A HEART THAT YEARNS FOR MILORD

Chen Xing has finally arrived in Chang’an and is to meet the Great Chanyu, a man rumored to be so beautiful and adorned in finery that he’s beset by marriage proposals. So why is Xiang Shu sitting on the Great Chanyu’s throne?

Meanwhile, rumor has it that His Majesty, Fu Jian, will soon enact a decree that any Hu to marry a Han will receive a stipend. What’s more, anyone could become a wife, be they woman or man. But those feelings of love are not exactly reciprocal, as a plot to take down His Majesty is afoot, and a mysterious assassin leaves the Hu Dynasty scrambling for answers. But danger or not, Xiang Shu remains conspicuously hesitant to make himself Chen Xing’s protector.

Questions abound as Chen Xing, Xiang Shu, and Feng Qianjun fall deeper into a tangled web of secrets. Will the inscrutable Great Chanyu finally say ‘I do’ to Chen Xing’s proposal? Will Chen Xing uncover clues to the Mara case? And can the three men quell the winds of revolt?

MINOR SPOILERS

I'm disappointed and annoyed with this volume.

7 Seas have done a half- *assed job of putting this together. I can't believe they went to print with this. I've read it online before and don't remember it being in this order.

I'm not surprised readers are finding it confusing.

For example, Chen Xing (MC) finds out who caused the death of his parents. But then on the opposite page we jump back in time to him and Xiang Shu (ML) in the bath after the end of their road trip. It made zero sense.

I won't be carrying on with the manhua. I wouldn't recommend it to others anymore either which is sad because the art is pretty and I like the story itself.

On a side note, the full manhua is going to be released by 7 Seas for those who are worrying it will be incomplete. I google'd how many volumes the manhua of this would be and came across the translators page who said they are working with 7 seas with finishing it all off.

I’m curious for those who haven’t read the novel yet (or Tianbao Fuyao) if reading the manhua first is confusing. I absolutely love seeing how this story is being told in the manhua with such gorgeous art but I had to refer to the novel a few times to actually remember what was happening 🥴

I would never have understood the Solo Leveling manhwa if I hadn’t read the novels first. I think that’s because I’m newer to reading manhua and manga so I often feel like I am missing details the novel provides.

This gets me so excited for the novel coming this May! I love seeing the connections between Tianbao and Dinghai 💜

Second volume plunges Chen Xing in the middle of political machinations and palace intrigue of Chang’an. All he wants is to locate the headquarters of the last exorcists, but he accidentally stumbles into a den of conspirators. They have a magical artifact full of malice that causes him and Xiang Shu, his reluctant protector, great trouble.

There are some comical moments as well. Chen Xing is pursued left and right by people wanting to marry him, and they’re all men. Even the emperor is determined to marry him off to a man. Xiang Shu faces a similar predicament, only many times over, because it turns out he’s Great Chanyu, a man of great importance. No wonder he isn’t interested in becoming Chen Xing’s protector. But if you’re looking for a romance, it’s not happening here. At least not yet.

This wasn’t quite as good as the first volume and the fast pace with which new characters and political issues were brought up was confusing, especially since all characters look exactly the same. But matters got out of Chen Xing’s and Xiang Shu’s hands rather badly towards the end. I have to read on to find out how they clear the situation they find themselves in.

Don’t get attached to the dog!

"The dead cannot return to life. I have spent many years studying in seclusion, and I have long since come to terms with that."

description

Reading Dinghai Fusheng Records Vol. 2 in manhua format was an interesting experience, especially since I had read this part of the story online before. However, I found myself more confused this time around, even though I don’t remember struggling with it as much on my first read. The pacing felt a little disjointed, making it difficult to fully grasp certain events and their significance. That being said, the story is still compelling, and being at the front row of a brewing rebellion adds a thrilling layer of tension that kept me engaged.

The artwork is undeniably detailed and well-executed, and I’m sure many readers will love it. However, while I can appreciate the skill behind it, the art style just isn’t quite to my personal taste. Some panels felt a bit too busy for me, which contributed to my confusion while reading. Still, the dramatic moments were illustrated with intensity, and the expressions on the characters’ faces did a great job conveying their emotions. Fans of visually intricate manhua will likely enjoy this volume from an artistic standpoint.

Despite my mixed feelings, I’m still looking forward to experiencing Dinghai Fusheng Records in novel format. There’s so much depth to this story, and I feel like reading the original text will provide the clarity I need to fully appreciate it. While this volume didn’t fully click with me, it’s still a solid adaptation that will likely resonate with fans who enjoy detailed world-building and historical fantasy.

Went from a 5 star first volume to quite honestly more of a 2 star second installment, but I'm bumping it to three because I'm hoping the novel is less choppy and will make this story make more sense.

I believe the manhua got cancelled, and I'm wondering if it just turned out to be too unwieldy to adapt, and that's why the quality started dipping so quickly. Even the art didn't seem as nice this time around? A bit disappointing, but I do still like the characters, and there were some good moments in this one.

One of the absolute weirdest things almost feels like a printing mistake, although it can't be. At the end of an early chapter, we have Chen Xing trying to unlock a secret vault of exorcism records, which pauses mid-unlocking for Feng Qianjun's older brother to tell Chen Xing that his old friend Yuwen Xin had killed Chen Xing's parents...and then we cut to a 6 page sultry scene of Chen Xing and Xiang Shu bathing together...and then the next chapter begins with Chen Xing's reaction to the news about Yuwen Xin and his family.

Yes, it's that confusing! Those were nice pages but ??? why were they there ??? did that scene even happen in the storyline or did we just slip into a random dream sequence ???

Plus it was confusing whether the door had been unlocked at any point during this conversation, which I guess it wasn't, because suddenly they're leaving that room and Feng Qianjun is showing up to tell Chen Xing that Xiang Shu is there threatening everyone and trying to find him, which...why? He didn't seem terribly concerned at any other point while Chen Xing was wandering around doing his thing.

Then they go into a mirror world, and then we find out the princess is a villain, and she AND the dog get stabbed, and I don't know if the dog is okay, and then the volume ends and I have to wait for either the next volume or the danmei.

So...yeah. This was not great. But I do still like the overall storyline, or I think I do, even though it's wildly confusing at this point.

The one time I decided to buy a physical copy, I ended up not enjoying the manhua. Feels like my wallet's curse 😭

The story was slightly confusing or at least the order it was published in, idk, I may have to read it again to get a better sense or I am going to wait for the novel.

Glad to see I wasn’t the only one confused by the random bath scene. But I still enjoyed the story & artwork, and I don’t feel *completely* lost. I am, however, wondering why they decided to release the manhua before the novels. Maybe I should read the novel before continuing on with the manhua?

Either way, I’m enjoying this one.

I genuinely love seeing this adaptation. Going through an English fan translation of Dinghai has been a good experience and I'm so thankful for it, but admittedly a lot of the scenes that this particular volume of manhua covers were moments I had some difficulty visualizing while reading the fan translation. Getting to see all these action sequences visually, with the accompanying motion and the intended energy is honestly exactly what I needed! I have difficulty picking favorite danmei series but I'm starting to think Dinghai might end up being one of my big faves as a result!

Up to chapter 70.
Wow, getting more interesting. Also, expanding on the world-building with the move to the north. Although on character level, there is a very annoying addition.

Note: MoShang vibes are getting stronger 👀 (yes, I see SVSSS everywhere)

This graphic novel drops you in the middle of the action and doesn’t let up. Chen Xing is our main point of view character, and he is clearly out of his depth. While I’m certain that there are details I’m missing because I’m not familiar with Chinese history, it doesn’t make too much of a difference to the story. I really liked the art style and found that I couldn’t put it down, finishing the first two volumes in about three days. This is my favorite kind of historical fantasy: great plot, pretty costumes, and intriguing characters.

Chen Xing is a little too naïve for me at times, but it does work well for his character and gives a reason for a lot of the exposition. The story has been really unpredictable which is something I enjoy. Far too often I can easily predict where a story is going, and I like to be surprised. I do wish we got a little more about Xiang Shu, but hopefully as the story continues we’ll get more details about him. While the second volume does give us a little more of his background, there are still a lot of questions, and we don’t get as much access to his internal thoughts as we do with Chen Xing.

It’ll be interesting to see where both the story goes and how Chen Xing and Xiang Shu’s relationship continues to develop. I’m really looking forward to the next installment of the comic. I’m also planning on picking up the book that the comic is based on. Four out of five stars.

What on earth is this obsession with matchmaking?! It's understandable why Xiang Shu is so cautious, but Chen Xing doesn't seem to have any clue other than the very forthright discussions that take place. Xiang Shu will most likely need some reason to negate those 16 "contracts" though given he didn't really agree to anything. Oddly, he doesn't seem to say anything whenever it is pointed out that Chen Xing could end up marrying him almost by default of their positions from the sound of things, leaving Chen Xing to puzzle things out and remind everyone that they really aren't that close.... yet. This mirror world takes things for an interesting turn, and even gets the pair working together again, even if rather begrudgingly. Truthfully though, Xiang Shu has fairly consistently been the one saving Cheng Xing while he somehow manages to stumble on whatever they need thanks to his "luck." Those tides may have turned with this latest encounter with the princess and all this resentful qui. The phrase "out of the frying pan and into the fire" comes to mind.

A satisfying read, although the bath scene was totally random. I almost feel like they inserted it into the wrong part of the manhua, because the MC was in convo with the rebellion leader and then it flashes to the baths, and then goes back to the convo with the rebellion leader/older brother like nothing happened. It was super random. Also, I don't understand the princess's motive for trying to assasinate the MC. The issue with reading the manhua vs the book is that it's much harder to understand character's motivations for their actions.

I love the comedy 🤣
60% of this volume the emperor was excited to enforce the new edict of gay marriage and everyone tries to marry the MC off to some dudes, instantly assuming he's gay XD
Ps: Lil puppy Xiang Shu saving them all was so cute ❤️ I swear if next volume I don't see his furry apple butt jumping around I quit reading!
How could they even bring themselves to draw a stabbing panel of this puppy!?

3.5 stars! I'm still very disjointed by that one scene and it really threw me off a lot. I'm still a little loss and confused but I hope the first volume would help clear it up when that gets released. This seems very promising so far.

As with volume 1, the gorgeous artwork justifies the purchase all on its own. This time I also found the plot easier to follow. Again, though, the ending leaves a lot to be resolved in vol. 3.
