Brooke Metcalf is an accomplished therapist who’s fallen into a rut she can’t seem to shake. Tegan Cooper is a recent graduate trying to acclimate to a new city before starting the job she’s worked for years to secure. At the nudging of good friends, they end up at the same bar, seeming to have little in common but a desire to do something different. A spark of connection and immediate attraction spurs them to take chances they wouldn’t normally consider, ending with an amazing and affirming one-night stand that leaves both women at peace, until they arrive at work on Monday to find Tegan is a new junior colleague under supervision in the practice where Brooke works.

Shocked and unprepared for the far-reaching fallout of one uncharacteristic encounter, Tegan and Brooke cling to their careers as they start a delicate dance between forging a workplace relationship and protecting their hearts in the process. With the help of amazing colleagues and a determination to do right by everyone in the office, they build a friendship based on mutual care and a healthy respect for boundaries. However, in a business that requires intimate conversations and vulnerable moments, lines between professional and personal soon blur, as the connection that once overtook them proves too powerful to ignore.

Informed Consent is a tender, one-night-to-forever, age-gap romance exploring the wide reach of love, trust, healing, and the courage to embrace what you know to be true even when it doesn’t align with what’s safe or expected.

Rachel Spangler never set out to be an award winning author. She was just so poor and so easily bored during her college years that she had to come up with creative ways to entertain herself, and her first novel, Learning Curve, was born out of one such attempt. She was sincerely surprised when it was accepted for publication and even more shocked when it won the Golden Crown Literary Award for Debut Author. She also won a Goldie for her second novel, Trails Merge. Since writing is more fun than a real job, and so much cheaper than therapy, Rachel continued to type away, leading to the publication of The Long Way Home and LoveLife. She plans to continue writing as long as anyone anywhere will keep reading.

Rachel, and her partner, Susan, are raising their young son in Western New York. They spend winters skiing and their summers traveling and watching their beloved Cardinals. Regardless of the season, Rachel always makes time for a good romance, whether she's reading it, writing it, or living it.

Rachel can be found online at www.rachelspangler.com or on Facebook.

Brooke and Tegan are unlike any characters I’ve encountered before—deeply self-aware, graceful, and overflowing with love for one another. The slow burn of their relationship is torturous, but the payoff is absolutely worth it.

The connection between Tegan and Brooke from their first meeting at the bar throughout that entire night was so intense. Truly one of the most passionate one-night stands I’ve read. Then afterwards the workplace aspect was so believable as it was written with such care. There was so much depth and emotion in this entire book. Also, the supporting characters were a real treat. They were all so fun, caring, and really added another level to the story. If you’re in the mood for an age-gap, workplace, slow burn post-one-night stand romance, I highly recommend this one.

P.S. Fingers crossed for books for all the supporting characters in the future

Thank you to the author for the book in exchange for an honest review

4.5 Stars!!

Tegan is a late bloomer and although she finally secured a job as a therapist, she’s almost 30 and only pre-license. This means that she’s still laughably behind her old classmates and eating boxed mac and cheese weekly. So on her first night in Buffalo, NY, Tegan lets her best friend talk her into going out on the town for her last weekend of being unemployed. She expects to have one decidedly oversweet drink, a nice meal, and be in bed by 9. Instead, she finds a sexy older woman who seems to get Tegan in a way nobody ever has. After an amazing but one-off night together she feels ready to begin her new life. However, when Tegan realizes the woman she slept with is a part of the team that decides the status of her license her entire future crashes in front of her eyes. Talk about a conflict of interest! Can Tegan salvage her career before it has even begun or will her pull towards Brooke prove too much for a workplace relationship?

Brooke is tired of the same routine with the same people. Although she loves them dearly, something is missing in her life and she just can’t put her finger on it. So when a beautiful young stranger strikes up a conversation at the bar she finds herself in an unexpected situation. Although Brooke's hesitant to “do casual” as she never has before, the odds of her seeing this woman again are slim to none, so what’s the harm in a little fun? However, when she walks into work the following Monday and finds her boss's new supervisee staring at her with the same eyes as the woman from the bar she realizes stepping out of her comfort zone may have been a mistake. Can Brooke hide her feelings long enough for Tegan to move on to a different practice? Or will she find exactly what she was looking for in someone she never thought to look for? All that and more in Informed Consent.

What a romance! This was an emotional read, but not in a sappy overly done 90s rom-com way. The emotions felt grounded in reality and between the themes of found family, forgiveness, and healing mixed with the chemistry and enticing plot, I was hooked! It wasn’t cheesy and it didn’t overcompensate by being excessively serious or trying to change the world of romance. The characters get under your skin and the various tough spots they experienced felt like places we could all genuinely find ourselves in. If you enjoy deep emotional connections and mature romances you are in for a treat!

Brooke is a character I relate to and am attracted to. Her innate sense of being lures you into a feeling of security immediately. She is such a comforting and genuine person that you forget she has insecurities, especially when you are in Tegan’s POV. And she consistently makes choices that align with her morals, unless she lets herself be influenced by external forces. This character design works so well because we have all met, or been a Brooke at one point in life. Sometimes it truly does take a person on the outside to push one out of their comfort zone, otherwise, they’ll keep making the same decisions. This is a main theme of the book that truly shines through in its characters. Brooke’s well-rounded nature leaves room for “less desirable” traits such as being neurotic and stubborn. But the way that Tegan sees, accepts, and soothes those sides of Brooke lends well to the genuine credibility of their connection.

Tegan is a character I enjoyed less but in an important way as her character is someone who I would struggle to understand in real life. My ongoing annoyance at her choices shows that she has great characterization and takes action in line with who she is. Although until the middle of the book, she is annoying and immature, as her confidence develops she comes into herself personally and professionally.

The plot is designed for this type of growth and works well for the character's internal and external goals. Tegan is trying to become a licensed therapist and heal from abandonment wounds. Brooke is trying to find the spark in her professional life again and let go emotionally. And since both of their external goals are quickly derailed by the one-night stand they have to spend the rest of the book working together to put the pieces back. This in turn helps them with their internal goals as Brooke brings stability and understanding into Tegan’s life and Tegan helps Brooke stay out of her head and be present in the moment. Alongside them unknowingly cementing their queer-found family and dealing with difficult clients as therapists in Buffalo.

My only critique is the pacing. I found myself skimming in the middle and there were a few filler scenes that left me with no further insight into the characters or plot. This did bump it from a potential 5-star read to a 4.5-star, in my opinion, but I still highly recommend the book.

All in all, this heartwarming and slow-burn romance is a must-read. From one-bed tension to raw emotional confessions, you’ll be itching to find out what’s next. Not to mention wishing you could book a session with any of these therapists. If you like grounded romances with a surprising level of spice you are in the right place. Happy reading!

TW: Alcohol, anxiety, attempted murder, cheating, divorce, misogyny, sexually explicit scenes, and violence.

Thanks so much to Rachel Spangler for sending me this eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I've read a few of Spangler's books and enjoyed them, but this didn't work for me.

It started off really well. I felt the instant connection between Brooke and Tegan, and their night was great to read. I thought it would lead to a forbidden romance type of book, but that wasn't the case.

Once they realise they're going to be colleagues, the book falls down. Their chemistry drained away behind far too much 'therapist' dialogue until I was skimming the book. There was just far too much dialogue. Pages and pages of people talking, with little description, and I sometimes struggled to follow who was speaking because they all sounded the same. This goes on for the majority of the book.

I also didn't believe their chemistry besides that first night. They hardly ever commented on the other in a sexy/romantic way, and I didn't get any sense they were struggling to maintain a professional relationship. They seemed to fall right into being colleagues easily, but I get the sense the book wanted the reader to think it was hard for them? Didn't seem to be.

It picked up towards the end, but not enough to make the long middle any better.

There was also a subplot involving Tegan and a married couple she was counselling, and I called it so early (she didn't) it made me really doubt her abilities as this amazing therapist.

4 ⭐️

This one pulled me out of my reading slump so safe to say I really enjoyed it :)

Edit:

Informed Consent is one of those books that you find yourself nearing the end of and you almost want to ease on the brakes so you don't finish it... but you also don't want to stop reading. It's also the definition of a slow burn done right. Now if you know me, you know I'm not a huge fan of angst. This book felt like almost pure angst at times because of how well the chemistry, tension and longing were written combined with it being a slow burn romance, but it's those things that had me hooked. Not to mention just watching the relationship between Brooke and Tegan develop from a one night stand, to colleagues, to friends, and then finally to lovers, was so sweet to witness. Did I mention how lovable both the MC's are by the way? There was something so utterly endearing about them, and they were also probably the most mature and self aware characters I've ever come across.

Another thing that made this book shine for me was the side characters! Gillian felt like the mother hen of the group and was a great best friend to Brooke, and Robin was almost like the cool, fun loving aunt haha. Naomi appeared a little less since she didn't work with them, but she was just as likeable and I loved her banter with Tegan (she was also the main reason Brooke and Tegan met so brownie points ✨).

Overall this was a great read (which I had no doubt it would be, rec point +1), and a lovely introduction to Rachel Spangler. I'm already looking forward to the next one :)

3.5⭐️A therapist's office with queer therapists. I believe it's a first for me.
I adored the immediate and genuine connection between Brooke and Tegan. They are both highly intelligent women. I wondered how Spangler was going to handle their "forbidden" relationship, but they did so with surprising realism. I definitely enjoyed all the scenes where they care for each other, and the intimate scenes are full of chemistry. Both women are so brainy and think logically, as shrinks would. The slow burn was a bit excruciating to read at times. They truly handle things as I would in real life, I admit it’s kind of refreshing to read about characters who have their heads on their shoulders. But when I read romance, I tend to prefer characters who would do the opposite of me: characters who think with their hearts more than their heads.
Although I did enjoy following some of the patients, therapy is not really well developed in France, so this world felt foreign to me. I never learned to work on myself or dissect my feelings, so all the therapy talk did not resonate deeply with me.
As a result, this specific book didn’t really speak to me, but I have no doubt it will speak to a lot of people.
I really enjoyed Robin’s character. She was full of life. May I dare wish for a book about her and the mysterious Sawyer?

Informed Consent by Rachel Spangler is a beautiful age gap, workplace romance that has taken up so much of my time. I can’t stop reading it.

Brooke and Tegan have a chance meeting at a bar. There is an undeniable connection and attraction between them which leads to a one night stand that is completely out of character for either of them.

Content to not take things further and let the encounter be something beautiful shared with a stranger, Brooke and Tegan part ways. That is until they meet again on Monday morning at work.

Shocked by this turn of events they try to navigate a working relationship that consists or respect and boundaries. But that pull and attraction lingers beneath the surface and soon becomes too much to ignore.

I am irrevocably in love with this story and its characters. I got swept away by the sheer beauty of everything that happens, I’ve been stuck in this world for weeks and I still don’t want to let go.

Spangler writing is always fabulous, but in this book it seems to be on another level. The way they navigated the delicate balance and fine line these characters had to walk is brilliant. Every word, sentence, and paragraph had such depth and meaning, yet I laughed as much as I was moved. It’s utterly gorgeous.

Brooke and Tegan are wonderful, I wanted them to be together from the start, but totally understood why they couldn’t be. Brooke is more reserved and tends to put up walls to protect not only herself, but those around her. Tegan is careful but also an open book, she wears her heart on her sleeve. It’s amazing how different they are in some aspects, yet in others they are so similar. I don’t think I’ve met many pairs like these in books I’ve read, they’re totally unique and absolutely awesome.

The side characters in this book are fabulous, they all have a purpose and a place, I longed to be part of their friendship group. It’s a found family that ticks all the boxes.

5 stars 🌟plus more stars, plus a few more stars from me. I couldn’t love this book more.

3.5 ⭐️ First off, Im a fan of Spangler's books and Ive read several. This book was not my favorite of her's and I'm probably and outlier compared to other fans.

I have mixed feelings on this book, parts were interesting and enjoyable and other parts were repetitive and not engaging.

I liked the banter between Brooke and Tegan, especially at the baseball game and on their road trip. The parts pertaining to their work rules and regulations were spot on and very professionally written. Multiple times Tegan said "I don't know, what I don't know." I love this thought and wish more people acknowledged this about themselves. I liked Tegan's character best, she was naive but very honest with life skills and work knowledge.

The therapy scenes with the patients Tommy and Victoria were interesting.

I felt the relationship between Brooke and Teagan started out hot and I felt their attraction in the opening scenes. But throughout the book, even though they both constantly commented on how hard their separation was, I didn't feel enough emotion or angst over it.

And as to people changing with therapy, I don't believe people really change, yes their behavior and actions can be modified and changed. Yes their outlook and attitude can definitely change but their personality underneath it all doesn't change. I just had to throw that in because of it being discussed throughout the book.

Brooke and Tegan felt an immediate connection and attraction when they first met. The chemistry between them was undeniable, and it seemed likely that they would end up spending the night together. However, when Teagan started her new job 48 hours later and found that Brooke was her new colleague, the situation became somewhat awkward and less than ideal.

The subsequent storyline was brilliant and wonderfully written. Their connection made it exceedingly difficult for them to resist their desires, and it was only a matter of time before their barriers collapsed and they succumbed to their undeniable connection. The development of the relationship between Brooke and Tegan, from their first night together to the point where they could no longer resist their desire for one another, is an incredibly beautiful story. I found myself wishing that the book would never end.

I truly enjoyed all the supporting characters as well. Naomi, Tegan's best friend, is always unpredictable and brings laughter whenever she appears. Their coworker, Robin, exudes energy and has amusing nicknames for everyone, making her a delightful character. Last but not least, Gillian, the group's leader and maternal figure, completes this wonderful team. They are all exceptional individuals who would be a pleasure to have as friends and supporters.

I must say, I found it exceptionally difficult to put this book down. It is a captivating page-turner that I highly recommend.

Wow. I don't think my vocabulary is big enough to aptly describe what it was like to read this novel. Though if I was to try I would say it was intense and so all emcompassing, from the get go, it had all of my attention. Credit to Spangler for the phenomenal writing!

I fell into this story straightaway; I found its opening chapters, filled with good natured banter and friendship, quite appealing. I immediately liked the characters. Tegan is a unique dichotomy of youthful inexperience and old-soul wisdom. It’s charming and plays so wonderfully well against Brooke’s more worldly life experience, softening her and making the chemistry between the women completely endearing. Their romance is charged, emotional and fraught with ethical dilemmas and roadblocks. However, despite all of that, readers fall in love with them as they navigate their one-night-to-forever romance. It’s a compelling journey, scripted with emotional intelligence and insight. The raw and heartfelt honesty will no doubt hit readers in the “feels” big time.

Spangler never fails to impress readers with their ability to create absorbing story worlds. In Development, Edge of Glory, Fire and Ice and Quiver are just a few that quickly come to mind; each contains a richly developed story world that is transportive and detailed, enabling readers to “see” the story as it unfolds. Informed Consent, Spangler’s latest, is no different. Its story world is well fleshed, and authentic. Spangler plops readers inside the world of clinical therapists, making the day to day inner workings of the profession feel realistic and approachable. Spangler does this by including seemingly small and insignificant elements, consistent bits and pieces that ensure a vibrant and textured story world. Readers find it not only immersive, but captivating as well.

Supporting characters are another strong suit of Spangler’s. They know how to utilize them to their fullest potential. Readers are generally drawn to them, too. This is especially true for Informed Consent’s Robin. She is as dynamic and “real” as they come. She has her own distinct personality—she’s not some cardboard cutout or prop. When she walks into a scene, readers know they are going to be entertained and charmed. More importantly though, she’s invaluable to the storytelling. She gives it substance and validity. Her interactions with Brooke and Tegan provide insight and context. Readers are better able to understand Brooke and Tegan’s inner workings—what they want and what they fear. Robin’s presence always manages to highlight the raw truth of the moment. Furthermore, her timing is impeccable. Spangler knows exactly when to insert Robin into the storytelling, as she always seems to give the story just what it needs in that moment.

This romance is complex and nuanced with plenty of subtext. The characters’ relationship starts as a hook up, a trope readers are all familiar with. The journey, however, is anything but tired and worn out—quite the opposite, in fact. It remains original and alluring throughout. Additionally, the chemistry between Brooke and Tegan is irresistible. Readers are quickly pulled into the dynamics of their “situation,” mostly because the parameters between these two women are ever shifting and changing. It makes for some intense and eventful reading, but the growth that takes place at the end is meaningful, moving and heartfelt. Spangler wraps it up right, choosing to script a full-circle moment that creates a sense of completion and symmetry, emphasizing Informed Consent’s themes most perfectly. It’s good writing and vintage Spangler.

Final remarks…

This is one of the best books I’ve read so far this year. The character development is top shelf. The story crafting is stellar. It starts out strong and remains engaging. The way Spangler exposes Brooke and Teagan’s vulnerabilities and raw emotions is piercing at times; they cut these women wide open with beautiful scenes and gorgeous dialogue that tugs at the heart. However, it results in growth and change that is so relatable and moving, one cannot look away. This book—these women—will touch your heart and get under your skin. Spangler is always a must read for me, and Informed Consent didn’t disappoint one bit. It is absolutely a two thumbs up and waving wildly in the air kind of book!

Strengths…

Engaging, charged romance
Likable, captivating characters
Original and emotionally satisfying

While I found the narrative of this book engaging with mature, well-drawn characters, the execution was lacking for me in certain aspects.

The story revolved around Tegan, who had a one-night stand the night before starting her new job, only to discover that her new colleague was her fling. This setup promised drama and romantic tension, but for me, the follow-through fell short. While the characters were mature and their interactions were considered, the narrative sometimes felt too slow, particularly due to the heavy emphasis on "safe space" and "therapy speak." While these elements were well-written and thoughtfully integrated, they diffused the romantic chemistry that I found myself craving in a romance novel.

One of the standout aspects of the book was the supporting cast. Characters like Robin and the dynamics between Gillian and Brooke provided a sense of found family that was both heartwarming and engaging. These relationships added depth and richness to the story, providing memorable moments that stood out even if the main romance did not always hit the mark.

The initial spark between Tegan and her colleague was palpable, but the transition from a one-night stand to a professional relationship, and back again, was where the narrative seemed to struggle. The sexual tension, while present, did not always mesh well with the serious tone that the story often took. This imbalance made parts of the book feel less compelling, as the parallel between the romance and the professional dynamics didn’t always align seamlessly.

Despite these points, "Informed Consent" had much to offer. The writing was strong, and Spangler’s ability to create realistic, likable characters was evident throughout. For those who appreciate a more introspective and mature romance with a focus on personal growth and supportive relationships, this book could be quite satisfying.

In summary, "Informed Consent" might not be for everyone, particularly those looking for a fast-paced romance. However, it offered a thoughtful exploration of relationships and personal dynamics that could be rewarding in its own right.

Thank you so much Rachel Spangler for an ARC!

My favorite part of this story had to be the found family dynamics. I love all four of their relationships. Gillian and Brookes friendship has to be one of my favorites along with everything Robin was in.

I’ll be honest and say i wasnt feeling their relationship after the one night stand and the switch to professionals only. In the first meet I loved and then when the dynamics switched back I did but I struggled a teeny bit in the middle with it.

I think the sexual tension needed to either be built up or the seriousness of the situation toned down. The two didnt really parallel well to me but otherwise i loved all the aspects of the book.

Robin was not the main character of this story but she had to be my favorite. Talk about an absolute ball of chaos, adventurer, woman slayer, best friend golden retriever type queen with killer nicknames. I think Im in love with her a bit. NOW ROBIN AND NAOMI omg if they dont have their own book I’m writing a fanfic.

I think this might be my favorite Rachel Spangler book so far. The characters were fantastic. I loved Tegan and Brooke and watching their relationship grow, with all the obstacles they worked through together.
Meanwhile, the therapist setting added so much depth to the story. It felt fresh and well thought out, and I really enjoyed how it was woven into the plot as well.
The side characters obviously deserve a mention too: Gillian and Robin especially made the story shine. Their voices and personalities were strong, and with Brooke and Tegan they formed a friendship group that was genuinely fun to read about. I loved every moment of reading their dynamic.
In addition, the pacing worked well for me. Nothing dragged, and the flow kept me invested the whole time. The characters felt developed and thought out, and real, the writing was, as always, wonderful.

Definitely a really good read and one I’d recommend.

I’m a big fan of Spangler’s books. Last month I read two on their backlist and particularly enjoyed Edge of Glory. Unfortunately, this was a miss for me. I suspect a lot of people will like it and I get why- the characters are lovely and mature, and there’s clear attraction. For me, though, all the safe space/therapy speak (while well-written and considered) slowed everything down for me and diffused the chemistry. It was all a bit too precious for me. I enjoyed the side characters though (especially Robin!) and will continue to enjoy Spangler’s books.

Short summary: When Tegan decides to uncharacteristically let loose the night before her new job starts, the last thing she expects is for her one-night stand to be her new boss. With everything on the line, can she make it work…and will the team let her stay?

Thanks to the author. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

This is an exceptionally beautiful story, well thought out and brilliantly written. The steamy start with their meeting is fun and also thoughtful, all the talking points they find together. Then when Tegan starts her new job, the discussion between them and Gillian, their collective empathy and the fact they have the emotional strength to discuss everything, is all so thoughtfully handled.
When we learn Tegan’s story, we can see the separation between the classes very acutely, with Tegan’s family openly mocking her choice of training and career. This is very surprising in that her coming out causes a much smaller stir than her choice of schooling.
This is a story centred around communication and consent, as the title states. I love that most things are out in the open, and the women are able to have informed and healthy discussions, both together, and with their colleagues and friends. It’s a breath of fresh air in comparison with so many books where lack of communication is the key to the story - even though those books are also great in their own way. But the openness here makes the story easier to read emotionally; even though there is angst, it is not the miscommunication type, but rather an in-your-face type.
I love the great workplace feeling between Tegan, Brooke, Gillian and Robin, and when Naomi arrives as Tegan’s best friend, she fits right in to the group friend dynamic.
Overall, an exceptional book, with an ending that leaves an opening for another story.

The first half was great, the second half dragged and the therapy talk got a bit much for me. There was too much "i appreciate you saying..." "thank you for accepting my feelings..." "I consent to you..." and too little looks of longing, brief touches and nonverbal communication between the two main characters. So the steam between them from the first half kinda fizzled.

📝Tropes/Themes: Age Gap, One Night to Forever, Forbidden Love, Only One Bed, Workplace Romance, Therapists, Found Family, Mutual Pining, Slow Burn, Dual POV

Tegan was trying to step out of her comfort zone and have fun at the insistence (and somewhat playful blackmailing) of her best friend. Brooke was struggling in ways she couldn’t quite pin down or name and just needed a night out - which was most definitely not her norm. When these two women end up at the same bar one fateful evening, there is an instant connection between them. They both decide to throw caution to the wind for a change and lean into this thing sparking between them. What follows is an incredible, life-altering one-night-stand. They didn’t exchange numbers or last names. That was supposed to be all there was. But 48 hours later both their worlds come crashing down when Tegan walks into the therapy practice where Brooke works as the new junior colleague under Brooke’s best friend/boss’s supervision. AWKWARD! They did nothing wrong, but now the life Tegan has been working toward and just uprooted her life for is in jeopardy. So she does the only thing she knows how to do - fight for her career above all else.

Informed Consent is a one-night turned slowed burn romance full of mutual pining. A connection like that doesn’t just go away, even if you try to ignore it or deny it or shut it down. It’s a bumpy road as Tegan and Brooke figure out how to navigate becoming colleagues and eventually friends while they each still (secretly) pine for the other. But somehow they make it work and begin to develop an even deeper connection in the midst of it.

There was a lot of therapy talk in this book, which might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but as someone who has been in therapy for years I found it both comforting and confronting in all the best ways. Neither Brooke nor Tegan handle everything perfectly in this story. And there are some intense, heartwrenching moments. But I loved watching them both struggle to find their truth and figure out what it is they want - outside the rules and walls and expectations that created an obstacle course for them to work through before they ever even had a chance to explore their connection.

It’s also hard to figure out what you want, let alone what someone else might want, when even the thought of talking about the massive elephant in the room feels like it could turn everything into rubble. I got so frustrated with them at times for not talking to each other and being avoidant and trying to just pretend the elephant wasn’t there. Because ignoring it just made it bigger. And I get it. Sort of. There were a lot of external pressures. And a lot of internal ones too. Sometimes rules help us. They protect us. But sometimes they just keep us boxed in, afraid to take risks, afraid to try. And actively choosing to love someone is one of the riskiest things you can do. You just have to decide if the risk is worth it. And sometimes it takes the risk of losing something to realize it’s worth fighting for.

I truly adore the whole friend group. They each clearly play a role and they were all so different from each other but together create this balanced and wholesome friendship that will leave you wishing you could be part of it. These characters are messy and real and quirky and I loved getting to know all of them. They aren’t afraid to speak the hard truths to each other even as they celebrate the good. Brooke, Gillian, and Robin already have this established bond and it can be hard to bring someone new into the fold when you have such a tight-knit group. But Tegan fits in with them so seamlessly, even in the midst of a less than ideal start to their relationship.

The banter was excellent, the friendship dynamics were top notch, and the slow burn was torturous at times but beyond worth it. If you are looking for a good workplace, age gap romance with heart, heat, and humor - look no further!

From the moment I met Brooke and Tegan they were alive and real. The first conversation they had you could feel the spark and the emotional intelligence behind each set of eyes. Learning they are both therapists goes a long way to explaining that but it’s also so much more than that as well.

Everything about their lives is real and tangible. The experiences of their pasts, the situations they find themselves, the conversations, the friends, the pop culture references, the playful banter. All of it was decidedly seamless and beautiful.

The flow of the story felt like a mere snapshot out of their lives. They existed before the first page and they continue on well past the epilogue.

Each step in the book flowed without pause. The situations made sense and each chapter pulled me to the next one.

Spangler’s writing is pure bliss to read and it hooked me in from the first page until the last.

There is so much heart and need written in these pages and I love the messages we get. From what the characters are going through as well as the therapy sessions we are flies on the wall for.

I loved this book and really appreciated the open conversation the characters had and the relatively low angst that radiated from the page.

And let's not forget the spicy scenes, that were truly magnificent. They were extremely hot but even more wonderful, they were steeped in so much emotion.

Informed consent was a pleasure to read. And will easily be one of those books I return to over and over again.

This was a really fun one! Super insightful at times, introspective, spicy, and interesting. It was funny reading it as someone who’s in the same field and is very familiar with the technical terms and practices that are referenced throughout the book. I did think it lagged in the middle so that brought it down for me feeling like it was dragging for a few chapters. 4.5 stars.

This novel was amazing. A breath of fresh air. It was something very different and in the best way. In many ways this was a normal romance novel; standard silly tropes and wacky situations. Except that it immediately pivoted when the characters reacted to those wacky situations like mature and professional adults instead of rom-com stereotypes. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good rom-com, but it was so incredibly refreshing to see a realistic take on these tropes. The relationship between the protagonists was excellent and very satisfying. The use of proper communication did NOT prevent us from still getting plenty of drama, with all the fixings. 5-stars without any question.

There were a lot of romance tropes in this novel, but only the good ones and none of the bad ones. There was zero miscommunication or annoying elements. There was only one bed.

This novel is about therapists, working in a therapist’s office, and that is very clear at all times. There is communication and boundary setting and all sort of self-aware emotions. There are no silly schemes doomed to fail or problematic plot elements. I can see how some people might not love this approach, but I am NOT one of them because I loved it. This novel model’s healthy relationship dynamics while still giving you the drama and steamy content. This novel is actually realistic and required zero suspension of disbelief.

As I said before, the relationship was simply awesome. The development was organic and believable, and the conclusion was satisfying. The characters, main and side, were all well-developed and delightful. I think I would happily read another dozen novels from this setting/characters.

One question: Are there other novels connected to this one? Who is Sawyer?? I feel like I’m missing something.

Wow. Never expected this to be so good. The synopsis isn't doing it justice. The chemistry, understanding and maturity Brooke and Tegan had from the very beginning was astonishing. I felt their connection right from the start.
With the synopsis, you would think that there would be secrecy and bad decisions, but to my surprise, there was so much transparency between all the characters throughout the book. There was no hiding information, nor was there any deception. Everything and i mean everything was talked and communicated in such a mature way it was refreshing.
Also, not to mention the intriguing plot about therapists. I've never seen a book go in depth about it and write a romance around it. The way the book was able to incorporate their work and romance development at the same time was excellent.
Talking about work, their workplace has such distinct personalities with Gillian and Robin. Noami was also such a great addition outside of it.
Writing was top-notch as well.
Overall, i fucking loved it. That cliffhanger is illegal though. Can't wait for the next book!!!!

ALL THE STARS ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have not read a book this wholly consuming in ages!

I’ve read a very small handful of Rachel’s novels previously, but this book is literal NEXT LEVEL.

Although I read 300+ books per year, I leave less than half a dozen reviews on those, only doing so when something touches my heart in such a sincerely mind blowing way. And THAT, is what happened with this novel.

This love story is legit top tier. This couples beginning, their middle, and all the extraordinary places they went in between.

This was a story of the most WELL EARNED once in a lifetime love, a story of raw and real friendships, and finally, a story of individual growth and individual awareness that had all my hopes hanging in the belief that such a thing could truly rise above the fictional. And that in itself is why we readers adore reading isn’t it? To feel something greater than ourselves? To BELIEVE in something greater than ourselves? But mostly, just for that one strongest of all the feelings: HOPE. And this near 400 pages delivered that so smoothly.

This is sincerity, and honesty and genuineness in every and any form equating with “beautiful”.

The writing was literal perfection, enmeshed with such strong prose that I highlighted half the book.

Thank you for sharing such an emotional and relevant story with us Rachel Spangler. Thank you for sharing such an intimate piece of yourself with all of us complete strangers. It is extremely evident in this writing how much you have given of yourself in this, and in turn delivered something so very powerful. It is what gave me the fortitude to write this review, and with the “hope” that it inspires the masses to read this incredible novel.

PS, a last note for R.S.; thank you for including the open door scenes in this book. Had the door closed on those, this book would not have been as powerful as it was. We needed to see these characters walls down and the sheer unfiltered and raw intimacy and absolute desperation between them in those moments; and wow how you delivered exactly that to them. It’s not about a heat level, or the erotic nature of those scenes. What you wrote between these two, was an intimacy that needs to be written more often, so others can experience that side of relationships more often. It was honest, and true, and felt so very real. It gave these two women a level of depth, that without it, would have felt truly incomplete. Thank you for opening their door during those times. Thank you for including that in their story.

This was a great slow burn. My first instinct is to say it was a great and unique slow burn, but then I think of something like Tempting Olivia. They both have great characters who are clearly attracted to each other and spend a looooong time on the “no we can’t for professional reasons.” Was it too long a time? Hmm. I don’t think so. It was a little agonizing, as the best slow burns are, but not wrong?

I definitely had the thought, what’s the big deal? Can’t these consenting adults who are not in a supervisory relationship and neither of them is a patient carry on dating without the world ending? In many jobs that would be OK? Clearly it was not the case here, but it wasn’t really acknowledged that there was something particular about relationships in this field; they were just playing by a different set of rules.

But, they handled it incredibly openly and bravely. In fact, one of the highlights of the book was how well they could reflect and discuss their own situation and feelings, even when it was awkward. OK, they didn’t always fully recognize their own feelings, but what they were aware of, they could discuss. So there was no hiding or lack of communication here! On the other hand, when a relationship therapist discusses a relationship with another therapist, they apparently do kind of analyze it to death, lol. Sometimes it felt like they weren’t allowed to feel a feeling unless it had been over-analyzed first. :) I mean, I exaggerate, but there was definitely much more analysis than usual!

At the end, though, I looked back and tried to decide how it would go if they were just allowed to get together at the start. And… I don’t think it would have been better. All the dancing around each other gave them the chance to get to know each other much better than just their instant chemistry, and that not only was better for them, it proved to be a more significant attraction in the end, which was lovely. Plus I do love a good slow burn.

So all in all, this was wonderful. I’ll have to let it sit for a bit to figure out whether I liked or disliked the extent of the relationship analysis, but that part was certainly unique. The characters, plus their friends and coworkers, were great, the slow burn was great, and it sure planted a sequel hook right there at the end. I’ll be happy to have it!
