The story of how this book came to be is almost as interesting as the story itself. This is an actual memoir that was lost to the Army historical archives. Sgt Steve Bizic is an American OSS troop who parachuted with his small OSS team into Yugoslavia in WW2. Their mission is to link up with Yugo partisans and take the war to the Germans and Bulgarians. It's a fascinating look at how these men had to build and maintain rapport with some shady partners in an effort to free Europe. Team SPIKE was to liaise with the Yugoslave militia, provide material support via airdropped equipment, and report back on the progress. They did all of this while constantly running from the German Luftwaffa and soldiers on the ground.
Do yourself a favor and read this book. It is outstanding and one you will not be able to put down. Ripped from history, this first-hand account is amazingly detailed and told as only someone who was there could tell it. It really hit home for me as someone who embedded with and advised Afghan soldiers during OEF. I am so glad this was discovered and published, thanks to the Chief for nailing this one....it was perfect! Looking forward the rest of the stories!
Simply an amazing first person collaborated account of OSS operations in the Balkans during WW2.
I heard Mr Waliszewski on a podcast and knew this was a must read. What I did not realize is that this reads like a novel. His editing of this, and backing up of this account with official records such as radio logs, and status reports, etc. is nothing short of incredible.
Most importantly, the reader sees first hand the evils of communism…I don’t believe any of that is embellished
In looking forward to reading more of Mr Waliszewski’s work.
