Jantar Secreto
Um grupo de jovens deixa uma pequena cidade no Paraná para viver no Rio de Janeiro. 70% do livro foi uma tortura arrastada. Tive que me forçar para ler porque foi indicação de um amigo querido. O tema é excelente e eu estava mesmo bem curiosa, mas a execução me decepcionou muito. Achei a escrita bem ruim, referências fracas, diálogos nada naturais e personagens nojentos. Daí você vai me dizer que era tudo intencional e que o autor queria criar personagens mau caráter para justificar suas ações bárbaras, mas eu esperava que nem que fosse num nível pessoal aqueles indivíduos seriam um pouco menos caricatos.
Que grupo de amigos é esse que se conhece desde a infância e se trata com tanta violência e falta de respeito? O narrador fala de amor aos amigos, mas nunca demonstra. Mesmo antes das coisas irem por água abaixo, já era uma troca de ofensas gratuita entre eles que me deu asco. O cara obeso mórbido do grupo é constantemente agredido verbalmente e o narrador se refere a ele das formas mais pejorativas possíveis. O médico, por ter uma nesga de bom senso, é tratado como uma pedra no sapato e também ofendido o tempo todo. O chef de cozinha é o próprio estereótipo de boy hétero lixo que diz e faz as coisas mais absurdas sem QUALQUER justificativa plausível (na verdade é importante dizer que nada nesse livro tem uma justificativa plausível; ele tem os motivos mais fracos que já vi para as medidas mais extremas). Por fim o narrador, o personagem homossexual do grupo, também é tão dolorosamente estereotipado, principalmente quando toma um tom autodepreciativo, que só me provou que o autor está forçando a barra para que criemos antipatia por esses personagens.
É claro que com esse grupo de pessoas você não se envolve emocionalmente com a história e não torce por um final feliz. Eu só queria mesmo ver todo mundo se foder, o que nem acontece de forma tão terrível. As partes que provavelmente deveriam me chocar, não chocaram nadinha. Achei surreal como todo e qualquer personagem aleatório que vai aparecendo tem instinto homicida. As coisas acontecem e a reação das pessoas nunca é denunciar para as autoridades, não é expor para a mídia; é querer matar geral.
Os últimos 30% da obra foram mais dinâmicos, então a leitura foi mais fácil. O desfecho foi ok, ainda que muito previsível e frustrante pela quantidade de questões práticas do esquema de jantares que permanecem inexplicadas. Mas as expectativas já estavam tão baixas que eu só podia rir mesmo. A construção das cenas finais me fez pensar que talvez um filme deste livro, com um roteiro bem escrito, conseguiria salvá-lo.
Ainda sobre a escrita, o que vejo muita gente elogiando aqui, que é a repetição de frases de efeito ao longo do livro para criar um ritmo por meio do “Certa vez, em um banheiro público” é uma imitação tão escancarada do estilo do Palahniuk que me deixou incomodada. Também vejo muita gente falando sobre como o livro é uma crítica ao consumo de carne e, honestamente, acho mais provável que o autor tenha jogado algumas frases de efeito na cara do leitor para criar uma sensação de desconforto (que é o que os leitores procuram quando escolhem esse tipo de obra) do que por querer evidenciar a crueldade da indústria da carne.
Por fim, a pior coisa deste livro pra mim e principal motivo da nota baixa: ele é, do começo ao fim, absurdamente misógino e machista, e algumas vezes racista. As mulheres neste livro só servem para ser objetos sexuais, problemas a serem removidos ou para virar comida. Mulheres negras, nem se fala. A violência contra a mulher é tão naturalizada aqui que NÃO, não me venham dizer que ela tem qualquer pingo de crítica social por meio de ironia ou alegoria. Não consigo bater palma pra isso. Talvez tivesse me irritado menos se fosse um texto divertido, mas não foi. E honestamente, em um livro que se propõe a ser gore, assustador e perverso, talvez a maior prova de que ele falhou em seu propósito seja o fato de que os aspectos sociais da obra me chocaram mais do que qualquer cena sanguinolenta.

Este é, provavelmente, dos livros mais macabros que já li na vida. Um livro que nos perturba, choca e faz pensar. De uma forma descontraída o autor vai-nos pondo a refletir sobre a nossa sobrevivência enquanto espécie humana e sobre as nossas escolhas, enquanto consumidores de carne. E ao mesmo tempo é um livro que entretém.
É uma obra de ficção, no entanto, durante a leitura, questionamos se este não será um futuro cada vez mais próximo. Uma história que nos coloca em alerta.
Se ainda não leram, caso tenham oportunidade, leiam! Vale bem a pena.

o mais chocante nesse livro é que o dante prefere se envolver no tal jantar do que aceitar o dinheiro que a mãe dele ofereceu

Okay… I did NOT expect to enjoy this book anywhere near as much as I did!.. I really had no idea what to expect here.. The book just looked interesting and I had noticed it on quite a few "tbr"s.. Little did I know I was about to hop onto the equivalent of an Amusement Parks's biggest rollercoaster.. This was a RIDEEEE and I loved every molecular moment.
This is absolutely not the kind of dinner party where you show up, compliment the charcuterie board, make awkward small talk, and leave with leftovers. Raphael Montes takes a truly unhinged concept and somehow turns it into a surprisingly addictive thriller that had me repeatedly thinking, "There is no way this is about to get worse"... Spoiler alert.. it gets worse. 😬😭🤣
We follow four longtime friends who move from rural Brazil to Rio with big dreams and very little money...When financial pressure starts closing in, they stumble into an idea that begins almost as a joke and quickly becomes something far darker.. What starts as a desperate attempt to make some money spirals into a secret world catering to wealthy clients with increasingly disturbing appetites..And honestly? The escalation is where this book really got me.... I expected shock value. I expected gore. I expected the author to rely heavily on the sheer outrageousness of the premise to give the story a little extra weight.. What I didn't expect was how much I would actually want to see where these characters ended up.. Our author understands that the most interesting part of a horrifying situation isn't necessarily the horror itself..it's watching ordinary people convince themselves that the next step isn't "that bad"..Until, of course, it very much is..
Surprisingly l found myself really connecting with the characters!.. (Which as we know in this genre isn't always necessary, so it's extra nice when we get it) They were a true mixed bag.... An absolutely amazing job was done making the characters feel as real as they do outrageous..Dante's narration especially worked for me because there is this constant tension between what he knows is wrong and how desperately he wants to rationalize continuing down this dark path..
The friendship dynamic adds yet another layer because these aren't strangers thrown together in a nightmare.. like, "oh you got this mystery letter in the mail to come to this secret location also?!?!!?!".. none of that..These are characters with years of history, complicated loyalties, individual ambitions, and very different thresholds for what they're willing to tolerate.. Watching those relationships strain as the situation becomes more dangerous was one of my favorite aspects of the book.
And then there’s the satire (and Zeus KNOWS how much I love Satire Sultan)......Underneath all the outrageousness, This book has some genuinely interesting things to say about wealth, privilege, desperation, morality, and the lengths people will go to when money becomes the deciding factor in every choice. The idea that something can become acceptable simply because someone is willing to pay enough for it is deeply unsettling..and Montes clearly knows exactly how uncomfortable he wants that question to make the reader.
All that being said, was every single part perfect for me? No..There were moments when the narration became a little long-winded in the wrong direction (IMO).. As much as I loved following the characters I wish there was a littleeee more depth to the current storyline itself.. As always keep in mind I am greedy and usually when I do love a book I'm always a little disappointed there isn't "more" lol
All around It's dark, uncomfortable, occasionally absurd, and definitely not for anyone looking for a cozy little mystery to read with a cup of tea..And most definitely worth checking out if this sounds like your alcohol of choice.

Oh my goddddddd, this was so good! One of the best thrillers I've read this year. The writing was incredible; the characters were so interesting and they all felt so complex and real and I loved following Dante as a protagonist. I love how this book was written like this character was reflecting on events that already happened, and the way each chapter would end with just a little something to keep you invested. This book is CUCKOO BANANAS, and I was in shock for 99% of this book, I could not predict where it was going or just how dark it was going to get, and I was floored. This book felt like it was leaning more and more into horror territory and I LOVED that about this.
If you're an avid thriller reader and you've been burnt out or disappointed by a lot of new thrillers (like me) pleaseeeeeee give this one a shot! This book reminded me of the excited feeling I used to get when I read thrillers back in 2017/2018. It's truly one of a kind and such an unforgettable read.

O que eu posso dizer é que essa história é muito, mas MUITO bizarra.
Não sei, é tudo tão absurdo, os personagens são tão completamente estereotipados, que quando terminei o livro, o sentimento é de "tanto faz". Não gosto, não desgosto. Foi divertido, mas extremamente absurdo, de forma que em nenhum momento eu senti que qualquer coisa daquela história pudesse ser verdade. Nenhum detalhezinho.
Acho que levanta questões importantes sobre o consumo de carne no mundo, e como as pessoas dissociam a carne do animal que a fornece. Mas eu sou a pessoa que comeu churrasco do coelho de estimação, então essa discussão não é tão chocante pra mim hahahaha

Quando comecei a ler este livro, já sabia que era impressionável pelas reviews que tinha visto. Mas, quando cheguei à parte da história da carne de gaivota, pensei: 'Não!!! Não vai ser sobre isto, pois não?'. A partir daí, não consegui parar de ler até descobrir se era mesmo isso. Depois, continuei a ler para perceber como é que iam fazer isso acontecer, mas acho que estive sempre a ler com uma expressão de nojo ou com a cara de enjoada, de certeza! 😂😅
Jantar Secreto é um daqueles livros que te prendem do inicio ao fim, mas também é um livro que deixa desconfortável, no bom sentido, se um thriller perturbador for a tua cena. A escrita do Raphael Montes é envolvente e combina humor ácido e uma crítica social bem afiada.
Achei genial como ele transforma uma ideia absurda em algo quase plausível. A forma como os personagens se vão afundando cada vez mais em situações que não existe volta a dar, é natural e gradual, torna tudo ainda mais chocante.
A história gira em torno de quatro amigos – Dante, Hugo, Leitão e Miguel – que saem do interior do Paraná para tentar a vida no Rio de Janeiro. Com dificuldades financeiras, eles decidem organizar jantares clandestinos para a elite carioca. No entanto, o grande segredo por trás desses eventos é que os pratos servidos são preparados com carne exótica 👀
A ideia surge por acaso, mas logo se transforma num negócio lucrativo e perigoso, atraindo clientes dispostos a pagar uma fortuna por experiências gastronómicas extremas. À medida que a trama avança, os protagonistas veem-se cada vez mais envolvidos num mundo sombrio, repleto de segredos, violência e dilemas morais.
O livro aborda as desigualdades e a hipocrisia da sociedade, explorando a ganância e o desejo por exclusividade da elite. Questiona até onde alguém pode ir para sobreviver e o que define o certo e o errado. A narrativa é repleta de tensão, mistério e cenas impressionantes.

Não consegui apreciar tanto este livro como poderia porque não tenho tanto prazer em ler Português do Brasil como tenho em Português de Portugal ou mesmo em Inglês, mas é uma preferência minha.

The hype is real with this one, and I will say that this is one of my favorite audiobooks to date. I’m completely stunned by the two performances here. Bravo on the narration guys because it was a masterpiece in my opinion!
Four friends are in jeopardy of losing their apartment. They need to make some quick cash fast. What started as a joke, turns into a full on nightmare.
At 65% this story turned extremely dark! Dark dark! I was not expecting that, and it just glued me to the story even more.
Yes, trigger warnings galore. Cannibalism for one. And, I honestly think my horror loving friends will EAT THIS UP! Pun intended 😝.

The hype is real with this one, and I will say that this is one of my favorite audiobooks to date. I’m completely stunned by the two performances here. Bravo on the narration guys because it was a masterpiece in my opinion!
Four friends are in jeopardy of losing their apartment. They need to make some quick cash fast. What started as a joke, turns into a full on nightmare.
At 65% this story turned extremely dark! Dark dark! I was not expecting that, and it just glued me to the story even more.
Yes, trigger warnings galore. Cannibalism for one. And, I honestly think my horror loving friends will EAT THIS UP! Pun intended 😝.

When I picked up The Secret Dinner, I'll be honest, I expected a typical dinner party Thriller, but Raphael Montes definitely had something different in mind.
I went on a journey with these characters and could not put this down once I started it. This is Hostel II meets Tender is the Flesh, dishing up plenty of food for thought.
This story was originally published in 2016, but has just recently been translated to English. It follows four friends living together in Rio, who find themselves in dire straights and in desperate need of money.
Through a series of interesting interactions, they develop an unorthodox plan to get the funds they need, but it's not exactly above-board. They decide to host secret dinner parties, a recent trend among the elite, and it sucks them into dark places they never expected to find themselves in.
What starts as a bit of a half-joke, 'get rich quick scheme', quickly spirals out of control. Our main narrator is Dante, and he relays to us just how wildly-unruly their lives become because of these parties.
They started on a slippery slope as is, and are now steamrolling downhill with haste. I couldn't believe the lengths they were going to, and it certainly pushed their friendships past the limit.
When I got to the concluding bits, I was shook. I loved how far Montes took this. I get this might not be for everyone, but as a Horror Reader, it's definitely to my tastes.
I would compare the dark and gritty nature of this story to something like The Devil Takes You Home by Gabino Iglesias, or Coffin Moon by Keith Rosson.
The characters here, as in both of the stories mentioned above, are so well-developed. Their desperate circumstances were understandable, but man, the lengths they went to in order to get out of them...yikes.
The Epilogue had my jaw on the floor. I actually read it twice, because it was that good. I couldn't believe it. I never saw what was revealed coming. Well done, Montes. Well done.
I would recommend the audiobook as well if you're going to pick this one up. I thought the narration by Andre Bellido and André Santana felt so authentic and true to the story. It felt like I was listening to a friend telling me a story of something wild that had happened to them.
And when I say wild, I mean, WILDDDD!

Wow...
This is the kind of book that makes you gasp and make weird faces while reading it. I'm still shocked even though the book is over. But it's definitely not for everyone. I was buddy-reading it with my student and she didn't like it because it was very macabre and too heavy for her. I couldn't put it down though, the thriller is exciting and intriguing. Raphael Montes is the master of page-turner books. This was another great book by him, but don't read it if you don't have the stomach for it.

The Secret Dinner was a great listen. I went in completely blind and was hooked pretty early. The pacing stayed fast, and while I wasn’t deeply attached to the characters, I definitely wanted to know what the hell they had gotten themselves into and how far it was going to go.
The tension really worked once everyone stopped agreeing with each other. That’s where the story got even more interesting, because every decision seemed to make things worse, and somehow I kept having moments where I thought, “Okay… that actually makes sense,” which is not ideal when the situation is this messed up.
I also liked how money and class differences added pressure to the group without feeling forced. The Brazil setting made a lot of the logistics and social dynamics feel believable within the story instead of constantly pulling me out of it.
The multicast of Andre Santana, Andre Bellido, Bernardo De Paula, and Robb Moreira was great. The voices were easy to follow, and the performances kept the tension where it needed to be without making the darker moments feel overdone.
The ending was completely messed up, but it worked. It was satisfying, and it definitely left me thinking twice about ever doing someone a favor again.
I’d recommend this to readers who like dark thrillers, fast pacing, morally questionable decisions, and stories where every choice somehow makes the situation worse.

رواية "العشاء السري" للكاتب البرازيلي "رافاييل مونتيز" هي تأكيد على جنون الكاتب وقدرته على إمتاعك وتسليتك وطرح أفكار غريبة ومُختلفة بداخل الأحداث، فهذه التجربة الثالثة لي مع الكاتب، ولا أزال أشعر بالجوع كلما أنهيت عملاً له، لكنه جوع مختلف عما تدور حوله الرواية.
المُميز في هذه الرواية هو قدرة الكاتب على جعلك مُنتبه تماماً لكل الأحداث؛ مهما كانت دموية أو بشعة أو تُثير القرف والغثيان، أما الحكاية فبدأت من ضائقة مالية وحكاية تقترب من الخيال والأسطورة؛ يقولون أن هناك رجلاً وزوجته سقطت بهم الطائرة على جزيرة ولم يجدوا جثة الزوجة أبداً، وادعى الركاب أنهم لم يروها بل ودعوا الزوج ليأكل معهم لحم طائر النورس الموجود على الجزيرة، نجا الركاب ومعهم الزوج واستمرت حياتهم وحياته، حتى رأى الزوج في أحد الأيام إعلاناً لمطعم يُقدم لحم النورس، فأكله، وانتحر بعدها، فهل انتحر لأنه عرف أنه لم يأكل لحم نورس على الجزيرة؟ أم لأنه أعجبه طعمه؟ ومن هذه الحكاية المجنونة تنبثق أحداث روايتنا، برمزياتها المُتعددة، وسخريتها اللاذعة ونقدها الصريح لكل شيء تقريباً!
وكعادته أيضاً، يملك "رافاييل مونتيز" جعبة من الشخصيات المجنونة السيكوباتية للغاية، القادرة على استفزازك عندما تقوم بالتنفس فقط، ولكنه سيجعلك تتعاطف مع من يُريد، إنها طريقته المجنونة، وطوال الكر والفر بين جانبي الأحداث، أسرار تُفشى وتنكشف من الماضي والحاضر، نهاية الرواية مكتوبة في أول فصل ولكن تمت إضافة بعض البهارات السبايسي في آخر فصل والتي لم تعجبني تماماً لأنني توقعتها فقط!
نقطتان أخيرتان؛ مشهد ما قبل النهاية كابوسي ودموي للغاية، المشهد يطفح بالدماء في كل سطر، مشهد يليق بالرواية تماماً وبشخصياتها، لوهلة شعرت بسينمائية الحركات بين السطور وكأنني أشاهد فيلماً من خلال سطور الرواية، وهي سمة طاغية طوال أحداث الرواية. أيضاً، وضع الكاتب مجهود كبير في كتابة تفاصيل الأطعمة وطريقة طهوها وهو شيء أساسي وجوهري في الرواية، ولكنه توغل كثيراً وكثيراً لدرجة أنك تشعر أنه قام بذلك من قبل! وبكل صراحة أتوقع أي شيء من هذا الكاتب المجنون.
ختاماً.. كعادة رافاييل مونتيز، رواية مجنونة، وتجعلك تلتهمها التهاماً، ولكن خذ حذرك من الإدمان، مشهد النهاية كابوسي ولا يُنسى بسهولة، وأظن أن هذه الرواية سيُقدرها النباتيون بشدة.

Raphael Montes — o mestre de thriller psicológico.
foi o meu primeiro livro do autor e agora quero ler tudo dele! fiquei fã, muito fã. até porque este não é de todo o género de livros que leio regularmente e quando leio, ficam sempre aquém ou não mexem tanto comigo.
mas com Jantar Secreto não deu para descolar. a escrita agarra, de repente fazemos parte daquele “grupo de amigos” e só queremos ir com eles até ao fim, perceber o nível de loucura a que cada um deles vai atrever-se ir…
é bastante gráfico e violento em algumas cenas, há descrições mesmo pormenorizadas que podem fazer com que o leitor perca o apetite.. 👀 mas no geral, lê-se super bem.
a escrita do Raphael é convidativa e faz-nos querer ficar por ali. estou desejosa de ler mais livros seus!!
para contexto e para não desvendar muito: seguimos o ponto de vista de Dante, que divide apartamento com mais três amigos. num revés da vida, as dívidas acumulam-se e não conseguem pagar as contas.. quando têm a brilhante ideia de organizar jantares de carne de gaivota.
um livro muito louco, que tive oportunidade de receber num jantar muito bem organizado pela @culturaeditora, que contou com a presença on-line do autor e que adorei ouvir falar.
agora é pedir muito para que «Uma Família Feliz» e os outros livros venham para cá!

Esse é o terceiro livro do Raphael que leio e, definitivamente, será o último. A escrita é arrastada, superficial, todos os momentos que deveriam ter alguma carga dramática acabam passando batido e as motivações dos personagens são tão rasas que nenhum desenvolvimento ou consequência dos seus atos realmente te emocionam. O motivo que os levam a realizar o Jantar é tão pequeno e sem sentido que acaba se tornando risível e improvável.
A resolução da História não tem pé nem cabeça, é tudo jogado sem explicações mais elaboradas e a leitura fica parecendo completamente sem objetivo. Se ainda tivesse então, cenas gore, terror e agonia, que são coisas que imaginei ao ver o tema desse livro e poderiam ter salvado um pouco essa bomba, mas não, nada realmente chocante, agonizante ou mesmo interessante dentro do gênero pode ser visto aqui.
Fora que a "puta crítica social foda" sobre o consumo de carne é jogada tantas vezes durante a história e tão superficialmente, que toda vez que era mencionado eu só revirava os olhos. A gordofobia também me incomodou bastante porque ela não tem sentido nenhum, mesmo quando você sabe o final, ainda não justifica vindo do narrador. É só cansativo, tedioso e, em resumo, uma perda de tempo.
Por fim, não recomendo, nem mesmo se você quer fazer uma leitura só por fazer, existem livros de gore e horror bem mais interessantes e bem escritos.

First of all, I have to say that this book is so far out of my comfort zone that it’s not even in my zip code! Or my time zone! I am NOT a horror reader. But this was categorized as Humor & Satire, so I thought I’d take a chance and try it.
What a crazy story! It’s gory but also somehow funny.
Without giving away any spoilers, I will just say that it involves four young men who have been friends for years. They all come from a town in rural Brazil to Rio de Janiero to attend college. After graduating, they find themselves professionally stymied: one is a chef who can’t hold onto a job, one is a doctor, one is basically a computer hacker who doesn’t leave his room, and the one telling the tale was a business major but is frustrated, working as a clerk in a bookstore. When they find themselves in financial trouble, they come up with a very unusual solution and the rest of the story unfolds from that decision.
The final twist in the epilogue was wild.
Note: I bounced between the ebook and the audiobook for this title and the audiobook was narrated by four different narrators: André Santana, Andre Bellido, Bernardo De Paula, and Robb Moreira. One thing I noticed was that a couple of the characters (not the main ones) toward the end of the book had different names in the print version and the audio version, which was confusing, but if you’re only dealing with one format, that won’t be an issue.

Hugo is a chef; Miguel is a hospital intern; and Piglet is a mess, an agoraphobic computer whiz who mostly stays in his room, eating junk food as he invents programs and plays video games. Dante’s family has provided the seed money to get them all into this lovely apartment in the city, but now they all have rent to pay. It’s not easy, but they do it…until they are threatened with eviction for nonpayment. Wait, what? Yes. The roomie in charge of paying the rent has been squandering everyone’s money on a sex worker!
Now they’re in trouble.
Finally, they hatch a plan: they will serve incredible gourmet meals to a select group of extremely wealthy clients. Exclusivity will be the main draw. They use the name “Seagull Meat,” but that’s just a witticism. Seagulls are not what they are serving! They plan to do it only a couple of times, till they raise the rent and the back rent, but they meet with such success, and oh, so much money, that they continue, even once they no longer have to.
I read an eclectic combination of genres, and every now and then, I read a horror novel or an unusually visceral murder mystery. I don’t have the stomach for a lot of it, but I like the occasional dabble.
This story, my friends, is no dabble!
I don’t want to go into a lot of detail here, because the whole thing is better when the element of surprise is honored. However, the gruesome details, which start out humorous, increase and at about the 65% mark, I found I couldn’t take it, so I skipped to the 85% mark, then skimmed until I reached the 90% mark, where I commenced reading the rest. I initially recorded this book as “did not finish,” but I changed it to “read,” since I did in fact read the beginning, end, and most of what is in between. And the ending. The ending!! The ending. The ending is epic, and once again, it’s funny as hell.
Recommended for readers that aren’t squeamish; don’t read the promotional blurb till you’ve read the book.

Sinceramente, não entendi toda a hype em cima desse livro. Passou da metade e eu achei completamente repetitivo... fiquei lutando muito contra uma ressaca que ele poderia me dar. Enfim... é diferente, mas não me prendeu tanto assim.

Entre gargalhadas e náuseas, lá acabei esta trapalhada, para concluir que quero continuar longe deste tipo de literatura sensacionalista. Não fosse o audiolivro, e tinha ficado a meio.
Não percam tempo e não vão a correr lê-lo pela curiosidade, que tb foi a minha (até porque sabe-se lá porquê tinha este livro na estante). A não ser que gostem de motosserras a cortar pessoas aos bocados e a pingar sangue. Se gostarem, bem, sempre podem procurar ajuda especializada 😁.

Não sei se foi de ver e ouvir tantas pessoas a falar sobre este livro e no quão macabro e “nojento” era, mas estava à espera de mais. Acabei por ficar um pouco desiludida, mas le-se muito bem

🍷 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲, 𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲, 𝗽𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸.
The concept? Very, very cool. The gore and cannibalism? Bring it on. The dark humour, macabre storyline and increasingly high stakes? I actually had a lot of fun with those parts.
But Dante. 😩 His painfully whiny, entitled, pearl-clutching attitude drove me absolutely fucking crazy. I wanted him to stop complaining about how life had dealt him a bad hand and actually do something about it.
Cora, on the other hand, was everything I wanted from a character: moral, loyal, capable of detaching when necessary, and willing to get the difficult jobs done.
Ultimately, the concept was far better than my experience of the book, and the hype absolutely did not live up to it for me.
The concept? Very, very cool. The gore and cannibalism? Bring it on. The dark humour, macabre storyline and increasingly high stakes? I actually had a lot of fun with those parts.
But Dante. 😩 His painfully whiny, entitled, pearl-clutching attitude drove me absolutely fucking crazy. I wanted him to stop complaining about how life had dealt him a bad hand and actually do something about it.
Cora, on the other hand, was everything I wanted from a character: moral, loyal, capable of detaching when necessary, and willing to get the difficult jobs done.
Ultimately, the concept was far better than my experience of the book, and the hype absolutely did not live up to it for me.

Incredible!!! All the stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for this one! I am literally sitting here with my mouth open 😯 thinking this the best horrific story I have read all year! The storytelling was epic and the subject matter was…honestly I have no words. Let’s just say I’m probably not going to eat pork for very long time, if ever again!
This book is not for the faint at heart, but I damn sure recommended. The story will mess you up every which way to Sunday, and for that I say…Bravo 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 what a masterpiece and thank you very much!

Meus amigos… que festim. Que delícia. Que carnificina. Que livro.
O Rafael Montes escreve isto como se estivesse a realizar um filme: diálogos afiados, violência explícita, e até pormenores deliciosos como uma motosserra amarela cheia de autocolantes do Star Wars, Batman e Hello Kitty. Há um grupo de WhatsApp entre os quatro amigos, cheio de memes e palavrões do Leitão, que dá um toque cómico no meio da tensão.
Eu já tinha gostado muito de Dias Perfeitos, mas aqui… meu Deus. É Dias Perfeitos em esteróides. É visual, é cru, é chocante e é viciante. Não é para estômagos sensíveis. Mas se gostam de thrillers violentos com um toque de humor negro e personagens memoráveis, este é obrigatório.
E sim, se algum dia fizerem isto em filme, só aceito que seja dirigido pelo Tarantino.

não era nada do que eu estava esperando, de uma forma ruim. achei o livro todo muito repetitivo, tudo na história é muito conveniente, é tudo muito superficial para um tema que precisa ser bem aprofundado, na minha opinião. o autor teve oportunidade de fazer uma coisa meio eat the rich. mas enfim, não foi pra mim.

Okay!
Eu tava vendo muita gente enlouquecendo com a sequencia dos fatos desse livro e estava aqui achando que seria um armageddon a cada capítulo. Não é. O que eu acho ótimo, senão seria um saco.
A história de Jantar Secreto é qualquer coisa menos secreta.
O título, a capa, a sinopse, a premissa, tudo te diz o que você vai encontrar aqui.
Gostei muito de várias coisinhas desse livro.
Primeiro, o narrador e protagonista assumido do livro é um cara gay, inserido no nosso universo do mundo real, lidando com problemas que superam a sexualidade dele. Isso para mim é riquíssimo de ver, é o tipo de coisa que eu sinto falta na literatura em geral. Jantar Secreto nunca seria classificado como livro LGBTQ, e isso não impede que um LGBTQ seja o condutor maior da história.
Segundo, os outros protagonistas são pessoas completamente comuns também e a motivação original deles é que eles precisam arranjar muito dinheiro em pouquíssimo tempo. E aí existe um paralelo presente no livro inteiro sobre "ter dinheiro" e "ter sucesso", mas para mim ficou meio que em plano de fundo, como uma questão moral por trás das atitudes dos personagens. De qualquer forma, isso é uma coisa muito presente em todas as conversas de gente grande que eu vejo hoje e eu acho isso o máximo.
Terceiro, a história foi montada de um jeito generoso que não subestima a inteligência do leitor. Quem quiser juntar dois mais dois, consegue encontrar as soluções de todos os problemas, e se sente um gênio. Quem não quiser, fica no branco e aí se sente chocado depois.
Agora, algumas coisinhas que me deram coceira.
Eu como leitor tenho um pouco de incompatibilidade com o estilo de escrita do Raphael. Sempre que alguma informação anterior é necessária para entender uma cena, ele esclarece aquilo como se fosse uma história a parte e depois segue a linha normal. Isso me incomoda, mas não tira a qualidade, é só uma coisa que eu não gosto.
A história se concentra bastante na preparação do primeiro grande evento, e eu acho que alguns momentos e até alguns personagens coadjuvantes poderiam ter tido um pouco mais de atenção. Isso só para justificar melhor as visões que eles tem e as atitudes que eles tomam.
Eu amo o final, era exatamente o que eu esperava que fosse, mas a apresentação da solução final para mim ficou apressada demais. E tem uma frase em especial que não tem muita justificativa para mim quando eu penso nas ações anteriores dos personagens. Fora isso, o final é plausível, possível e bem coerente com o que eu vi em Dias Perfeitos.
Acho que é isso.

a nota reflete exatamente o sentimento que fiquei quando terminei esse livro ontem a noite: só dá pra gostar de metade dele (e não necessariamente na divisão de páginas)
repetindo o que muitas reviews aqui já falaram, a ideia pro livro é boa, mas a execução é bem mediana. no começo, eu estava muito entretida e as coisas faziam bastante sentido, mas depois comecei a pensar "quantas vezes será que o Raphael Montes assistiu Clube da Luta pra escrever esse livro?" porque, sejamos sinceros, a única diferença entre o livro e o enredo do David Fincher é que trocamos clubes da luta por jantares secretos com carne humana.
mas o que me pegou aqui mesmo é a gordofobia escancarada e EXTREMAMENTE desnecessária. a gente já sabia desde as primeiras páginas que os personagens eram desprezíveis, não precisava tratar o único personagem gordo como a pessoa mais nojenta da face da terra constantemente nos monólogos internos do personagem principal. pra você fazer um personagem principal desgostável ele não precisa ofender 30 minorias a cada 5 páginas... é aquela coisa: o canibalismo acaba sendo a parte mais de boa desse livro no final das contas
o plot é genuinamente interessante e eu entendo o porquê de ter vendido tanto, mas o final foi bem previsível e não me tirou nenhum "uauuuuuu" da boca :/ espero muito que o Raphael tenha melhorado nos livros desde Jantar Secreto, porque ainda quero dar outra chance pro autor, mas esse aqui realmente não foi pra mim (e me preocupo que seja pra qualquer pessoa)

Eu tenho tanto pra dizer que não sei nem como começar...
Esse livro é um incomodo do começo ao fim. Da pra perceber que o autor optou por responder a pergunta "que tipo de pessoa seria capaz de conceber esse tipo de ideia?" justificando com os personagens serem recheados de gordofobia, machismo, sexismo, e tudo que há de ruim. Mas se o tema principal era discutir a ideia do canibalismo, fica perdido no meio das morais questionáveis. Se o ponto era as morais questionáveis e o quão o ser humano pode ser ruim, os problemas que levam a solução de canibalismo são fraquíssimos. E quando falo das morais questionáveis não é nem da minha enquanto leitora, mas do próprio personagem principal que fica num chove não molha se lamuriando pelo que tá fazendo mas continua lá fazendo.
Agora, se você é o tipo de leitor que aguenta ler todo o tipo de comentário escroto pq o livro tem uma boa trama e que vale a pena, esse livro também não é pra você. O plot é previsível, os personagens são caricaturados, a trama acaba não indo pra lugar algum. O livro é ruim.
Se quer ler algo com temática parecida mas muito mais elaborado, bem escrito, com propósito e discussões interessantes, ignora esse livro e vai direto pra Saboroso Cadáver da Agostina Bazterrica.

Disgusting, disturbing, and depraved, this book is not for the faint of heart. Four friends desperate for money (or they’ll literally lose their home) decide to host a dinner party for only those who can afford it. What makes it so elite and expensive? It’s probably no secret at this point!
The story is told through Dante’s first-person perspective; he’s a frustratingly passive participant and observer, while debating a crisis of conscience—but that’s the point. How many of us actually know how the meat we consume is sourced? It’s dark food for thought.
This was right on the border of being too much for me though there is levity with dark humor. In the beginning it’s like ‘Weekend at Bernie’s’ but if they carved him up and served him instead of taking him to parties. Oof.
It takes zero time for things to spiral spectacularly out of control and escalate into pure carnage. Once the crescendo of crazy hits—hold on to your stomachs—the just desserts make for a wildly satisfying (and gross) climax!
As the main narrator for the audiobook, André Santana’s performance is phenomenal. He conveys all of Dante’s conflict, turmoil, and horror masterfully. Andre Bellini, Bernardo De Paula, and Rob Moreira also give excellent performances and provide realism during some heated roommate exchanges. I highly recommend the full cinematic experience!
Fans of dark social satire and psychological horror who don’t mind getting gruesome with some splatterpunk will want to pull up a chair to THE SECRET DINNER!
