Vengeful ghosts, Folk horror, strange creatures, and psycho killers leaped from the pages and pulled me into the tales. I was a willing victim, happily spellbound from start to finish.

Just a few of my favorites were Hungry Is The Bodach by Stuart Knott in which a woman has an ulterior motive for getting her lunkheaded husband up to the family cabin.

The Syn-Eater of Lancaster by MJ Mars is about a sin eater who has finally found a way to turn a good-sized profit for his work but at a terrible cost.

To Be A Man Of Man by J C Michael A new love is not all it's cracked up to be in this twisty surprising tale.

The God Botherers by Ashley Little follows two men on their way to do the Lord's work or at least their interpretation of it.

In Wrong Lane by Stephen Barnard a driver sets out to teach others the consequences of aggressive driving but ends up learning their own lesson.

Pergyl by C S Jones A family arrives at a cabin in the midst of a terrible storm, but there is more to fear than the weather.

Sand by David Watkins is a story worth remembering any time you're on the beach. Especially a lovely secluded beach that you seem to have all to yourself.

The Joke by Tom Carter left me stunned! I don't even know what to say about this one without giving anything away. I'm just going to say it was brilliant.

Brompton Road by Elizabeth Brown is where a content creator sets out to film one of those creepy abandoned place videos but it doesn't go as planned.

I could go on but at this point, I'd be listing the whole table of contents if I named every story that I enjoyed.

This is a huge collection of 27 stories that were much darker than expected and left me saying Bloody Hell that was a good book!

This was a great reading roadtrip through the UK & Ireland! Firstly, I loved the myths, monsters, murderers, and general mayhem you can find throughout this anthology.

Secondly, it was such a treat to read these special stories from authors either brand new to me, or ones I’ve read previously. They each added their own flair to their tales, sometimes even utilizing different dialects (loved the Scottish brogue) for their characters’ dialogue.

Each entry was well polished with gorgeous illustrations, so well done to Sarah on the editing and Rachael on the art work! The cover is gorgeous as well, making this book immediately catch readers’ eyes.

While they were all fabulous entries, a few really resonated with me:

I enjoyed the sin eater tale by MJ Mars, having read a book many years ago about this peculiar occupation. It was great to read another story about this macabre job with a supernatural twist.

Ashley Lister & JC Michael’s stories both totally surprised and shocked me. I think they both showcased the brutality of beliefs and the lengths people will go to for their religion.

This is such a well put together collection with each author capturing the essence of the countries and cultures of these great islands while staying true to the horror genre. Definitely one to buy asap!

Showcasing the absolute best of UK and Irish indie horror. Each tale is a blood soaked tentacle slicing through your entrails. Marvellous malevolent moments exploring the macabre side of our ancient land.

Beautifully illustrated by Rachael Rose and brilliantly edited by Sarah Jules this is an extravaganza you do not want to miss!

Here there be a Highlands horror, an Eldritch nightmare, a struggle against consciousness, a job well eaten, a tale of sacrifice, a religious calling, accidents happen, the hunter becomes the hunted, it rides in on the storm, they come from the mines, a camping trip to forget, a fantasy made flesh, a killer is reborn, revenge served hot, the mist brings stories, the sand gets everywhere, jokers beware, an urban exploration, he was a skater boy, a nighttime snack, a harvest payment, death draws close, an attempt at freedom, Halloween story time, last orders at the inn, a voice in the darkness and searching for gold was a mistake.

Peer inside the cover as we witness the chronicles of ghosts, demons, creatures, myths, legends and the worst monster of them all, humanity. This is a bloody hell of a good time!

What a fantastic collection to be a part of. Sarah Jules has recruited some great names in the indie horror writing scene, and I'm really proud to have contributed to this. My story, "Hungry is th' Bodach", is set in the Scottish highlands. It's about a couple devastated by loss, the mother driven to make her husband pay for his inadequacies, and a strange, goblin-like creature that binds them all together in a horrific destiny.

There's a lot to like here, and a lot of variety. I especially enjoyed Sarah's disclaimer at the start explaining British lingo and spelling. I'm familiar with a couple of the authors here: Jessica Huntley provides "The Sleep Demon", a piece dealing with guilt and sleep paralysis that's a nice little tie-in to her "Darkness" series. Bethany Russo delivered "Murder in the Video Stores", a spicy slasher set in a DVD shop that touched upon the blind obsession teens often mistake for love. Elizabeth Brown wrote "Brompton Road", a fun piece following two urban explorers and their ill-fated excursion into the ominous subterranean tunnels beneath London. Journey to Barnsley with Sarah Jules for a trip down an old mine, one rife with the mystery (and anger) of untold lost souls.

Other stories that I really enjoyed include "Sand" by David Watkins, a horrific creature feature with a dark twist, "The Moor-Folk and the Poet" by Philip Alexander Baker, where long-hunted wildlife takes their bloody revenge, "The God Botherers" by Ashley Lister, a delicious take on the door-to-door acolytes of the Lord, and Lee Allen told a tragic tale of the mythical "Cythraul". Vicious spiders, a serial killer returned from Hell, a vigilante werewolf, monstrous creatures from British folklore, "Bloody Hell" offers a glimpse of the imagination and horror on offer in the UK. Add to that some fantastic illustrations by Rachael Rose and you have a collection that's built to catch the eye, and your intrigue, and bring a smile to the face of any horror fan (particularly those in the UK!)

Okay, so wow! This anthology is a book of dreams for horror lovers. Love a British location? Love a creepy story? Look no further. This collection brings together thrillers, light spook, stories that feel like metaphors or have deeper meanings behind them, and then just pure horror. There are serial killers, creepy killer bugs, stories of revenge, pub massacres, folklore, Jack the Ripper comes back, grief, regret, sleep paralysis, granddad's stories, naughty text messages, terrifying mines... you name it, this collection has it.

When it comes to anthologies, especially those that include different authors, there can be lots of different writing styles. Lots of changes in format, a wide range of voices etc. So look, I'm not here to say some were good, and some were not, because thats not my review style. It feels unnecessary. Especially when having favourites can sometimes depend on personal tastes of different tropes. However what I can say is, every story is brilliant. Even those that didn't meet those 'favourite tropes' of mine were great reads. There was something to appreciate about each one. Stunning writing styles (looking at you Mr Allen! That welsh story was written like a classic!) Some were hard hitting, some were funny (looking at you Mr Rayner!), some were genuinely freaky (looking at you Ms Jules! I felt like I couldn't breathe reading that one!) And some had twists that had me looking like that famous painting (I'm still in shock Mr Ody!).

It was great reading locations that I know too! The Lake District story by one of my favourite authors Jessica Huntley! Especially loved as it's a short story in relation to her 'Darkness' series. The story set in my hometown: Bath! That was a fun discovery!

And to really highlight this being a fantastic read: those illustrations were to die for!! @therosemoth
I envy your talent. They were amazing!!

This collection allowed me to read new work by favourite authors, and discover new ones! I'll be checking out all their work because I need more of these tales!

BLOODY HELL: An Anthology of UK Indie Horror
Edited by Sarah Jules, with illustrations by Rachael Rose

Just released!

"BLOODY HELL" indeed! This is a real indie horror fiesta, spanning everything from folk horror, ghosts, demons, to creature features! Each story has its own setting, all across the UK (and a bonus story in Ireland), so that going through the anthology feels like you're taking a terrific horror tour all over the UK map. It includes some easily recognizable indie horror names, but also several that were new to me, all authors to be commented for their boldness, their original ideas, and the fantastic execution. Great style and superb editing, too! Not to mention the amazing illustrations by Rachael Rose!

Six stories (out of the wonderful 27!) were my absolute favorites.

The opening story, "Hungry Is The Bodach" by Dr Stuart Knott (Glen Affrick, Scotland), offers a brilliant supernatural tale of revenge, showing how a wife takes cunningly advantage of her family lore to get back at her useless husband.

"The God Botherers" by Ashley Lister (North of England) has two church recruiters, Brother Black and Brother Green, doing the rounds, trying to proselytize people door to door. You'd think that only two kinds of people are to be encountered: the welcoming ones, and the, uhmmm, less welcoming ones. Well, you'd be wrong! There are also... demons! Or are there? This story had me laughing out loud. It's horror comedy or satire.

"The Dark Heart" by Jim Ody (Wiltshire, England): OK, that one is disgusting and I can't recommend it in good faith, but if you're into those intimate mother-son relationships most people would've rather never heard about, you're in for a treat! Awful, it does stick to the mind though! Well done Mr. Ody.

"Wrong Lane" by Stephen Barnard (Bolton, England): this one takes those familiar, ugly driving habits and spins a satisfying ghost story out of them, a story with a moral. I loved this one!

"Down T'Pit" by Sarah Jules (Barnsley, England), the editor's own story, is the spookiest of the bunch: the perfect short horror story about someone getting lost in a mine. Delightfully creepy!

And finally, Leigh Kenny's "They Stalk The Rows" (the bonus Irish story closing the volume), set in Wicklow, Ireland: it's about those American tourists messing up everything, you know? Well, not this time. Enter the Leprechauns!

In sum, this anthology is horror entertainment at its best, and not to be missed! Brimming with talent and originality, it'll satisfy every horror fan's cravings for a good, scary, clever story!

Ok so here is another horror anthology Edited by Sarah Jules. What makes this anthology different is they are all from the UK. It’s pretty cool, there is a map in the front showing where every author is and what I really loved is there was a bonus story that takes place in Ireland. Ok so what did I think of this book (which drops on August 1st!!!), BLOODY HELL IT WAS AWESOME!!! Going into this I thought, “Oh this will be a quick read.” Well it’s longer than I thought but that’s ok. Just more stories right?! It contains 27 stories from some of the best stories I have read in quite some time. These authors are truly talented and should be acknowledged, which they are on the description on Amazon. These stories cover pretty much everything you can think of. I absolutely loved it. Creepy, down right scary, and some made me chuckle a bit. If that makes me messed up, well so be it. I’m telling you, you all need to check this out when it drops. When was that again, oh yeah August 1st. It’s right around the corner!!!!! It’s so much fun to read, and you will not be disappointed!!!! So glad I was asked to read it.

Bloody Hell: An Anthology of UK Indie Horror Authors is a phenomenal mix of veteran and debut authors from across the UK (plus your favourite adopted Irish author).
You might think with having such a huge mix of veteran and debut authors that the quality would really vary, but the consistency is really high: every story is really strong and showcases some of the best in UK indie horror.
My personal favourite story was Bone Zipper, that will live rent free in my head for a while, but there were so many amazing stories to choose from it is hard to pick a favourite!

With such a mix of sub-genres, writing styles and blurred heroes/villains there is a story for everyone….unless you like happy endings….

After 27 stories I’ve found that Bloody Hell reinforced my support for the really talented authors I have read before, and has shown me authors that I’ll be looking out for going forward!
As a side note, be prepared to fall in love with the illustrations, I found at least 4 that I would happily have tattooed on me

I received an ARC of this book and am leaving a review voluntarily.

I love all the cultural aspects here! I enjoy learning about different folk tales, beliefs, and cultures and this book absolutely delights.

Make a note though—this is horror and the stories within this book absolutely embrace the genre. No holds barred! There’s gore, there’s suspense, there’s danger…it’s all here. I had to make a note not to read it at night. Even without the environments described here (forests, bogs, etc) I wasn’t taking any chances.

I think my favorite aspect of this is the atmosphere. Each story so clearly paints a picture that sends shivers of dangers, uncertainty, and fear without even encountering the main horror element yet!

If you’re a horror fan, this is a must have.

An anthology of short horror stories entirely set in the UK and Ireland and from UK and Irish indie authors? I mean, how could I have said no to the opportunity to read an arc when offered by Sarah Jules who edited it (and a very talented indie horror author)?

I was completely blown away by the variety of subgenres and tone of the stories, from folklore, to slashers and demons (and more), and from totally scary to full on British humour.

I loved it! Living in the UK, I was finally able to picture all the scenery and landscapes and to read the book with the various accents in my head. There were also a couple of stories set near where I live, which is rare and awesome!
If you think the UK and Ireland is a tranquil place where people are just happy with a cup of tea and some scones, well you’re absolutely right (lol), but also, be careful of who you’re drinking that tea with as these islands have lots to offer, including lots of fantastic indie authors bursting with talent!

I also found the hand drawn illustrations from Rachael Rose very beautiful and such a perfect addition.
If you want to experience the darker side of the UK and Ireland then you'd love this horror anthology!

Thanks to Sarah Jules for a copy and this is my honest opinion.

Bloody Hell - An Anthology of UK Indie Horror ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It’s been an incredibly long time since I’ve read an anthology & I am so glad Bloody Hell was the one to end the dry spell.

Bloody Hell contains stories from a range of talented authors - some you may not have heard of yet but rest assured they’ll be on your radar after this - which cover a range of horror genres, ensuring that there’s truly something for everyone with a love for horror. No location was safe from these authors and their stories, where you’ll journey to an isolated cabin, a lighthouse, a boarding school, a mine, even the beach (especially effective as I live by the sand!) and many more spooky spots.

The stories that stood out most to me were: Darkness Blooms, The Syn-Eater of Lancaster, Cythraul, Sand, Plough Monday, The Mill of Shattered Bone, Down T’Pit and They Stalk The Rows. Also, a special shout out to The Moor-Folk and the Poet as I’ve never read anything else quite like that before. I truly believe everyone who reads Bloody Hell will gravitate towards different stories due to our differing tastes and I can’t wait to see which ones everyone loves.

Bloody Hell releases August 1st, as I’m sure you’re all very aware of & have hopefully pre-ordered it. If not, hopefully this review is a reminder to go and do it now or order it tomorrow (and the timing is nothing to do with me getting my dates mixed up…)!

Please note - I did have to skip The Joke by Tom Carter due to my OCD/compulsions so unfortunately I am unable to comment on that particular story.

Firstly the British talent on display here is fantastic. I have read a few bits by some of the authors but most were largely unknown to me. However, I have found some new authors to get into. For that reason aline you should pick this up as a gateway to some new up and coming indie authors.

Now for the book. It has a range of stories from ghost to folk with a few psychological and some downright weird. Each story is based on the individuals home town so it is also a tour of the UK. Quite a few places I have been to so was able to imagine the scenes set with ease. I would start to go into each one but I would be here forever! You have some gruesome stories like Bone Zipper and some that are actually quite sweet in the end like Skate Bored. Some of the stories do deal with mental health and addiction but is done so respectfully. And there is a whole lot in between some based on old folk tales and a fair few set in a Great British Pub.

Overall this is a great collection. I would highly recommend this collection of stories. Go out, buy it, support some great British indy authors.

I have to say, Bloody Hell: An Anthology of UK Indie Horror was like a train ride into the depths of chaos. Each story stood strong on its own,, but the way they were put together elevated them that much more. The variety of style's , events and characters of each story was great. I've always been fond of UK style horror as its just a little different and in some cases darker depending on the story. If you want a great collection of stories then this is a must read. Murder In The Video Store, Down T'Pit and Worst Halloween Ever, were some of the stories that really stood out for me. But every one of them was a blast to read. This group of authors did an amazing job and this collections is something everyone will truly enjoy.

This is a great book of 27 short creepy stories, all by different amazing authors! Each story is well written and it’s neat to read so many different writing styles from each author. There are illustrations before each story, which are very well done also!
It’s hard to say I had a favorite, but a few stand outs are-
Worst Halloween Ever! By M.L Rayner
The Sleep Demon, by Jessica Huntley
The Sun-Eater of Lancaster by MJ Mars
There is definitely something for everyone to enjoy in this book!

Thank you to Sarah Jules for an arc copy of this awesome book with really amazing stories! Grab yours on August 1st!

A superb collection of stories from the UK and Ireland.

Naturally, I enjoyed some stories more than others and, as everyone has different tastes, I’m sure it’ll be the same for most people. But, without a doubt, every story thoroughly deserves its place in this anthology, as each one was unique—both the stories and the writing styles. Each story was superbly crafted and executed to draw the reader’s imagination into that short, thrilling, scary and horrific world.
I can imagine commuters on their 20 minute subway journeys eagerly delving into the stories. Sadly, the UK economy will dive as a result, due to thousands of workers missing their stops as they read, ‘just one more.’

An easy, overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!

For me, several stories were outstanding 5 star stories in their own right and those stories were written by:
Dr Stuart Knott, MJ Mars, Ashley Lister, CS Jones, Philip Alexander Baker, Elizabeth Brown, William Long, Sarah Jules and Leigh Kenny.

Congrats to Sarah Jules and all the amazing authors, and not least to Rachel Rose for her beautiful, stunning illustrations, which elevates this book from amazing to outstanding!

As a British indie horror author - and indie horror fan - this collection of short stories from my peers was always going to be my cup of tea, and it didn’t disappoint!

This collection is like a tin of Quality Street; something for everyone, and plenty of shapes and sizes. These 27 tales have monsters, cults, folklore, and just plenty of humans doing bad things or finding themselves in dark situations…a very appropriate representation of Britain in 2024 really!

Being an anthology, and one featuring so many stories, not all of not them hit the spot for me. But I could just about recommend dipping in and reading any of them. My particularly standouts were:

- The Syn-Eater of Lancaster by MJ Mars: a nasty and original telling of an old tale - don’t read it while eating like I did!
- To Be a Man of Man by J C Michael: lovely bit of culty weirdness from the Isle of Man with a wonderful final line.
- The Dark Heart by Jim Ody: flipping nasty with a neat twist!
- Sand by David Watkins: terrific beach horror with a great ending.
- Bone Zipper by William Long: my favorite of the bunch. Creepy, weird, sinister, original and scary!
- Down T’Pit by Sarah Jules: another standout - disorientating, claustrophobic and neatly done.

These isles have plenty of dark tales to tell and this collection is a fantastic spotlight on our healthy indie horror scene. I hope there’s a sequel…and, if there is, I hope for two things. One, that I can submit a story of my own for consideration and, two, the sequel is called ‘Bloody Hell, not again!’

A deliciously dark journey of horror across the UK.

Each of the 27 tales brings something unique and engaging to this stunning anthology from a fabulous group of indie authors from the UK and Ireland. This deserves pride of place on any bookshelf.

My particular favourites (a tough choice, but here goes!):

The Harlequin by Elijah Frost genuinely made my heart pound.

The Dark Heart by Jim Ody was so dark and so unexpected.

Worst Halloween Ever! by ML Rayner was so deliciously satisfying. For reasons you will understand when you read it.

Releases on 1 August.

I received an ARC from the editor. This is my honest review.

I wasn’t ready to be dragged into a nightmare when I first started this collection but that first one got me and ripped my heart out.
Some of these stories hit that primal fear that you used to have as a child hiding under the duvet at night.
One creature I can and will never forget was whatever the hell that was in Bone Zipper but my favourite was Mark Green’s story. I love his stuff and this was as good as always. My favourite quote was “ Only pain and torment awaited within.” Can’t beat it.
Another of the stories that messed with my mind was Down T’Pit by Sarah Jules. I had recently just gone on an underground tour of some air raid shelters from World War Two and this story got under my skin. These places are freaky enough to just stand in let alone having other things like that happen.
Great all around collection. Spooky, gory and just odd stories.
Makes me proud to be British!

27 authors tackle unique and varied stories for us to dip in and out of or if your like me enhale one after the other.
There is something for everyone to enjoy or something to make everyone fear or feel uncomfortable and even a bit of humour.

Person fav of mine was MJ Marrs with The Syn Eater of Lancaster which involves a man worker as a Syn Eater for the dying to cleanse the soul before death. This story stayed with me and I would love to know more or read more about this. Was this a thing??

Shout out to Jim Ody for the surprise and shock element of the Dark Heart I was not expecting this at all. Don't want to ruin it by saying anything.

Also final mention for a bit of humour ML Raynor Worst Halloween Ever!!!
The grandad gave me a good laugh, fair play!

Twenty-seven short horror stories from some amazing UK Indie authors, all set in the UK. This was so much fun to read! With stories from all over the horror genre from creature features to folk horror to psycho killers to ghosts and demons, some truly creepy and some with some humor. Each story features gorgeous illustrations from Rachael Rose. I'm excited to check out some books by some of the authors I was introduced to in this anthology!
