A handful of heroes; an impending cataclysm. Can Ariel and her friends save the world as they know it?

"Atlantis comes to life in this beautiful and tragic novel. A rare and compelling window into what could have been, blending realism and mysticism with the light touch of Melodie's vivid prose." -Michael Le Flem, author of Visions of Atlantis

Communicating with plants and animals has become a rare gift, one Ariel cherishes. She loves her farm and her family, especially her three-hundred-year-old oma. As she grapples to preserve her connection with the spirit world, she realizes something is dreadfully wrong.

Lysandra, a gifted healer, lives in the most splendid city in the world, overflowing with culture and prosperity. Despite her meaningful career, she misses the love of her youth whom she left behind. Now something is causing more illnesses and deaths at increasingly younger ages than typical for Atlantans.

When both Ariel and Lysandra are called to the Ring of Stones for a meeting of scholars, masters, and gifted individuals, they reunite for the first time in thirty years. Pushing personal feelings aside, they must focus on discovering what’s wrong with their world and help fix it. Making a startling discovery, Ariel brings an ominous report to the council. Can the sharpest minds and most compassionate hearts of Atlantis create a plan to save their civilization, or is it doomed to be obliterated from the face of the earth forever?

The story was very thorough. I enjoyed the subplots around the story. I am also really amazed by the author’s depth of research and then plucking out only the relevant information they need and weaving it into the story’s foundation of Atlantis’s civilisation. Some places with familiar animals and/or people’s physical descriptions sparked vague recognition and delight especially because they have different/old names of the place in the book.

I reckon this could also be categorised as historical fiction? Maybe? Feels like it.

Beautiful

Well thought out and written interpretation of the land of Atlantis. Depicting laws of the universe in a time where its devastation loomed. Captivating and inspiring in ways that we all should try to live in our current time.

Before the year 1356 Atlantis was destroyed by a comet, it was come to be known as the Great Conflagration. The Atlanteans have always had special gifts: magical powers, cultural creativeness in music, art and beauty. They had the ability to heal themselves of sickness, they hardly aged. Students had aptitude in: clairvoyance, healing, air-speaking, channeling, telepathy, astral projection, levitation and precognition. They practiced Ruh Mutaharika meditation exercises for the mind and spiritual connection. They lived peacefully and enjoyed life, but something went seriously wrong.

In a small part of Elyrna, Ariel lived on an expansive farm, with four houses. Her household consisted of Philomena her mother, Ariel’s daughter Sheera and her three-hundred year old great-great-great grandmother, Oma Naunet. The other three houses were occupied by: Her brother Aram and his wife and children; their Uncle and his wife; the last house was for immigrants who help to work the expansive farm. Ariel had the ability to talk to nature, plants and animals, after all the Creator wanted all to share the land and get along. She has a special companion in Ratiki the raccoon. Ariel also has a son, Mal’akhi, he’s a city guard living in Evamont. Ariel had a former lover who had left her. Even though they both had hopes of being together, time and poor decision kept them apart. As time went on, Ariel had married, her husband went on a spiritual journey, never returned and presumed dead.

Lysandra left her home of Evamont at a young age. Her desire to be a healer was strong and it was an honor to be able to attend the Wisdom School. Four years of study and she became a Practitioner/Physician and dealt with the more difficult healings as most Atlanteans could heal themselves. Her life was good and always busy, but she yearned to reconnect with her lost love. She carried the guilt for never returning home and never sought another to love. Time was not in her favor either as she had heard that Ariel had married and had children.

Lysandra has an unexpected visit by Quetzal, her former professor from the Wisdom School. Quetzal being one hundred, had also started noticing the slow deterioration of abilities amongst Atlanteans. At the sacred mountain Quetzal met with Thoth the chief librarian of Atala and keeper of the Emerald Tablets. Thoth told him of a powerful meditation and Archangel Uriel spoke to him and provided him with information of a meeting and a parchment of nine names. They are all to meet at the time of the full moon at the Ring of Stones.

At the Ring of Stones the nine met: Thoth, Quetzal, Mandisa, Eriu, Noah, Ptah, Ziusudra, Ariel and Lysandra. When they all meet and introduce themselves their ages varied from 300 years old to twenties. Each explained where they were from and what their gifts were and what they experienced. They all agreed to meet later at the Ring of Stones under the full moon. Lysandra mixed and supplied a dried herbs, crushed mushrooms, and peyote blend and gave each person a clay incense jar. After their spiritual journeys they all relayed what they experienced. Thoth assigned each one a specific journey in relation to their gift and collect as much information as they could. Thoth instructed the nine that they would assemble again on the plain at the Winter Solstice.

Ariel would be traveling for months from one end of Atlantis to the other conversing with nature and animals. Lysandra was disappointed as she would be in Atala compiling records that Thoth requested. Lysandra asked that Ariel come see her when she arrived in Atala. Could they repair a love that was damaged?

When the nine findings were compiled the decision was for Thoth to take their findings to Poseidon’s Temple and the Council of Rulers. Some of the Kings assembled there were skeptic especially the newest King Temen. Many of the citizens didn’t believe what they were told.

Thoth had a plan and the nine agreed to do the what was the impossible. Could they save Atlantis and it’s citizens and themselves?

“Atlantis, Land of Dreams” is an amazingly, epic story. I believe Edale Lane did an outstanding job creating such a tale. It’s a story about nine brave Atlantean’s and some that felt they weren’t special, but came together to try and save Atlantis. They hoped to prevent a great destruction that had once destroyed Atlantis. It’s a suspenseful, scandalous, emotional and romantic novel filled with so many heroes and heroines. It also has corruption and the use of powers for evil. It’s a reminder of how precious nature, the land and sea and it’s creatures are. The novel also reflects the respect of the much older Atlanteans that bring knowledge to a land with a devastating issue.

The author brings to light so many interesting ideas like the Terrible Ice, the significance of the 3-6-9 mystery, the strong connection to the archangels and the Creator. Myths, Spirits and energies, the Ring of Stones, Lysandra’s paintings and so much more.

There are so many interesting characters, from the Atlanteans to non-human.
Non-human characters: Ratiki, Adira, Moonshadow, Cleo, Lahun, The Oldest Tree, Albatross, Sea Turtle, Ixquic and many more.

The author shows her talent with the research information provided which makes this a fantastic novel. I highly suggest reading these sections: Forward, map of Atlantis, the Laws and Rules, Author Notes, and Sources. The Index is especially interesting with: calendar measurements, symbols, and Gods and Angels and terms.

I highly recommend “Atlantis, Land of Dreams” it’s a magnificent novel of adventure and a great journey to save a very special place and the people who live there. As I follow Edale Lane with her “Lessons In Murder” series, “Atlantis, Land of Dreams” was a major surprise for me. I was thoroughly entertained with this amazing page-turner.
Well done!

Edale Lane never disappoints with the books she writes! Her diversity, whether it’s a historical/fantasy, mystery/thriller or a combination you can always depend on being engrossed in the stories. This novel is no different.

The amount of research that went into the book is phenomenal & putting that research into writing the book, so it was understandable is nothing short of brilliant!

The way it delves into the past & yet some of it can be looked at with events in today’s world.
The characters are strong and Edale goes into great detail to highlight her strong points and her flaws. Each character’s strong points and flaws were brought out in her writing about them.

I enjoyed this book, and it made me think that this could have been real and yet a reflection of the world and its people and problems in today’s world.
This book definitely makes you think and get involved in the book, the people in it and the history around it.

I received this book as an ARC from the author.

More than a love story surviving the apocalyptic collapse of a nation, this novel truly makes you believe in the lost civilisation of Atlantis. The author comes with sources and weaves a story that, in fine, makes sense from what we gathered of historical relics from the time.

The characters are a bit too spiritual and perfectly moral for my taste and the first 60% of the book is very detailed while most of the plot happens in the remaining 40%. However the second half of the book was really enjoyable.

If you loved the Atlantis: The Lost Empire movie as a kid, you will be obsessed with this book as an adult!

As one does, we go through phases of interests, for some it’s just history, for others it’s more based on mythology, this book is the perfect mix of the two!

The Author did an amazing job both on research but also creating such a complex and storied history for Atlanteans, everything felt so real, I felt peace and happiness when the MC’s did and I was genuinely STRESSING over the plot twist, the anticipation had me on the edge of my seat, and the follow through left me very satisfied with how the book ended.

I also have to mention how likable all of the characters were, I loved the relationships we got to see rekindled and the new ones formed along the way!

This is my first time reading a book from this author but trust me, I will be back! 4.5 ⭐️’s

Atlantis, Land of Dreams is labeled as an LGBTQ+ book. If you find this kind of book offensive, you are probably better off not reading it. But in this case, the romance is very gentle and not really offensive at all. I have read many straight romances that annoyed me much more.

Though the romance between Ariel and Lysandra is important to the book, the main focus here is the story of the end of Atlantis. Of course, nobody really knows the entire story anymore. A lot of people have considered it entirely or mostly mythical for a very long time. The author has researched the subject extensively and put together what she has found into a plausible tale. At least it makes a good story. And it is well written.

I was surprised at some of the parallels between the possible physical happenings surrounding Atlantis and the environmental changes happening today. Such things as volcanic activity, a possible change in the tilt of the earth on its axis, and glacial melting (in this story, the immediate cause of the inundation of Atlantis) are too familiar now.

Multiple myths of a great flood have been harnessed to enhance the story here, too. We have here an Atlantis that once considered itself almost the land of the gods, where most of the people lived very long lives and had impressive powers, including telepathy and the ability to communicate with animals and influence the weather. An earlier catastrophe involving a near pass by a comet and widespread volcanic action killed off many of the people and greatly reduced the number of the remaining people with these special powers (this may have been the comet that killed the dinosaurs).

Now, only a handful of people with the special powers remain. Ariel is a nature-speaker; she can communicate with animals, and to a limited extent with plants. Lysandra is a gifted healer. They are called along with several other people gifted in other fields to get together to try to find out what is happening and work out what to do about it. When they discover that the glacier at one end of the remaining islands of their former continent is melting and they have no more than a few years before disaster strikes, they must formulate a plan to get as many people, as well as the animals in their country, to safety.

This is when they decide to build the arks (in this case, not one but 5 altogether). But the arks will not be enough for all the people, who, each of the smaller kingdoms within Atlantis, urge to move to other places well ahead of time.

Most of the other versions of the Atlantis story that I have read, or seen movies of, have the rulers and a lot of the people turning on whatever gods they previously believed in and becoming evil. That isn’t so much the case here. Indeed, Ariel’s former husband (who had long since disappeared from her life) has turned greedy and, under the influence of his wizard mentor, gotten himself elected King of the country he found himself in, married a wealthy noblewoman, and decided to make a place for his people on the mainland by invading and taking over one of their colonies – a plan which fails badly – but even he doesn’t seem all that evil in the end. Just stupid. And he seems to be the most seriously punished of anybody.

There are also catastrophe deniers who refuse to believe anything bad is going to happen – until all the ships have left and the flood is almost upon them. Things don’t work out so well for them either.

In this beautiful and fascinating historical fantasy novel about the myth of Atlantis, Edale Lane brings the magic of this ancient legend to life in vibrant, arresting detail and beautiful character narratives and relationships. With a complex world-building system and a vibrant culture and society at the heart of the novel, chapters fluctuate between different characters and explore familial and romantic relationships that are complex, realistic, and endearing. With a powerful, immersive opening and so many beautiful details and story elements, readers of fantasy novels and Greek mythology will absolutely love the world Edale Lane has brought to life based on the ancient sources of Atlantis. The characters are the star of the show, but the world of Atlantis and its vibrant contrasts in locations are masterful backdrops for the story and the magic system itself, which is unique and straightforward yet feeling natural and historical to this Atlantis. Beautiful, complex, and arresting in its vibrant imagery, readers will want to visit this beautiful world and live alongside Lysandra, Sheera, and Ariel as their worlds change around them -- and readers will definitely want one of these magical gifts. Exciting, incredibly detailed, and so incredibly realistic, fans of historical fiction, fantasy, and mythology will absolutely love Edale Lane’s latest release.

The world in this novel is a mix of fantasy, legends and folklore, historical fiction, romance, and more. I appreciated how Lane blended the different religions and myths from so many different cultures, all of which I could see in the names, the types of buildings and communities, as well as in some of the beliefs.

The large cast of characters could be confusing, but it was easy to recall all the main characters, especially Ariel and Lysandra, since they were the central characters. I don’t want to give anything away, but it is a dense, well thought out story with many details of both good and bad people living in a changing world. Just like now, some saw the changes coming while others didn’t, or they didn’t believe that the changes would affect them or be drastic.

There is a foreword, and an afterword, in which the author explains some of the details of the various cultures, beliefs and events in this novel. The foreword intrigued me enough to want to stop reading and do research of my own, but I resisted and dove into the novel instead. Atlantis is a long, complex novel and well worth reading.

First of all this was a really interesting story and can understand why many readers will give it five stars, however I had a few issues that are probably more about me than the book. To begin with there was the minor problem of too much description, about everything, especially looks, hairstyles, clothes etc.

As the story develops the author’s mixing legend, religious stories and history becomes more prominent and at times was fascinating and very clever, but I wasn't entirely convinced, perhaps it just felt a little bit too contrived.

Also the author was more interested in the emotional aspects of the characters in the story whereas I, as a more traditional Fantasy and SciFi fan, tend to go more with the adventure.
If possible I would have given 3.5 stars.

The answer to the question Who would you invite to dinner... my reply would be the legendary Edale Lane. Her version of Atlantis, Land of Dreams is based on solid research (I hope there's a PhD in there) and historical fiction. It's a slow but enthralling read as well as a love story. The author's notes at the end of the book Link the characters and the cosmos to the age of the zodiac. There is just enough recognisable facts to make the Dream believable such as communicating with the ancient dolphin, the sea turtle , the albatross. The symbols between the chapters held the tale together. So did the water colour paintings. After the preparation comes the devastation but Edale Lane leaves us with an ending of Hope. A very well put together tale. Thankyou

I really enjoyed this book. It took me on an incredible journey. At times, it was hard for me to read because of the loss of all the animals. I liked how the story integrated many different myths, fables, and beliefs from different cultures. It was fun recognizing the different regions they ended up in and having a new take on why some of the same symbols and structures show up in the four corners of the world. One thing I would have liked was if the story showed more of the technology and lives of the Atlanteans before the deluge. I wouldn't mind a sequel, especially with Ariel and Lysandra.

This truly is an epic historical fantasy! Ariel and Lysandra are amazing characters. The story will draw you in. I love the attention to detail and appreciate the huge amount of time it must have taken to do all the research for the story. Anything that involves the Lost City will grab my attention, but this story kept me going all the way to the end. If this type of historical fantasy is your thing, you won’t be disappointed.

I read an Advance Copy of this book and am leaving this voluntary review based on my personal reading experience.

What an amazing book. The prose is lyrical describing a wonderful, nurturing world. The world building is complex but so easy to understand. The characters are complex and relatable. The romance is enchanting. The story describes a lot of mundane events in loving detail that make life so inviting. I love all of this book and although it depicted a disaster, it was a great saga of faith and hope. I don’t know if Atlantis existed, but if it did, I hope it was just like this book. I received an ARC.

I like to read books about Atlantis but they are really hit or miss for me. This one was one of the best I’ve read if not THE best! I really loved it. The way the author used myth and things we know today was just amazing.
I’m going to read more from this author. I would recommend this book if you like world building and just a different way to see things.

WOW what an amazing story.

There is so much woven into this story that makes it feel like a true account of what happened all those years ago. It gives so many plausible reasons for why things are where they are today and how they came about. Also interweaving how fables came about and stories from the bible which may have been told and retold to have been altered over time.
I was completely enchanted by this book and cannot believe the amount of research that must have gone into it without even imagining the depth of imagination needed to create this world.
I do not usually enjoy fantasy books but this did not feel like fantasy but rather an historical account of past events.
I fell in love with so many of the characters and must admit I cried a few times which just shows the depth of feeling this story evoked
