Mrs Morneo had just lost her first baby - and it looked as if she would lose her own life too. Her husband had made no idle threat to the doctor involved. Commander Gideon had his hands full - a rapist, food poisoning, gangs of thieves and a murdered doctor.
This is the last of the Gideon books that John Creasey wrote under the J. J. Marric pseudonym. There were another five written by someone else from notes left by Creasey. In this one a night out for Gideon and his wife leads him to a major case, involving people who are prepared to kill to protect their criminal organization if necessary. We get a look at how the food industry works in the UK and how criminals can manipulate it. There are two other cases to be dealt with. One is a husband who has lost his newborn child and wife due to complications of childbirth and as a result has murder on his mind. The other is an escaped rapist who hooks up with a young lady. All three situations are, in the end, brought to somewhat satisfactory conclusion, though not without some death.
An interesting read, so much going on at once, not just one police case, multiple. Despite this it was a quick read and easy to follow. My only negative was that some of it was a little far fetched. I knocked a point off it for that.
