chance of a brighter, better future. If we had stopped our protests out of fear right when amoral forces tried to shut us down , we would have gotten nowhere. We would have lost. But we charged forward, regardless of the risks of being arrested, beaten, shot at. People lost their jobs, degrees, life opportunities, and why? Because they stood with the truth. This is what we call a revolution.

ᯓꪆৎ Overall

╰ A definite, MUST read. I hope whoever reads this goes through all the raw emotions I did.

All proceedings of this beauty goes to the orphaned children of Gaza.

“Every life saved, every whimper soothed, was a tiny act of defiance against the despair that threatened to consume them all."

“The rhythmic boom of airstrikes wasn’t background noise; it was a monstrous drumbeat echoing through the shattered city."

A personal observation of man’s inhumanity to man. Raw emotion and spirit undimmed in the brutal face of war.

This book should be a compulsory read for everyone but particularly for politicians that debate decisions that in effect are seeing the destruction of a country, its elderly population massacred so the memories and traditions of it people lost. The youth of Gaza obliterated so that hopes a dreams of a future generation are never to be fulfilled. Children witnessing the brutality of a war they should never be involved in, innocence lost.
But overall this book left me in awe not just of Bruno and his colleagues but of everyone who refuses to let their spirit to be dimmed in the face of such overwhelming destruction.
