Joorsu ‘Jay’ Melles is a jaded veteran recently retired from the Jungle, uneasy in polite society, uncertain what to do with his life.
1734 is the registration number of the alpha male he purchases for companionship.
‘Seven’ is an iota-alpha, the ninth iteration of designer males originally created for the battlefield. Engineered with excess testosterone, greater size, and greater strength, they are magnificent soldiers - but all that ability comes with unintended side effects.
Side effects such as a knot, and the desire to use it.
When each generation of alphas is phased out for the next, the excess supply is recycled back into society for domestic pleasures. They are retrained, reconditioned, made passive. Once their training is complete, they can be had for a fee.
There is no greater proof of power in this world than an alpha male at your beck and call, but this luxury is not without its dangers.
The danger of awakening the rutting instinct if you do not discipline him correctly.
…and for Jay, the danger of catching feelings for what was supposed to be just property.
Different Breed takes place in a roughly contemporary setting in a world just left of ours. It features elements of omegaverse (there are no omega characters, but heat and mpreg are not out of the question), and sci-fi bio-kink (genetic engineering).
It contains dubious consent, institutionalized sex slavery, war flashbacks, and abuse (not between the two main characters). It is a dark world, but not a dark romance.
This first book can be read and enjoyed as a standalone with a HFN ending. However, the story is ongoing and serialized.
Daniel May writes MM romance and erotica with a focus on dark contemporary, kink, and BDSM. Originally a lover of sci-fi and fantasy, he turned his sights on the erotic as a joke that went over surprisingly well.
Completed series: The Taste of Ink (rereleased as A Fresh Taste of Ink trilogy) Ongoing series: Hanged Men
This was definitely different ... Wow, I'm a bit numb, I think I need to read this a few more times to understand every nuance. So the triggers say: dubious consent, institutionalized sex slavery, war flashbacks, and abuse (not between the two main characters). But this isn't really dark and smutty, somehow it's full of emotion even if it's so insanely difficult to understand what's going on inside of Jay. I am totally fascinated and absolutely need more of it.
He had done nothing to earn this. Seven had no reason to obey him, trust him, desire him, submit to him, and yet did so with the ease of a sugar cube dissolving on the tongue. Leaving nothing behind. 🫠
He would kill— He would KILL anyone who touched Seven. Jay was a killer. He would do it again. He would do it again. The life-changing realization occurred in the literal blink of an eye. 🖤🖤🖤
Loved the world-building, especially Alphas as captives and designed solely for the battlefield and bedroom.
Had a mix of Daniel May's detailed prose, bizarre scenarios, jokes, and Wtfuckery. I was a bit surprised by the insta-love, but I'm rolling with it.

I think I want to call this “intellectual romantic erotica.” There are hot scenes and an almost gentle expression of romance, but wrapped inside a dystopian system of sex slavery. The implications of moral failure permeate the story as the main character obsesses over it. There’s a lot to think about.
In a few words it’s a steamy, passionate and modern book. The only downside of this book is that it’s too short. I would really like for it to be a series.
