Going Overboard

Rate this book
From author Caroline Huntoon comes a sparkling new middle grade novel, Going Overboard, a reverse-Parent Trap story where tweens Piper and Colton must force their parents to break up, or their lives will change forever.

Piper Shapiro has the best mom in the world: Noura, a single parent by choice who always has a plan, whether it's for a spontaneous Saturday adventure or helping Piper navigate middle school as a nonbinary kid. They're a package deal, and they tell each other everything. At least, they used to. But then Noura invites Piper out to dinner with her girlfriend Gwinny . . .and Gwinny’s son, Colton—a boy Piper knows, and doesn't exactly get along with. Piper panics when the realization Noura and Gwinny are serious about each other. Suddenly, Piper’s life as half of a duo has an expiration date, and ze is horrified.

To put a stop to any potential wedding bells, Piper makes a break up the parents and keep things the way they are—the way they should be. When Gwinny surprises everyone with a getting-to-know-each-other cruise for spring break, Piper's game is on—and Colton is in on it. The two of them work hard to make it clear that they are not one big happy family, even though it turns out that Colton might not be so bad after all. But when things with Operation Break Up go a bit too far, Piper starts to question everything… and realize that maybe a little change isn't a bad thing.

No rating, because I'm the problem here.
I think this one definitely proved that reverse Parent Traps are NOT my thing at ALL. I understand where Piper is coming from but God, zir insistence on trying to ruin zir mom's relationship because ze don't want things to change just got so obnoxious so quickly, especially when Noura and Gwinny are both absolute top-tier moms who go out of their way to be wonderful to Piper. I usually hate the line of "critique" that's just "nooooo the child character is acting like a child and not like an adult who knows what to say and do in every situation!!!!" but reading about a kid purposefully making everyone miserable on an all-expenses-paid Caribbean cruise because ze don't want zir mom to date someone was borderline unbearable.
It was nice to see Piper bond with Colton, though, and the resolution was cute. I think that kids will get a kick out of this one, too! Piper's love of fashion was endearing and I liked hearing about how ze makes zir own clothes, and it's also really great that more middle grade books have been coming out with main characters who use neopronouns!

"Your feelings matter. I'm glad you can look back with some perspective, but I also think it's worth thinking about what made you feel that way in the first place."

Reverse Parent-Trap on a cruise was such a fun concept! ✨️

A sweet middle grade book that tackles themes of family and change. Piper is a nonbinary middle schooler with such a supportive mom. But when Mom gets a new girlfriend Gwinny, and things are getting serious, Piper plans a breakup plot with Gwinny's son Colton.

This had some touching moments and Pip's chaos and confusion and emotions were very middle-school relatable. I also haven't seen much nonbinary representation in the middle grade sphere and I think it was a very big positive of this book.

The pacing was a little all over the place and this left me feeling like the ending was rushed and unfinished (some plot points weren't fully wrapped up, especially concerning Pip's friend Tru). I also wish we got a little more from Gwinny besides being "Mom's girlfriend."

As a middle grade book, the themes and representation were on point.

thank you to netgalley for the arc!

Cute middle grades story about two enemies (turned friends…shocker!) trying to break their moms up. It’s the first middle grades book I’ve read where the protagonist uses neopronouns (ze/zir) and I really liked that being a big plot point. I would recommend this to my students…if I didn’t have to send a letter home to their parents telling them that there are two women kissing in it and a nonbinary main character…but it will live on my shelf in case a kid wants to check it out!

This is a short middle grade book about a nonbinary 12 year old trying to figure out how zey fit into the world. I enjoyed the reverse Parent Trap aspect of the novel even when it became increasingly obvious that Piper was being a selfish brat and should just talk to zeir mom about what zey where feeling. I liked read about Piper's feelings about nonbinary fashion and how zey wanted to meld men's and women's fashion and come up with something different than just part of each. The friendship between Piper and Colton growing was nice to see and while I thought it would have been nice to see a bit more communication between the two about the dance and how they were feeling about it after, I thought the book was fun overall with a look at how hard it is for kids when their families change and grow.

Worked on this during my publishing internship and wanted to see how it changed! Super cute and super fun concept. Love the representation both in family compositions and in character identities too. While I’m also not a 12 year old I totally understand the hesitation and concern over potential changes to your family composition. Change is scary—I can only imagine how unnerving it could feel as a middle schooler! Overall I really liked the socioemotional learning and growth that happens, all wrapped up in a fun reverse Parent Trap plot! It’s definitely at time juvenile but again, that’s the age demographic and the age of the characters!

A really cute book about a kid that is best friends with zir mom, and then has to learn how to share her with someone else. I felt like Piper was a very relatable tween, in that ze sometimes seemed very mature, and other times seem kind of childlike and making poor decisions. That’s literally what this age is about— straddling that like between childhood and your teen years.

For me, the best take-away from the story is that it’s okay— it’s actually good, in fact— for relationships to change and evolve.

3.5 stars, rounded up.

I'll say at the outset: I liked a number of things about this, even if I had some reservations.

On the plus side, Piper's voice is really clear throughout, and I always understood zir motivations. Zir relationship with zir mom is the driving force behind most of the dubious decisions Piper makes throughout the book, and I think they will be clear to many young readers with parents who are newly dating, and who fear losing their attention (or just fear change in general).

My biggest complaint was how plot-driven this could be at times, in the sense that the characters would do things that didn't seem organic. For example, Piper decides that ze's going to break up the moms, and then a chapter or two later has a conversation with Tru in which Tru suggests the same thing and Piper is like, "What a wild idea, how would I even do that?" The resolution was also VERY rushed, and I wish we'd spent more time on almost all the relationships. Tru (a Black transfemme character) had the potential to be really interesting but came across as more token, and Gwinny (Mom's girlfriend) never felt particularly developed. The writing style made Piper sound pretty mature and self-aware at times, which was one reason some of the sillier plot stuff came across as forced or out of place. Even without plot changes, I would have enjoyed this more if the story didn't frequently gloss over moments of reflection and rush to the next thing as quickly as possible. Then again, it is a middle grade work.

Overall, this was a lot of fun. I liked it, I just saw places where the story could have been stronger. In general, I prefer books that place more focus on character than external action, so many of my hangups are based on personal preference, and thus rounded up.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

Piper is happy the way things are. Ze have come out as non-binary, and that is feeling right. Zer mother has been single their whole life, and that suits them. So Ze are a little dismayed when not only does zer mom get serious about Gwinny, but ze also find out they are going on a cruise with them, and Gwinny’s son, Colton, who Piper knows from school, and doesn’t like.

But, both Colton and Piper don’t want their parents to marry, and they figure the only way to stop it is to show how incompatible they are, by always fighting and getting in trouble. Problem is, of course, Piper begins to second guess themselves. Colton isn’t that bad, and Gwinny does make zer mother happy.

The blurb for the book talks about this being a reverse Parent Trap, which it is in a way. But if that gets you reading the book, then yes, distribute it that way. I liked how Piper being non-binary wasn’t the point of the book. It was just an aspect of zem. And of course their mom and Gwinny were lesbian/bi, and that wasn’t make a big thing either, which is just perfect.

I enjoyed the story, though I caught on quicker than Piper, that ze shouldn’t break the two up. But isn't that what is the fun part of reading, when you get it before the main character does?

E-ARC provided by publisher via Netgalley.

Super cute middle grade novel about a nonbinary middle-schooler scheming to break up zir mom's new relationship after realizing she's dating zir's school nemesis.

Piper is a great protagonist for middle grade fiction. Ze wants to be outgoing, but is still too shy, afraid of major change, and struggles with feelings of what ze wants vs what is actually right. Piper and zir mom's relationship is great, she's very supportive and loving while still being a person in her own right - and even better that Piper realizes this too! I was initially thinking ze acts too much like a brat, but the guilt is well explored and will resonate with young readers. I do think the other boy, Colton, could have been more developed or had more of an opportunity to show his personality. There are little moments, but I wanted more from him as the two kids end up bonding.

The plot is fast paced, you're not beaten over the head with the moral of the story, plus it's really cool to see a nonbinary mc with neopronouns without it being The Main Thing.

Overall highly recommend!

Okay so Going Overboard by Caroline Huntoon was… fine. It had some cute moments, some solid character stuff, and I appreciate the nonbinary rep with the main character, Georgie. The cruise ship setting was kind of fun in a chaotic, reality-TV-show-meets-theater-kid way, but it also made the story feel a little boxed in after a while—like we were just looping through the same deck drama over and over.

I think my main issue was that the plot didn’t fully go anywhere. Like, we had potential for something really deep with the grief, the identity exploration, the messy relationships—and there were glimpses! But it kinda skimmed the surface instead of diving in. Also, the romance felt like an afterthought, which isn’t a crime, but if you’re picking this up hoping for swoon, you might leave a little dry.

All that said, I didn’t hate it! It had a good heart, and I think younger readers or anyone who’s into theater kid chaos will probably vibe with it more than I did. Just don’t go in expecting a full emotional shipwreck. 3 out of 5 stars from me.

What happens when your mother finds a girlfriend, and it looks like it's getting serious? Piper Shapiro has the best mom. When Piper came out as nonbinary, there couldn't have been a more supportive person in zir corner. Recently, things are looking like there may be a change.
It starts the day Piper's mother announces they will be going to lunch with Gwinny and her son. Lunch with the new girlfriend shouldn't be too bad, but meeting the son could be uncomfortable. When it turns out the son is Colton, a sixth grader in Piper's class, it is definitely uncomfortable. To make matters worse, Gwinny invites them on a four day cruise.

Piper immediately begins hatching a plan to break up the couple before things get too serious. Surprisingly, Colton is onboard with the plan. Together, they concoct all sorts of mischief to induce stress on the vacation. Will the plan work? In the end, do they even want it to work?

Author Caroline Huntoon displays their trademark humor in the fast-paced romantic adventure. Perfect for middle grade readers looking for fun and unusual friendships.

A MG reverse Parent Trap story from @carolinehuntoon
🛳️
Piper loves hir mother, who has always been nothing but accepting of Piper when ze came out as nonbinary. It was the two of them against the world…until Piper’s mom, Noura, accepts a Spring Break cruise from her new girlfriend, Gwinny. Gwinny is bringing along her son Colton, with whom Piper does not get along with. The tweens soon realize they have got to break their moms up or risk being part of a new family together.
🛳️
I loved the concept of a reverse Parent Trap story with such a diverse cast of characters. I love seeing nonbinary rep in middle grade lit without it being the sole focus of the story. It just is. I found Pip’s feelings, emotions and actions to be that of a tween today. A great read for Pride month or ANY MONTH!

Piper adores zir single mom. Piper's mom is dating someone whose son has participated in bullying Piper. Ze is not at all happy with zir mom dating Gwinny.

Ze decides to break them up, so that everything can go back to normal. The perfect opportunity arrives when Gwinny announces that she has tickets for a cruise for all of them. Piper will have to work with Colton to break up the happy couple. Can the children break up their moms? Or will they be stepsibilings soon?

This is a delightful book that shows how challenging it can be for children to adjust to their parents dating. This book will help those who feel out of place, unhappy, etc., find a reflection for their feelings. At the same time, it can help them consider healthier ways of coping instead of what Piper does.

This is a cute middle grade story about Piper, a nonbinary 6th grader. Piper goes to a dance and has an embarrassing moment with a boy named Colton. Lo and behold, Piper's mom is dating Colton's mom, and, SURPRISE! Colton's mom invites Piper and zir mom on a cruise. Piper decides ze needs to break up the moms because ze can not imagine anything worse than being tied to Colton.

This was a fine book. It touches on some important topics about blended families and gender nonconformity. I think it'd be enjoyable for middle schoolers wanting representation for those aspects.

A fun middle grade reverse Parent trap spring break on a cruise ship book that sees two sixth graders whose moms are dating working together to break them up while their families take a vacation. I loved the nonbinary rep, the supportive parent relationship and the fun cruise setting. There's also an important message about people being deeper than they seem at first and that no one has an easy life. Lighthearted with tons of emotional depth. Highly recommended for fans of books like Family week and Linus and Etta could use a win. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!

I did NOT like this book. At all. The sentences did not flow well in so many spots. I had to reread several times to understand what was being said. I finally realized that I think there were several spots where commas would have been really helpful.
I could not relate to the main character, Piper, who was extremely confident about proclaiming to be nonbinary and, at the same time, extremely insecure and over reactive about everything else in life.
I understand that authors are trying to represent all possible types of people, however literary quality should always be the highest priority. This was not good.

I was provided an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A short book but a lot packed in it. I really liked the cruise setting. The main character annoyed me sometimes and I had to remind myself that ze was 12, so immaturity was a given.
I really liked the side characters, especially the moms.
Overall, it was a great read, very short but so sweet and filled with so so many feelings.
I absolutely will have to read more books by Caroline Huntoon.

Going Overboard is a super fun MG read with a non-binary protagonist! I loved this one! The cruise ship setting was fun, and obviously written by someone who has been on a cruise before. I love Parent Trap-ish storylines, and the chaos of this one did not disappoint! Definitely pick up for summer fun, positive LGBTQIA+ characters, and some good-natured mischief.

This book is so much fun!!!!! I loved Piper's voice, the cruise setting (the ocean freaks me out but it was fun to live vicariously), and the reverse Parent Trap plot. Huntoon's characters are all so lovable, despite their flaws and mistakes and fears. And if this isn't the first MG book to use ze/zim/zir pronouns, it's definitely one of the first, which warms my whole heart. Huntoon is a can't-miss author for me. These characters pop off the page.

I wanted to like this book, I enjoy the inclusion of the lgbt community , Lesbians, non binary, transgender ect.

My issue is I really can’t stand the main characters personality, or how they try to sabotage their mothers relationship because of one interaction that happens with their mothers girlfriends son.

The constant, crying, whining and selfishness of the main character made me DNF at 32%

This was a classic relationship sabotage adventure. If your favorite part of The Parent Trap was terrorizing Meredith and you always wanted Chessy and Martin to be your parents, this middle grade book is for you.

I love a good enemies to besties storyline and a short wholesome story that stills packs a punch. This has both of those things.

I wasn't sure about this -- anything parent trap related is pretty high on my fear-of-cringe-o-meter -- but the characters are so great and so genuine from the very first moment that I got sucked in. Piper and zir mom, Colton and his mom and the cruise -- it's a non-stop plot with plenty of emotional depth and interesting activities and a deep love of fashion and muppets. Hard to argue with any of that.

Piper's mom is dating Piper's classmate Colton's mom, and Piper does not get along with Colton. When the kids are forced to go on a cruise with their moms, the two scheme to get them to break up with mixed consequences. The characters acknowledge this "reverse Parent Trap" idea, and Piper's guilt and confusion about potential changes to her family feel realistic. Piper's pronouns are integrated throughout the story as part of Piper's growth. A good book with great representation.

I quite enjoyed this reverse Parent Trap of a story. Some of the antics felt off and Piper annoyed me more times than I would have liked, but overall, I found it to be a fun and enjoyable story of family, belonging, finding ones identity, and ultimately, love. I definitely recommend.
