Set in rural Lincolnshire and Nottingham between 1870 and 1930, the novel chronicles the lives of three generations - William Skinner and his blind wife, their frustrated children and Enid, their granddaughter.
I loved this trilogy. The characters are likeable and engaging and the story is very well told. I have found some of Hattersley’s other writing a little hard going, but no so these three. The books survived 30 of my annual bookshelves cull and I have thoroughly enjoyed re reading them 30 years on.
