Gabby

When my sister and brother-in-law agreed to chaperone a school trip to another country for my niece and nephew, I assured them I’d be okay while they were gone. I’d been living on my own in a different city since I started college several years ago. I was in the middle of my last semester of school and couldn’t take the time off to go with them. My sister gave me her friend’s phone number and told me to call him if I needed anything while they were gone. I agreed to her request and took his number, thinking I’d never need to use it. A few days later, when I heard someone’s footsteps in my house, I hid in my closet and called him immediately.

Byte

When Keegan asked me to listen out for her younger sister while she and Shaker were out of town, I happily agreed. Gabby had never been a problem. She worked as a nurse at the hospital in Cedar Valley and was in school to become a nurse practitioner. She was too busy to get into trouble. I assumed I wouldn’t hear from her at all during the two weeks they would be gone. When Gabby called me to tell me she was hiding in her bedroom because someone was in her house, I couldn’t get to her fast enough. Neither one of us knew that one phone call would bring secrets to light and change both of our lives forever.

Too many mistakes, couldn’t remember who everyone was, again with crazy plots.

Way too many mistakes ruined it, and the writing felt really clunky. Gabby and Byte’s ‘romance’ felt really weird. One minute they’re just friends then they’re tearing each others clothes off and I didn’t believe in their love. I didn’t realise when I first started reading this book that it carries on from the Blackwings series. I don’t understand why it’s a separate series, as I couldn’t remember who everyone was and it’s really confusing. It made it a lot worse as it describes at the beginning of the book that her sister and her husband went away, and told her to ring Byte if needed. It says that she hardly knows Byte and he’s her sister and brother in law’s friend. Yet Gabby was adopted by her sister at age FIVE, so she grew up around the Mc and is really close to them all! 😡 When someone breaks into Gaby’s house she phones Byte and it’s decided that he will stay with her to protect her. As more things happen to Gabby it brings her and Byte closer together, and they fall in love.

Byte has a troubled background and the Mc helped him to rebuild his life. We never really get to know much about Byte and he felt really one dimensional, so did Gabby. As Gabby’s father was a senator who is prison for human trafficking, I would have liked to know more about how she grew up.

There are many many mistakes in this book sadly. While I did enjoy parts of it, the mistakes spoilt it.
🔵 Byte is only 14, and pretending to be 18, when he first joined the Mc. I’m sorry but I didn’t believe that.
🔵 Gabby remembers a little boy who was often at her house and he was horrid to her. Later on it turns into a little girl.
🔵 They adopt a dog that they found, but never put up any posters or check he isn’t owned by someone, or take it to the vets!
🔵 Gabby was adopted by Shakey and her sister Teagan when she was five. At the beginning of the book she seems like she doesn’t know the Mc. Yet later on she’s really close with them.
🔵 Why if she was so young does she not calls her sister her mother? As she’s the only one she’s ever known and she treats her like her mother.
🔵 What does Byte do as a job? He never works! He does the occasional search on the computer but nothing else.
🔵 Where are all the other members of the Mc like Dash, Duke etc? They’re never even mentioned.

I could go on but I won’t. Yes I enjoyed it but some of it is beyond ridiculous.

I struggled a bit with the plot and the two main characters in this book. It’s the first book I’ve read by Ms. Brooks, and I like her writing style, her word choices; she writes in a way that is easy and inviting to read. The problem I had with Gabby and Byte was their relationship which was a warm friendship, but I did not feel the love. There are a great many characters in this story and the relationships among them seem elaborate. The Character List at the beginning of the book is helpful in sorting them out.

The story is convoluted with more detail than is necessary for the tale that is told. On the surface, it’s a simple story: a young woman (Gabby) is being stalked, and she calls for help from a family friend (Byte) whom she has known for several years. He arrives to provide support as a bodyguard and MC/family friend. All are a part of the Blackwings MC family. Love blooms between the woman and her bodyguard as they get to know each other better and her stalker gets more daring. It all ends well with an HEA.

That’s the story. But…there is so much more thrown at us. At the beginning of the book, Gabby states, “I didn’t know him [Byte] very well since I only saw him at club functions, but he seemed like a nice guy.” But as the story progresses and relationships are developed, it seems that they knew each other fairly well. Her family and the MC are close-knit and intertwined.

Another disconnect is with an intruder in Gabby’s house. The break-in occurs at the beginning of the book and serves to bring Byte and Gabby together. This intruder comes to her bedroom where she has hidden behind a false wall in her closet. As she tells it, “…my brother-in-law insisted on adding it to my closet when I first moved into the house.” So, it was added only when she was an adult. Her house is again broken into, and her hidey hole contains a message on its inside wall: “I’ll find you next time, bit**.” Everything points to it being the same intruder – but – how did the intruder know about the hidden space? Even at the end of the book when all is revealed, we aren’t told how the intruder knew.

There is an unusual gender switch that I believe is an error. Towards the beginning of the book, Gabby is reliving a traumatic event from her childhood involving a little boy that trashed her room and toys. Later in the book, this little boy becomes a little girl. It feels like a mid-story plot change and this earlier detail was forgotten by the writer and editor(s).

Speaking of plot changes, I have an impression that there were a few of these and the editing was not as smooth as it could have been. I don’t want to say too much because several instances deal with plot spoilers. There are confusions, perhaps deliberate on the part of the writer (but I’m dubious, because the writer does not appear to be heavy-handed), concerning Gabby’s stalker. There are too many holes in her stalker’s story that could have been discovered early on but were not.

Another small disconnect occurs in the middle of the book when we’re told by Byte, “It was the first time I’d seen her [Gabby] really smile since her whole ordeal began.” That’s not entirely true. She smiled at Byte’s cannibal chickens and at Shadow, the dog that adopted them. Some of the best things about this book are the little scenes that occur between Byte and Gabby, and she even laughs on occasion. Her ordeal is onerous, to be sure, but she has also enjoyed her times with Byte.

There’s also a mafia tie-in that has no place in this book. Gabby and Byte needed a safe place to stay, and they are suddenly thrust into an empty house on the estate of a mafia kingpin. What? Very odd. And I have to wonder again…why? Is this another plot change where some of the previous plot was left behind after the removal of something that explained this new happening? I don’t know, but the introduction of these characters is unnecessary to the plot.

There are some “oopsies” in the story that pull a reader out of the book. For instance:
 Byte says, “I agreed to listen out for Gabby.” Unless this is a regional patois, this is an unusual turn of phrase. Byte is talking about looking out for Gabby as a favor to Shaker and Keegan (Gabby’s family). He may be referencing his expectation that she would text or call him, but we don’t know this. We do know that he’s looking out for her. So…to listen out for her seems odd and gives a reader pause.

 There is a grammatical error: “I’d never seen him with so little clothes on.” Unless his clothes are too small for him, this should read, “I’d never seen him with so few clothes on.” Both “little” and “few” are quantifiers but are used for different reasons. “Little” is used to reference a single, uncountable noun, as in “a little more, please.” And “few” is used with plural, countable nouns, as in “so few clothes on.”

 End quotation marks are missing: “All right, where should I start, I asked. There should be ending quotation marks after “start.”

 There is a superfluous dialogue from chapter 18:
“Did they give you any trouble?” I asked. [Byte is asking]
“Henny and Penny? No. Lenny? Yes,” she said. [Gabby is answering]

This is the beginning of a section in the chapter and has no context. Byte and Gabby are at Byte’s house. Suddenly, she’s apparently been somewhere…we don’t know where. And Henny, Penny, and Lenny are not mentioned anywhere else in the book. Has Byte named his chickens? We don’t know. We’ve no idea what this discussion is about. It is another clue that the plot was perhaps changed, and this little dialogue was left in accidentally. Just guessing, but it makes no sense as it stands.

 There’s a scene in chapter 20 where Gabby has been knocked out with pain medications. Byte explains she’d been given “one of the big boys,” meaning serious pain-relieving drugs. Yet moments later, she’s talking with the doctor, friends, and family members. It’s odd and I wonder if it was again a change in plot. The conversation is an important one and she should not have been given the mega doses if the writer needs her to be cognizant and participating in the discussion.

 The wrong verb is used here: “…my house in Cedar Vally was just sitting there.” That should read, “…my house in Cedar Vally was just setting there.” Animate objects (people, animals) sit; inanimate objects (books, houses) set.

I rated this book 2.5 stars and rounded up because I appreciated and enjoyed Ms. Brooks’ writing. I hesitated on whether to round up or down. While Ms. Brooks’ writing is better than 2-stars, the plot and characters are problematic. While Gabby and Byte’s friendship is well-rounded, their romance feels non-existent. Both Gabby and Byte say they love each other, but it feels like the love of friendship, not of lovers. The sex is sudden and not really expected. As Byte states, “I hadn’t realized how much I wanted her until I was so close to having her.” There’s been no sexual tension. A kiss that Gabby bestowed on Byte earlier in the book went nowhere. Then, they have sex. It’s from Byte’s point of view and not in the least romantic.

My personal preference is not first-person point of view (POV); it feels false. I like third person better. And I don’t like chapters named for the character whose POV is going to be utilized; it feels like what it is, a literary device. It is limiting and seems false. Life isn’t like that. Head-hopping is a topic on which writing classes love to expound. But…when done well by a craftsperson, it can bring characters closer and into the hearts of readers. In a sex scene, for instance, feeling what each participant it is feeling—not just the physical, but the emotional, too—can make the scene soar and show a depth in each character’s nature and make-up. Here, it is from Byte’s perspective and there’s no love on display here. There is a splendid physical release, but he is impatient for Gabby to hurry up so he can be physically satisfied. It was a physical act, void of romance and love.

It may be that it’s necessary to have read the previous Blackwings books to grasp all the relationships—and there’s an overflow of them—but they seem chaotic and often irrelevant to the plot of this book. I’m not sure why all the characters were introduced unless it was to tie up loose ends from previous books. I’d like to read more by Ms. Brooks because of her style of writing, but I’m not sure which of her books to read. I’m not fond of this series’ beginning (the Croftridge location of the Blackwings MC) but I’ll absolutely check out her other books.

Byte & Gabby

I have been in a total book slump and this one dragged me right out of it. Nothing like going back to visit old friends and finding that there are new stories there! I love that Byte found his happily ever after and that it’s with someone we already know. What a wild and crazy story! I loved it and didn’t want to put it down.

Shh...I heard something!

When Gabby hears someone in her house, she calls Byte from the MC. He's a friend of her sister and brother-in-law. They have just left for a trip to Scotland. She's alone and needs help. Byte steps in and helps in everything she needs and much more. The MC is there to make sure she is taken care of but there are bumps along the way.

Great addition to the Blackwings Series

Not sure why the is not considered part of the other Blackwings series unless it is 2nd generation. It is not necessary to read the others but it does include all of those characters from the first series. Great book. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Byte (Blackwings MC - Croftridge Book 1)

Great storyline and back story for both characters.
I'm a nosy person and really want to know what Gabby's bio dad wanted. I'm also wondering if Todd and Lauren will reappear at some point.
5 star read I'm addicted to this series.

An exciting, on the the edge of your seat, thrilling ride to go on with Byte and Gabby. These two were absolutely adorable together. I loved how caring, protective, and loving Byte was with Gabby. These two warmed my heart. With all the chaos happening around them they developed a bond that could not be broken. Fantastic story!

What an awesome read! This book grabbed me from the first page until the last one. I can't wait to read more in this series! Although Byte was older than Gabby, it was not an issue and was only brought up once or twice. Brooks is a great story teller!

Not What I Expect From Blackwings MC

Unfortunately, this was a downer for me! I did a recent re-read of both previous Blackwings series and was reminded of how good it all was, but this entry feels so tonally different from the others. Lacking romance AND heat, this story focuses on the mystery, and the relationship between Gabby and Byte is so underdeveloped. We don’t get any physical descriptions of our two main characters; there is no sense of chemistry or connection between these two, only friendship, then after one hookup, “everyone knows” the two are together and in love?
The complicated conspiracy plot is uninspiring, especially disappointing considering we sacrifice romance for “intrigue,” it’s just not very intriguing. The leap in time to what’s clearly a next generation series, beginning with an extremely complicated “age gap” romance, is so vague.
I really hope Ms Brooks spends a little more time unraveling her plot threads and developing characters for her next entry.

This book is Byte and Gabby’s story. We met Gabby before in Shaker’s story when she was a child.

I liked this, and it was a quick read, but it felt almost clinical? Like it was a description of the events that happened, but we didn’t get any internal thoughts from the main characters at all.

While this one looks like the start of a new series, it's a spin off of the other Blackwings series and you should read it to understand the secondary characters.

From the start this one was cute with Gabby and Byte, not what was happening to Gabby, but the couple. There wasn't really a spark at the start, just Byte helping Gabby and remembering her when she first arrived. The things Gabby was going through was crazy! It all seemed weird, in that how was this happening to her, she was a student trying to finish school and working and the way that things escalated was crazy! It was a good thing she had Byte and the rest of the Blackwings at her back.

The last part with the bad guy was so crazy and over the top, I'm glad that Gabby took her shot when she had it. It was the least the person deserved.

Nice to see this couple living live happy with nothing left to hang over their heads.

Gabby is headed off to college and her older sister Keegan has insisted that if she needs anything to contact Byte for help. Byte shows up when Gabby hears something in her apartment, he doesn't trust that it is a random event and finds himself staying with Gabby. It doesn't take long before they get close, but as the attacks on Gabby become more dangerous can Byte go from protector to her man without putting her in danger?

Another terrific title from this author. I really enjoyed how Gabby grew up and we see a new chapter to the other series. Byte is terrific, he is older than Gabby but they both fully accept each other for who they are. I was riveted, a few surprises to in this one.

byte and gabby

I will start off by saying I hate an age gap so I was relieved to find out that byte was younger than we thought but it’s still very much so an age gap. This story wasn’t really like the rest of the blackwings story in the sense that there was really no build up to the romance there was no steamy scenes and there wasn’t really any chemistry shown between the characters. She very much so just yada yada yada’d over the whole relationship. It read more like a drama with a kiss and a sex scene thrown in. It was so rushed and all of a sudden they were in love and we were just supposed to accept it. I really hope the next book has more of the stuff we actually come to Teagan for.

Byte & Gabby: triggers: stalking, trafficking, drugs, vandalism, kidnapping, hostage taking, assault, domestic violence. Such a good story from start to finish. Gabby is a nurse working towards being an RN and extremely busy so when her family goes as chaperones to Scotland, she has to stay behind. She's given the number to club member and tech guy, byte if anything happens. She wasn't expecting to have to use it, until someone breaks into her apartment with her there. It's a bit of a slow burn but well worth it. I was hooked from the word prologue. It's mysterious, dangerous and very, very hot.

Who knew you needed to hear Shakey Jakey again. Gabby is all grown up and going to school to become a nurse when her life gets crazy scary. Enter Byte to the rescue. And oh, how he rescues her. I really liked how Gabby listened when told to do something for her protection and didn't throw a fit or do something stupid. I also liked her humor. Some of the stuff she said was hilarious. Byte was such a good guy. I'm glad he and Gabby got together. I hope there will be more books in this new chapter. I would like to have Flint's story. I would recommend this book.

I’m new to the author but I devoured the Blackwings MC books in less than a week. I was so excited to see Byte finally get his story as well as catching up with past characters and meeting a new generation.

I was kind of let down with this one. The book felt like it kind of copied Carbon and Harper’s story. The other books had a great balance of spice and solving whatever is happening in the club but this one fell flat with the spice. Although this one wasn’t a favorite, I’ll definitely be reading the Devil Springs spin off and any others that are made.

I’ve missed the Blackwings MC it seems like ages since I got my hands on book in this series.
Time has definitely moved on, little Gabby is all grown up, a qualified nurse and a student nurse practitioner. Keegan, Shaker and Papa Ranger are chaperoning the kids on their school trip to Scotland so being a worrywort Keegan tells Gabby to have her friend and Blackwings computer wizard Byte’s number in her phone in case of emergency. Nobody expects she’ll need to use it until she hears someone in her house.

Good Read

Byte is the first book in the Blackwings MC series and follows Gabby, who after hearing someone in her home who shouldn’t be there calls Byte for help. After chasing her attacker off things start to become more complicated and it appears that there’s more going on that just a random break in.

I found this book to be an enjoyable read. I loved the story and I really liked the twists that led up to the conclusion of the book. The characters were good and grew on me the more I read.

Overall, this was a good read and one I’d recommend.
