"Who taught you this? To want what does not want you?"
Emmett Easton is as unpredictable as he is gorgeous. He's silent. Ruthless. Calculated. And not mine. I've made it a point to forget him and let him go, meanwhile he's made it a mission to worsen my wounds. Now I'm begging myself not to fall completely apart. The same way I've silently begged for his heartbeats to stay intact... for me. But there's a truth to unrequited love that we never face. What doesn't want you has the power to own you.
Ivy Irving is everyone's cheerleader. But she's fake. Deceptive. And a glutton for punishment. She unexpectedly became a crucial part of a plan. But letting her mess me up was never part of it. She hates me now, but I don't care. I estimate that I have about four seasons left, and I'll spend each one inflating that hate. Maybe letting her go will be easier that way. But when she looks at me, she shatters all common sense and rationality. It's time to take the poison and sever the ties.
Poison Aches is Emmett & Ivy's story from the Westbrook Blues series. It can be read as its own story but I highly recommend following the series for better understanding of this world. This is a mature, new adult romance with dark content that some readers might find triggering.
Thandie is a simple millennial who’s just trying to make avocado toast at two am and finish the next novel that she hopes you’ll fall in love with all while she tries to secure her entire life in one go.
But these are all lies! She really spends an insane amount of time on Instagram, stalking Beyonce for the next album release which she swears might drop at anytime. Sorry to that lady.
very much feel like the author just changed the characters for this book, because in the last five books i didn’t notice any animosity between Emmett and ivy? like when was Emmett ever a dick to her….
My oh my. This is going to be a difficult review for me to write today.
I want to start by saying that the Westbrook Blues series is my favourite series of all time. I’ve re-read, swooned and fell in love with all of the characters. I think of them daily and have done since I first read the series almost three years ago.
Not only was this my most highly anticipated book of the year, but I’ve been dying for this couple since book 2, Vicious Hate.
I hate to say it, but I’m low-key kind of disappointed, annoyed and simultaneously confused. I think the annoyance stems from the confusion to be honest. There are a number of reasons as to why I feel this way. I’ll list of my cons first and then go through the pros.
To start, what the hell is this timeline? Suddenly we’ve jumped 10 years from books 1-3 to now? (Excluding book 3’s epilogue) I would’ve understood if the characters were around 23-25, but how are they 27-30? And 30? Why was Emmett suddenly three years older than Ivy and the other characters? He’s always been the same age as them, went to school with them. The only age difference we’ve had previously was Alex, and he was only one year older. I don’t understand why it’s being changed this far into the series, I spent more time focusing on how old everybody was and the continuity of which point they are at in their lives as opposed to the plot and the couple. And speaking of age, there was a kid revealed at the end of book 3 who was said to be 7 months old, which would make them 9 or 10……..why are we being told that they are only just starting to talk…….I don’t get it. It ruins the continuity.
Secondly, this is something I noticed when I hit the second couple, especially in their second book, but I’ve clocked the same issue again; the repetitiveness. There was an abnormal amount of similarities between couple one and couple two, and now couple three. It just feels like rinse and repeat, which is a shame because each couple deserves their own UNIQUE plot, experiences, backstory etc.
We’ve now had 3 sets of twins……why? One was enough. Just because something worked once doesn’t mean you have to keep doing it, don’t oversaturate and destroy all of the hard work you’ve put in. Additionally, we’ve also now had 3 long lost siblings, and 2 of 3 long lost siblings were said to be dead. Please write something different! Mpofu is NOT a bad author, like I said, I loved books 1-3, but just because you did something good once, doesn’t mean you should keep doing it!
In terms of continuity, we had a big change that was hinted at in book 4, and now more established in books 5 and 6, and that is this ‘mafia & mob’ plot line. It’s painfully obvious that it’s been pulled in at the last minute. It’s been said that ALL of the boys of Westbrook Blues are highly trained and have been for YEARS, but yet, we had no hint of this in books 1-3, and we had Alex’s pov enough then. I almost wish Mpofu had written a book separate to Westbrook Blues that was mafia focused to keep the series in its true form. And I would’ve read it. I’ll read anything and everything this author writes.
There were far too many new characters introduced and we didn’t see enough of the ones we know and love. And none of the new characters were positive influences really or characters that we are going to grow to be obsessed with. It would’ve been nice to see more of the group back together. Even if most of them do kinda hate eachother 👀.
Now let’s get onto Emmett. He is completely different. I know that was partially intentional because he’s had this secret part of him that he’s been indoctrinated to keep secret his entire life…..but even his behaviour, the way he now speaks to his ‘friends’ is completely changed. I’ve been looking forward to being back in his pov since we heard from him in Frosty Blues, but I was underwhelmed. He was far too monotonous, posed as stoicism and mystery, and sometimes he was just plain annoying.
There was a SERIOUS lack of chemistry between Ivy and Emmett……in this book. They’ve had insane chemistry throughout the entire series. Why has their book fallen flat 🫠. To be honest, it was Emmett that let him down. All we got from him was lust, and even then it was sparse.
The ‘climax’ scenes felt very rushed and out of the blue (no pun intended), so they didn’t hit.
I don’t know if there was an editor, but one or multiple was necessary. There’s no shame around it! Every author needs one, no is perfect and we all make mistakes. There were multiple grammatical mistakes (a big one I kept seeing was advice instead of advise) and the dialogue at times was too cheesy or repetitive, and I have looked past that over the series, but at this point, surely it should be an issue that was ironed out, no?
I know I’ve ranted A LOT, but it’s all out of love, so let’s get onto the positives!
Ivy, sweet Ivy. I have really loved her throughout the entirety of the series and that love hasn’t waned in Poison Aches. I will say her self deprecation was gradually becoming tedious, but she has had one of the best character development if not the best character development of all of our main characters. It was actually really interesting to see what her relationship with Samuel , aka Spider, was like behind closed doors.
Speaking of Samuel (who has always been an intriguing character for me), he was a big standout in Poison aches for me. He was a large part of the ending, and in my opinion, the ending carried the entire book. The plot the whole way through was kind of stagnant. The Samuel plot line saved it.
I’m amiss to see where we go from here. I’m dying to find out what Samuel was up to and where he is now. I hope we see Ivy back with the group in Westbrook Blues, it’s where I’ve always loved her. And fingers crossed 🤞, Emmett gets a lobotomy!!!!
YAY!! Emmett & Ivy's story is here!! I don't know where to start... but I'll tell you to have loads of tissues, munchies, drink of choice, and to buckle in, cause you're in for a rollercoaster ride full of gripping dark angst, secrets, lies, suspense, twists, heartache, which ends in a cliffhanger!!
We've seen the interactions between these two in the previous books, now let's see what's going on there and hopefully this is a spoiler free review...
Ivy Irving and Emmett Easton have known each other since they were kids, growing up in Westbrook Blues and having the same friends. But there's more to how they first met. Their friends don't know how far back they go.
Ivy wants to find out why her parents abandoned her and her older brother, Samuel, their Grandparents raised them. Ivy suffers from anxiety, she has a habit of spacing out, thinking too much, lives in her head she hides herself, she's convinced she's unlovable, unwanted, cause why would a woman who birthed her abandon her at birth, discarding her just like that. She has many issues connected to her abandonment, Samuel (Spider), her older brother, has told her countless times to stop wasting her time searching for the people who didn't want them, and to be thankful that being brought up by their Grandparents is enough.
Emmett, cold, strong silent, deadly type, heir to the Easton Family, born with a congenital heart disorder, since rumours are circulating the Family that something's wrong with him, they think he's not got what it takes to become Boss, so he works twice as hard, making sure he knows everything about everyone, he needs to be at least a few steps ahead in this game. He's been looking into his mother's sudden disappearance, since his father, Grandfather and Uncles don't seem interested, she was the first born, she was heir to the family, which is for now him, or until he gets pushed out by his power hungry Uncles and cousins. His Grandfather wants the Pheonix Corp, which George and Astraea's father is the head of.
Ivy irritates Emmett, he sees right through her false bravado. He's even rejected her. But still watches her every move. Ivy's loved Emmett since they met, she wants to be his friend, she's sees him, she's known of his health issues and kept quiet. When Emmett rejects her, sayng that he'll never love her back, she decides to move on, looking the other way when they're with their friends. She's so desperate to become a Doctor like her Grampa, she does something that could get her into serious trouble. But also has leads on who her father is. What will she find out? What has she just walked into? Are both her and Emmett pawns in this game? What other secrets are they going to uncover?
It was great being back in the world of Westbrook Blues. There's so much going on. Astraea and Alex (Ace) are settled in married life and parenthood, baby Knight is adorable. Noah and Kim are still strong. George and Spider (Samuel) are still present.
Well done Thandie, you've done it again, excellent read, looking forward to what's coming.
I feel like I have been waiting for Ivy and Emmets's book for ages. I loved their connection since the previous books and could not wait to finally read their story.
Ivy surprised me in this book, she is not just someone who is down-to-earth and the most empathetic character in the series, she is strong and will do anything to get answers. I liked that Ivy was willing to move on after Emmett's rejection and began to focus on herself. She wants answers about her past and wants to move on with the baggage of her past, always haunting her. Her mission, no matter how pure, ends up not going as planned and she has to face the reality of her decisions.
Emmet does not have much time left and needs to succeed. The only thing he wants is to know what happened to his Mother. When finds out about Ivy's connection and now he is going to make sure she suffers for hiding the truth.
Ivy and Emmet's connection in this book was not as strong as in other books and I am disappointed. The constant push and pull the other books had, this book did not deliver. The characters as individuals were relatable and entertaining, but as a couple, they did not have the spark I was hoping for.
This has been a long awaited story for me. I love this series and have been dying to read Ivy and Emmett’s story from the start.
Ivy, I love her. My heart breaks for her, but she is strong and you know she is going to come out stronger than ever. Emmett, I have some mixed emotions about, especially with that ending. I am hoping that maybe he can redeem himself in the next book.
Ivy and Emmett have an interesting friendship and there is a one sided crush from Ivy. I didn’t feel any chemistry between them, everything felt very frenemies. I am hoping there is more of a romantic connection as their story continues.
There were parts of the story that felt a little slow for me and it took me a little longer than normal to read. But overall, I did enjoy their story and I hope the second part of it comes out sooner than later.
I would highly suggest starting from the beginning with Reckless Hate. While, that book is a different couple I feel like this series is just one you need to read to fully understand a lot of what happens in this book.
If you’re looking frenemies to lovers, dark romance check this one out.
Why am I ever surprised of the rollercoaster that Thandie takes us on? I was not prepared for this book even after waiting 2 years. Even though we saw Ivy and Emmett throughout the first 5 books, we really didn’t know them did we…..? I feel so hard for Ivy. The girls always get destroyed in these books and it never gets easier. I honestly think reading Ivy has been the hardest. I feel so bad for her and there’s never any reprieve. She never gets a break and the feeling of anguish for her made it hard to breathe at points while reading. I just want someone to love her openly. Emmett can kick rocks. I’m so mad at him! I truly didn’t know the depth of his character until this book. He absolutely shocked me in all different ways. I’m still processing all that he is. All that to say, I finished this in less than 24 hours and I couldn’t put it down. I love the ride that is the Westbrook Blues boys and I love the writing. The plot twists are always a shock and hard to process but they make it worth the read!
I have been waiting and waiting for Emmett and Ivy's story. Both characters that I love very much. However, I just don't feel like this story is what we saw in the past books. Yeah, maybe they were hidden from us, yada yada yada, but just not what I expected.
First Emmett. I'm not understanding how the author could insinuate that his friendship with the Blues Boys was anything less that genuine? Am I the only one that read it that way?? That was devastating to me. Especially reading their childhood memories in earlier books. I really disliked that there was no connection there in this book.
Ivy we really didn't know much about so I'm really not so bothered by her characters evolvement.
Anyways, I felt like I was reading a completely different world than my Blues Boys. :(
This is the year of my favorite authors returning and I am loving it!!!! Poison Aches has been long waited but what comes to mind is this quote: "Never let a man tell you he doesn't want you more than once." Emm has told ivy 5,672 times in the most cruelest and she still was so naive. Another quote that comes to mind is " A hard head, makes for a soft behind." Without giving anything anyway Ivy being so naive when the truth has been displayed in front of her for years and she still chose to be naive and just child like I wanted to come into book and just shake her!!! She gets no sympathy, but I do hope she learns to stand tall in book 2. Now Emmett the young man is full of contradictions, but I can't wait to see how it ends for him in book 2.
This was a very interesting read where Emmett pushes and pushes Ivy away many times in the harshest of ways too, but Ivy just can’t seem to let her crush go no matter how mean he can be. Ivy was sweet and in some ways naive that it hindered her when it came to Emmett and without giving anything away I’m curious to see how this all plays out between them because Emmett is enigmatic in some ways that you may not know what he will do next. My heart hurts for her in some ways and in other ways I wanted to shake her silly. This was fun and I can’t wait to see what the next book has in store for them, but I know what I’m hoping for.
I have been eagerly awaiting Ivy and Emmett's story ever since there was an inkling of something something between them. I devoured this book. It provided the backdrop to what I'm hoping will be the meat of the story. I can't wait for book 2 and to get to the heart of the matter!
