Terry "Scuba" Scrubewski was looking forward to starting his life with the Vancouver Legacy. He hoped that he would one day reconnect with the one that got away. But he never anticipated what that reconnection would entail.Annette needed a new start in life for her and her kid after one horrific night with her ex. As she figured out her next move in life, she would never expect to find out that her knight in shining armor would turn out to be hockey player that she told worst lie to.
As old sparks reignite, both must navigate the complexities of their pasts, and the shadows that loom large. Can Scuba become the knight Annette needs, or will the weight of their histories prove too heavy?
Trigger This book contains themes of domestic violence.
Join Scuba and Annette on a journey of healing, love, and the courage to face the truth in this gripping hockey romance.
This was an ARC for me and the first time I have read Kat Obie’s work. Overall it was a good story, but I would have liked to see more of what happened after they were married. So maybe another book to detail that would be warranted in the future. There is domestic violence so take caution if that triggers you. I enjoy hockey romance a lot so I hope to read other books in her series.
If you know me at all, you know there are 2 themes I almost always refuse to read: anything with DV elements and secret baby/child. This book has both. My review/rating really focuses on how those themes were handled because they're incredibly emotional for anyone who has been through similar.
When Kat reached out and asked if I would read the book and give feedback about how the themes were handled, I was reluctant at first because I don't enjoy these books and my biggest issue with secret baby/child is that in all the books I've read, there is little shown about how upset the father is about the time lost with his child.
Because I always enjoy Kat's books, I said yes.
I'm thankful I did because she handled both themes well, wrote the scenes with care, considering all the sides, and utilized readers with experience for sensitivity reads. You can see she took time to develop those storylines in a way that was respectful to anyone who has experience with the themes in real-life.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It has everything I've come to love about her books: accurate hockey, relatable characters, humor, and a story that captivates you and makes you want to turn the page.
Single mom Annette leaves her abusive live in boyfriend for good after a beating lands him in jail and her in the hospital. Years earlier, she’d told her son’s father that she’d miscarried so he could begin his professional hockey career with no distractions.
Professional hockey player “Scuba” (Terry) is gobsmacked to find out that not only did his former girlfriend not miscarry, but one of his teammates has been mentoring his son. Can Terry forgive Annette for deceiving him all those years? Is there anything worth salvaging besides a relationship with his boy?
I understand the premise to a degree but the choice to keep Terry in the dark about the baby made zero sense to me. He was getting drafted to the pros, so supporting them wasn’t going to be a financial burden. (When one considers the concept of billet families to prospective players, hockey seems to be a very family oriented sport.) Annette’s mother was completely okay with things going either way and neither she nor Annette’s father - who’d kept in touch with Terry - never once thought he should know about being a father? Despite my complete empathy for Annette as a victim of domestic violence (not anything to do with Terry, it’s important to note) I still have major issues with her decision making.
I received an advance reader copy from the author and bookfunnel, and I’m sharing my honest review.
Was a very quick read. It was sweet but wish it had more in depth scenes or background it moves so quick. Spice I’d rate it a 🌶️ only minimal scenes. It was a cute romance though if you’re looking for something quick with a reconnection of old flames.
A Little Puck Luck by Kat Obie is the first book in the new series Loving the Legacy. This is an author fairly new to me, but I will say this book did not disappoint. There is a trigger warning because there is domestic abuse at the beginning of the book. As someone who has dealt with that in my past, I was still able to read it. I felt that the author did a great job with how she handled such a difficult topic.
Seven years ago, Annie (Annette) and Terry (Scuba) were a couple in love. However, everything changed when two things happened around the same time. Annie found out she was pregnant, and Terry was getting drafted into the NHL. Annie took it upon herself not to tell Terry and ended their relationship.
Terry "Scuba" Scrubewski never got over the one that got away, so he is shocked when he finds out his teammate is looking after a child that looks exactly like him when he was young. When his suspicions are verified and he comes face to face with Annie, he is beyond hurt that she lied to him about having a miscarriage.
The story is well-written with great characters. I love the way the author handles the domestic abuse, especially when Terry suggests therapy for Eric as well as Annie. So many people have misconceptions about therapy and mental health, and I'm happy that the author tackled that and made it a normal thing to do. Annie is a survivor, and sought the help she needed to get through the emotional trauma from the abuse. As with any trauma, it takes time to get through it, but she was determined not to let it define her life. As for Terry...he is truly Annie's night in shining armor. I love how he immediately stepped into dad mode for Eric. He never stopped loving Annie, and that is apparent right from the beginning of them reuniting.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because I didn't agree with Annie's choice to lie about the miscarriage. Terry could have done both...the career and the family, and she took that decision away from him. However, with that being said, Terry quickly made up for lost time and proved to be an amazing father!
I was given an ARC by the author. My views are my own and are in no way influenced by anyone else.
This is the second book I’ve read by Kat Obie and it did not disappoint! This book has a few of my fav troupes: single mom, a hockey player, and a second chance at love.
Terry (Scuba) and Annie (Annette) used to be in a relationship and just as Terry was about to start his career as a hockey player Annie broke things off and kept a huge secret from him. Several years later while doing PR work at the hospital he noticed two of his buddies headed down the hall to visit someone. Terry got the shock of his life (actually two of them). Annie had been badly injured (check your TW’s: DV & miscarriage) but was fighting to be herself again.
Annie is incredibly strong to push through the pain and focusing on getting not just better but stronger. I loved how Terry shared with Annie’s son (Eric) about talking to a professional and normalizing that. Once Terry got over his initial frustration about being kept in the dark he was all in with both Annie and Eric.
I loved reading this book and seeing how the author dealt with the heavy topics of mental health, and domestic violence (they did is great job). If those triggers aren’t an issue for you, then I recommend reading this book. I can’t wait to keep exploring more books by this author.
Poignant but ultimately uplifting tale with a second chance at love. Annette (Annie) and Terry (Scuba) were young lovers. He was just starting his NFL career when Annie finds out she is pregnant. She led him to believe she miscarried to allow him to put all his energy into his career. Years later, in she is in an abusive relationship, he re-enters their lives, and now that he knows about his son (Eric), he is determined to be a good father. But can he forgive Annie?
Be warned, there is an open door abuse scene at the beginning of the story. My heart was so sad for Annie and the abuse she endured and the emotional trauma it was still causing her and Eric. I never understood her decision to let Scuba go, not to mention him having to grieve what he thought was the loss of his child; not to mention losing Annie. It made it harder to like Annie at first, but I did come to respect her core strength by the end. Scuba was a cinnamon roll for her and Eric and an overall good guy and awesome Dad (❤️ 🦖🥞s). I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy.
This second chance, hockey romance with spice! Annette (Annie) who is a single mom finally leaves her abusive ex for good after a beating lands her in the hospital. Where she sees Terry “Scuba” Scrubewski for the first time since she walked away from him seven years ago. She lied to him and pushed him away to help him pursue his dreams of becoming a professional hockey player.
Scuba recently moved back to Vancouver, BC to find his hockey buddy raising a kid who looks like he could be his twin. Much to his surprise it turns out that the little boy is Annie’s and his son that he thought she miscarried prior to their breakup. He offers them a much needed place to live so he can get to know Eric better and maybe reconnect with his lost love.
Can Scuba forgive Annie for keeping this secret from him? Can Annie move past her trauma and learn to trust again?
This book made me feel so many emotions throughout. The story and banter between characters was good. It kept my interest and I had trouble putting it down. I did feel that it moved too fast and could have had more detail. I wish it had some more depth and detail to it. Overall, it is a good, quick, sweet romance read.
Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 🌶️🌶️
Tropes: Second Chance Single Mom Hockey player Abusive relationship (Ex)
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review
Reunited under unfortunate circumstances, Terry finds Annette with a secret she kept from him years prior. The emotional turmoil experienced was heartbreaking and really could have been avoided if Annette had not made her earlier decisions. Despite the situation and the violent reasons that led her back to Terry, their love story was worth it to be together like they should have been from the beginning. Terry was absolutely wonderful, and overall, it was a satisfying ending.
I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily leave this review.
5 Star Review A Little Puck Luck (Loving The Legacy #1) by Kat Obie
Kat Obie is a relatively new author to me but what I have read I have enjoyed. I really love single parent stories and this was a good example of the genre.
For Terry “Scuba” Scrubewski. Annette is the one who got away. This second chance at love story rocked the boxes for me but be warned it deals with domestic violence much may be a trigger for some.
When they re connect the connection they once had is just as intense. However they need to come to terms with the past in order to create a future. The question is, can they?
Second chance A new team for Terry brings him back in contact with Annette, his first love, just in time to save her and her son. Check the trigger warnings as this deals with domestic violence and loss. Full of secrets, surprises, emotion, drama, difficult situations, second chances and family. I loved Terry and Eric and how after so many years they all finally came together as a family. I didn’t understand a lot of Annette’s choices but I guess everyone deals with things differently.
this is the story of what happens when Terry (Scuba) finds out that Annette had his son years ago but did not tell him so he could live his dream of professional hockey. But then these two run into each other after some drama, have to deal with more drama, and a very cute boy. I was rooting for these two the story and characters and had me laughing at times.
Terry (Scuba) & Annette (Annie): Second chance/ forgiveness & healing/ secret child/ hockey romance: This was such a sweet story. I loved how perfect Scuba was for Annie and Eric in every way that they needed. I really enjoyed seeing him build the relationship between both of them individually and he let them set the pace. Great book! Loved it!!!
A sweet story about second chances. I had a hard time with a lot of Annette’s decisions. For Terry (Scuba) he had missed out on so much, and Annette was the one who got away, the one who broke his heart.
Annette slowly grew on me and the connection/feelings her and Terry had was genuine and sweet.
This story is a rollercoaster. It starts of very sad and then takes a turn for the better. I enjoyed seeing how Annie goes from being torn down and belittled to loved and reassured. I do feel like the story is a tad bit rushed and there are some jumps in the timeline. Over all it’s so cute and seeing how Erick grows into his own person and so outspoken is amazing and definitely made me slightly emotional. Especially in the scenes where Terry asks him for his permission and his input.
This is a new hockey series by Kat Obie called Loving the Legacy based in Vancouver, BC. She definitely started it with a bang and two first loves who were meant to be together no matter what life through at them. Seven years earlier Annette (Annie) and Terry (Scuba) had a perfect relationship, she was going to go to university, and he would be drafted into the NHL. They would make it work, but there were other plans for them, including a pregnancy, a big lie, and Annie breaking Scuba’s heart. Then it all comes back together as Annie ends up in the hospital because of her current abusive boyfriend and Terry realizes that the little boy his teammate is mentoring and looking after, is the son he never knew he had. Now the question is can Terry forgive her and everyone else that knew to bring back the love they once had as a couple? When he finally realized that the reason she lied was because she loved him so much, she would do anything to help him make it in the NHL.
There is a lot of emotions in this book, including one of the main characters being in a domestic violent household. It is not something that anyone can easily distance themselves from, but it can be done with a lot of strength, will power and love.
Thank you for the ARC I received from the author in return for my honest opinion.
I received and ARC of this story and am leaving an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. It made me feel several emotions. One was empathy. Annie and Terry fell in love young. Annie became pregnant. She was afraid Terry was going to lose his dream of the NHL because he was losing focus due to her and the baby. She told him she had a miscarriage and ghosted him.
Fast forward six years later Terry sees Eric in the hospital with a fellow member of his hockey team and immediately knows it is his son.
Annie has had a hard life since she told Terry she miscarried. She had a child on her own and entered a relationship with a man named Luke Donaldson. Luke was physically abusive and caused Annie to miscarry.
Terry wants to be a part of his son’s life. Annie and Eric move in with him. I love Terry’s excitement over Eric. I also loved his patience with Annie. He was hurt, and rightfully so, but he was still in love with Annie. Thanks to Terry, Annie healed and grew.
I would have loved to have seen Luke Donaldson punished for the abuse Annie received and the murder of her unborn child.
I loved this story. It has a HEA. I couldn’t stop reading once I started.
This was my first ARC from this author, whilst I enjoyed the story overall it lost a stars for me when the MMC was overly aggressive towards the FMC who had just survived a brutal DV event. I understand his anger with not having known that he was a father but I don't think that his attitude was warranted at times and i couldn't feel the chemistry with them considering this.
The MMC's interaction with his son grew and helped to redeem him somewhat but it felt like one minute he was angry and would have rather seen her out on the street to all of a sudden head over heels. I don't see how she was anything more than a victim and would have liked to see him support her more considering all that she went through.
The pace felt extremely fast, the chapters felt choppy and just when you were drawn into a scene it immediately stopped and moved on to something else. It may have been the quick speed of my reading but I just couldn't get into the story and felt it didn't flow enough for me.
There were bits missing, some more backstory and character building would have helped as I felt that I struggled to endear to them and was just plain angry at the MMC that I was happy to DNF it but I wanted to keep going and see if there was any redemption arc.
The supporting characters were great and I can see that where the following books could be expanded from.
This will not stop me from reading the next book in the series but I couldn't give this more than 2 stars and will proceed with caution.
For a relatively short book, there was plenty of drama and some heartbreak, all resolved at the last. I actually wished for more pages, since I definitely enjoyed reading about Annette and Scuba and Eric and their developing situation. The short chapters add to the feeling of anxious and fast moving action, common to both hockey and to Annette and Scuba reconnecting. The book has a very dark opening scene, so be advised if you have issues reading about domestic violence. Annette and Scuba's son Eric is an adorable scene stealer, as children often are in romance novels. Ms. Obie gets it all right with the setting in the world of hockey, which is not something every writer can manage. It was great to meet some of Scuba's teammates, both current and past, and I certainly hope to read more about some of them in future novels.
I was given an ARC and asked to provide a review, which I was happy to do.
Every book I pick up by Kat Obie I absolutely love and that leaves me wondering what I haven’t read more by her. If you love single parents stories or second chance romance this is the book for you. I do want to point out this story deals with domestic violence so be aware of the trigger warnings at the start. Terry (Scuba) Scrubewski lost the woman of his dreams and he sees Annette as the one that got away. But when they meet up again years later they realise the chemistry is just as hot as it was the first time around. The only problem is to move forward with a future they need to confront and deal with the past and the secret Annette kept from him. I loved everything about this book, I fell hard and fast for Scuba and I adored Annette but what took this book to another level was the love for Annette had for her son Eric and the relationship Scuba built with him when he was confronted with the truth. A captivating love story that I highly recommend.
A little puck luck had a couple of my least favorite tropes but because it’s Kat Obie, I had to read it.
I didn’t connect Annette. I didn’t understand, really any, of her choices. I truly felt for Terry and think he handled - not even a surprise - but a “I miscarried” child in a very mature way. I didn’t expect that and I’m not sure I would have handled it so well if I was in his shoes.
In true Obie fashion she challenged me to second guess my views on some things (essentially all of Annette’s choices) to have a more sympathetic and empathetic lens. It’s not often an author can challenge me in that way.
I really loved that Obie decided to let them fall back in love while also feeling the love nostalgically. I was so glad that it wasn’t “insta” after all that took place.
I found myself completely captivated by this story of love, heartbreak, difficult decisions, and themes of domestic abuse. The writer handled them all in a very sensitive manner and respectful to these characters as well to readers.
While I didn't agree with some of Annette's decisions( keeping the baby a secret from Terry).. I can see looking back how this played a role in the storyline overall..THIS is a book of fiction people...Overall: great characters, well written, storyline was amazing, great dialogue, chemistry off the charts between characters. It's a book that will have you saying...OK just one more chapter...then I'll stop...then you realize it's really really late...like 5:00am and you got your ending!!! Get. The. Book!!! It's so worth the lost sleep!! 😉
I received an ARC from the Author and leaving my honest review voluntarily.
I love hockey. And I absolutely loved this story and the main characters, Terry, “Scuba”, and Annette. Kat creates characters that are so believable you feel like you know them. Scuba and Annette were high school sweethearts. Because a of decision made with the heart, they lose touch and only meet again 7 years later under unfortunate circumstances. There is sensitive material in this novella including domestic violence. There is romance as Annette and Scuba re-connect and Scuba gets to know his son, Eric. Eric is adorable and steals any scene he’s in. Kat writes character of Eric so well. Getting to meet some of Scuba’s Legacy teammates and the camaraderie they share is great. I loved this book and I hope Kat will write more stories about the Vancouver Legacy
Great start to this new series If you love hockey romance, hidden pregnancy and second chances, then you should enjoy this story. The author has created and interesting read, against a familiar background storyline, but has added extra interest and details. It is sensitively written and the feelings, hurt and emotional experiences are well defined. Annie and Terry were yound lovers but their relationship ended 7 years ago, after he was drafted to NHL.. She was pregnant , but told him that she miscarried. Now she is in an abusive relationship of DV and Terry discovers a few truths and lies.
A Little Puck Luck is the first in the Loving The Legacy series. This novella is a quick read that is packed with emotion.
Annette and Terry were each others first loves. They broke it off and 7 years down the road they reconnect in less than ideal circumstances. There is a lot to unpack between these two and a lot of trauma to get through as well.
Kat Obie did a great job with how how much empathy is packed into Annette and Terry's decision.
I love this hockey romance. It’s a second chance romance for a couple who’d been in love when they were just on the cusp of adulthood. Terry, whose nickname is Scuba, left to play hockey with the goal of making it to the NHL. His girlfriend Annie kept a secret from him as she thought it would make him give up his goal. Years later he sees her again and he’s stunned to see how much she’s changed…and realizes he has a son.
This book features traumatic events affecting Annie and Eric. They begin a very emotional journey to reconnect and become a family.
It was an ARC for me. This is not my first Kat Obie book. I like this author, I recommend the other series. I loved reading this book and seeing how the author approached the subject of domestic violence, even if it may shock some. I hope that, little by little, some books will also help to lift taboos. The story is well written and a smooth read. Looking forward to reading the next books in the series.
