Luminiferos: The Darkness Within

Rate this book
The riveting second book in the seven-part LUMINIFEROS saga of romance, self-discovery and two worlds on the brink

CURSED. HUNTED. CAUGHT BETWEEN TWO LETHAL SHAPESHIFTERS

Lilly White is poisoned. Venom marks on her wrists spread daily, threatening to consume her body and soul. As the last hope against Noxohit’s destruction of the Human and Spirit Worlds, Lilly must find a cure before she turns into one of his monsters – or her own allies kill her first.

Her one beacon is Will, a Raven Guardian with deadly power and seductive charm. He is her sworn protector, but he’s also duty-bound and hiding secrets of his own.

As they race against time and despair, Lilly falls under the jade gaze of a being so powerful, he can bend reality at will. His touch is as cold as dragon scales and just as lethally beguiling.

With his perilous guidance, Lilly might find salvation. But to break the curse, she must embrace the darkness within, risking her life… and testing her love.

Dear Readers,

It’s difficult to find the right words to express what this book, Luminiferos: The Darkness Within, means to me. I never imagined that anything could consume me more than my PhD in Physics did. But this book — this story — became the greatest obsession of my life. Over the past year, I’ve poured every ounce of myself into it, working from dawn until dusk, through weekends, and with fewer days off than I can count on my fingers. It was relentless, intense, and, at times, overwhelming — but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Although my husband might think differently😁

Luminiferos: The Darkness Within is more than just a story; it’s a reflection of us all. We all carry pieces of ourselves that we suppress, whether they are physical, mental, or emotional struggles. We find things to hate, to reject about ourselves. But life, with all its cruelty, unfairness, and brutality, is still somehow perfect in its imperfections — a paradox that has always fascinated me. And that is the heart of this book. It’s about finding light, even if the path takes us through the deepest darkness, and in doing so, learning to accept and appreciate both.

I hope that the countless hours I’ve spent crafting this story will resonate with you, that it will entertain you, maybe challenge you, and perhaps even comfort you. And I hope that the simmering romantic elements within it will stir your heart just as much as they did mine.

Thank you for going on this journey with me. I’m humbled and grateful for your interest in my book, and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Luminiferos: The Darkness Within.

Warmest regards,

Yana Metro

Firstly, thank you for making me one of your ARC reader Yana Metro!!

I thoroughly loved this book!! It was a rollercoaster of events from start to finish. Vesta 😭 The found family, love and friendship tropes are still very strong in this book as the almost the driving force for Lilly
Despite the times Lilly annoyed me this book because of her stubbornness, her character development in this book was so inspiring as we see her develop into her powers, her strength, acceptance and resilience.

In this book, we get introduced to Faolan, our second MMC who is Lilly’s master. I love him and I love his and Lilly’s interactions which is mutual dislike to friends despite Faolan wanting more. I love the contrast between Faolan and Will who in my opinion still sees her in her naive and clueless self (the woman she was) and not the woman she is becoming. Will frustrated me in this book with his overprotectiveness and secrecy while Faolan wanted her to trust in herself which is why i’m Team Faolan. However, Faolan is a sneaky, manipulative and arrogant man.
The ending tho 😭, I hope she grows stronger and more resilient. I felt for her!!! The pacing of the book is middle, with more fast-paced action towards the end of the book.

I can’t wait for the next book!!!

Please note my true rating is 4.5⭐️

Firstly a massive massive thank you to the author for providing me with this eARC!

I have not been left feeling like this after a book in such a long time. I have so many emotions and feelings and as soon as I finished the book last night, my first thought was ‘how the heck am I supposed to read anything else after this’.

This book picks up quite soon after book 1, jumping straight back into the world and magic of Faivendei. We have our FMC Lilly who is trying to deal with the poison injected into her from the main antagonist the Noxohit, keeping it hidden from the world she had only recently called home. She, our MMC Will, and their friends continue to try to save others who have been infected whilst also ensuring that Lilly doesn’t succumb to the poison and darkness inside her.

With an incident gone wrong, Lilly and her friends must prove to the council that she is not a threat. Which also, subsequently, goes wrong.

Lilly, Will and her friends are then on the run from their people and their world, which then leads Lilly to the spirit world. There, they meet Faolan, or ‘Master’ as he likes to be called, who opts to take Lilly under his wing to train her to hone her skills and save the world, and herself.

With epic battle scenes, desires pulled in a multitude of directions and high stakes, this book has it all. So let’s get down to the specifics.

Quite honestly, this book surpassed my expectations. I first came across the synopsis of this book before I even knew about book 1. The characters, the world, the tropes and the story captured my attention so much that I knew I would enjoy this book.

Book 1 for me was very much laying the land; explaining the lore, the world, the characters and essentially setting the scene. Book 2 is where it gets really hecking good. This isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy book 1, because every series with this much detail and world building requires a tutorial ‘welcome tour’. Which is why book 2 blew me away.

Readers now know how the world and magic system works, who the characters are and what their personalities are like which means the author could jump straight into the action. And that’s exactly what happens.

From the get go you’re whisked back into this world, the stakes already high and the knowledge anything is possible and that the author will not be holding back.

The story of book 2 was brilliantly done. I loved the pacing for the first and last third of the book. The middle was a little slow for me because this was when Lilly was being taught how to use her powers and at times felt a little repetitive but quite honestly, this needed to happen to slow down the fast pace of the first third of the book (before the characters go to the spirit world) and before the last third of the book (when things get really really intense).

It also helped to show how Lilly was growing and developing, becoming less fearful of the darkness within her and becoming more of her own person as opposed to the ‘naive, needs to be protected by Will’ girl we met in book 1.

So now the characters. I loved Lilly so much in this book. As mentioned earlier, she really came into her own, trusting herself and her darkness as opposed to be fearful of it and needing others to help her. She had so much genuine and real time growth as opposed to one thing happening and then magically she’s changed. There were a few decisions she made (mainly with Will, Faolan and Darius) that frustrated me but at the end of the day, she’s a 19 year old trying to save two worlds. She’s going to make bad decisions when it comes to those in her life.

The relationship between her and Will was brilliant. In book 1, I thought it had developed too quickly but this relationship developed perfectly in book 2, with miscommunication, different wishes, both being protective at the expense of the others feelings. You really felt everything and cared a lot about this couple. The miscommunication trope though was definitely troping. Some of my favourite quotes of this book came from Will in relation to his love for Lilly because my goodness did the author pull at my heart.

No spoilers but oh my goodness the last 20% of the story had me in bits with Will and Lilly. I both hate and love what the author did but it was so perfect for the story and for them as characters because it’ll allow them to grow in the next book… I won’t say any more (just remember to have tissues when you get to this point). I don’t know what it says about me but the last 20% was probably my favourite. It was just so well written and the angst and emotions it gave me… I will be thinking about it and talking about it for a long time. Probably one of my standout moments/plot/scenes/dialogues from all the books I’ve read this year.

Faolan, who was introduced as a secondary MMC, was super interesting and his personality was so widely different from the other characters in the book that he added something truly refreshing. I don’t have any really deep feelings for him other than him being really well written and in terms of him and Lilly I’m definitely team Will but I think the grounds for Faolan and Lilly were laid really well in this book and cannot wait to see what happens with them both in the next one.

Overall, this book was just incredible. It took everything I liked in book 1 and made me love them with all of the cherries and sparkles on top. My heart was broken and mended and then completely destroyed in a way that I absolutely love a book to do. I always think the indication of a good book is when you cannot pick up another book afterwards, and since finishing Luminiferos: The Darkness within, I haven’t been able to pick up another book. I wish I could read it for the first time again because wow.

This book just has everything any fantasy romance lover wants: from high stakes to greatly written romance, to amazing action scenes, to incredibly heart wrenching plot points.

Wow... what a ride! Yana kindly gave me the opportunity to read her second baby as an advance copy, and I'm going to need shelf trophies of both.

Lilly's character development in this...

I love a stabby FMC, and she isn't that, but... She's a 19 year old girl, discovering new powers; trying to master her light whilst facing the darkness to save humanity. She's gaining enemies left and right while trying to do nothing but the honourable thing. The slow burn, morally grey love interests, Will, wants to protect his delicate Lilly and it borders of stiffling. Lilly wants to be anything but a victim. Victims can't do what she needs to, to save humanity.

I can't help but wonder if he'll become our Tamlin, Dain, Adam... especially as Master Faolan joins the party.

Yana's writing in this is descriptive and emotional. The story is written in the present tense from Lilly's POV. Reading her struggles, strengths, losses, and adorations add weight to her actions. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Now, I have to wait for book 3.

Yana why are you breaking my heart like that?? I cannot believe the mix of emotions I felt through this. Happiness. Hope. Sadness. Frustration. Forgiveness. Anger. Heartbreak.

The world building in book 1 made book 2 such a comfortable read. I understood who people were, the creatures, the magic and the places.

This is easily one of my favourite romantasy series! I am currently sobbing over my boy Will (HELL YES TEAM WILL FOREVERMORE) and in denial of how long I have to wait for book 3!!

Thank you thank you and a million thank you for letting me read this ARC Yana Metro. I’m so grateful and you’re absolutely amazing, it’s so fun to interact with you as I read and you’re definitely one of my favourite authors 🤍

Favourite quoted and scenes:
🐦‍⬛ ‘Endless bookshelves stretch into the horizon, their tops vanishing into the clouds.’ - okay where can I find the Daoshee library?? And how can I learn to touchread??

🐦‍⬛ ‘Do we really need to discuss what’s self-evident? No one else will ever father your children. You belong to me.’ - oh Will <3

🐦‍⬛ ‘I like this Lilly. Can we make this version of you the default?’ - I also need to know this Darius, it would come in handy

🐦‍⬛ ‘this is a man at war who shattered his soul in eight thousand pieces to protect others from the horrors he endured alone.’ - ever so caring, my Will

🐦‍⬛ ‘Every inch of me, every fibre aches to embrace him, to heal his soul and dissolve his pain in a kiss.’

🐦‍⬛ ‘I bet he knows he looks like he slept on clouds while I embody the undead.’ - me every morning

🐦‍⬛ ‘I’d rewrite the stars for that smile of yours,’… ‘And let me make this crystal clear: I don’t share what’s mine.’

🐦‍⬛ ‘He might be sharing a soul piece with Ray, but my soul is completely intertwined with his. A life without him? Unbearable, unthinkable – utterly unfeasible.’

🐦‍⬛ ‘I thought I loved him before, but after stepping into the light of his soul, my feelings for him are even deeper and more complex. As if loving him is the only thing I truly understand in this mad world.’

(Received an an ARC does not influence my opinion)

This book made me cry so hard, I am talking the type of crying where your bottom lip quivers uncontrollably. Yana said this book would be an emotional roller coaster and she was right. I went from celebrating to clutching my chest from the pain she delivered. We are tempted by another delicious male in the form of Faolan and why I am hardly ever a why choose girlie.. he's making me having all kinds of why not both thoughts 😅 We get to learn more about Will in this book and see why he makes some of the choices he makes and his own heartbreaks. The weight on his shoulders would be enough to cripple most but he keeps pushing. Lilly not only evolves as well but she is growing into her power and fighting tooth and nail for all she holds dear. Book three will be another must read for me. If you haven't read book one, make sure to read it so you can enjoy this series as much as I am! Yana, if you're reading this, you better fix this hurt you've caused 😭😭

Heat level: 1/5. This was 1000% worth the wait. My mind is still reeling from that ending. I'm dead inside; it takes a lot to make me cry unless I'm on my period 😂 I'm still on it and I almost teared up so well done. That part might make normal readers sob. I read and write why choose and LOVE it so I'm holding on to hope Lilly ends up with both. A certain scene made me think of that meme where fae asks for the first born and the woman starts undressing as she says "so when do we start?" Still expecting that, not going to lie.

The pining and sexual tension, Lilly being as stubborn, resilient, and a little bit crazy, the countdown to the poison running through her veins, the losses that tear at her heart. I couldn't put this book down and I need the next one badly. I'm so happy to have ARC read this.

Where do I begin!? Give. Me. MORE!
Truly.

I was lucky to read this early as I was with the Omen of Light and when I tell you I have inhaled this just as fast.

Now, I won’t lie and say I didn’t struggle at the start as there’s a change in POV, but I powered through as these characters (looking at you Hairito, Vesta and you Darius) are oh so worth it. (And it says way more about my silly brain than anything else - it rebels against change) but the tense shift made way more sense in the story telling, I found I enjoyed and understood it more.

The plot twists we see kept me on the edge of my seat and just when I thought I had it all figured out Yana through another curve ball in my direction.

It’s amazing how she’s managed to give so many answers and yet leave me with so many questions

I truly cannot wait for book 3! - and Yana, cause I know you’re keeping score - add another tally on to Team Will 😍

Huge thank you to Yana Metro for providing me with an ARC for this much-anticipated sequel. It was so lovely to go back into the world of Luminoferos, and I had such a great time while there. The world, the magic, the creatures? I love it all.

Let me start with: Yana, how could you make me cry so many times in this book? The Selkies had me sobbing!

I’m glad Lilly started setting some boundaries in this book as she learned more about herself. But mostly, I’m glad she set some boundaries with Will because I could barely stand him (which devastated me). He was condescending and possessive which I just can’t stand. Also made me uncomfortable when Lilly and Lyall were compared to each other… that’s your girlfriend and your sister? Anyways, who knows where that relationship will go now?

I felt a bit bored when the gang was in Sheehallion, but it picked up a bit when Kaya did what she did and then Chapter 44 was insane and awful. But not as in the writing was awful, but what happened was awful, and I was gasping out loud at the end. 😭

While I don’t see Faolan as a love interest for Lilly, I love that man. He’s so funny, and as we learn at the end he’s pretty cool.

Yana, this was an incredible story. I can’t wait for book 3!!

Will she? Won’t she? Will he?!
I laughed, I cried, I cursed, I longed, I loved. My word. This continued journey of Lilly, Will, Darius and Vesta is WIIIILD. Just when you think you know what is coming, a twist comes. This journey of self discovery is amicable and truly speaks volumes to the real world journey we all have gone on. The most beautiful part of this is how once true acceptance is met, the world transforms.

I’d like to thank Yana Metro for entrusting me as an ARC reader for the second installment of Luminiferos. All opinions are my own.

Also, I think I’m Team Faolan, but I’ll still hold out hope for Will 💖

Yana, thank you. Thank you for writing a book with such complex characters, an extremely intense plot line, a complex magical system, and complex world building.

In this book, we see Lilly fighting against her darkness only to learn some very important things about the world and herself.
Lilly not only goes through some intense character growth but plenty of heartache. But by the end of the book, she is much stronger and happier in herself.

Will goes through plenty of stuff and some character growth himself. He has also finally started to let Lilly into his deepest, darkest secrets.

Faolan is a great new addition to the repertoire of Lilly's potential love interests. He teaches Lilly some things about her powers and darkness. He is also like Will and secretive. Faolan, however, doesn't believe Lilly is as fragile as her namesake. The trials he puts her through lend to Lilly, discovering more about herself.

Overall, I absolutely adored this, I laughed, I cried, I gasped, and everything in between. I can't wait for book 3.

Great read!
A threatening darkness, romance, magic, evil spirits, mythical creatures, an enchanted forest, and a dragon! ✨
Lilly White embarks on a quest to save The Human and The Spirit world, with her soul mate Will and her friends. She's running out of time to find a way of getting rid of the darkness poisoning her.

The world-building in this story is imaginative and charming. I enjoy the touch of dark fantasy (hoping it gets even darker in future books 👀). When I found this book, I was intrigued by its whimsical dark vibe, and I wasn't disappointed. I love the author's perspective on darkness, portraying it as something to accept that is within all of us, creating a balance and providing opportunities for learning about ourselves. Light/darkness, life/death, and all that, are some of my favorite subjects.

The plot is enthralling, and the characters are interesting and fun. Lilly was a little annoying a few times, but her character develops beautifully towards the end. The pacing of the book in the beginning is a little too rushed for my taste. Not in a bad way, I just wanted to know more! I would loved more depth in other characters like Darius and Vesta.

About the romance… this time it goes a little deeper into Will and Lilly's relationship and their connection, making more sense of their pull towards each other. We learn more about Will's character, which makes him even more lovable. I'm really enjoying the love triangle in the story, but I'm so conflicted! I can't choose between Team Will and Team Faolan. Uff! 🥵😆
Overall, I love the storyline, and I can't wait for the next book! 📕🖤

Many thanks to Yana for providing me with an ARC of this.

I loved book two in the Luminiferos series. I thought the switch to first person POV was a step in the right direction, and I feel it flowed a lot better than the first book.

The world building continued as complex and well done, and I really gelled with the new MMC that was introduced, Faolan. Who doesn't love a potential love triangle? A lot of character development is seen throughout and it feels more mature overall in comparison to the Omen of Light.

Really looking forward to seeing the events of Book 3 when it's released!

Wow. I just finished this and... Wow. I received an ARC copy from the author, and I'm incredibly grateful that I was able to read this book.
Beautifully done. I loved everything about this book - the character growth, the bonds between friends and romantic interests, the story itself. This is a book that will stay with me forever. Definitely made me think of Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas, but the world building is so different. The magic and creatures are so unique yet remind me of other similar fantasy creatures.
Found family, strong FMC, and intense friend bonds. Highly highly recommend this book. I will definitely be purchasing a paper copy (if available) and will be putting this author on my short list of reading anything they publish. Can't wait to read book 3!

CW: violence, some gore, some spice, manipulation, some others

Thank you to the author for allowing me to be a part of the ARC team! “The Darkness Within” is available now!

Obtaining the first emanation didn’t come without a price. Infected with Noxohit’s darkness, Lilly’s search for the second emanation stalls. With enemies closing in all around, her only refuge is her friends’ faith. Lilly’s time is running out though, and it seems her only chance to buy more time may lie with a creature like no other.

Okay, I have to admit, the romance portion of this story gave me whiplash. Book 1 set up an interesting, slow-burning tension that, while it didn’t have me fully enamored with the dynamic, at least had me wondering what would come of it. Book two amped up the tension and pining, but with the added layer of fighting and reconciling. Like…a lot of it. And I discovered that “the all consuming power of love” is, apparently, not enough for me to forgive characters for acting like they have no self respect and running back to their object of affection as soon as said entity is the slightest bit charming or guilty or what have you. But in the final chapter and the epilogue, in those last few moments, *things* happened that just landed the whole story solidly in the ‘oh no, I’m invested’ camp. I’m not telling you what happened; you’ll just have to read it for yourself. Whatever you’re thinking, though, you’re wrong and unprepared.

Now, you may have read that paragraph and thought, “well damn, if the romance bugged you so much, why did you keep reading?” To that I would say, “Obviously it’s because the rest of the story interested me.” Which it did. What you would need to understand is that the romance, though important, is not the entirety of the story. There are still a ton of other components, and there’s a *lot* going on to keep things interesting. In a way, it’s a really frustrating story. Not only do we have the aforementioned romantic debacle(s), but bless her heart, nothing Lilly does seems to go right. We, or at least I, have gotten so used to my MCs eventually landing on the right course of action that I’ve forgotten how infuriating it is for that to not always be the case. In this book, especially, that’s not what happens. For all the stress and failures and the action occasionally proceeding really slowly, it’s an engaging story that you want to see progress. You want things to go right, and for me that was enough to stick things out until the end. (It was totally worth it; that ending was intense)

Far and away the strongest and most consistently incredible part of this book was the world building. We finally get a chance to really sink into the spirit world here since the characters are no longer constantly running around. The details and the descriptions were absolutely fantastic, and we got the chance to see huge parts of this massive world that we previously knew very little about. It’s beautiful, but it conveys a dangerous undertone, and that whole vibe is wrapped up and delivered with just the right amount of nuance to make you feel like you’re seeing it from the corner of your eye. Gorgeous and terrifying; I loved every bit of it.

Where book 1 was a frantic race for our characters to get their feet under them (tempered with just a smidge of waiting for the other shoe to drop), this book feels like a long distance marathon. It’s got some good action scattered throughout, but the real heart-racing stuff waits until the very end, right as you and the characters are all gassed out. The pacing varies, but it always felt like a good fit for what the characters were dealing with at the time. It’s an incredibly interesting read that occasionally made me feel like I was nowhere near smart enough to understand, but fortunately it seems like Lilly’s in the same boat, so it worked out. While I didn’t always find the MCs likable, I did find myself wanting to see what happened, and I’m incredibly curious about where they go from here. It’s a really unique book, and I think I’m going to have to sit and think about it a while longer to interpret all my feelings on it.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of Luminiferos: The Darkness Within in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to the author for facilitating!

Rating: 3.5 stars

With the first book in the Luminiferos series having introduced its world, The Darkness Within gives Yana Metro the freedom to further explore its characters – both old and new.

When we left Lilly White at the end of Book 1, she was just getting to grips with the fact that Noxohit’s poison was inside her body. When book 2 opens a few months later, she’s obsessed with trying to hide this or stop its effects.

Despite Lilly’s vaunted status as a Vandor – a soul healer – her human nature still means she isn’t entirely trusted by the higher ups in Faivendei. Having the poison of Noxohit in her veins is exactly what she doesn’t need, and it makes for some tense moments where Lilly has to walk the tightrope of political alliances.

The metaphor of a tightrope is actually quite apt, considering that one of the book’s main themes is balance. All of our main characters are revealed to be performing some kind of emotional balancing act – whether past traumas or hidden natures. But it is Lilly’s embracing of her own that forms the main arc of the novel.

In a race against time to stop the poison from turning her into a bloodthirsty Nox, Lilly and her friends find themselves in Sheehallion, the realm of the Daoshee. They are a people Lilly already intensely distrusts – and with the introduction of the mysterious Faolan Frost, that feeling only increases. His training of Lilly – with its unexplained statements and encounters with creatures – reminded me of similar arcs in Star Wars: A New Hope. However, I’d argue that this hero’s journey is much more complex, not least because of Faolan’s murky moral compass. His methods seem to be as much about putting Lilly in peril as they are showing her the truth of Noxohit – and shamelessly flirting with her in the process…

Faolan’s morally ambiguous role highlights one of the novel’s deeper philosophical explorations: the complex relationship between good and evil. “Thunderstorms are dramatic – and beautiful,’ Faolan tells Lily at one point. “But storms need clear skies to form. It’s a balance of light and darkness, each giving rise to the other.’’ The novel’s suggestion – that true understanding comes when you accept evil, rather than trying to run from it – mirrors age-old philosophical debates on the same topic. This element is something I loved in the first book, so I was really glad to see it get even more attention here.

The same can be said for the romance. I think everyone will have their own view on the love triangle in the novel, but for the record, I’m 100% Team Will (despite Yana’s valiant efforts to split my loyalties!). Though it was clear in book 1 how much Will helped Lilly, here we see that it goes the other way too. Will is revealed to have struggled for years with the weight of his role in Faivendei – and it’s a weight that’s lessened through his being with Lilly. “Loving me spared him from the worst fate of all,” she explains, “becoming the monstrous evil that stole so much from him.”

Lilly and Will’s scenes together have a gorgeous, dreamlike quality to them. Usually, a couple being described as “invincible, two souls united in our own universe” would make me roll my eyes, but it completely fits with the novel’s metaphysical themes. As alluring as Faolan is, I got the sense that Lilly and Will are destined to be together.

Metro’s sophomore novel takes the best bits of her debut, and expands on them. The Darkness Within seems much more reassured in the type of story it’s trying to tell, and that means the characters and their relationships are afforded the focus they deserve.

With Will and Faolan pulling her in different directions, Lilly’s path to finding the Emanations of Luminiferos is now set to become even more complicated. I’m eagerly awaiting the next entry in the series!

Thank you so much to the author for sharing an ARC of this book with me!!

“A soul-healer – what a joke. I can cure the darkness in any soul, except for my own. The only thing that helps me is healing others, and I can’t wait to heal another nox tonight.”

“Nothing matters. Nothing but life, its endless stream, with no beginning and no end. For the first time, I can see – truly see – and all the agony of the human condition makes sense. It’s… beautiful. A paradoxical balance.”

I think I may say that I enjoyed this book more than I did book one. Shocking and quite a bit surprising if you ask me since I’m one of those fantasy readers who believe that usually book two in a series is more of a standstill where things are being put together and we are waiting for something more than will happen in the future. Are we indeed waiting for bigger things? I feel like it. Did we have something’s explained of the doubts we had after the amazing intro that was book one? Absolutely, we did. Did we have more in means of characters’ dynamic and relationship? Definitely and I enjoyed every minute of it. But we also got training, we also got tension and excitement and fear and sadness and love and devotion and lies and secrets spilled. This book felt like we were with Lilly, walking on the edge of a terrible destiny that will either bring her into darkness or help her restore the light for all humanity. But what about Will? What about the need to master her power? What about this mysterious stranger that will be the key to help her uncover more about her magic? I loved trying to answer to every single one of these questions while reading. It did make the experience so much better if you ask me. When you get to the last 300/200 pages (I read this as an ebook format) if feels like a constant climax that never truly reaches its peak !!!! And while my heart broke multiple times throughout the book (especially one moment early on and another almost at the end) I felt so pumped up by the end that the cliffhanger we are left with, makes me extremely hopeful for more to come in the future !!!

“Noxohit. The League. Daoshee. The whole damn Universe. Bring it on.
I will fight them all, my love.
I will fight.”

“Lilly, you’re built to lead and defy, not to conform and comply. So stay true to yourself and never let anyone control your life, your choices… not even me.”

“So I rise. Because I’m angry, and tired, and have no other choice. But mostly because I refuse to meet my end curled up on the ground like some poor broken thing. I’ve come too far, and I’m ready to face whatever comes next.”

4.75 rounded to 5! ARC Read from Yana Metro

Let me just start by saying... Hairito for life! If you don’t know what I mean, get ready to fall head over heels for the cutest animal/gargoyle sidekick who will steal your heart, while the rest of this wild, portal-hopping, magic-infused ride messes with your brain—in the best way possible.

Yana Metro’s world-building? Absolutely chef’s kiss. The world practically leaps off the page and plops itself right into your mind, all vivid landscapes, and strange, parallel dimensions. It’s a place you want to visit... until you remember the whole "evil is lurking everywhere" thing. You might think you’ve got the good vs. evil dynamic down, but trust me, you’ll be guessing who’s really the baddie until the last page—there’s more twists than a pretzel.

Now, let’s talk about the romance. If you live for a love triangle drenched in angst, this book’s got you covered. My heart broke about 1,374 times between the self-sacrifice, the longing gazes, and friendships that make you want to scream, "JUST KISS ALREADY!" But, thank goodness, the friendships are also the glue that mends your heart when it gets too intense. Found family vibes? Check. Beautiful sacrifices? Check. All the emotions? Double check.

Speaking of emotions, the writing in this book is dripping with philosophy. You can definitely tell Yana Metro has a degree in Philosophy—it’s like every page is sprinkled with deep, soul-searching prose. However, I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a bit murky in a few spots. There were moments when I was like, "Okay, we’ve been in this scene for how many pages now?" Some sections could have been trimmed, but, honestly, I was so hooked on the magic, subplots, and side quests that I didn’t mind too much.

Oh, and if you’re a fan of Harry Potter’s Horcrux-hunting days, prepare yourself for some similar vibes. The stakes are high, and you’ll be gripping the pages (or your e-reader) as our hero dives headfirst into a fight for survival... only to have the book end on a cliffhanger! Cruel, but now I’m counting down the days until the next book. You will need to be patient as this is a series that is being slowly released and is unfinished.

In short: If you love portal fantasies with unique magic systems, heart-wrenching relationships, and gargoyles that deserve their own spin-off series, Luminiferous: The Darkness Within is the book for you. You won’t regret it—though your heart might. Oh and I think I'm team Faolon, but I also think he might be hiding something.

4 🌟 I was interested in this ARC because of its stunning cover and beautiful character art, and while it wasn’t exactly what I expected, it was an enjoyable read. Yana Metro’s writing style and world-building are impressive, even though her wording choices were at times a bit confusing for me, and I wasn’t always sure what she was trying to say. Her writing is absolutely beautiful! The story had some really great moments and it was a rollercoaster of emotions for sure, blending fantasy elements like a “chosen one” journey, a magical quest, and a bit of romance triangle. It was fun to read , even if the relationships felt a bit rushed or forced at times, making it difficult for me to fully connect with and believe in the chemistry between the characters. Despite feeling that, I found the magic system fascinating, and Lilly’s emotional growth really stood out to me.

The choice to open in a modern-day setting felt a bit out of place for a fantasy novel, and this did make it harder for me to stay engaged and took some time to get used to, which made the pacing feel slower at times. There were some genuinely heartbreaking moments throughout the story that added a nice touch of emotional depth. While it didn’t completely grab me, I can see how this book could easily be a 5-star read for the right person. I especially enjoyed the dynamic between Lily and Will, finding his protectiveness incredibly endearing. Faolan, the new character introduced, takes Lily under his wing to train her and help her harness her abilities. First book is all about the world building and this one is where the story really picks up, the beginning was engaging but slows down during the training and picks up again at about the 70% mark. Faolan added an interesting layer to the story and brought a bit of tension and excitement, he is definitely an interesting character, I love morally grey characters, though I wasn’t entirely sold on his role in the love triangle aspect. TEAM WILL?! ❤️

Compared to her debut, Luminiferos: The Omen of Light, I definitely enjoyed this one a lot more, and I’m excited to read the rest of the series and see how the characters continue to develop. If you’re into fantasy/romantasy, detailed world-building, and adventure, it’s definitely a worth-it read!

Just finished Luminiferos: The Darkness Within and I don’t even know where to start—this book has ruined me in the best possible way. I feel like I’ve been dragged through Faivendei, laughing, crying, kicking and screaming, and I’m not even mad about it.

From the very first chapter, I was hooked. The world-building is beyond immersive—you’re not just reading about Faivendei, you’re living it. Every detail, every layer, every hidden truth… it wraps around you until you can’t tell where you end and the story begins. And the characters? I am so deeply in love with all of them. Each one is written with such care, such emotional depth, that they feel like real people—flawed, fierce, and utterly unforgettable.

And that last 30%? I was holding my breath the entire time. I laughed, I cried, I yelled at my book, and at one point I had to physically set it down and take a breath before diving back in. The twists hit hard, the feels hit harder, and the emotional rollercoaster?? I am wrecked in the most satisfying way.

Yana Metro delivers a slow burn that absolutely simmers—and even though there’s no major spice yet, (this is going to be a 7 book series!) you’re left desperate for every lingering glance, every loaded silence. It’s the kind of yearning that crawls under your skin and stays there.

But what hit me most were the deeper meanings woven so subtly into the story. There are truths in this book—about love, grief, identity, and healing—that felt so personal, so real. I genuinely believe that anyone who reads this will find a piece of themselves somewhere in its pages. I know I did. And I know if I reread it (which I absolutely will), I’ll walk away with something new every time.

I don’t want to spoil anything because this journey is one you need to take unspoiled. I wish I could read it for the first time again. I want to talk about it, scream about it, dissect every moment with someone who gets it.

So please—read it. Let’s talk. Let’s cry. Let’s spiral together. Send me to Faivendei and don’t bring me back!!!

🌟 Review of "Luminiferos: The Darkness Within" by Yana Metro 🌟

Wow, just wow! I am absolutely obsessed with "Luminiferos: The Darkness Within" by Yana Metro! This book gave me serious "Fourth Wing" vibes with a magical twist that reminded me of "Harry Potter" and the thrilling action scenes of the "Twilight Saga" (love triangle and all). 🪄✨

For those who haven’t yet dived into this gem, here’s a sneak peek at the synopsis: Lilly White is poisoned, with venom marks spreading daily and threatening to consume her body and soul. As the last hope against Noxohit’s destruction of the Human and Spirit Worlds, Lilly must find a cure before she turns into one of his monsters—or her own allies kill her first. Her one beacon is Will, a Raven Guardian with deadly power and seductive charm, who is her sworn protector but also hides secrets of his own. As they race against time and despair, Lilly encounters a being so powerful he can bend reality at will. His touch is cold as dragon scales and just as beguiling. With his perilous guidance, Lilly might find salvation, but she must embrace the darkness within, risking her life and testing her love.

The plot kept me on the edge of my seat, and the mix of familiar elements with fresh takes was simply brilliant. I can’t dive into too many details without giving away spoilers, but trust me, this book is a rollercoaster of excitement and emotions! The characters are richly developed, and the twists and turns will keep you guessing until the very end.

I’m eagerly awaiting book 3—honestly, I might be looking forward to it even more than "Onyx Storm" (and that’s saying something!). I can’t believe there aren’t more people shouting about how amazing this series is. If you want to chat more about it, my DMs are always open! 💬

Oh, and just so you know—I’m Team Faolan all the way!!! 😍 Huge thank you to YANA METRO for the eARC—I’m completely obsessed and can’t wait to see what happens next! 📚❤️

Thank you to NetGalley and Yana Metro for an e-arc of this book.

This book is definitely better than the first in the series. It focuses a lot more on the relations between the main characters and also introduces major conflicts between the FMC Lilly and the MMC Will.
There is a lot of rollercoastering jn this book, some things being resolved and some things being foreshadowed for later.
I enjoyed the action sequences and trials Lilly faced in this book and it was a lot more enjoyable than the previous with the pacing. It felt like there was more time for Will and Lilly’s relationship to be explored and there was a lot less jumping around and less information overload than the first book.

Spoilers:
I am sad/happy/hopeful for the 3rd book in the series and I am eager to see the obvious relationship that is to come with Faolan now that Will has been cursed to lose his love. I am also very happy that we can hear Hairito now, especially now that Aisha probably won’t even be back at all for probably a few more books.
Will was sort of giving me Tamlin vibes in the middle of the book though.

Summary:

Lilly is now poisoned from her previous ordeal against Noxohit in the first book, and must live with hiding it during important council meetings that will shift much needed alliances in her favor.
The other guardians at the League outside of Faivendei mostly want to just hand her over to Noxohit because he promises to just chill after Lilly is dead. Well, oops. Things don’t go according to plan and Lilly ends up having to escape the manor.

Under the tutelage of a Daoshee Elder, Faolan, Lilly seeks to finally accept the Darkness of Noxohit and ends up learning a few more nifty tricks.

'But bear in mind, using a dragon as a weapon comes with the risk of its bite'.

I'm hooked! When is the next one out? The Luminiferous series is fast becoming my favourite fantasy series. I adore Lilly. She's sassy, she's fearless, she's brave and she doesn't suffer fools. In this one, Lilly sets out on some more adventures with her friends, in an attempt to find the second emanation of Luminiferous. On the way, she encounters enemies, many, many enemies, some who may become friends and inevitable death - thankfully not hers because we still have another five more books to go!

After the world-building in book one, we are catapulted straight back into all the worlds that Lilly travels through, and of course she has Hairito by her side once again, such a cheeky, yet loyal gargoyle! Lilly is being forced to grow up fast and for a nineteen-year-old, she really is doing an awesome job of carrying the world's outcome on her shoulders! The book is full of selkies and sirens, and all sorts of fantasy creatures. Each with their own role and each bringing their own set of skills - sometimes good ones and sometimes, very, very bad!

I cannot recommend this series enough. It's soooooooo good. If you love Fourth Wing, ACOTAR, The Serpent and the Wings of Night and anything in between, please give it a go. It's honestly incredible, there are apparently five more books to go - get writing Yana. I need more Lilly, Will and Faolen in my life!

Thank you to Yana Metro for the gifted copy of Luminiferous: The Darkness Within.

First of all, thank you so much, Yana, for giving me this opportunity to be part of your ARC team and be able to read this book early, and second of all...
Why would you do that?
Why did you do that?
Why?
Everything was so good, but then...
Naaaaah, you really have to break my heart like that? 😭💔
I don't know what to feel right now 😔
But nevertheless, this book surpasses all of my expectations.
You never disappoint me at all.

Your words really captured me from the beginning.
It's written so beautifully and is very inspiring.

Lily's character development is off the charts. I love how she's becoming stronger and stronger, and she thinks before she acts, which is a huge plus for me.

Will, my favorite Raven man. I still love you even though there is a new hot character.
Will's protectiveness towards Lily is something that I don't feel annoyed about because, lawd gawd, all this man does is perfect in my eyes.

We have a new character in the book named Faolan. Now, I just want to say... I know you are hot as hell with your tattoo and all that, and you're a dragon too, but I don't like you at all! I just want to smack your head for trying to steal Lily. I swear! TEAM WILLIAM ALL THE WAY!!!

I don't want to go into details about what's happening in the book, but all I can say is... there is so much sh*t happening, and it's mind blowing! Yana will surely capture your heart with this book.

I swear, this book will be your new obsession!

💫Found family
💫Dangerous pact
💫Love triangle
💫 Magic
💫 Mythical creatures
💫 Cursed hero
💫 Forbidden love/desire
💫 Self discovery
As always- Check trigger warnings

It has been a minute since I have experienced all the emotions this book provided. Happy, confused, frustrated, sad, giddy, devastated; it was definitely a roller coaster ride that I was sitting on the edge of my seat for. I laughed, I yelled, I cried. Boy did I cry.
This is the second book in the series and Yana did a wonderful job in continuing to evolve the characters and provide more character background.
Lilly's stubbornness at times frustrated me, but I love her heart and strength. Will is still 🔥. Some of the things he said to Lilly just made my heart mush. I thought in book one their relationship developed maybe a little too fast, so the pace this book provided was 🤌🏻.
Now. Moving on to Faolan. He is a new character introduced in this book and omg I love him! He's handsome, confident to the point of being full of himself 🫦, funny and magical. I'm unsure if I'm team Will or Faolan for Lilly, but for myself I pick Faolan 😂.
Without giving too much away, I will say this is a must read for lovers of fantasy and slow burn.
Looking forward to book three!

Thank you so much Yana Metro for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of your ARC team and immerse myself in this magical world. 🤍🖤

Book two of the Luminiferos saga delivers everything I hoped for and more. The Darkness Within picks up right where book one left off, and Yana Metro manages a seamless transition that feels both natural and incredibly satisfying. Questions from book one are finally answered, and new threads are woven with precision and intensity.

The tension between the two lethal shapeshifters is electric, and the stakes only grow higher as the story deepens. With each chapter, more of the world and its hidden history unfolds, drawing us further into the conflict—and the emotional journey at its heart.

Yana Metro’s writing style is exceptional—lyrical without being overdone, with just the right balance of internal reflection, action, and dialogue. It kept me fully engaged from beginning to end. Every chapter adds weight and meaning to the overarching saga, and you can feel the momentum building as the characters face even darker truths about themselves and their world.

Themes of self-discovery, fate, and survival continue to resonate strongly, and the romantic elements feel earned and deeply emotional, not just surface-level attraction. I love watching the growth in both plot and character arcs—it’s clear this series is building toward something epic.

✨ A strong, emotionally rich continuation to a beautifully crafted fantasy series. Perfect for fans of dark romantic fantasy, high-stakes magic, and character-driven storytelling.

Spellbinding, sensual, and soul-searing, this tale of survival, sacrifice, and shadowy temptation is a triumph of dark fantasy.

Lilly White's journey is nothing short of breathtaking. Poisoned and hunted, she emerges as a heroine whose fragility and ferocity blend into an unforgettable portrait of resilience. Every venom-marked heartbeat pulses with urgency, pulling the reader deeper into a world where nothing is safe—not even love.

Will, the Raven Guardian, is a masterfully crafted enigma—equal parts protector, sinner, and savior. His chemistry with Lilly crackles like lightning on the edge of a storm. But just when you think you've unraveled the emotional knots between them, along comes him—the jade-eyed force of nature who shifts the very laws of reality. His presence is a delicious danger, a haunting seduction that dares Lilly (and us) to ask: how far would you go to save yourself?

With lyrical prose and a plot that thrums with tension, this story dances along the edge of ruin and redemption. It explores the price of power, the allure of darkness, and the staggering cost of hope. Fans of Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone or Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses will find themselves right at home—only to discover this world holds its own, deeper magic.

A breathtaking debut (or installment), this is the kind of book that keeps you up at night—and lingers long after the last page.

Five stars. An absolute must-read.

first and foremost, thank you very much to Yana Metro and her team for allowing me to be on the 2024 arc team for this book (im a week late 🫢) I did read book one of this book prior to reading this one obviously and the first thing that got me was the fact that it was pretty much twice as long when I saw this book at least in e-book format was 620 pages I did not know how this was going to go, considering the length jumped substantially.

If you read the first book, then you know, we continue following Lily as our female main character on her journey to find Luminiferos. When I tell you, I absolutely loved this book. I knew very early on that this was a five star read for me and nothing less. The way this author writes is amazing and so beautiful the way she puts words together, the way she describes this world and the way that she gives life to her characters. Nothing was spared in this book. All that I could have wanted from the story, was there and more that I didn’t even know I needed. I was simultaneously on the edge of my seat, breathless, near tears and giggling. This book includes all of the emotions without being overly spicy, which was a plus for me. I cannot explain how excited I am to continue story. for those of you who are not aware this is from what I understand a seven part series.

I had so much fun reading this. High stakes, lots of tension and interesting world building.

Although Lilly’s character annoyed me at times with her recklessness and impulsiveness, I think it all came to a head in the last 100 pages where she puts it all to good use. Lilly’s character development and the development of her powers was quite the journey and I loved seeing her accept her darkness and come into herself.

Her relationship with Will is messy and complicated but it felt real and I loved that. The miscommunication was ripping me apart at times though, mostly on Lilly’s part and her refusal to see others point of view. A stubborn girl for sure 😂 We’re introduced to Faolan Frost, Lilly’s new mentor and so ensues a love triangle (though mostly on Faolan’s side). I don’t have any strong feelings towards Faolan, he’s a different character than we’ve seen so far, but as for any romance, I would need more from him 😅

Pacing was a bit slow for me and the book probably could have been shorter to combat that, the first and last thirds were okay but the middle seemed a bit dragged out.

The ending devastated me but I’m still holding onto hope. Team Will all the way - but he’s going to have to do some serious grovelling.
