CALLISTA

Having a baby to keep my husband's memory alive—that was the plan.

Love was never part of it.

Then Keegan Russo, the brilliant and infuriatingly handsome doctor assigned to my case, turned my world upside down.

He entered my life to fulfill a promise, but with each moment, my desire for a future with him grows stronger.

Can I let him into my heart, or is my happily ever after lost forever?

KEEGAN

Love and marriage? No thanks. Simple, passionate connections were my specialty.

Until Callista walked in.

A young widow, strong and determined, she challenged everything I thought I wanted. Now, I crave something more—something messy, complicated, and completely forbidden.

But with Callista, I fear I’ll always be second place to a ghost.

M.L. Broome is a bohemian spirit with a New York edge. Her small-town contemporary romances feature smart and sexy heroines over the age of thirty-five, and sizzle with angsty, slow-burn goodness.

Raised on a steady diet of stories, she grew up believing all men should be like Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre—enigmatic yet unflappable in their devotion. Hence, her own brand of book boyfriend was born.

When M.L. isn’t holding one-sided arguments with her characters (she likens it to herding cats), she loves losing herself to nature on her North Carolina farm, one her rescue fur babies by her side.

Her favorite things? Dressing up and kicking back with a glass of wine and a stunning view, soaking up all the experiences that make the soul and senses tingle.

If your looking for your next rip-your-heart-out-and-leave-you-euphoric read, look no further because this is it. I didn’t read this the first time it was published so I can’t compare, but this one is truly special and aptly named.

Here's the set-up. Callista's husband dies, she wallows for eighteen months, barely existing, then decides to unfreeze his previous deposit and have his baby. Except, she never expected Her fertility doctor, Keegan Russo, and she never expected to fall in love with him.

While this may sound simple and succinct, Callista and Keegan's road to forever is anything but. He's a self-proclaimed bachelor who doesn’t want children, and she wants it all, white picket fence included.

There are lots of ups and downs and bumps in the road, and I was invested in every word. Heart-wrenching, emotive, and masterfully written, this story of redemption and second chances will live in your heart long after the last page.

I didn't know I needed a good cry until I sat down to read M. L. Broome's Both Sides Now. This book was filled with such beautiful love stories (and that is no typo--there were two love stories in here.)

The book begins with Callista laying her husband Charlie to rest after he had a vicious battle with cancer. How does one move on after losing a beloved spouse, especially when they were so young? The first part of this story really describes depression and how difficult it is for people around us to sometimes just let us navigate the grief. Broome does an exceptional job as she takes on Callista's journey to returning back to a new normal. The solution is to use her dead husband's sperm to get pregnant so Callista seeks out the best medical professional she can find.

When Callista's path leads her to Keegan's office, he is immediately attracted to her, but as her doctor, she is not only off limits, but he doesn't see himself as a long term relationship guy. He likes Callista for her energy and wit but knows a woman like her is not in his future. As the two spend more time together though, Callista's heart opens up more to Keegan, and Keegan starts seeing how his world could be different as well.

As the two come together in new and meaningful ways, there is still so many times when old traumas of both their pasts rear their ugly heads and cause issues for the couple. The ending is lovely, and I only cried a few times the last part of the book. I did laugh a lot too, because the banter between the characters was always on point.

Have a tissue handy and enjoy this book!

All the feels. Maybe too many feels? This book opens with the funeral following the devastating loss of a spouse, so be forewarned.

Young widow Callista, at a little over a year and a half into her mourning emerges from her funk and decides she wants to become a mother. Due to the fact that she and her late husband had frozen his sperm after a series of miscarriages, she wants to be fertilized by his swimmers. When her physician best friend and his wife refer her to Dr Keegan Russo, the English rose is unnervingly attracted to the very handsome reproductive endocrinologist, AKA the “Baby Maker”.

Jaded, perpetual bachelor, and purposefully childless Keegan is instantly and inexplicably drawn to the wryly amusing Callista despite his etched-in-granite no attachment/no children rule. The pair are repeatedly thrown into each other’s orbit over several weeks’ time, both professionally and personally, and as they are it becomes more difficult to keep things strictly in the friend zone.

When Keegan cajoles Callista into accompanying him as his fake girlfriend to his cousin’s weekend long wedding, lines are blurred.

Can they overcome all their misgivings and emotional baggage and take a chance on something real?

I enjoyed this book very much. It explores with sensitivity dealing with loss and issues of abandonment. My only small criticisms are that a) the FMC is universally venerated for her wit and stunning good looks, a theme which is repeated throughout the book, rendering her otherworldly, therefore difficult to relate to, and b) the villainisation of Megan, the no-strings woman with whom Keegan was engaging as a plus one at the outset of the book: one of my least favorite plot devices is “she’s not like other girls”.

I was furnished an advance reader copy from the author and booksirens, and I’m sharing my honest thoughts.

What an emotional journey! Callista loses her husband to cancer. After 18 months of him being gone. She decides she is going to try to keep his legacy alive by having his child. She makes an appointment with "The baby maker". What she doesn't expect his to be attracted to the doctor, Dr. Russo. Dr. Russo is the classic bachelor. He doesn't want marriage or babies. Because of his abandonment issues. That stem from his father leaving him and his mother. But when they continue to run into each other. They both realize its more than just a physical attraction to each other. For Dr. Russo he is confused on how his feelings have changed the future he didn't think he wanted.
I absolutely loved this book! It was the best book I have read in a while. There was a roller coaster of emotions throughout the book. But they were very realistic to everyday life. There are times when it is completely heart wrenching. So don't forget your Kleenex's. But it is totally worth it! I highly recommend this book. It won't disappoint you!

Oh my! I could really feel Callista's grief when she lost her husband, Charlie. This book ripped my heart apart. I wasn't sure it would get pieced back together, but Callista and Keegan did manage it. Callista meets Keegan when she gets referred to him (he is a well know reproductive endocrinologist). She decides she's ready to have Charlie's baby, wanting his legacy to live on, using the "deposit" they had the foresight to have collected. Keegan and Callista are attracted to each other, but they both have issues to work out, with Callista still dealing with her grief and Keegan with his no commitment, no family/children baggage. I loved how their story punched me in the gut. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Broome's books!

Both Sides Now is a gut-wrenching, second-chance, opposites-attract, romance. Callista is a young widow who lost her husband, Charlie, to cancer 18 months ago. They had several miscarriages so she had frozen some of his deposits, and she decides she wants a baby now. Keegan is a hunky, playboy doctor, a reproductive specialist, who has no desire for love, relationships, and children. Callista and Keegan are attracted to each other, but as she is his patient, she is off-limits. Further, these two had some serious baggage to work through. I laughed and cried. Their banter was witty, and the chemistry was hot. We do get a happy ending, but boy was in quite the roller-coaster ride. I loved it. This was my first book by this author, but hopefully, it was not the last.

Angst, heartbreak, and happy ever after...

This book took angst to a whole new level as it fully immersed the reader in the myriad emotions that grief personifies.

Two broken souls, neither really looking for love until it found them, a simple plan gone awry almost from the get-go, and a rollercoaster of emotions: anger, envy, pain, regret, confusion, loss, tragedy, uncertainty. A handsome doctor and his attention-starved patient.

What could possibly go wrong?

At one point, I considered it might just not be the right time for these two and there would be a second book to pick back up at a later date in time. After all, timing is everything, but finally Callista was able to dig deeper to find herself once more, and Keegan was able to open his heart fully.

This book shows how time and love can heal all wounds and sometimes, it’s good to remember that.

Both Sides Now is a beautifully emotional second-chance romance—with a unique twist. Instead of rekindling a lost love, this story explores what it means to find love again after loss. Callista is a woman learning to live again after years of grief, and her journey is tender, raw, and incredibly relatable. Her connection with Dr. Keegan Russo is immediate, undeniable, and refreshingly mature, with both characters carrying their own emotional baggage.

The pacing is fast, but the character development is rich and satisfying. There’s plenty of heart, just enough steam, and a lovely exploration of vulnerability, healing, and the courage it takes to open your heart again.

If you enjoy emotional, windswept romances with a touch of real-life complexity, this one’s definitely worth picking up.

Both Sides Now by M.L Broome is a heartfelt and engaging story that has beautifully explored the themes of love, self discovery and the complexities of relationships.

From the very first page I was drawn in. The plot is so skillfully constructed where it weaves together the past and present. The book kept a nice steady pace with a smooth flowing narrative.

Each character in the book is amazingly drawn and relatable, whilst also having their own distinct voices and compelling back stories. The journey through love, loss and self discovery is portrayed with authenticity whilst also being completely sensitive.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a story that combines emotional depth, engaging storytelling and relatable characters.

Both Sides Now is a newly re-edited and re-released standalone. Deeply moving and very emotional, it shows the possibility of love after loss and how just one meeting with the right person can change your life forever. Not that Callista and Keegan's road to a HEA was smooth and straightforward. There were plenty of rough patches and a roadblock or two, but the ending made it all worthwile! This book had me smiling and crying, wanting to shake them and cheer them on. It's definitely one for the keeper shelf to be re-read again and again.

I did not read the original version of this story so I don't have anything to measure against but I'm glad for that!

I felt all the feelings in this double love story. There is no other way to describe it but as 2 love stories in one.

Callista made me cry along with her, laugh and even want to shake her in anger a few times. It was tough going through her grief right alongside.

Keegan was so sweet and I really needed to give that man a hug. He put himself out there to love despite his better judgment and it was an absolute roller coaster for him!

The way I felt so many emotions in one book, shows an amazing writer!

This is beautiful story of second loves. Her husband died and after mourning for two years, she decided to try to get pregnant using her late husband's reserved sperm. This book is about how she fell in love again in spite of resisting.

He's her reproductive endocrinologist. He not only has no plan of falling in love. In fact, he resists it with every fiber of his being. This book is about how he fell in love in spite of his resistance.

It's not a quick change, or an easy one, but it is a beautiful one.

WOW this was a great book. It was a steamy page turner and the suspense was incredible intense. I was on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t even put it down. The chemistry and physical attraction between them were spicy hot and tension. Was it love at first sight as he was so intrigued with her beauty. They couldn’t fight the temptation any longer in this passion affair. In this moment it was beautiful and painful. Second Chance at love and romance and happiness.

I definitely recommend this book and you won’t be disappointed.

The story opens where Callista has lost her husband to cancer. She goes into a black hole of grief, not really living. One day she decides to unfreeze her late husband's sperm and have a baby. Her friend recommends Dr. Keegan Russo, not just for his fertility expertise but he is gorgeous. He is not looking for anything serious, he has a friend with benefits. He believes he is not made for a long term relationship.

This is a very emotional read, dealing with grief and finally making the decision to move on but may or may not have chose the wrong man.

Emotional read depicts dealing with sudden loss, heartbreak, and finding yourself and love again. Fast paced. The only thing that didn't sit right is that the author seemed to forget location. Her late husband was buried in Manchester she made a point in the introduction of stating FMC didn't fight his parents in returning his body to their home town from where they lived in America. She then goes back to America where she meets the MMC but towards the end of the book they visit her late husbands grave as if he's not buried in a different country. And mention how her friends visit monthly to his grave to leave flowers despite also not living in Britain anymore. It just lost me.

This is an entertaining, thought provoking book that grabs your attention and your heartstrings from the start and holds it till the very end. The storyline is intriguing and interesting as the elements unfold. The characters are well-developed with depth to their personalities and have steamy magnetic chemistry. There are barriers and challenges to their relationship having a chance, but they work together to overcome those. Tears were shed in the reading of this book, but worth it. I enjoyed this book. Highly recommend.

Emotional read.

Wow - this one will put you through the wringer. Callista and Keegan meet under professional circumstances as the young widow wants to use her late husband's "deposit" to have his baby and Keegan is the doctor she is referred to.

He is dead set against having a family, but these two start to fall for each other.

Their road won't be easy. Their pasts...their situation...all will complicate moving forward. I love second chances and while a bit gut wrenching - this was a worthy read.

Widow Calista feels horrible guilt about moving forward with her life after Charlie’s death. Keegan is a fertility specialist she decides to use, but they form a connection and have inappropriate interactions for doctor and patient, but can’t seem to stop. The way she kept pushing him away made me feel awful for him. She is almost intentionally misunderstanding things to keep him away while expecting him to take all the relationship risks. I like that her best friends call her out.

4.5 stars!!

From losing one love and suffering grief to no end, to finding another love. I have no experience of losing a spouse. But I feel this book does a great job encompassing the many many hardships that come along with grief, and with finding love again after losing someone who you thought you’d spend forever with. It wasn’t just a lovey dovey rainbows and butterflies love story. This book gives you all the ups and downs and all the realities that come with relationships and grief. All the things you have to do to fight for the ones you love. How you have to learn on your people when you’re down. I laughed, I oogled, I cried. It was great and such a perfect vacation read!

ARC Review:
Going in to this book I was a little hesitant to read it because of the tropes present, but something about the blurb really caught my eye. And I'm glad I took the risk and read it. This book is amazing, heart wrenching, sading; just entire roller-coaster of emotions that I loved. While I'm not the biggest fan of the FMC pinning, or even the main couples relationship struggling is a sense it was written so amazingly and captivating, I found a way to love it in a sense.

tear jerker

I’m usually a no emotion, straight face reader but this book legit had me sobbing. It broke my heart wide open and then mended it back up. This book was an emotional rollercoaster between grief, moving on, grief and love. This is one book I will definitely recommend to my friends, especially those going through losing someone they love. It’s never easy but it’s always worth it.

My Heart!!!

Wow, an amazing story. So well written. I laughed and I cried. The journey was a rollercoaster of emotions that I was swept away on….i just couldn’t put it down. There was humour and so mich personality….I loved calling and her journey felt organic and her timeline was her own. There’s no set rules to grief and the author managed the balance perfectly. Off to read the next book in the series!

another love.

This was so angsty. Cali lost her first love to cancer…. And she’s found her second in the most unlikeliest place. The doctor’s office where she’s trying to have her dead husband’s baby. Yeah, told you it was angsty.
I’ve read a few M.L Broome books now. She loves to bring the angst. Yes, I’ve used that word a few times in this review, but it really hits the nail on the coffin ( ooohh, appropriate? Probably not)

This story is very emotional! I cried, I laughed, I mourned!! This book has it all! I heard sayings that I haven’t heard for about 40 years, learned best ways to use some underutilized vocabulary and really felt like a participant in this story! This is the real deal (a deeply moving story)! A must read drama!!! You’ll miss out on a very talented author if you skip this one!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

This is such an incredibly moving book. It takes us on one woman’s journey through grief after losing her soul mate. We see as she makes mistakes after finding another wonderful man. My heart broke and cried for her a few times through the book. It’s a moving testament of how our hearts can break and heal. This was such a special and endearing book.

Both Sides Now is another wonderfully written story from ML Broome.

Every book that I've read from her so far is written with empathy and passion and Both Sides Now is no exception.

This is a tale of love and grief and the complexity of both.

So much care is woven into each character and a I enjoyed the journey.
