A Phd student named Denny has a life changing moment when his part time work or we can say a hobby of machines merged with a human named Sean. There are other tropes as well which makes this an even better reading experience. The discovery of this marvel attracts many others such as Chinese commandos who thinks there can’t be any better weapon than this. Read for yourself to discover these interesting tropes in the story. I highly recommend it.

That the author brings an authenticity to the sci-fi part of this sci-fi tale is no wonder. After all, he is a brain surgeon and the story revolves around the merger of man's brain and artificially intelligent machine.

The actions is cinematic. The characters and plot are superb, too. Slackers, students, soldiers and secret-society zealots all get drawn into a complex web.

This was a fun book. While in some ways it seems fairly unremarkable - it's a combination of a treasure-hunt, an action novel with goo & bad guys, good guys who might not be so good, and a man-enhanced-by-machine set in the molecular / silicon era - it's the merger & integration of all these types of book that creates an excellent skeleton for gripping writing.

I blew through this book pretty quickly (and then promptly forgot to write my review (which I'm supposed to as an ARC reader)), so I had to skim it again to refresh my recollection. And in doing so, recalled the fun writing. The characters are nicely-developed, individual, flawed yet deserving of some respect if not affection. There are even surprises in the middle of the development of a character: Are they who you thought they were - or...? The story moves at a brisk pace, never leaving you bored, waiting for the next thing to happen.

Some of the story is set in Boston; and as resident there, I always have fun with those bits. it was nice to see a few passing references to things that we locals like about the town. My guess is that the author went to school here. But those were pretty rare, and there weren't *quite* enough of them to really think the city is part of the story; it could have been set anywhere.

Interesting subtle bits of writing points the fact that the author is a medical / science practitioner, because it uses ideas / language a practitioner might (only) know. Examples: One of the characters is ravenously hungry right after a body-impact that would unexpectedly demand nutrition. Or, clever interactions between the tech & the characters, such as "This body needs cinnamon", said by the tech.) Or "The purine & pyrimidine rings of the tetravalent silicon from the orange-sack-component must be intercalating with the human carbon-based nucleic acid as the subject's tissues regenerate." Insider-stuff, that.

There are also fun dialog / ideas, e.g. the components being colors, and having genders. Or, the title of the book referring to an ancient concept (Nephilim), which likely doesn't mean what you *think* it means. (Spoiler: Heroes of old.)

It isn't one of those books that asks super-deep philosophical questions, though it does raise the issue of medical ethics: How much foundation should an experimenter / researcher into new bio / molecular tech move into human trials, and who makes that decision?

In the end, though, the story leads to "Who gets to control superman?" And because of this, it misses being a five-star review for me (according to my criteria below) because in the end, there's a big reliance on fight scenes when that question is being addressed. I like the more cerebral, or subtle answers to hard questions. Now to be sure, four-stars is what I call a really-well-done book, that I enjoyed, which I'm happy to write a positive review about because it was a good time, but which doesn't rise to the level of "best book in several years", or "I've got to turn around and read it again just to get everything out of it that's in there."

Nevertheless, good book. Worth your read. My rating system:
- Five stars is when you read a book to the end, put it down, take a deep breath, pick it up and start reading it all over again - or you would if you weren't so anxious to read the next book in a multi-book series. Or, it's simply really good.
- Four stars is when you tell yourself : ”This is good, this is well-written, this is full of interesting ideas/characters/plot points”, but you know you will never read it again.
- Three stars is when you read it to the end, put it down and proceed to forget all about it in the next instant.
- Two stars when it's so bad that it makes you laugh, or sigh, and want to write a review, but you can't remember the name of the book or dislike it so much that you don't.
- One star when you can't read past chapter 3, even as penance for your sins.

Can you imagine a Human being becoming a modernistic supreme being? If you find this intriguing, you should give this book Nephilim by Marc Arginteanu a try.

Our lead character Sean is a waiter who is trying to work out things with his ex-girlfriend. He was just a nobody living his life and struggling when he stumbles upon the Zdenek, a PhD student and gets bonded with his creation, a machine which enhances human mind and body. As brilliant as his Machine is, it's also comes with a price. To get a hold of this technology and create an army of such super soldiers, the Chinese military launch an attack which kills Zdenek. Sean is lost and devastated as he finds himself being pursued by Elite commandos and another ancient Urialites organisation. This organisation is even more dangerous and shady who believe in some ancient prophecy where they could use the power of this machine to rebuild after an apocalypse which will lead to the rise of supreme beings called Nephilim.
More and more components merge with Sean's body, against his will, which exponentially increase his speed, intelligence and strength. But he also finds himself struggling to feel human anymore. We see Sean fighting for his life, among the Chinese and Urialites, and also with himself. The characters of the story feel incredibly real, each with their own struggles and motivations, making the story not only thrilling but also emotionally resonant. The thrill and intense action packed scenes can tend to be violent for some but adds to the amazing storytelling by Arginteanu.
The pace of the book may feel a bit fast at times but the story keeps you turning to the next page without stopping. I would have loved to know more about the Chinese and the Urialites just to give more insight but it was still a good thriller ride filled with twists and turns. this book leaves you contemplating the deeper themes of destiny, identity, and the enduring power of ancient myths.
Overall, "Nephilim" is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a blend of supernatural fantasy and intricate storytelling. It's a novel that stays with you long after you've finished, leaving you to ponder the mysteries of the past and the possibilities of the present.

How would you feel when whatever happens in a sci fi fiction movie would actually happen in your real life. Sean a waiter happens to experience a sci fi movie kind of life when his world collides with the new machine invented by Denny alias Zdenek an Phd student.

Denny who has great love on inventing new machines finds himself in a soup when his new invention fails an experiment. Sean is the only person compatible with his machine and when Sean collides with machine it pulls him into a new world of “Nephilim” into a secret society named as Urialites. Sean is seen struggling in his head along with Han in the new world and has to overcome his mind voice to win against Han. In a parallel story Denny is involved in a complex relationship with Sarai. Adding more depth to the storyline a subplot is also introduced thus adding more characters and realism to the narration.

Marc here takes us through the multiple layers of complexities of human nature, power, struggle and the need to conquer. Unlike his past writings which were always full of medical and action packed, this time Marc has entered a new genre of sci fi and the introduction of many characters and sub plots enhance the storyline thus making it an interesting read. A power packed, action and adventurous read, Marc’s “Nephilim” is a perfect tale of latest technology and the current human condition.

The story starts with a battle scene where many men are down, and the main character, Sean, is struggling with voices in his head. His encounter with Han, a skilled shooter, adds to the tension as they exchange bullets. On another front, we meet Denny and Sarai, who have their own complex relationship issues. Sean, feeling guilty and special at the same time, finds himself at a bodega, trying to make sense of his feelings. An old man there curses the news for covering the battle's aftermath. A subplot involves a Falcon commando unit tracking James Chandler, a man-machine hybrid. Jie, the commander, uses reports to locate James, adding another layer of intrigue. Back at a safe house, Pat and Otto try to keep Sean safe. As the enemy closes in, Pat realizes they can't run or call for help, so he prepares for a final stand. Otto's daughters are curious and confused about Sean's appearance and injuries. Pat advises Otto to take his family and leave, promising to cover any damages. I recently read this book provided by the author. The story had a fascinating premise right from the beginning: the main character is gradually being taken over by a personal augmentation machine, which is attached to his leg by a PhD student friend. This intriguing setup hints at a deep exploration of human enhancement and its implications.

As the narrative unfolds, approximately one-third of the way in, we encounter a clandestine society known as the Urialites. This assembly is committed to fighting against the newly emerged Nephilim, who are referred to as artificially enhanced humans. This introduction introduces a fascinating dimension to the tale, establishing a clash between those who are natural and those who are augmented.

The book's imaginative take on human augmentation is compelling. The ethical dilemmas add depth, making it more than just a story. Overall, it's a unique and engaging read.

Nephiism is a whirlwind sci-fi adventure that throws a PhD student, his sentient invention, and a reluctant waiter into a chaotic blend of technology, religion, and global intrigue.

The story starts with a familiar trope: the brilliant but cash-strapped Denny who builds a remarkable machine on the side. But things take a sharp turn when the machine merges with Sean, a witty and sceptical waiter. This unlikely duo becomes the target of a secret religious order, The Urialites, who see the merged entity as a harbinger of a new Nephilim age. Meanwhile, a Chinese commando unit views the machine as a potential weapon, adding a layer of international espionage to the mix.

The book's strength lies in its unique concept. The idea of a human consciousness intertwined with a machine offers fertile ground for exploration. The author could delve into questions of identity, free will, and the boundaries between man and technology.
