Bri Johnson is a dedicated wife and mother, but even she enjoys a night out now and again, and La’keya’s bachelorette party is the perfect opportunity. At least, until Bri has to rough up some guy for getting handsy and he winds up all over the news… dead, La’keya swears she’ll keep what she knows under wraps, but only if Bri does her the favor of watching her teenage daughter, Torrie, while La’keya’s on her honeymoon. Seems simple enough.
Until Torrie goes missing.
Her kidnapper has an offer for Bri that involves kidnapping someone else to trade for Torrie. Running low on time and options, Bri doesn’t like the person she’s turning into… but what else can she do when the alternative is going to jail for murder?
I did at least finish it, but there were so many times I wanted to quit. There were so many plot holes contradictions. It seemed like one chapter was written one day, the following chapter written the day after that, and the author completely forgot what happened in the previous chapter. Timelines made absolutely no sense from one chapter/character to the next. Also, the characters just really were not fleshed out well, and the random little side bars for each of them just added nothing to the story. The conversations between characters felt surface level as well.
Editing REALLY needs to be done to this book - perfect example here .. ' “I doubt it’s Torrie. She’s probably inside with her mom. We’ve gotten ourselves into enough trouble already, haven’t we?” Bri put her hand on the large wooden door leading to the reception hall and tried to open it. “Nuh-uh. That’s not Torrie. She’s probably inside with her mom. Haven’t we gotten ourselves into enough trouble lately?” ' ... basically saying the same thing twice in 3 sentences.
I guessed the twist IMMEDIATELY. The conclusion felt rushed and sloppy. A lot more needed to be hashed out before ending.
Tigger warning: Kidnapping and shooting. This read was really good. Definitely a roller coaster of a read. You think you know what's going on then it twists on you. I loved reading this and could not put it down. Definitely a thriller but not a horror.
