Benji Davies is the illustrator of the Bizzy Bear books, Bizzy Bear: Let’s Go and Play and Bizzy Bear: Fun on the Farm. As a child, Benji knew that when he grew up he either wanted to make films or draw pictures in books. He is still working out which he likes best, and currently divides his time between illustrating children’s books and directing animation.
He has worked on a huge range of subjects and platforms, with clients as diverse as such Waterstone’s, Sainsbury’s and Oxfam, and in countries as different as India and Australia. He’s illustrated for several major publishers and is pleased to be working on Nosy Crow’s start-up list.
This is actually part of a series of books within the Storm Whale series and sadly, the only one I've read (so far!)
I totally fell in love with this book from the start.
The story tells of Noi who lives with his Dad by the sea. Grandma is visiting and a storm is on its way! When Noi can't sleep, Grandma tells Noi about a little girl whose house was destroyed in a storm and how the whales helped them rebuild their house again.
This is such a good length book to read at bedtime with your little ones. And the story is memorable and moreish! I can see this becoming a firm favourite, being requested night after night.
The font is bold and clear and perfect for very early readers to follow along with, even for pointing out certain words for learning. And although there are quite a few words, I think this would be great for confident early readers to enjoy reading unaided.
I love the mix of illustrations. Some of the images are larger and more detailed - I loved spotting certain items in among the busy pictures (cats, birds, fish and crabs) These were interspersed with some much simpler images which were great for promoting more discussion with your little ones about the image and the story.
This would make a great addition to any bookshelf - and I really must check out the rest of the storm whale series now too.....
I think the boy will tell his children the story his grandma told him. I like that you can see the six cats on the first page. Maybe the whale that grandma met is the mother of Noi’s whale friend. For me I think it was a little bit easy to know that the boy’s grandmother was the little girl in the story. Compared to the other books that he had written it was pretty good. A question could: be did the family save all the cats because when it shows a picture of the new house there were no cats?

Not as charming as the other installments for some reason, but a sweet addition to the series. I love the storm whale books! My son did too when he was little...
The newest The Storm Whale series book, this time we are going back in the past!
I absolutely LOVED the first two books in the series, still need to see if I can find book 3 here, because I would love to read it as well. I am so happy that this series is continuing and that it is as good as the first two books were!
In this gorgeous book grandma visits her grandson, aka the kid from the first two books. A big storm is approaching and to make sure her grandson is fine she tells him a wonderful story! And I immediately knew it was about her. About her past and what happened when she befriended a whale, even was able to sing songs with him through a flute which just had me go aww (and to be honest maybe a bit jelly as well, I wanted to step in and also have such a bond with a whale and sing with him). I loved how she kept searching for the whale even when she couldn’t find him, a lot of people may have given up but she kept on going. About another big storm and what happens next. About worries, but also about happiness and hope. The story was just wonderful and I loved every bit of it. I loved that during the storm there were people who thought about the people on the island. I loved seeing everyone aboard bond (and I had a bit of a laugh because someone even brought in some birds). And I loved how Grandma’s story ended! It made me smile! It was so sweet and it was so much like the earlier two books, in feels.
Because yes, I was a bit worried that it would just be the same or that it would just drag out, but I shouldn’t have worried! This was just perfection. Another story in the Storm Whale universe.
The art was just wonderful, as expected from Benji Davies! His art is just gorgeous and I still would love a print or more of his work on my walls!
All in all, I would highly recommend this gorgeous picture book (and the first two books) to all looking for a gorgeous story of family, friendship, hope, and whales.
As always with Davies's books, the illustrations are delicious. The writing and story seem the most forced of his that I've read though. I think it's the call backs to the previous book that makes it feel stilted to me.
