Book 2 of 3: Slayton Thrillers 🎧Listening Length = 8 hours and 28 minutes
A “dark and twisty” tale (Teresa Driscoll, author of I Am Watching You) with over 1,000 five-star ratings: When strange noises from the woods begin to haunt the town of Slayton at night — leading to a couple dead and their children missing — Detective Sarah Noble digs into the eerie case to find out the dark truth.
Detective Sarah Noble investigates a dark case in the town of Slayton. It began with the whispers. In the woods, in the park, and always at night. Then they came into town, down dark alleys, and in the shadows. Before long there was a knock on the door. When the couple were found dead with their faces frozen in horror, the black-eyed children were nowhere to be seen. Until it happened again. Detective Sarah Noble will need all her intuition - and some help from young Elliott Carter - to crack a case where nothing is as it seems. A gripping new Slayton thriller with a shocking twist, from bestselling author Caroline Mitchell. Perfect for fans of Alex North and Cara Hunter. The Detective Sarah Noble thrillers can be read as standalones, or in any order.
New York Times, USA Today, Washington Post and International #1 Bestselling Author. Shortlisted by the International Thriller Awards for best ebook 2017 and the Killer Nashville Best Police Procedural 2018.
The town of Slayton is creepy AF! I would never want to live there.
This is book #2 in the Slayton Thriller Series, and this time around, the townspeople are terrified of the rumors regarding black-eyed children who show up on residential doorsteps and kill the occupants. Detective Sarah Noble is on the case again, and she can only agree that whatever is going on is morbid…but normal for the town.
As the death count rises and things get stranger, the whispers heard at night get louder. Nobody in town is safe…especially if they open their front door.
This is such an atmospheric read that would be perfect for Fall/Halloween. While I wasn’t scared per se, I did find many moments creepy. This is a moody, dark thriller that oozes with tension and compelling characters.
I also enjoyed the first book in the series, The Midnight Man, but the ending of that one didn’t do it for me. This was an improvement from start to end, and I’m definitely looking forward to more of Sarah and her macabre little town.
Thank you to Embla Books and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Expected Publication Date: 7/28/22.
This was supposed to be creepy with supernatural elements - ghostly, black eyed children and whispers in the night! The children appeared at the door of the elderly Rosemary and her wheelchair bound son, Geoffrey, one night pitifully asking for help. Rosemary had the presence of mind to ring a neighbour about them while in the kitchen making them a hot chocolate drink. But, when the neighbour hears nothing further and the police call around, they find the two of them brutally stabbed to death and their eyes removed.
This really sets tongues wagging in Slayton and soon black eyed children are appearing everywhere. It soon becomes apparent that the children are the ghosts of 12 year old Mercy and her 6 year old brother, Mickey, who disappeared 25 years ago. They have not been able to rest because those involved with their deaths have not faced justice yet. There is, of course, more death to come.
DC Sarah Noble is attached to the Major Incident Team investigating these deaths as she is from Slayton and knows a lot of the locals.
I knew this was a book 2 before getting into it and I thought maybe I haven’t missed too much but now, in hindsight, I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the first book. There are many references to a previous case and there is not enough background given in this one to put everything into context.
The main protagonist, Sarah, is around 40 years old but comes across as much younger and inexperienced and lacking confidence. I didn’t like her much, she seemed so weak! I also did not find the book at all creepy, in fact the supernatural elements seemed to be pretty lame, juvenile even! They just didn’t work for me. I like a lot of Caroline Mitchell’s crime thrillers but this was not a thriller by any stretch of the imagination. Which is a pity as she is an excellent writer. Unfortunately I can only give 2.5 stars rounded up - because it is Caroline Mitchell. Many thanks to Netgalley and Embla Books for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.
It began with whispers in the night. The Black-eyed children are out there and then they are at your door, knocking and wanting to come in! Here's some advice, never open your door, especially at night when strangers come knocking.
When Mrs. Simmons and her adult son are found viciously murdered, the children who knocked on their door are nowhere to be seen. Mrs. Simmons felt bad for them, thought they were lost, welcomed them inside, offered them hot chocolate...…
Detective Sarah Noble was doing a welfare check after a call was received from a concerned neighbor, and found the grisly scene, hoping this will be the last, but it won’t. It’s only the beginning!
Reader are first introduced to Sarah and many of the characters in this book in The Midnight Man, the first book in the series. It was so nice to see how many of them were doing after the events of the last book. If you have not read that book, I highly recommend it.
As Sarah and her department begin to investigate the murders in this book, it is very clear that there is more (so much more) going on here.
For me this book was not scary or frightening but was creepy and sinister. Plus, they eye stuff, ack! I’m not quite sure why no one has moved out of Slayton, but the residents all seem to know and understand that there is evil here. Evil that will do anything to keep its secrets.
Caroline Mitchell wowed me (and won a fan) with her first book in the series and she continued to impress me with this book. Her use of tension, dread, and atmosphere added to the sinister and creepy vibe of the book. She has me looking forward to the next book in the series!
Tense, sinister, atmospheric, and dark!

Thank you to Embla Books and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
The second book in the Slayton Thrillers series again features police officer Sarah Noble, her colleagues, friends and people of the town.
There are night whispers in the town. People speak about two little children that come at night: a girl and a boy. Who are they and what do they want? Are they related to the tragedy that took place 25 years ago when a sister and a brother from the Romany family went missing one night? Are they a sign that something terrible will happen soon in the town?
Soon Slayton is shocked by the gruesome murders that take place in the town. Sarah is not looking forward to being part of the investigation team, but they need her knowledge of people that live here and she, as in the first book The Midnight Man, is using her friend's psychic son, Ellie, to help in the investigation.
The book is a bit spooky but is full of twists and unexpected discoveries and is worth reading and enjoying.
I do love a Caroline Mitchell book! this is the second book in the Slayton series featuring police officer Sarah Noble. The Midnight Man a was creepy, page turner and The Night Whispers had me curled up under my blankets hearing every bump in the night.
Why would you want to live in the small town of Slayton? With it’s dark past, and creepy old house standing abandoned as a reminder to all. And now there is the fear of the ghostly, black eyed children!! An elderly woman and her wheelchair bound son are brutally murdered in their home. Sarah is sent to do a welfare check after a neighbour calls in worried about them. What she find is the stuff of nightmares. The victims have had their eyes removed and there is blood everywhere. Sarah find herself on the team to investigate. The town is once again on edge, scared that they will be next.
It really was a chilling story with some supernatural elements in there was well. I really like Elliot and his friendship with Sarah.
Thank you to Embla Books and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. Published July 28th.

This is the second book in the ‘Slayton Thriller’ series by one of my favourite authors Caroline Mitchell.
Detective Sarah Noble returns to investigate another dark case that is sending shockwaves through Slayton. A couple are discovered dead with their faces frozen in horror; there is talk of children with dark eyes who bring death wherever they go.
This is more of a scary dark story than my usual read but still found it very entertaining and a thrilling read. Well written and very atmospheric which left me chills running down my spine.
This book is sure to thrill the authors readers and leave them wanting more.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Embla books for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
THE NIGHT WHISPERS is book 2 in the chilling Slayton Thrillers featuring police officer Sarah Noble. by bestselling author Caroline Mitchell. I would highly recommend you read in order as a lot of what happened in the previous novel, The Midnight Man, is refenced in this one.
The books in the Slayton Thriller Series Include: 1. The Midnight Man (2021) 2. The Night Whispers (2022)
This is my review of The Night Whispers.
It began with the whispers. In the woods, in the park, and always at night. Then they came into town, down dark alleys, and in the shadows. Before long, the black-eyed children were moving closer, until finally there was a knock on the door.
Detective Sarah Noble returns to investigate another dark case in the town of Slayton. It's a case of an elderly lady and her son that are found murdered in their home and the crime scene is horrifying. The victims have had their eyes removed and there is blood everywhere. Two detectives are sent to investigate.
This well written page turner, compelling dark chilling plot with some supernatural elements and good engaging characters, make this a read you will struggle to put down… a perfect read for Halloween. Another winner from author Caroline Mitchell!
Many thanks to the author and Embla Books and NetGalley for my digital copy.
Detective Sarah Noble is back investigating a spine chilling case in the town of Slayton. Beware the children whose eyes are black as night, their whispers slowly build until the night there’s a knock on your door! Forget the innocent children’s game of “knock out ginger” it’s more of a case of “run for your life, it means death is approaching” If there’s one thing that’s guaranteed to give me the heebie-jeebies it’s creepy children especially when there’s more than a hint of the supernatural thrown in. Well, I have to say The Night Whispers freaked me out from the opening chapter. The pages crackle with menace. I felt compelled to check the locks on the front door, just in case!
The claustrophobic town of Slayton is the perfect setting for this book. It’s shrouded in buried secrets and urban myths that give the town a sense of malevolence that simmers and bubbles away below the surface. Detective Sarah Noble, like many fictional Detectives has her fair share of demons, but it’s hardly surprising when you learn more about her horrifying backstory, it’s great to see her character growing, as the series progresses. One thing I love about this series has to be the characters who live in Slayton. They’re such a quirky bunch. Some you will love, others you will hate, but each has a part to play.
I’m rather partial to a gruesome crime scene in fiction, that is! Caroline Mitchell’s descriptive crimes scenes aren’t for the fainthearted, but they add to the creeping sense of dread as the plot progresses. I loved the fact that you're never sure if this is a crime thriller, horror or supernatural read. Are the black- children just a ghostly story passed down through the generations? Or is there something far more sinister at play? So many questions for Sarah Noble and her team to get their head around, as to the answers. Well, you will just have to read the book to find out! I loved The Night Whispers. It’s superbly chilling and delightfully creepy, a cracking read that I would happily recommend.
The series is growing on me. 3.5 stars rounded up.
Instalment Two brings the horrors of living in Slayton to the fore once again. As I was anticipating the paranormal aspect I think I lent into it a bit more and judged the logic less.
Aspects of gothic fiction, crime but not really a horror as the blurb would like you to believe. The one bug-bear I still have is the weakness of the protagonist. Sarah Noble comes across as a young, naive, and incompetent character, but I may be wrong here) she’s in her early 40s? I’ll persevere with her.
Audiobook is good but the narrator’s laugh/giggle drives me nuts!
This is the second book in the Slayton series. An elderly lady and her son are found murdered in their home and the crime scene is horrific. Two detectives are sent to investigate. A very creepy tale that was frightening in parts. Thank you to NetGalley and Embla Books for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
Sarah Noble, a detective constable in Slayton, a fictional town where the book is set, makes a horrific discovery when she is asked to call in on an old lady and her disabled son who live in her road. The neighbour, who was out the night before, had found an answerphone message from the old lady referring to some strange children who had just arrived asking for help, but cannot get any answer next morning either to a phone call or when she goes round to the house, so had phoned the police in case something was wrong. What Sarah discovers is so gruesome it sparks off a town-wide panic about deadly children with black eyes, a panic whipped up by a self-serving Youtube 'expert'. Meanwhile, Elliott, a young boy who is psychic, is being visited by two ghostly children who ask him to help them.
I gathered while reading this that there was a previous book where a murderer called the Midnight Man was involved, and that Elliott was somehow instrumental in solving that case. His mother is Sarah's best friend, and another friend of theirs is Elsie, a romance writer originally from the southern states of the USA. There are quite a few references to Elsie's weight which might upset some readers, and Sarah's choice of a present to her at the end of the story was pretty questionable.
The story tries for a supernatural/psychic twist. Elliott's teacher has the same ability to "see dead people" but is able to control it and eventually helps him block his 'gift' also. Sarah herself has some kind of psychic ability as witnessed by the 'buzzing' she experiences which occurs in a key scene late in the book. For me, this element didn't gell altogether successfully with a police procedural.
The writing was fairly good, some of the secondary characters such as the traveller Noah are quite well realised, but there are a lot of characters who are name checked and it does get a bit confusing by the end with so many names involved. I assume that one of the villains involved will return to cause more trouble but I wasn't gripped, didn't find it all that spooky and don't think I will bother with any more of this series. So a middle of the road 3 star rating from me.
This is book 2 of 3 in the Slayton Thrillers. They all centre around a detective Sarah Noble. She is the main character and Slayton is a town that strange things happen. Sarah is no stranger to the troubles, as a local resident in Slayton she has not escaped her own traumas.
In this instalment it starts with whispers. These whispers were worse at night but with the whispers horrific crimes happen.. The result being grotesque murders and talks of black eyed children with very pale chalk white faces.
Sarah has someone in her circle who has dreams and feelings that give him insight into the darkness of the cases. This person she must do her utmost to protect.
This case sees her slowly coming into her own. But, she has a ways to go… Will she be prepared to witness someone she admires falling from grace? Stayton is a town where there are many secrets. Some are even prepared to kill in order to keep them buried.
Totally engaging even though at times Sarah irritated me, especially when she goes off on leads and puts herself in danger with no backup plan….
The Night Whispers by Caroline Mitchell is the second in the Slayton Thriller series.
Series Background: (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books) Slayton is a town that is seemingly run by bigwig Simon Irving, and he has powerful friends. But Slayton is a little strange, where the "odd" is the normal, where the myths and legends seem to mingle with the everyday life. Detective Sarah Noble owns Blackhall Manor, but Irving wants it. She is determined he won't get it. Her boss Gabby is becoming a friend, and their boss is Bernard, a DI who is retiring. Sarah's best friend Maggie has a child who "knows" things. Elliott's dreams terrify him, but he helps Sarah solve crimes, and there is usually something strange going on in Slayton. Her other friend Elsie is a romance author, and her natural nosiness also helps Sarah.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions) Elliott is having nightmares again. Two children, Mercy and Mikey appear to him and want his help. But they are rather scary. They have black eyes.
Rosemary opens the door to two young children. The next morning she and her wheel-chair bound son are found murdered. Sarah finds the bodies.
It is the anniversary of the disappearance of Noah's younger siblings, and he and his grandmother are camping in the area. This is the year that Noah hopes to find answers.
Gerard is in town to make sure that Sarah doesn't sell Blackhall Manor, but he is staying for another reason.
Arnold is racked with guilt over what happened years ago, but he struggles to confess.
Not all survive.
My Opinions: This was another fast and compelling, if a little dark, read. I like the somewhat supernatural feel to the whole town.
I absolutely love the characters in this series....well, most of them, and I fear we have not yet heard the end of Irving. Sarah is a wonderful and caring individual, and I wouldn't mind having her as a friend myself!
The plot held my attention, but I think that the book dragged on a little too long after the mystery was solved.
Bottom line....I can't wait for the next one in this series!

I'm sorry but this was a 'Did not like' for me. I enjoyed the setting in the first book of this series but didn't get on with The Night Whispers at all.
What I enjoyed about the first book was the development of Sarah from an under confident and isolated character into one with budding friendships and someone with confidence in their natural ability within the job. Yet, for me, Sarah was not only back at square one in regards to her job in this book but she somehow seemed worse. She came across as a wet blanket, backing down to anything and anyone who gave her any sort of challenge. I think this genre is saturated with the sassy, take no prisoner types, and I don't want Sarah to be like a Lara Croft of Slayton, but she needs something more about her to keep me interested.
I also enjoyed the creepiness of the setting in book 1, but this one just didn't have the same level at all. Although creepy child ghosts usually get me, these ones didn't.
I do like the paranormal elements that run through. They aren't the main plot point and because that makes them feel understated, it seems to make them more plausible.
Aside from the first murders nothing really happens until about the 70% mark. Most of it is just Sarah walking round saying, there is something dodgy going on in Slayton. I know in the first book we had Sarah's past and then the current murders being uncovered, so we were perhaps missing the subplot here, but it just felt so sparse through the middle.
The endings felt like they were there for 'twists' and shocks but they felt so underdevloped. I really did cringe a couple of times because it just didn't feel right at all. There was no foreshadowing, and then the karma ending was just too much.
There were also bits that I thought were incorrect. In chapter 24 they started referring to a Greg, but I had no idea who they were talking about and I think it was meant to be Geoffrey? But maybe I did just miss something.
I really did want to like this one but it didn't feel developed or polished enough and the plot let this one down.
I'm not sure if I would dip back in to the series. Maybe go for book 3 as a decider because there is one I did like and one that I didn't.
When two children knock at the door of an elderly lady and her disabled son, the town of Slayton are shocked when they are found murdered. Who are the black-eyed children appearing before death comes calling?
We meet up with Detective Sarah Noble again in this second book in the series. It was lovely to see some of the characters back again, especially Elliot and Elsie.
The start of this book chilled me to the bone, it was so creepy and tense. A clever storyline that left you guessing and I didn’t have a clue who the killer was.
My thanks to Embla Books and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this spooky book
if you heard the whispers dont answer the knock at the door...it might be the black eyed children
when sarah is tasked with a welfare check on one of her neighbours she wasnt expecting to find them murdered with their eyes gouged out.... and the place looked like an abattoir with blood everywhere
but its not long before rumours of the blackeyed children roaming around the town and if you saw or heard their whispers in the night then you had better beware
but as the body count goes up and strange things are occuring its not long sarah is in the thick of things
this book quite literally freaked me out... hit a few nerves there but on the whole i really enjoyed this one and realising this is part of a series i cant wait for the next one to come out, will be keeping an eye out for more of this authors books
The Night Whispers sees the return of Detective Sarah Noble as she investigates another case in the town of Slayton. In this one, two young children with black eyes are knocking on a door. At the home of Geoffrey and his mother, Rosemary Simmons something is going off. When Sarah carries out a neighbour check she finds a red hand print on a wall and Rosemary and Geoffrey dead.
This is a fantastic, tension-filled read with a great sense of foreboding throughout. Detective Sarah Noble, an intriguing protagonist who is a bit of a mess, is someone to root for. Compelling, extremely dark and unputdownable. I had absolutely no idea who the murderer could have been. A good choice if you like thrillers with a supernatural slant.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Embla Books via NetGalley and this review is my own unbiased opinion.
it’s hard to rate this one as it’s so short but i don’t think i have ever felt so bored reading a 200 page book?? like normally i would have finished this quicker, it just felt empty in a way
i did enjoy the story a lot, normally child ghosts gets me spooked but this one didn’t at all. i think this would of been a fun read especially with the story line of the whispers and everything so i was disappointed when i felt the complete opposite
overall, the first two books i didn’t enjoy that much. i will continue this series but i don’t know when
This book made me really uncomfortable, in the way only a book that crawls under your skin and makes you look over your shoulder while you are reading it can. We are back in the creepy town of Slayton with its shadowy past and savvy Detective Sarah Noble. An elderly lady and her wheelchair bound son hear a knock on their door late at night. Two children stand on the doorstep, what would you do only take them into your home. The home owners are found dead the next day with their eyes gouged out. As the death toll rises in the town, whispers are heard at night in the woods and stories of black eyed children have the whole town on edge. The atmosphere of this book was so creepy, I found myself with goosebumps on more than one occasion. The writing was darkly fantastic and not for the faint of heart. Lock your doors and find a blanket to hide behind before you start this book!!! I give this book all the stars!!!
Another Slayton thriller has landed in my inbox it goes straight to the top of my reading pile. After reading The Midnight Man a fantastic creepy five star read which definitely left me wanting more. I could not wait to get stuck in to The Night Whispers the story continues with all the main characters from the first book and even more creepiness. From chapter one the reader is grabbed by the throat and does not let go until the reader has turned the last page. Gruesome murders, whispers in the night and two ghostly children with black eyes. This is only the beginning of a toe curling murder mystery sprinkled with the paranormal. One of my favourite authors has another hit series on her hands. A creepy chilling thriller that kept me reading late into the night and I can't wait to read more from this very talented author. The second book in this gripping and very addictive series. Loved it. Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
When two little kids come to elderly woman Rosemary’s door asking for help late at night, she lets them in. The next day, she and her wheelchair-bound son are found brutally murdered, with the two kids nowhere in sight. Sarah is one of the local police, and is helping with the case. Her friend’s son, Elliott, seems to have some insight, as these kids visit him at night, too. And there’s a rumour about town about two black-eyed children.
I really liked this. It was creepy. There were a lot of characters to try to keep straight. The chapters were short and the POV switched around. This was little background stuff, but I also liked that she worked a few COVID things going on (the lead-up as people started wearing masks, a slight opening up again, Zoom calls…). I didn’t realize when I got this via Netgalley that it was the second book in the series. It can be read on its own (obviously, I did, and I really liked it!), but there were hints as to things that happened in the first book, and I do want to back up and read it, too.
God. This book. Was. Awful. It took me months to slog through. It’s over 50 chapters long get the author insists on ending each one on some sort of cliffhanger or poignant note. Which gets annoying. Also the ending?? We supposed to believe that your mate would be happy being your paying tenant? When you’re rich as hell? And getting your fat friend a TREADMILL!? Never mind the copaganda and odd references to covid without ever naming it. Just a very odd very bad book.

Having devoured the Midnight Man by Caroline Mitchell I couldn't wait to gee my hands on a copy of The Night Whispers. I will say this, both of these books in the Slayton Thrillers series would work best read in the Autumn/Fall time (If you are anything like me and enjoy a book that's atmospheric). That aside The Night Whispers picks up again with Sarah our detective in the small town of Slayton and there is more trouble ahead.
I won't go much into what happens in this book as I feel its best to go in a little blind. If you enjoy a book that's a supernatural thriller then I think this will hit all the right notes for you. I adored Elliot in The Midnight Man and the opening chapter sets just the right edge with him and what you are about to experience. Sarah is still a good character although at times her indecisions and questioning of her own abilities does drive me a little crazy. This was the case with the first book too but didn't take from the story nor make me feel less for the character. IF you read the first book you get a greater understanding as too why she is the way she is.
I felt The Night Whispers mystery was much better than The Mightnight Man but the ending lacked as much of a bite. It was still a very good read. These books could be read as standalones but I feel are best read together in order (The Midnight Man is available on kindle unlimited so free if you subscribe to that). Over all, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading both of the Slayton Thrillers and am so glad to have found a new author who's work is consistently good. Caroline Mitchell I praise you and your writing of the people of Slayon! A solid 4 star read, thank you to NetGalley and Embla books for the early ARC of this book. The opinions in this review are honest and my own.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
***
I did not read the first book of this series. So, I wasn't familiar with the main character.
That being said, I don't think I missed too much as I was able to follow along just fine. So, I would say this could be read as a stand alone if you like.
This town is creepy and I sort of loved it! I'm not sure I'd call this a horror book, per say. But, there are certainly darker elements. Creepy children are always, well, creepy.
That being said, I thought the pacing was solid and the action was thrilling. Mitchell is great with atmosphere and environment. The town really comes to life.
