I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book when I started reading it. It didn’t ‘click’ with me right away, like some books do. That bothered me because I liked the first Thaddeus Murfee book.
But it got better fast and I tore through it. There aren’t many twists in the plot – it’s a mostly straightforward A to B to C deal – but there are moles in both the good guys’ and bad guys’ camps to add to the tension. The body count is also pretty high for a legal thriller. And Thad’s love life is a soap opera episode.
My only beef is suddenly Thad is loaded with money (from successful lawsuits) and can spend it profligately and does. I always find that aspect of a character hard to buy into.
I’m looking forward to where Ellsworth takes Thad next.
Protagonist is the smartest man in the world. Oh no! The author wasn't clear how the main character enraged Bang Bang, the evil one. He took liberties with the procedures that were less than entertaining, and mislead the reader. It reads like a YA novel.
Again, Thaddeus is smart enough to stay alive and get extremely rich. His character is so likeable, but I was disappointed when he met up with Katy. This seemed so unfair to his hometown honey Ilene. How will Thaddeus handle fatherhood? He is a hot mess now and playing with fire!
John Ellsworth may have just become my new favorite author! (Sorry John G.) I just now finished BEYOND A REASONABLE DEATH right after having purchased and read THE DEFENDANT a few days ago. I am excited to see that there's another book by this author just waiting for me to "One Click Purchase" after I've written my review. (ATTORNEY AT LARGE, here I come!) The books are excellent reads that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good legal thriller (that doesn't get TOO bogged down with more legalese than my little pea-brain is interested in absorbing). Both of these books hooked me right from the very beginning all the way through to the very last pages. The story is fast-paced, with twists and turns that kept me wanting to read more. I don't write reviews very often and I often worry that I don't know how to write the review well enough to do the book and the author justice...BUT, when the book has given me exactly what I look for when I want to "curl up with a good book" and allows me to "escape" for a while, I want to try to say "thanks" to the writer and, hopefully, encourage another reader who enjoys this genre to pick up the book I've just finished and enjoyed tremendously. I hope that my "two cents" here has accomplished the effort. Happy Reading!
Beyond a Reasonable Death Thad Murfee Bk 3 by John Ellsworth When you cross with the Mob, why not just sue them?????
This legal thriller is the story of a very young lawyer in a small town who crosses the mob. They send a hit man after him. Trying to break free, he sues them, and a courtroom drama ensues. Very quickly he learns you don’t sue the mob and go back to normal living. He is pursued relentlessly and runs west to the mountains of Arizona, where he seeks refuge with a Navajo shepherd. He sets up his office in a cabin while he pursues his case against the godfather. The shepherd has many lessons for Thaddeus Murfee—lessons about surviving when all odds are against you. Together they face the first mob soldier sent after Thaddeus. Plus…the old shepherd has a granddaughter who attends medical school. Katy teaches him to fly-fish, and romance blossoms. Then, he has pursued again and must abandon her in this powerful crime fiction. Set in Chicago, Mexico, and Arizona, Thaddeus is hunted. He must battle wealthy lawyers who seek to protect the mobsters. Thaddeus takes his case to trial with astounding results. What did I like? Well, I fell in love with Thaddeus in the first book and he just keeps, getting better and better. Who would have ever thought to sue the MOB??? I mean it takes it outside the realm of what you could even think about. Hey, if it works then that is what you do but at what price? What will you like? If you’re like me and like to think out of the box, then this is the book series for you. Thaddeus does things in the way that takes everything a step further and for him, it works. There is plenty of legal action, but it doesn’t stop there, he is chased, shot at, ends up in the mountains on a Navajo reservation and it just keeps going and going. Fast action, fast thinking and don’t stop and smell the roses will it be enough, just read on.
Note: this is actually book three in the series even though it is listed as number 2... Had me confused for a while but after doing some serious checking I found a beginning book on Thaddeus that is not numbered.
I do believe I am done with John Ellsworth and Thaddeus Murfee. Let me start by saying the numbering of this series is absolutely driving me nuts. He seems to of added a book at some point so sometimes a book is labeled as Book 3 and other times the same book is Book 4?
I prefer to read books in order but I happened to run across “Chase the Bad Baby”. Which my copy is labeled “Thaddeus Murfee Book 4”-but if you look on Amazon it is Book 5 somehow. Anyways bought it and totally enjoyed Thaddeus and his secretary/partner in crime Christine. Proceeded to order The Defendents-Book #1 and Beyond a Reasonable Doubt-Book #2. Once again to make my point this is how my books are labeled but once again on Amazon they are #2 & #3. So confusing.
Among the first things that happen in “Beyond a Reasonable Doubt” The Godfather of the mob goes to kill Thaddeus. Thad is not in his office so his secretary Christine gets her head blown off-dead. I could not get over the fact that Christine is alive and well in “Chase the Bad Baby”.-two books later. That totally ruined the entire story for me. And also could not figure out the reasoning of making Thad such an unlikeable person in this book. Why-two women pregnant at the same time? What is the point of that?
Ok, enough said. I am done with Ellsworth and Thaddeus.

Constant action. Really good.... until the last few chapters. Not worth more of the series.
Thaddeus Murfee is a high powered talented attorney who just happens to have a hit put out on him by the mob. This is my first time reading any of the series so I'm not familiar with the background. Thaddeus is awash in money but has this problem with wanting to stay alive. Mr. Ellsworth keeps the tension going and has lots of twists and turns in the story.
*spoiler alert* Sadly Thaddeus, who has apparently had a long term relationship with Ilene and says he loves her; has no control over his lustful urges and hopes into bed with the next beautiful woman he comes across. Although Thaddeus has told her he's in a relationship, she thinks nothing of throwing herself at him. Poor Thad suddenly falls out of and into lust with the new woman. What happens? Well darn, now he has two women pregnant. Nothing like sowing your seeds everywhere then leaving a trail of fatherless children behind.
Although I liked Thad for most of the book, this made me decide I has no more time for such a worthless man. There are decent heroes to be read so this type of scum isn't worth the bother.
this book was compelling and fascinating, must read
This book deserves 5 stars. Author did an amazing job on this book. It was so entertaining, not a boring moment. I was rooting for Thaddeus in every aspect. (Note: my son is named Thaddeus, also.) Thad is so smart and intelligent with a generous heart. The storyline of him and Henry relationship is inspiring. And I was team Katy. I never cared for Ilene and I do feel like she pulled that trapped card on Thaddeus. I didn’t like how she didn’t give him a choice in the decision even though I believe in women rights. But I hate when a woman tries to trap a man by pregnancy. If they never discuss that issue before then she could’ve prevented that pregnancy. She went to him with that plan already in motion. Even though Katy was no different, I believe Thad truly liked her. Plus, she was more humble, more relatable. Maann, Thad about getting that money.
Beyond a Reasonable Death is a thrilling book. When my Kindle hit the 40% mark I had to think back to the beginning of the book. This book started out at a great pace and just kept going. When I hit 65% it felt like the thrilling suspense of two books packed into one. I have read Flagstaff Station, A Young Lawyer's Story, and now, Beyond a Reasonable Death. Each book was fabulous!
I really like the flawed, innocent Thaddeus Murphy. As lucky as he seems to be by the age of 27, he also has the worst luck with the Chicago Mob. But Thad used brains, and the legal system instead of brute force.
I enjoyed the first meeting of the Navajo Shepherd. He makes an appearance in Flagstaff Station and I really like his character.
The plot moves at a good pace, it's easy to connect with the characters, and legal moves and solutions are definite highlights. However, it's a stretch to believe (spoiler alert) that the protagonist could defeat a concerted effort by the mob--but, of course, it's fun to see the everyman underdog come out on top. I read one other book by this author but not sure if I will read more; the mistakes are very distracting. Examples of crimes committed against the English language include extensive misuse of hyphens, uppercase letters, and commas. I don't know what editorial process books published on Amazon go through, but I am interested in learning about it if anyone who reads this is willing to explain.
This legal thriller is the story of a very young lawyer in a small town where a mob rules. He learns quickly he can't sue the mob which is out to eradicate him. He moves to the west in the Arizona mountains and seeks refuge with a Navajo shepherd. He sets up his office in a cabin and continues to pursue the case of the mob leader. This is a very intriguing story of the young man learning to become a strong, confident man ... even as he's being hunted down by a mob hit man. This happens to be a true crime story, so get some coffee and dive into this awesome story.
Can Attorney Thad Murfee depose Godfather Bang Bang Moltinari and relieve him of his casino?
Will Atty. Thaddeus Murfee be able to depose Bang Bang Moltinari in Las Vegas, who is hiding in Mexico, while he, himself, is hiding in a desert mountain? Can Thad stay alive while juggling his two pregnant girlfriends and amassing a huge payout of Chicago Mob money? The judge presiding over this case has set strict parameters, can Thaddeus work within these parameters and collect a fortune beyond belief, thereby reducing Moltinari to a destitute future?
This is the 3rd Thaddeus Murfee book in the series and the 3rd I’ve read. These sequence books need to be read in correct order as each gives away much of the plot of the earlier ones. Thaddeus is an interesting character and Mr. Ellsworth does a good job of making him real. The plots are somewhat far fetched but entertaining and who knows, maybe possible if not very probable. I intend to read the entire collection. They are fun and suspenseful.
A JE. Legal Mystery Thriller (TMLTS - 2)/The Mob/Revenge/Escape/Let's Do It Again
JE. has. penned a legal thriller that turns into an outright manhunt. Our intrepid attorney sued the Job and they want revenge. Our young man hits the bricks attempting to find a place to hide. He tried a few obvious routes that end in terrible results. He is learning self defense the hard way and ends up in the mountains of Arizona with a shepherded waiting for time to return to court. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
I've been reading legal thrillers for almost 2 years now and i just started reading John Ellsworth by chance, starting with his first book, The Defendants. Fast forward, I'm hooked! Beyond a Reasonable Death was even better. I can't wait to begin his next read, Attorney at Large which I'm about to begin right this moment. I'm glad John has written several books because i honestly believe I'll be reading all of them. Keep up the great writing John and I'll keep up the diligent reading!
If I had read these in order, I might have gone no further. The story was good. However, something was lacking. It can't be that easy to obtain ownership of millions! Everything just falls in his lap. Even with his personal life. None of your attorneys can be faithful to anyone. Yet no hard feelings ever. And right out of the gate, 2 illegitimate children.
This is the 2and book in the Thaddeus Murfee series and it was a great story. The story picks up from where the Last book ended. Thad is on the run from the Chicago Mob. Thad has to use his tremendous legal powers to save his life and the people around him. The story takes you from Southern Illinois to Chicago to Vegas to Sacred Indian land in Arizona and even Mexico. The story was so good I couldn't put the book down and the ending was awesome and left me anxious to read the next chapter.

These books keep getting better and better. I read the first in this series and found the dialogue and character development stilted and unrealistic; however, the story kept my interest. I am critical of spelling and typo errors, so the next book irked me for that reason. This most recent book pleased me immensely. The author has honed his craft and the editing has become more efficient. I am anxious to begin the next story.
Not only is this a solid legal thriller, the writing is very good. I appreciate descriptions of things like scenery, towns, people. I didn't know how much more I could take at times, the tension was so high. Thaddeus has a knack for attracting trouble, certainly, but he's adept at getting out of in just in time. I'm anxious to dive into the next book in the series. Well done!
To me the first book’s plot didn’t hold up very well logically, and I didn’t like the Perry Mason ending of an unnecessary (except to the plot) confession on the stand. This one held together better and the characters, at least on the good guy side, were a lot more interesting. It is a fun read, although the hero’s virility is still a bit on the unbelievable side!
thaddeus is a lawyer who is definitely on the rise. He also is a lawyer who is marked by the mob! You definitely need to read this to see how he retaliates. Not in a manner that you would expect! along the way, he finds himself in a extremely difficult life situation. He has some difficult decisions to make, his decisions will affect the lives of others. Definitely, extremely interesting and suspenseful!
Ok, this is the third of Ellsworth’s Murfee saga that I have read. The first was so badly written that it was hard to finish! The second one was much better and this one makes me want to read more of Ellsworth writing. The court scenes appear unrealistic and naive but the story is fun, !
Enjoyed the book. It is very interesting how lawyers act very often (almost every time) in their own self interests. Reader feels a rapport with the character as he escapes from the bad guys. How the main character tries to reconcile two love interest, makes for interesting reading. Only negative is that the main character seems overly greedy. Recommend
I have read the other books in the series and this one didn't disappoint. What I have noticed is how much Thaddeus has learnt, not only in the courtroom but how to kill his would be assain. He is left with a moral dilemma at the end of the book so I have downloaded the next one to see the outcome but reading in between the lines, I have a fair idea as to his choice.
Another engaging story that’s got me into it already. Time for a criticism, Ellsworth really, Police returning a stolen vehicle to a perp?.?.? I don’t think they would do that, but who knows, I didn’t think the court would allow a deposition conducted in a foreign country, but I looked it up and sure enough. Anyway great read all the way, I highly recommend. 5
This was a slow go for me. A lot that was not believable and characters that have no depth. I don’t think a bodyguard company would be around if they just pulled up shop and left their client empty. The best character was Henry. Why it got 3 stars and not 2: cheap, quick, and there was some good suspense.
No spoilers: After the first book I was looking forward to a new series. This book has sadly put me off. There are enough good bits to keep me going to the end but for me the story is just far too implausible. I do need to be able to relate, even just a little, to a character.. and I need events to be believable. This book failed for me.
