Rooted in the story of his own transformative journey, a monk and internationally beloved founder of Yoga of Immortals shares the methods he uses to help us tap into our unlimited potential.
Ishan Shivanand was born into an ancient lineage of yogis spanning twenty-one generations, and he spent the first twenty years of his life in a Himalayan monastery. Grounded in the traditions of yoga, meditation, martial arts, storytelling, and herbal medicine, he developed the Yoga of Immortals (YOI) protocol, which is designed to help followers combat stress, anxiety, depression, and create healthy individuals and healthy communities. The Practice of Immortality shares these lessons and practices.
In a world suffering the effects of anxiety, fear, competitiveness, and anger, Ishan encourages us to take a step back. Structured as a thoughtful narrative with practices based in the true intentions and meaning of yoga, The Practice of Immortality will help you achieve that which you never thought possible.

A rare and raw spiritual memoir that goes far beyond self-help—it is a living transmission of Sanatana Dharma, through the voice and vision of a monk shaped by tradition, sadhana, and service.
This book helps the reader move beyond stress, anxiety, and overthinking by offering a direct path inward—towards stillness, clarity, and the realization of one's eternal self. It is not just about healing but remembering.
Ideal for seekers, spiritual practitioners, and anyone disillusioned with superficial fixes or New Age platitudes. Whether you're new to inner work or deep into your journey, this book speaks to the soul.
The Structure of the Book
The Practice of Immortality is divided into four parts, each representing a deepening stage of inner evolution:
Part One: Leaving Paradise (Chapters 1–5) Introduces the foundational themes—how we fall out of alignment with our true self, and how conditioning begins. These chapters blend childhood memories, spiritual awakening, and the early call to sadhana.
Part Two: Mastering the Mind (Chapters 6–11) Focuses on inner conflict, ego, distraction, and the psychological landscape of a seeker. Through deeply personal stories and parables, this section shows how to work with mental patterns and inner duality.
Part Three: Mastering the Body (Chapters 12–18) Brings in yogic tools, breathwork, and the link between prana and perception. These chapters begin to bridge philosophy with physiology, helping the reader embody the teachings.
Part Four: Mastering the Soul (Chapters 19–22) This is the heart of the book—culminating in spiritual integration. Here, the writing becomes more universal and expansive, addressing immortality not as a concept, but as a lived reality.
What Makes This Book Unique The Practice of Immortality is not the story or the work of an academic or a scholar. This is the story of a real life monk who was meticulously and with vision and hard work prepared, trained, groomed and shaped to carry forward the light of Sanatana Dharma and to inject it back into our education, healthcare and society.
This is not the sophisticated writing and story telling of an Ernest Hemingway or VS Naipaul. This is the raw, visceral, rural, earthy, natural autobiography of a modern day Indian monk who was nurtured by the Aravalis, the Himalayas, the ashrams, forests, rivers, gaushalas of India and later the collective experiences of teaching, guiding and transforming millions of lives across all the continents, every major country and city of the world and every major corporate house, university and hospital system you can think of.
This is not the story of a corporate tycoon who gave up his Lamborghini or Porsche to learn under a Himalayan master in a posh modern-day ashram on the banks of Ganga and built a following on social media through high tech marketing. This is a monk whose social media followers are followers of Santana in real life, who have benefited from his teachings, sadhana, guidance and handholding.
This is not the encapsulated wisdom of a man who was lost most of his life and found his way back by reading English translations of ancient Indian texts, shastras and sutras. He is a man who is the outcome of the vision, hard work and tapasya of his father and guru who is an enlightened Siddha - an avadhoota. He is man who understood his swadharma early on jumped in headlong into the river of his life and came out on top!
He is someone who has meditated in the holiest shrines and sthalas of India and most other countries of the world, who has taken a dip in the holiest of rivers around the world, done Seva in the remotest corners of the globe and mastered every martial art known to man. He has given a new meaning to the concept of mastery of mind, body and spirit. A devotee of Devon ke Dev, Mahadev, a worshipper of Lalithamba Parameshwari, a dedicated shisya of his guru, a devoted son of his parents, a sincere guardian of his family of millions. Loved equally by kids, youth, adults and the elderly, he is working tirelessly for the benefit of Santana Dharma, Rashtra, Vishwa and Samara.
This book is not just his story. It represents the spiritual journey of a sadhaka under the watchful, loving and disciplined guidance and tutelage of his Guru. Structured in four parts, the book offers not just reflections, but experiential meditations (Samadhis) at the end of every chapter. Each chapter weaves together a sutra, a personal story, and a practice, making this not just a read, but a sadhana.
Strengths What makes this book powerful is that it is not theoretical. It's lived. Each sentence breathes the air of ancient shrines and global cities alike. From meditating in the holiest of sthalas to taking dips in sacred rivers across the world, to serving in some of the most remote and forgotten corners of the planet—Dr. Ishan's life is a testimony to what mastery of mind, body, and spirit looks like.
And yet, the language remains humble. Approachable. Personal.
For instance: "Even the greediest child learns to wait just one more day for perfection." — On waiting under a mango tree, and learning the rhythm of ripening Or this moment of spiritual memory: "Now I understood why my father was wearing white… In my culture, white is the color worn at the time of death." — A meditation not on fear, but surrender This book is deeply devotional too—offering glimpses into the author's love for Mahadev, his worship of Lalithamba, his surrender to his Guru Avdhoot Shivanand Ji, and his unwavering dedication to Rashtra, Vishwa, and Dharma.
And at the heart of it all, what truly shines is the emphasis on sadhana. Dr. Ishan is not a philosopher with opinions—he is a practitioner with direct experience. The practices he shares aren't borrowed or imagined; they come from decades of training, austerity, and inner realization. Memorable Moments from the Book
The Mango Tree Meditation In one chapter, a young Ishan and other children visit an ancient mango tree every day in the summer, eagerly checking to see if the fruit has ripened. They learn to wait—not because someone teaches them to—but because nature does. It's a simple but profound lesson in divine timing. "We all learned to wait just one more day. Even the greediest child did."
The Crow That Woke Him Up One day, the author is sitting at his desk, lost in daydreams of the time he received shaktipat. Suddenly, a crow appears and screeches at him—waking him from his trance like Kakkbhushundi, the divine bird-sage of Indian lore. He looks down and finds scriptures his father left for him. The message is clear: it's time to move from dreaming to doing. "The crow, like Kakkbhushundi himself, had come to wake me up."
Meditation on Death In Chapter 5, his father walks into the meditation hall dressed in white. He announces that they will meditate on the final journey—death. It's not a moment of sorrow, but of immense peace and spiritual insight. "Now I understood why he was dressed in white. In our culture, white is worn at the time of death."
The Baby Who Cries at Birth In Chapter 6, a saint explains that a baby cries at birth because it remembers the bliss it left behind. The author likens this to his own sorrow after being separated from his childhood monastery during a flood. "I, too, felt like that child—snatched away from serenity, suddenly thrown into the noise of the world."
The Balloon and the Ego In Drinking the Poison of Ego, the author explains how he began using his spiritual powers to fulfill desires. The more energy he received, the more his ego grew—like collecting balloons. But each balloon took him farther from his truth.
"The more balloons I collected, the greater the false identity." The Guru and the Mantra Race A playful story: monks compete to see whose mantra travels the farthest. The Guru laughs and tells them they'll need to beat Bhagwan Dakshinamurti, whose mantra has traveled for 20,000 years. It's light, but powerful reminding us that true impact transcends time.
Minor Weaknesses Readers seeking a quick "how-to" guide might find the book too poetic or slow. There are no lists, no hacks. But to see that as a weakness is to misunderstand the nature of this work. Its strength is its pace—each word asking you to pause, reflect, and breathe. I observed that the publisher has made some mistakes in printing, especially the Sanskrit quotes written in Devanagari but decided to cut them some slack since the book is originally published in the USA. I have sent in my list of suggested corrections to the publisher.
Overall Evaluation
The book makes for a highly engaging read and is likely to become the new "Autobiography of a Monk". What is great about this book is that it actually gives you meditations you can practice (at the end of every chapter). Ishan Shivanand is all about Sadhana - a little bit of theory and a lot of sadhana. And this is evident when you read the book. It is obvious that he is writing from his own direct experience and sadhana Vs concepts and ideas picked up from other books and writings. The Practice of Immortality deserves to become the new Autobiography of a Monk. Not only does it tell the story of a modern-day yogi, it also offers practices for the reader to walk the path themselves. What makes it even more valuable is its grounding in authentic Indic wisdom—not intellectualized, but internalized. If you are someone who has already been doing sadhana, kriyas and yogic practices you will be able to immediately relate to what the author is talking about. If you are not in that category then the book is a great introduction to walking that path.
Recommendation This is not just a book. It is a map to a spiritual journey you also can undertake. It is a great introduction to practical spirituality, especially for the youth and the uninitiated. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to go beyond concepts and experience true inner transformation. Especially recommended for students of yoga, seekers of dharma, and anyone weary of shallow spirituality.
If you're ready to stop reading about sadhana and start living it, this is your book. Read it slowly. Practice what it offers. And remember—you're not just reading a story. You're walking alongside a living tradition.
Tips: Don't go in with judgment and with a critical eye to find faults. Soak in the wisdom and insights and use the full imagination of your mind to visualize the events, incidents and occurrences of the author's life and see how you can correlate it to your own life and what lessons you can learn.
I have read only a first few chapters of the book, and being an occasional reader, I have never found myself taking this level of interest in any other book. One moment it makes you laugh; the other moment, it makes you cry tears of gratitude for your guru. I found guidance for a few questions I had been stuck on for so long. And undoubtedly, it will answer all your questions too. I felt like I was glued to it, I couldn't stop reading midway. It feels like this book is a treasure. An unlimited treasure of guidance and knowledge. I read a chapter twice, and the emotions I felt each time were different, the guidance I received was different. It gives you a sense of peace. And more than that, Ishan Ji has narrated everything so beautifully. You can truly relate and understand what has been written. While the content is extraordinary, it has been conveyed in such a way that you can easily grasp it. With each chapter, it feels like your inner self is growing. At the end of each chapter, there is a samadhi practice, which has been well instructed. It has personally helped me 'actually' absorb and process what I had read in that chapter. My utmost gratitude to ShivYog Master, Dr. Ishan Shivanand Ji for sharing this treasure with mankind. I feel this book is a gift to humanity. Many people who are stuck in the vicious loop of maya, or are constantly seeking pleasures from the outer world, will find this helpful in evolving. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone out there. This book is indeed a need of the hour. To describe it in brief, it is 'A monk's guide to discovering your unlimited potential for Health, Happiness and Positivity'. Bless you. Happy Reading :)

The Practice of Immortality was one of my most anticipated reads of this year. I was sure it would be a brilliant read and as I read it, my feelings have been justified. I got the book a few days ago and I read it voraciously. To be honest, once you start it, you will have to ration your reading if you want the pleasure of reading this book to last long.
Although this is a book that will be particularly helpful to anyone with a spiritual bent of mind, this should be read by everyone. Not only does this contain life changing advice through anecdotes and the life story of the author, who grew up in a monastery and comes from a great lineage of saints and siddhas, it also has a small yet powerful meditation after every chapter. Loved reading it!
For the earnest spiritual seeker navigating the complexities of modern existence, a profound resonance is often found in texts that speak directly to the soul's yearning for truth and liberation. "The Practice of Immortality: A Monk's Guide to Discovering Your Unlimited Potential for Health, Happiness, and Positivity" by Ishan Shivanand emerges as precisely such a guiding light. The inspiration it ignites is not fleeting but a profound stirring, validating the seeker's inner quest and illuminating the path forward with renewed clarity.
In a world frequently consumed by the effects of fear, competitiveness, and anger , Ishan Shivanand gently yet firmly encourages a step back, an inward turn. This book arrives as a vital companion, not merely a collection of words, but a living guide for those earnestly walking the path of self-discovery and inner transformation. It offers a sanctuary of timeless wisdom and practical tools, providing a much-needed anchor in an era often fraught with external distractions and internal disquiet. The profound impact it has on the reader is a testament to its ability to speak to the deepest aspirations of the human spirit, confirming the inherent potential within each individual to transcend limitations and embrace a life of purpose and peace.
"The Practice of Immortality" distinguishes itself through its unique and engaging narrative style. It masterfully blends memoir, profound philosophy, and practical self-help, creating a compelling and accessible reading experience. This thoughtful narrative structure makes complex spiritual concepts relatable and digestible for a wide audience, including the discerning spiritual seeker. The book is written "in a way that invites you in — like a warm hug and a wise mirror at the same time" , highlighting its gentle yet profound nature.
For the dedicated seeker, "The Practice of Immortality" is an invitation to a continuous journey of awakening. It is a path of transformation and transcendence that calls out to those seeking a deeper understanding of themselves and the universe. It encourages a renewed vigor, unwavering faith, and boundless enthusiasm, trusting in the inherent wisdom of the true spiritual path and recognizing the immortal spark that resides eternally within their own being. This book will indeed help individuals achieve that which they never thought possible.
I've come across a number of self-help, spiritual, and motivational books, but "The Practice of Immortality" really stands apart. It's not just a book, it's a sacred text! It is a detailed guide to maneuver and navigate life, helping the reader grow and transform with every passing page. The kind of questions that little Ishan had, are very common to arise in everyone's life at some point in time; at times some questions and doubts may arise in your mind as you go through the book. And the beautiful part is that they all get answered as you continue reading. This book is for everyone, whether you are on a spiritual journey, or about to begin one or even if you aren't into spirituality too. This book will brilliantly help one master their true self and guiding them toward unlocking the infinite potential that lies within each one of us. And this story, is not an ordinary life story of a monk, but it's realistic one. It's not the one where he just goes on elaborating about his mystical experiences but is an honest depiction of all the dilemmas, questions, emotional turmoil, existential thoughts that he had and we all do. And it even has openly mentioned the sacred practices (traditionally kept confidential) carried out by ancient rishi-munis in order to achieve self-actualisation. The "Samadhi Sadhna" section after each chapter comes with a guided meditation. It works like calm and peaceful pause, which lets you strengthen the connection with your inner-self on this transformational journey with Dr. Shivanand. This section helps me absorb, reflect, and grow, and prepares me well for the next chapter. Despite being a non-fictional book, Dr. Shivanand has employed some wonderful literary qualities that make it a vibrant and engaging read. 1) Writing style: Very raw, elaborate and detailed descriptions transport you into the divine world painted by Dr. Shivanand through his words in the book. The language is lucid, making it a suitable read for all age groups. The tone is reflective, descriptive and didactic. 2) Imagery: The raw records of Dr. Shivanand's life are rife with vivid imagery, helping you expand and master your power of imagination too. The beautiful blend of descriptive writing style and visual imagery, made the book feel like a journey where you are actually living with him in the monastery and experiencing everything through the lens of little Ishan. 3) Use of conceit: A creative and thoughtful literary technique which involves using extended metaphors and symbolism to convey the ideas is consistent throughout the book. Dr. Shivanand recounts various conversations between him and his father and Guru, whom he lovingly calls "Babaji". Dr. Shivanand's narration and Babaji's teachings to inquisitive, little Ishan are grounded in taking everyday, ordinary examples from the surroundings and solving even the most complex questions by explaining them in simplest manner. A major part in the chapters draws upon symbolism and metaphors which adds to its literary quality and leads readers to a thought-provoking state of reflection. It's a book that will take you on the journey of self-transformation. Kudos to Dr. Ishan Shivanand for writing such a brilliant masterpiece that's going to revolutionise this genre of self-help books and will inspire contemporary world and the generations to come. For it truly is, as the subtitle says, "A Monk’s Guide to Discovering Your Unlimited Potential for Health, Happiness, and Positivity".
A Deeply Grounded and Emotionally Empowering Guide to Inner Transformation
The Practice of Immortality by Ishan ji is a profound and timely contribution to the field of mental wellness and spiritual development. In a world increasingly shaped by distraction, anxiety, and disconnection, this book stands out as a deeply compassionate and methodical guide toward mental clarity, emotional healing, and sustained inner strength.
A Holistic Redefinition of Immortality
At the heart of this work is a powerful reimagining of what “immortality” truly means. Rather than promising physical permanence or mysticism, Ishan ji introduces the Mahakaal state—a timeless awareness where the mind is liberated from stress, fear, and the pressures of linear time. It is a concept rooted in ancient yogic understanding, yet presented with remarkable clarity for the modern reader.
Professional, Practical, and Emotionally Intelligent
Ishan ji’s background—as both a monk and a mental health researcher—gives the book a rare duality: it is both spiritually rich and clinically aware. He offers a structured, repeatable system—the Yoga of Immortals (YOI) protocol—that has already been implemented in diverse environments, from hospitals to corporations to military settings. The techniques are accessible: breathwork, visualization, and meditative practices that can be easily integrated into even the busiest lifestyle.
What elevates this book is its emotional sincerity. Ishan ji writes not to impress, but to genuinely uplift. His stories—drawn from his monastic life and global teaching experiences—are authentic and often quietly moving. He speaks to the pain of burnout, the struggle of anxiety, and the silent battles we all face in our minds. Yet, the tone is never patronizing or overly simplistic. Instead, it is empowering and respectful of the reader’s own journey.
Structure and Language
The writing is thoughtful, clear, and occasionally poetic. The book is well-organized, guiding the reader from foundational ideas to deeper practices without overwhelming them. Each chapter builds gently upon the last, encouraging gradual transformation rather than instant change.
A Few Considerations
While deeply effective, the book may challenge those unfamiliar or uncomfortable with Eastern philosophical terms like “Mahakaal” or “immortality of the soul.” However, even these concepts are demystified through practical explanation. Readers who approach with openness will likely find themselves not only informed but deeply moved.
Final Thoughts
This book is not just a read—it is a practice, a mindset, and, above all, an invitation to rediscover the part of ourselves that is unshaken by time, trauma, or uncertainty. It is especially recommended for professionals experiencing high stress, individuals navigating emotional transitions, or anyone searching for a sustainable approach to mental and emotional balance.
The Practice of Immortality is a gift—one that I will return to many times, not just for guidance, but for grounded, gentle strength. Highly recommended.
"The Practice of Immortality" by Ishan Shivanand Ji is not just a book it’s a divine experience that resonates deep within the heart and soul.
I have never been a reader, but after glancing at the book and its first page, it clearly reflects being written with so much love and compassion for the readers. This book has become very close to my heart. The teachings are timeless, and the wisdom and bliss are boundless. The lessons that could take a soul many lifetimes to learn are presented openly in this book. I am trying to grasp and learn from it. Bliss, grace, something divine, something magical flows from every line, every paragraph, and every page, urging me to read the entire book continuously at once. Each story, lesson, chapter, and experience is narrated with such depth and clarity and carries a kind of powerful divine bliss and wisdom something that cannot be expressed in words that I felt transported into those sacred moments, living them as if they were my own, or as if I was also present there in all those moments. The book has become my spiritual time machine, allowing me to bask in the divine radiance of moments I was not physically present for, yet now experience with full heart-awareness Through this book, I am living and feeling those precious divine moments with Ishanji and Babaji
My Favorite Part: Chapter 1 - Pursuing the Path of Oneness I have immersed completely in this chapter... Lost in the beauty and description of the sacred beauty of the Rajasthan ashram (monastery). I wish I could go back in time and visit there once. The descriptions have planted a sacred seed in my heart and soul, may destiny carry me there one day to kneel and bow my head on that holy earth of my guru, mahasidha and mahadev (bhairava) and to breathe the air of that sacred atmosphere. Until then, it lives in my heart forever.
The teachings, knowledge, bliss, wisdom, and transformative ancient Eastern meditative techniques revealed by Ishan Ji—received from his master Babaji, transmitted and sustained through their sacred lineage of 21 generations of great ascended masters (Guru Parampara) are so profoundly and beautifully explained in this book that it feels like a direct, magical transmission of divine energy, effortlessly guiding the seeker into deep, trance-like meditative states while reading and for hours afterward.
The spiritual techniques shared are transformative, offering the best guidance for those seeking wisdom, inner love, happiness, peace, health, and success and for any seeker on the path of enlightenment. They have the power to bring positive transformative changes to the lives of countless readers.
Truly, it is a divine gift and eternal blessing to humanity for ages and infinite generations to come!
🙏🏻 Thank you, Ishan Shivanand Ji, and Babaji, for this divine masterpiece. Thank you for sharing those precious and divine moments, stories, and experiences of your life through this book. Thank you for this blessing! 🌈💫✨️🌠🌌
Dr. Ishan Shivanand’s "The Practice of Immortality" is an enlightening journey into the heart of spirituality, one that beautifully blends philosophical insights with practical wisdom. From the very first page, the book captivates with its profound simplicity and its invitation to explore a life that transcends the ordinary, not in a distant or abstract sense, but through daily, mindful practices.
What struck me most about this book is the deep sense of gratitude it evokes. Dr. Shivanand gently guides the reader to recognize the eternal within the transient, encouraging us to connect with the divine within ourselves and all around us. The book offers a roadmap to immortality—not as a literal, physical continuation, but as an awakening to the eternal presence of our soul. It is a practice of being present, grounded, and connected to the infinite energy that flows through us.
The emotional impact of this book is significant. As I read, I found myself reflecting on life’s purpose, the transient nature of existence, and the infinite potential of the human spirit. It invites you to step away from the chaos of the world and embrace inner peace, helping you to realize that immortality is not about living forever, but about living fully in the present, with gratitude for each moment.
There’s a sense of calm that fills the space between the words as Dr. Shivanand’s teachings encourage a profound shift in how we see ourselves and our relationships with others. The practices outlined are not lofty or difficult to grasp but are rooted in simplicity—daily meditation, mindfulness, and the cultivation of compassion. It’s a gentle reminder that immortality is not something far away in the future, but something that can be experienced right here, right now, in every breath we take.
In many ways, this book is a love letter to life itself. It teaches us to be grateful for what we have, to live with purpose, and to tap into the infinite reservoir of love and light that resides within. Dr. Shivanand writes with such clarity and emotion that reading this book feels like a conversation with an old friend, a reminder of the deep truths that we often forget in our busy, everyday lives.
"The Practice of Immortality" is not just a book—it’s a journey that will leave you feeling emotionally uplifted and spiritually enriched. It inspires you to live with a heart full of gratitude, knowing that immortality lies not in escaping life, but in embracing it fully, with all its beauty and challenges.
Practice of Immortality by Dr. Ishaan Shivanand is not just a book—it is a profound spiritual journey. From the very first page, I found myself completely captivated. Written in such simple, accessible language, the book gently yet powerfully unveils the deepest truths of existence. It was truly an eye-opener. I found myself clinging to every word, squeezing even the smallest free moment from my day just to read, re-read, and absorb the layers of meaning woven into each page.
So engrossed was I, that during my online classes, I would secretly hope my students joined a bit late—just so I could finish one more page… and then another, and another.
One of the most striking metaphors in the book is that of the good and the bad wolf. How simply, yet truthfully, Dr. Shivanand reveals that it is we who unknowingly nourish the bad wolf through our thoughts. The depth of this realization hit me hard.
I felt every tear the author shed when the rains fell relentlessly, destroying everything in their path. My heart ached and tears streamed down my face when Shanti could not be saved. Like him, I found myself asking Babaji why this was happening. And then I read the line—all are His forms: birth, maintenance, and death. That moment sparked an inner awakening. Yes, the circle of life never stops spinning.
The chapter Balloon Tied to Your Toe was another turning point. The question “Who am I?” echoed within me. Am I just a teacher? A good cook? An entrepreneur? These identities that I cling to—are they really me? As I read further, encountering the concepts of ignorance, egoism, attachment, hatred, and clinging to the body—I realized how entangled we are in these illusions, never truly pausing to ask who we really are.
The book also recounts the time when Dr. Shivanand met with a serious accident. Despite immense pain and immobility, he used that time to dive deeper into the truths of existence. That strength, that courage, that light he shares—it is nothing short of inspiring.
Facing the “dark passenger”—the apasmara—is something I’m still meditating on. There’s so much depth in that one realization alone.
Bhaiya, I have no words to thank you for this gem of a book. It feels like a gift, a light guiding my soul. Though I have been associated with ShivYog for a year, reading Practice of Immortality made me feel like you’ve always been right beside me, silently guiding and holding my hand through life.
Please continue to bless us with your wisdom and love. Namah Shivaya. Reena Jain
Ishan Shivanand’s The Practice of Immortality is a deeply personal account of his journey from the quiet discipline of a monastery to a life of teaching and guiding others across the world. The book blends memoir with instruction, weaving together stories from his childhood, lessons from his gurus, and modern applications of ancient yogic wisdom. The book argues that immortality is not about living forever in the body but about changing our relationship with time, shedding illusions, and learning to live in the present moment. Shivanand introduces practices of breathwork, meditation, and reflection, offering not just philosophy but tools that readers can try for themselves.
I enjoyed the storytelling in this book. The writing is simple, yet it carries weight. He doesn’t drown the reader in technical language. Instead, he paints vivid scenes of life in the monastery, of starlit skies and desert sands, of lessons handed down by his father. These stories are balanced with real-world encounters, like meeting seekers from abroad who came chasing legends of mystical herbs. That mix of sacred tradition and modern longing for meaning makes the book relatable, even when the ideas are lofty. At times, I felt swept away by the rhythm of his words. Other times, I had to pause because the thought itself demanded reflection.
Shivanand circles back to the same themes: time, illusions, the immortal self, and each return felt like another layer being added. Rather than skimming past big ideas, he makes sure they sink in. The rhythm is steady and deliberate, almost meditative in itself, which mirrors the practices he describes. His sincerity shines through on every page. There’s no sense of showmanship, no jargon to hide behind. Instead, it feels like sitting with someone who has lived these lessons and is sharing them with quiet honesty. That tone drew me in and made me more receptive.
I think this book is best suited for readers who are searching for something deeper than self-help hacks or quick fixes. It’s for those who are willing to sit with a story, to think about what it means, and maybe even to try the practices woven into each chapter. If you’re curious about the intersection of ancient wisdom and modern life, or if you’ve ever felt the pressure of time and wished for a way to step outside it, this book has something to offer. I walked away with a sense of calm, a reminder that the immortal self is not something to find far away, but something already inside me, waiting for attention.
I would call this book a Timeless Companion for the Mind and the Soul. Here are First Impressions by a JEE Mentor
As someone who has spent the last 7 years mentoring some of the brightest minds in India for the IIT-JEE, I am deeply attuned to the intense mental strain students carry on their shoulders. Every year, I meet thousands of aspirants—intelligent, driven, but often riddled with anxiety, sleeplessness, self-doubt, and performance pressure. So when I picked up The Practice of Immortality by Ishan Shivanand, I wasn’t just reading for myself—I was searching for answers that could help my students too.
From the very first few chapters, I realized this isn’t just another "spiritual" book. It’s an operating manual for the inner world—written in a language that’s deeply rooted in yogic wisdom, yet astonishingly relevant for modern minds. The practices and reflections offered here aren’t abstract ideals. They are practical tools, refined from centuries of ancient Himalayan traditions, presented in a way that even a stressed-out teenager or an overworked professional can grasp and practice.
What struck me most is how seamlessly Acharya Ishan Ji bridges the scientific temperament with meditative depth. As someone who teaches Physics daily, I found the book’s approach both rational and elevating. He doesn’t preach—he guides. Every chapter ends with a Samadhi Sadhana, a short meditation that brings the teachings to life. I’ve started practicing them myself and already feel a sublte but noticeably powerful shift—less noise in the mind, more stillness.
For students especially, this book can be life-changing. It teaches emotional resilience—something our syllabus doesn't cover but life demands every day. For parents, it offers a new lens to understand the internal worlds of their children. And for mentors like me, it’s a refreshing reminder that true success comes not just from marks, but from mental balance and soulful clarity.
To anyone walking a high-pressure path—be it academics, corporate, or personal—The Practice of Immortality offers a mirror and a method. A mirror to see who you truly are beneath the layers of stress, and a method to reintroduce calm, clarity, and spiritual confidence in your life.
Highly recommended. Not just to read, but to live.
There is nothing as precious as a human birth. And for a human being, realising our true existence is the most essential purpose as that is only possible in human birth.
In this journey towards our Real Immortal Self, The guidance & grace of the Spiritual Master is the only assistance available as Master is the one, who has completed his/her journey. He/She knows the ups/downs, challenges that come along. While not everyone's journey is same, but lessons from a master's journey are not only full of practical wisdom but really inspiring.
From the time I started my journey, I read many biographies and auto-biographies of saints. Some of them were "Vivekanada on Himself", "Acharya Ramchandra ji ki Atmakatha" , "Autobiography of a Yogi", "If Truth be told", "Play of Consciousness" and "The Churning of the Heart"
While each one has been a contributor on this Inner Journey, very few share details of important events along with the thoughts and emotions master experienced during those events or the inner challenges felt during spiritual practices.
This is what makes this book unique and a real guide and blessing for any seeker. Even for a non-seeker, this book will inspire them to start on the their journey towards their immortal self.
Books is organised into short chapters, each having wisdom of the master, the inner churning of thoughts and emotions along with an important event that happened in Ishan ji's own journey. At the end of each chapter, there is instruction for practice.
There are amazing wisdom from the Master e.g. Page 26: The second delusion is 'What is in front of me is the only truth'
There are deeply emotional moments like Page 31 And I would call out to the sun, "If there is anybody listening, help me. Save my brother.....I prayer with all the passion an eight-year-old child can muster....I was ready to do anything to save my brother, but I didn't know what".
There are deeply spiritual experience like in Page 48-49, Page 97-99 ...
and sharing of the challenges like Chapter 10-11.
This sharing, blessing by the Ishan ji is really a gift for every human.
For me it is like reading chapters again & again, each time getting filled with a joy and enthusiasm.
Wishing you the very best in your inner journey.
May be you become the peace, you become the light.
This book is utterly magical and an immediate mystical masterpiece for anyone who is spiritually curious, or already deep on the spiritual journey of exploring the depths of their inner workings.
From the second, I cracked the book open to the last page in the book, I did not want to put it down. I wanted to learn every single thing and pick up every single knowledge that was written on each page as soon as I possibly could. I followed along the whole journey with Ishan Shivanand, with each page teaching me a profound lesson along the way. Ask questions arose while reading the book immediately and answer came within the next couple pages. And truthfully, many questions I had about the spiritual path, as being someone who’s been on the journey for almost 20 years now, were revealed to me as I turned the pages and followed the journey of this great master. One by one questions came and melted away, and I was left with profound answers that will continue to change and involve my journey as I progress down the spiritual path.
I highly, highly, highly recommend this book to anyone. It is an immediate classic that will live amongst the greats written about the spiritual path. Genuinely, this book will come to be regarded a kin to Yogannda’s Autobiography of a Yogi. But for me, this book was written in a much more relatable and easier to follow manner that allowed me to connect with each lesson as I turned the pages. And the lessons in this book were not very deep, but they lived right on the surface easy for anyone to pick up, whether they’re open to it or not. As I turned through Paige after Paige my heart, my mind and my soul felt so connected to the journey that Ishan Shivanand was relating as he went through the journey it was almost as if I was right there with him, going through this journey and learning the lessons that he learned on his path, right alongside him.
This book is absolutely worth multiple reads to fully grasp the deep wisdom that Ishan Shivanand stitched through each page.
Do yourself a favor and buy a copy today. And by an Audible copy too, as Ishan Shivanand narrated this book so beautifully, and hearing his journey through his own voice was absolutely mystical, and only aided to the depth and the profoundity within the pages that he scribed.
