The Penny Thief is a wonderful depiction on what greed can do to a human being. Greed can absolutely destroy and that was shown extremely well throughout the book. The story flowed well and was full of fast-paced action and intrigue. The race to find the money will definitely make your skin crawl due to the wickedness of greed.

I felt that Henri was a great anti-hero; he’s definitely not perfect. He begins as a victim but as the story unfolds his character becomes very complex; so complex it is very hard to view him as a hero. At times, I found him a little bit disturbing but likeable as well. I really enjoyed the romantic side of Henri. His expressions of love were so creative. Mr. Paul wrote a very interesting character in Henri Pichon.

Jean-Phillippe Maillard is another interesting character who doesn’t fit into one definitely archetype. I rather liked him; even with his greedy shortcomings. His love for his daughter, Tash, redeemed him. I’m not sure if he deserved his ending. It was incredibly harsh.

Of course, there are true villains in The Penny Thief. Pierre Gabriel turns into a complete ogre due to his greed. In the end, he would do anything to get all the pennies; no matter who got hurt. He is a prime example of what can happen when greed totally overwhelms you.

Besides the greed and betrayal, there are so aspects of true kindness in this story. Marcel, Etienne, Yvette and Valerie gave the story a sense of compassion that balanced out the awfulness of greed. Their characters gave the story more texture and emotion where you won’t drown in the corruption of money.

The Penny Thief is full of intrigue and suspense. It is, also, very intelligent and will keep you engaged until the very end.

I like thriller but I hadn't read this kind of thriller; nobody is murdered or kidnapped at the beginning. I'm not familiar with financial issues so I was worried that I might not enjoy it before starting to read, but it was much more interesting than I expected. It was nicely varied and never bored me. I was into it so much that I hated one of the characters from the bottom of my heart while I was reading it. Unfortunatelly, the ending was not my taste. I don't mean it was a terrible ending as a novel. It was ok, but it was simply not my taste.
One thing that annoyed me about this book was that it has some annotations. It distrusted the rhythm of the sentences when I read it. But all in all, it was a very entertaining novel. I liked it.

(I received this book for an honest review.)

NOTE: I received a review copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

At a first glance, The Penny Thief didn't sound like the incredible book it turned out to be. I didn't think it would swipe me off my feet, but it most certainly did. This was a book of many colors - romantic, thrilling and psychological elements elevated it to the place it holds. It was almost impossible for me to put it down and seeing how much I liked it, I've marked it as a 'to re-read' book.

Writing style:
From beginning to end there wasn't a single flow I could point out. The style was clever and witty. It's obvious both the author and translator are well versed, making sure that they give us readers an intricate story to plunge into.

Story line:
Told from an omnipresent, omniscient third person POV, the story of Henry Pichon is quite fascinating. Fast paced and incredibly well written, it takes us on a journey into the minds of several people.
Although there is almost no mystery left for the reader to ponder, The Penny Thief is far from boring. It's structured so that the reader is more than an observer in the lives of the characters, who, of course, don't have a clue what is actually going on.

Themes:
- The main theme Cristophe Paul addresses is greed and how it can literally turn man into a monster.
- Facing challenges with a clear head is the smart thing to do.
- Love can last for a lifetime
- Everyone gets what they deserve. In the end.

Characters:
Henri Pichon is Paul's protagonist. He only appears for one scene in the beginning, then returns to the story around the second half mark. Henri is a meticulous man. He is a genius who likes to keep his stuff in order. He handles on his own the IT affairs of French bank #1 for decades with no glitch in the system.
Henri Pichon also loves a challenge. It's a game to him to write algorithms re-routing pennies to his own bank accounts all over the globe. What's most important though is that he doesn't do it for the money. Greed is not the driving force behind it. It's the satisfaction of cracking a challenge.
Henri lives modestly. He has no family. But he holds a passionate love in his heart for a woman by the name of Tash. I really enjoyed reading his scenes because the goodness of his heart was easy to see.

If there ever was an antagonist so bent on being selfish and sinister, Pierre Gabriel was it. Except for his undying greed, his bouquet of personality traits was quite humble. He was an average computer programmer. He was selfish. He cheated on his wife. And that's merely the beginning. To top it off, he didn't hesitate to take human life.

Natasha (Tash) was a woman who didn't find herself in the right situation in the past, but at present she holds a second chance at love. A chance to change her pathetically looking future. Tired of a bleak life with Pierre Gabriel and seeing the man she's loved her teen years, Tash is determined to find happiness for herself. She is kind hearted and incredibly uninterested in money.

Jeanne Philippe Mellard was a prominent figure. Apart from being Tash's father, he's also the IT director of the bank in question. He's so close to retiring and receiving a handsome pension, it makes you wonder why he would decide to get his hands dirty instead. Of course, the explanation lies with that horrible word 'greed' again. However, wanting more lands him in quite a different place than the one he coveted.

Morgane, another prominent character to analyze. Being Mellard's lover of a long time had a lot of benefits to reap. Unfortunately, greed seemed to whisper to her as well. Good for her, she had the wits to realize that no amount of money was worth her life or freedom. She was the only character who counted herself blessed for getting of the hook.

Lambert, the private detective was quite a disappointment. One would think he'd be able to ignore the call of the green paper notes, but sadly this was not the case.

In conclusion:
The Penny Thief is a thrilling read about the corrupting power of money. It puts the reality of greed and its consequences in the light, under complete exposure. It's definitely a book one should read.

Quiet, brilliant IT programmer Henri Pichon has skimmed a fortune from one of the biggest banks in Europe. For twenty years, day after day, penny by penny, using a complicated electronic process, he has amassed a fortune. Nevertheless, he is the hero of the story. So this tale is essentially how he did it and why he is the sympathetic character of the novel, in my opinion. The author, Christophe Paul, has an MA in IT computing so his complex explanations about Henri’s actions sound authentic. It’s a modern story.

The descriptions of Paris are charming and who doesn’t love that city? The reader gets the sense of what the “city of lights” is all about, from the author’s descriptions of the bistro tables to the corner bakeries to the aroma of coffee and croissants that fills the air. And how interesting are the footnotes regarding the many historical buildings throughout Paris, including Sainte Chapelle with its glorious stained glass! The reader is conducted through the winding streets of Montmartre where much of the action takes place. The author obviously writes about what he knows. It sounds like the real thing. Whoever has been to Paris will recognize much of what the author describes.

“The Penny Thief” is a translation from the original “Le voleur des centimes”, a much more romantic title in my view. That being said, this novel is a very good translation and certainly captures the essence of an action-packed romp.

Despite being full of f-bombs and other expletives, this is a light, quick-moving read, with a quirky ending. It has something for everyone who loves police thrillers and adventure. It is also a love story. It has something for everyone who enjoys that genre.

What a fantastic book! I couldn't put it down. Starts with a bang and the action doesn't stop.
The writing is spectacular, the story just flows. The characters are full and interesting. You will either love or hate them, my favorite...Henri and Tash.

It has been many years since I visited Paris, however, the descriptions were so well done that I could actually 'see' the places being described.

I loved this book. It has everything a reader could want. Adventure, intrigue, romance and fun.

Set in one of my favorite places in the world, Paris, this thriller is sure to please with its references and trivia about local landmarks that are not just your usual Eiffel Tower and Louvre.

Told from different character viewpoints, it was interesting to step into the shoes of each. None of the characters were really likable to me. However, they were portrayed well and moved the story along effectively.

Nice proportions of mild action and thriller content combined with mind games and romance.

I would love to see this made into a film.

After Henri is involved in an accident it is discovered that for years, he has been stealing money - a penny at a time! This is a tale about money, greed, the lengths people will go to get hold of it plus a bit of romance and kindness. It was quite intriguing and clever. Book provided by publisher and Netgalley.

The Penny Thief

After being in an accident that lands him in a coma, his deception comes to light. He’s been transferring money little by little, cent by cent, over the past twenty years into separate accounts. Now Pierre-Gabriel is on the hunt to find the accounts and claim the money for himself.

I really enjoyed this book, normally I’m not a mystery or thriller fan but this book kept me interested and wanting to keep reading it. I enjoyed the twists and turns.

Thanks to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing for the advanced readers edition in exchange for an honest review.

¡Y menuda sorpresa me he llevado! ¡Vaya estafa!

Saludos ;)
