Onley James lives in North Carolina with her daughter, her daughter-in-law, son-in-law, and a menagerie of animals, both good and evil. James splits her time between writing m/m romance and mainlining dangerous levels of caffeine and attempting to maintain her ever-slipping sanity.
When not at her desk you can find her whining about how much writing she has to do while avoiding said writing by binge-watching unhealthy amounts of television and doom scrolling on social media. She loves true crime documentaries, anti-heroes, and writing kinky, snarky books about morally gray men who fall in love with other men.
I couldn’t be bothered to take notes while reading this, so no detailed content warnings. However, if you read the main series it should be fine. No new tragedies. There’s mostly just drinking alcohol and sex and references to murder and past trauma. No breakups, no OM drama.
Absolutely loved all these extra stories. Especially all the interactions (lol) between Zane and Felix. Those two are the best.
For the most part, I really liked it. It was good to have more stories with all the characters. But I am disappointed we got so little of Thomas/Aiden and Archer/Mack. And that all the many stories with Asa, Zane, Felix and Avi were more erotica than plot. I don't mind some sexy but it was too much for me
Seriously though, this was the perfect hit for Mulvaney withdrawals. I loved the bonus epilogues and prologues but the mini fics were phenomenal.
The Core-Four are actually everything to me and I am so obsessed with Felix and Zane together. Better smut has never been written than those two messing around in between Asa and Avi.
And all the love for Noah. And the kids. And Thomas and Aiden. And Lola and Calliope. And EVERYTHING.
I will literally never move on from this series. I’ll always be reading or listening to one of the books at all times. I am begging Onley James to get Liam to narrate this book as well because everything is better in his sexy voice.
Not much here. A few cute moments, a few hot sex scenes. This felt more like fan fiction than anything. These shorts highlight how repetitive the author is when writing sex. Pretty much each scene has someone “folded practically in half” to get deeper, someone “grinding to get as deep as possible while they come” and someone “batting his hand away” when they get too sensitive after an orgasm. It’s just annoying to read the same phrases over and over, especially when those phrases (and a few others) were already heavily sprinkled throughout the series. Also, I don’t know what the obsession is with having babies/ collecting children. Lastly, the “core four” stories, while hot as Hell at times, didn’t ring true to the characters. It was like fan fiction ignoring the characters as they were written in order to get the hot scenes they want. I mean, it was all fine, but real short stories rather than slice of life snippets that stay true to the characters instead of just being whatever gets fans off would have been preferable for me. Maybe I am being harsh, and maybe I have just been over saturated with Mulvaneys, but this was mostly a let down.
Loved catching up with all my psycho bbys again 🧡 I most definitely devoured Atticus and Jericho’s fics as expected! Love the Core 4’s dynamics and shenanigans as well 😍 I cannot get enough of the Mulvaneys 🥹
I could have done without so many Avi/Felix/Asa/Zane stories. They weren’t my favorite couples in the series so 🤷🏾♀️ (well I love Avi & Asa, not a fan of their partners) I would have loved to see more of Thomas & Aiden actually being together and what their relationship looks like. Archer & Mac aren’t even in here at all. I expected more from all of the brothers & not just a select few.
Family & Felonies is an anthology of short stories and bonus epilogues (and prologues) from Onley James's Necessary Evils series. It's best read after you've finished with the series itself. You can expect dark humour, lots of spice, minor angst, and the chaos of married life and parenthood.
I absolutely adored this. All of these stories were originally published on Onley's Patreon, and this is a perfect keepsake for Patreon members as well as those that can't join! I had so much fun diving back into the Mulvaney's world, and it's making me want to do a re-read of the series. The spice was off the charts, as always, and I certainly found myself laughing out loud. If you're a fan of Necessary Evils you'll definitely want to give this one a read. It's relatively light (except for the dark humour which is perfectly on brand) so it's perfect for balancing out your TBR or cooling off after an angstier read.
I really enjoyed the first half of this anthology, especially the Core Four chapters! I love the scenes where the whole Mulvaney family are hanging out together - the banter is unmatched and they brought a smile to my face. I love all of these characters so much, so revisiting them was great.
The spice in this book is hot AF, but also very repetitive. Aside from the group scenes (which are amaaaaazing), most of it was the same, and I kind of got bored of reading spice in every single chapter. There were also some really nice (non sexual) core four chapters from patreon missing, so I wish those were included.
It’s also very clear that this book hasn’t been edited or proofread at all. I understand patreon chapters being unedited, but I think when you’re actually publishing/selling a book you need to check for mistakes. This book was riddled with spelling errors, instances where completely the wrong word had been used, and characters being called by the wrong name. It happened often enough that it distracted me from the story.
Overall, this was a fun book and I’d recommend it for dipping in/out of when you feel like revisiting the Mulvaneys. However, if you read it all in one go it might feel a bit repetitive after a while, and the book could use a proofreader.
im disappointed with these epilogues. they felt like fan fictions. i didn't like the relationship of asa x avi x zane x felix, also didn't understand the relationship of atticus and lucas with crickett and the girls. very little about thomas and aiden when we already had little in their own book and finally there was nothing about archer and mac
This was....underwhelming? Disappointing? Don't get me wrong; I liked quite a bit of it. Noah going nutty while trying to plan their wedding was entertaining. Seeing the twins and their partners all cozied up together was sexy as hell. But....there was a lot to be desired here. For starters, there was no Mac and Archer and the little section that was Thomas and Aiden....not really them, not together, anyways. And, I'm sorry but adding in the bonus epilogues, content that was already free? Poor move. Basically, 25% of what I paid for this paid for something I already had for free. Definitely not a fan of that.
And the editing. This really needed to be edited better. I understand that this was content included on Patreon and maybe writers don't edit their stuff on there. Okay, fine. I get that. You're insanely busy and this is bonus stuff. BUT...the minute you put it into a book, start selling it, you really need to edit it, need to polish those stories up 'til they shine! And this was not done.
I just feel there was so much more that could've been explored. So many of the Mulvaneys have kids now and, apart from it being mentioned as an aside in stories, it's not delved into. Maybe it is on Patreon but, if that's the case, maybe include that in your bonus content? Not everyone's got money to be handing over every month. So, books like these, we delight in seeing new content. I was *so* looking forward to this, had missed my insane Mulvaneys. But....this was just lacking, in my opinion.
Also, this is just a random personal preference, but, maybe put things in chronological order, not by couple? It'd help keep track of things.
I feel like there could've been more in here. More with the brothers spending time together, doing jobs. Or maybe their partners hanging out, figuring things out. Maybe they'll be another bonus book. If so, hopefully it'll have more content, have more new stuff for us readers to enjoy.
So, I do recommend it if you enjoy the antics of the Mulvaney family. There were still plenty of fun moments, a lot of sexy times (though, I have to agree with some others who rated this and said some of the sex scenes felt a bit repetitive--so maybe don't read it all in one sitting? I drew mine out, read chapters between other books.) and even a few heartwarming moments.
But, maybe don't get your hopes up too high. I did and they were kind of shattered.
If there's more bonus content put out in book form, however, I eagerly anticipate it.
I’ve been subscribed to the author’s Patreon for a while now, so I’ve been reading each of these short stories as they were published. Literally love all of them so much, and I’m so happy they’re all together in book format now. If you miss the Necessary Evils universe or if you wanted more from it (think, fanfic-style content/oneshots), then you’ll for sure love this anthology.
I’m particularly partial to Jake the Snake, Snitches Get Stitches, and Bring the Boots 🤭

Actually, poly can work, and it can be awesome and make perfect sense. But that’s not the case here. This is just mindless fan service. A couple of people decided to pay for it on Patreon so now the foursome is canon? Thanks, but no thanks. Asa and Zane were perfect together as they were. One of my two favorite couples in the series. Avi and Felix make no sense to me, mainly because Felix is so unlikable and by extension Avi being a simp for him becomes unlikable too. To see this forced relationship bleed through into Asa and Zane is plain disappointing.
Unfortunately I can’t rate the separate parts officially so: Absurd foursome: 0/5 Atticus and Jericho: 5/5 Adam and Noah: 5/5
I loved this so much! The Necessary Evils series is one of my all time favorites, and getting to read so much bonus content about my favorite psychopaths was just so good. I loved the Core Four content, loved all the little stories involving the kids and their chaos, and loved getting to see little bits of life after the main series ended. My only complaint is that there weren’t any Archer & Mac stories besides their bonus prologue. Otherwise, I loved this and I hope we get another one with even more bonus content! Family & Felonies is getting four and a half stars.
I wanted more of all the brothers. Where was Mac & Archer? Or Thomas & Aiden? Why so much of the twins and their mates? Also while it was nice to include all the bonus epilogues in one place, I was kind of bummed bc that was half the book that I was anticipating new content.
I truly enjoyed what was included that was new to me but I expected something more. 🤷🏻♀️
