This series is for fans of old fashioned adventure sci-fi. If you're looking for hard sci-fi, look elsewhere. But if you enjoy endless space battles and wall-to-wall fun, read on!
slow moving space drama with novel twists and invented science
Each of the 9 books is really one episode that takes one step through the serial. It is mostly pretty good but a bit long drawn out and repetitive. The Science is improbable, the characters generally well drawn but a little facile, and the key plot elements generally well signposted.
This series is spread over Nine books and this review will have a section for each book. The First book being " Hellfighter" and the above being part of the review for this section.
The author, has usual, uses his gift to take the readers on a virtual adventure through space where Discovery exists but accountability is lacking at the leadership level, dedication to duty, action, new friendships, new alien races and the urgency to help others is the trade mark of one person.
1- Hellrider.
Captain Eric Howe, call sign Hellrider, is a US Navy fighter pilot with a family who has been without his plane for sometime now because of necessary repairs and parts replacements. Today, however, he is filled with anticipation as his plane had been repaired and he will be able to fly it again. Little does he know that a riff is about to open above him and transport him and his plane to another star system where war has become the habit and not the oddity.
Many adventures await our heroes and this reader must stop here as not to reveal the plot.
2- Me, myself and I.
Hellrider is now a full member of the Leithian navy's fighter squadron assigned to the Phion, a battleship commanded by Alia with her husband Unus, being the Squadron coordinator.
After circumstances that places Eric in a position where he saves the lives of his crew mates including Alia, the battleship captain, he was offered a place in the squadron pending the approval of the Regent, Trillia, after he met with her and she gave her OK.
The author excels in concocting a fictional plot where a Human pilot will be integrated in an Alien Navy and the openness of mind he shows when meeting the Captain's family and living with them while on shore leave.
Getting more interesting as I read, I highly recommend the series and upgraded the rating to 5 Stars ++++. 3- Sleeping with the enemy.
In a totally selfless act, Eric decides to lead the Tameron fleet away from where the Pheon crash landed so that the Lethian can free his friends. The plan is audacious and the result catastrophic as Hellrider is captured by the Tamerons, locked in a cell and guarded by two guards.
Eric will be party to many events including combat as well as befriending another family.
Can't wait to read the next book.
4- Hidden Enemy
Hellrider is now a close friend of Phara, the Regent of Tamaroun as well as her family. He has battled with them, showed technical abilities of the highest caliber and a pathway to a promising career of the Tamaroun Navy has just opened to him.
However, he must decline Phara's offer as he feels duty bound to return to Leithia and make certain that Alia, Unus and their children survived the last battle. Phara understands and outfits him with a modified Tamaroun transport.
The only problem is that a third force is sneaking around playing with the integrity of dark magic that has plagued this party . To be continued.............. 5- Caught in the middle.
Eric has been through life threatening injuries and, due to the skills of the medical technologies in his new solar system either on Leithia or Tamaroun, has survived the injuries and made a total recovery although it seems to take more and more time to recuperate at each occurrence.
Promoted, demoted, arrested, then freed, then arrested again and charged with treason, Hellrider has arrived at the conclusion that a third party must be involved in reigniting the conflict every time a sliver of hope for peace manifest itself. Can he prove it though ?
The author delivers this fifth book with an ending that is so surprising that the reader cannot go to the following book to try to understand what is going on with one of the Regents.
6- Battle Lines
What happens when some beings or a foreign power are against peace?
With the neutral help of Eric, the two Regents finally meet to, first introduce themselves and then, set forward a sketch of a possible cease of hostilities between the two worlds.
With what has been discovered by each side, people of all races are less inclined to kill each other and would rather reach a true and permanent peace with each other.
However, each and every time they try, another impediment is thrown in the cogwheel and nothing is accomplished. Even now, riots are in full force across both Nations and prominent leaders are murdered along with anyone standing in the way of the insurgents.
7- Shadow Masters
Unus has been severely and critically injured just after taking his place, along with his wife Alea, as one of the new Commanders. Out of their minds with worry, his family, of which Eric is a part, can only pray and hope that the surgery will be successful and that Unus will make a full recovery.
Trillia has just appointed Hellrider as a new full minted Battleship captain. Other space meetings between the sister Regents are planned and carried out, always under threats of as well as Attacks from the insurgents. Eric and the two Regents must make all efforts to quell the current civil unrest raging in both worlds.
Hellrider has been captured and subsequently escaped from the the Leithian insurgent's camp with the name of it's leader. This pip squeak as Rowe calls him, has a name , Feron, and Eric has made it his mission to capture and kill him.
This series is captivating with each book bringing something new. This particular book is just filled with new material like identifying the puppet Masters, and other good stuff that I can't reveal without giving away the plot.
8- The End of the world.
Sworn to protect the Regents that he has taken into space, aboard his transport, for the purpose of finding a solution to deal with the third wheel in this dual solar system, Eric must battle the enigmatic stones that have decided, against all logic to destroy everything and everyone on the planets in both solar systems.
Forced to crash land with the Regents, he must protect them and make certain that nothing bad happens to them even at the price of his own life. They get back to Tamaroun space and main planet Celio with a battered and gravely wounded Hellrider.
However, with the help of his scientist friend Sao, Hellrider has an ace up his sleeve.
The authors really went all out, in this book, to create a climate of anticipation for the reading of the last book of the series.
9- Going Home.
No one can rely on well conceived plans as something can go wrong at the last minute. Hellrider is a living proof.
He went out to destroy the Third wheel in this part of the galaxy with a well thought of plan but got captured yet again by the ennemy that has yet to be identified.
Upon meeting with them, a decision will be made and Hellrider's life will change again at the very end of all the adventures that he will go through in this book.
This is a masterpiece of a series that I simply could not put down. I highly recommend it and rate it 5 stars because its the maximum allowed but it deserves more.
Life can be very unpredictable. Very much so. As Eric Rowe discovered when some weird cosmic anomaly pulled him away from the Sky on earth, depositing him and his newly repaired aircraft in space close to a binary star system...right pin the middle of a war. Another strange thing happened as his aircraft got taken into the yawning maw of some strange fighter spaceship...these fighters are aliens! Four different kinds of aliens! And things turn out even stranger the further Eric "Hellfire" Rowe got involved, Author Daniel Young in this box set succeeded in created a fascinating new universe in a setup unlike anything I read before where even the enemy is totally unknown and cataclysmic war exchanges is a daily thing. But behind all that, even a greater enemy lurks. The enemy of my enemy? I certainly read these nine books eagerly as if entranced. Enjoy.
Mr. Young has crafted another whiz-bang tale of pure imagination and derring-do that kept me riveted, turning pages into the wee hours for many nights to finish the whole set. This whimsical story has our hero, Alice…err Captain Eric "Hellrider" Rowe, in his Navy fighter jet suddenly falling into the rabbit hole…err cosmic anomaly, winding up in an unknown binary star system, right in the middle of an all-out space battle. He gets captured and tortured, but gets accepted as a pilot and eventually helps both sides against the unknown foe who is the real source of the conflict. I’m in my seventies. I read for escape and entertainment; Mr. Young provides both in large measure. I’ve read dozens of his books and have thoroughly enjoyed them all.
In this extraordinary sci-fi saga, the narrative transcends typical genre expectations, delivering an immersive experience that captivates from the first page. The meticulously crafted storyline weaves intricate emotional landscapes, allowing readers to deeply empathize with Rowe's profound struggles and visceral reactions to loss and betrayal. Pulse-pounding action sequences are masterfully balanced with nuanced character development, creating a rich, compelling universe that resonates long after the final chapter. The author's skillful storytelling transforms this series into an unforgettable journey, making it an essential read for discerning science fiction enthusiasts seeking depth, intensity, and raw emotional authenticity.
I really enjoyed this series. It was a hoot to read and definitely had farscape vibes to it. It is the story of what happens when Rowe a human travels to a different part of the galaxy and ends up int eh middle of a war and the part he plays. Lots of action, drama, intrigue, surprises, and great characters. Easy to get sucked into the story and wonder what craziness Rowe will end up in next as I read the series. Lots of aliens to meet and enjoy and mystery to unravel too. Loved it as it made me laugh and groan and shake my head. Easy to read and hard to put down.
Hellrider is his call sign. Flying on a shake down flight he is pulled into a vortex that shoots him into the middle of a space war. What he wants most is to go back home. These beings have things so far in advance of earth that he is amazed. Trying to get home is not an option so he makes the best of it and becomes a pilot. So interesting and imaginative are the beings he meets and becomes family with. Great story, good read.
I've really enjoyed reading Daniel His work over the last few years, but Earthman Adrift really is the best I've read. The story is a gripping tale of a naval aviator being transported across thousands of light years to a battle field in a solar system. Captured by aliens Captain Eric Rowe is thrust in conflict where most thing don't add up. The intensity of Daniel's writing, character development is amazing! Thank You Daniel!
Great series and what a happy ending! We don't get happy endings all the time now and this could not have come at a better time. It was nice to be able to read a series of books were relationships, good relationships, were prized by the characters. And it was nice to read about the values that were also important... loyalty, love, friendships and family. I'm kind of sad that I'm finished with the books...wish there were more...
This series was at least twice as long as it needed to be and I believe the author milked it for money. It had a good premise which is why it gets two stars but was agonizing in the details, drama and angst. I skipped whole chapters and didn't think I missed much. I would have been pissed if I didn't get it through Kindle unlimited.
I started with great expectations which lasted until the end of the first book. After that the whole thing devolved into an illogical farce. Hard to understand why I ploughed through the whole repetitive mess but I managed to get to the all too predictable conclusion. Be prepared to skim through much of the story, you won’t miss much. Good luck.
The only time that I give five stars is when the reading material is outstanding, this series is every thing you should want in a space opera. I've been reading S. F. And Space Opera, for going on at least 60 years now and this series fits right in. Thanks Daniel from another Daniel!
but problematic from an adult author. The premise was interesting but the complete abandonment of science in the realms of biology, physics, sociology, and others made it a chore to finish this series. I will be putting the author in my Don't Waste Time list.
This is one hell of a story and I have read only it for the last few days it has flatten the battery in my phone to many times to count. If you want an adventure story that has exciting things happening and a good world building.
Totally different and intriguing. Full of action and questions. From start to finish, Eric keeps wondering what could possibly happen next. There’s no stopping until you get to the end and find out if Eric can survive this. Well written.
Could (and should) have been a single book. Wasted my time. After skip reading from about 4 on, I finally gave up on book 8. Each was just a repeat of the previous. Go to battle, get hurt, recuperate and repeat forever.
I loved the old school sifi vibe. No explaining all the time about retro rockets firing to slo down etc. Lots of character building and “people “ interactions. I fully intend to check out the next option from Mr Young
Navy pilot Eric Rowe set out to test his plane after routine maintenance and finds himself in the middle of a battle in space and the beginning of an out of this world adventure.
Could have eliminated the middle books. It kept going back and forth. The space conflicts were all treated like distance didn't matter. Hard to keep up with what was going on
I enjoyed it too much as I lost a lot of sleep because I couldn't put it. Just told myself that 30 more minutes and then sleep but it was usually a couple of hours. I'm so glad I enjoyed it so much.
This was not your ordinary space battle type novel. Very different and unusual. I really enjoyed it. I read in bed and it was hard to put down every night to go to sleep.
Absolutely brilliant sci-fi fantasy fiction. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action. A thrilling read. I look forward to more from this author.
