In the gritty underworld of New York's criminal elite, Elizabeth Black is no stranger to the shadows. Underground fighting and rubbing shoulders with gangsters were nothing more than a standard Tuesday for her. But when a high-stakes deal unravels, she realizes she's stepped into a realm darker than she ever imagined. There's no escaping the consequences of her actions this time.
After brazenly robbing one of the city's most feared gun syndicates, Lizzy finds herself indebted to its ruthless leader, Ryder Elliot—a man with a penchant for power and control. Yet Lizzy's troubles are more than just financial; they're a tangled web of lies and betrayal.
Ryder and Lizzy's connection is anything but conventional; it's a collision of twisted desires and dangerous obsessions, threatening to consume them both. As they plunge deeper into a world of deception, manipulation, and pride, they must confront the demons that lurk in their past—or risk being consumed by them.
Formerly known as "Semi-Automatic" by Hana Blue C, "When You Lie" is a chilling reimagining of a tale that once held readers in its grip, reaching the coveted number one spot in the action genre on several reading platforms. Do you dare descend into the depths of deceit and desire, where the truth is but a fleeting illusion?

Another great book by Harper! I can’t say enough good things about her newest novel, “When You Lie”. I thoroughly enjoyed it. My absolute favourite thing about this story is Lizzy. She is an independent and strong willed women who doesn’t back down. If you love a strong female lead I highly recommend this book and all of Harpers other books.
If there's one thing Harper is good at is having me so drawn into a character so much that I forget they're not real! seriously, why can't Ryder be real? This book had me in my feels!! I had to stop and come back to it a few times. My emotions were all over the place! Well done!
Just like all her other books HPC had me in my feelings for this one!! I felt like every time the book hit a high point it dove deep down into the depths of 'what in the world just happened' and I was stuck on that roller coaster ride while loving every bit of it! Lizzy and Ryder are something for sure but when you put the two together it's like it's a fiery match made in heaven.
I love how driven Lizzy is. The determination this girl has sets new records and if there's an obstacle in her way you can best believe she's finding a way around it. The underground fighting just to survive says a lot about how resilient she is. I love her bond with her brother and how they try to watch each other's back to the best of their abilities given the situation their father left them in. This book is a must read!!
I loved this book as Semi Automatic and I love it even more now. Harper had my riding emotional waves throughout this book. But I was drawn in again and binge read it. I love how strong and resilient Lizzy is, the bond she shares with her brother ran so deep I could feel it. Throw in watching her relationship with Ryder unfold and their bond and trust grow. It was just wow
Ryder and Lizzy are such a beast duo. I’ve read this book in all forms of it being completed and every single time I’ve gotten to read it, it’s just gotten better! Really, if you’re in the fence about this book just read it. You won’t regret it!
This is an utterly fantastic piece of storytelling that takes the crime genre to new heights. As someone who reads broadly and appreciates strong narratives, I was thoroughly captivated by "When You Lie." Hana's storytelling prowess, which I first admired in her pirate novel "Bold," shines even brighter here. The story is rich in complexity, weaving together themes of power, betrayal, and redemption with an intensity that sets it apart from others in the genre. Hana's ability to craft a narrative that is both thrilling and deeply emotional makes this book a standout, and it quickly became my favorite in the genre of crime novels with a female lead.
At the heart of this compelling narrative is Lizzy, a character who drives the story forward with her fierce determination and resilience. Watching her transformation from a woman seemingly trapped by her circumstances to a survivor who takes control of her destiny is nothing short of remarkable. The supporting characters, from the enigmatic Ryder to the villains Luke and Eli (BOOO!), to the steadfast RJ and Amber, are all intricately woven into the fabric of the story. Hana masterfully develops their relationships and fates, creating a world that feels alive and interconnected. The complexity and depth of these characters add layers of intrigue and emotion, making the story not just a crime novel, but a rich exploration of human nature.
Hana writes with a flourish and passion that is rarely seen in this genre, making "When You Lie" a true treasure. Her prose is sharp, vivid, and brimming with energy, drawing readers in and keeping them hooked from start to finish. The way she intertwines action, suspense, and character development is a testament to her remarkable talent as a storyteller. This story, like Hana herself, is truly unique and stands as a shining example of what the crime genre can achieve. I can't say enough good things about this story and the incredible skill of its author.
