City of Love: A Fantasy Romance Novel

Rate this book
She doesn’t belong in her own world. She can’t survive in his.

Lexi Cross just got fired. Again. Neither her Ivy League education nor her copy of Clairvoyance for Dummies has helped with her so-called gift of sight and the blackouts they cause. But while drowning her sorrows during a night out in Philly, she walks through the door of a secret club and steps into an entirely different universe—one with all the answers she’s been seeking… and the stunning, mysterious man who’s been haunting her visions.

Gideon Ashe also lives in Philadelphia—one without cars, computers, or electricity. A world of gas lamps and horse carriages, where technology is run on psychic powers. It was Gideon’s discovery that opened the gateway between dimensions, but the portal is fast becoming a Pandora’s box he can’t close. With his deepening feelings for Lexi, he’s no longer sure he wants to.

But Lexi’s presence in Gideon’s universe sets off a string of sinister events that could destroy his civilization. Between cross-world kidnappings, and risk of death from being in the wrong dimensions, they’re going to have to fight for their love.

As if the worlds depend on it.

CITY OF LOVE is a fantasy romance. It's the first book in the series, and though each book is set in the same parallel worlds, each is a standalone novel with its own HEA. That said, they are best read in order for a richer experience into the unique fantasy world.

City of Love is an intriguing world of parallel universes, magic, and danger. I thought it had an easy flow to it and was digestible, even when some of the world building was complicated. The main characters were endearing. I had a few sticking points, but I’m glad that I tried this new to me author. As a caveat to this review - I read this right before I got sick for days (and I’m still on the mend) so while most of it is very clear, nuances are a little fuzzy. Please also don’t be discouraged by a 3 star rating if you were interested.

The story starts with an introduction to Lexi (h) as she’s struggling to function at work. Poor Lexi lives in our world, but is overwhelmed with abilities to see the future she doesn’t completely understand. She can’t maintain consistency in her daily living due to the number of visions that she gets and how they affect her physically, mentally, and emotionally. Sometimes it’s fun to think about how life would be if we could see into the future, but Lexi’s experience is pretty bleak and frustrating, even with loved ones. She does see an unknown man in her recent visions who seems as if he’s going to mean something important to her.

We then meet Gideon (H), who exists in a world that is parallel to ours. Similar in history, but with the two worlds having diverged when it comes to whether the Industrial Revolution happened or not. Gideon’s world has a lack of modernity, but they also have an abundance of magic. His magic and brilliance in particular helped establish portals that connect our two worlds, allowing for some discourse, though the parallel world remains mostly hidden, esp from governments. Even with oversight though, tension is bubbling over the connection between the two worlds.

Written in third person, multi-POV (including some villain POVs). No ow/om drama and both are experienced (not much info is given on their past histories that I can recall, though they did have at least one conversation about the H’s past).

The existence of magic in Gideon’s world is what leads to Lexi’s introduction to the secret of the parallel worlds, hoping that others may be able to assist her in controlling her visions. When Lexi and Gideon meet, a powerful connection sparks, just as a serious danger to both worlds presents itself. Lexi and Gideon made for dynamic main characters, which was necessary given that the situations they faced aren’t limited to affecting only them and their potential romance. They’re falling in love, but they’re also dodging and weaving from unknowns and attacks.

These two do find something special in each other, which was lovely given the weight each of them carried on their shoulders. Their chemistry was excellent and the steamy scenes were good. The way that their individual backgrounds and motivations shaped how they approached their potential romance made sense. Their relationship development does depend too greatly on that magical connection though and it made for less organic moments imo because they could literally sense what the other one was feeling (I do love this particular feature during steamy times, gotta give props for that).

Some more natural moments are present still (and sweet), but I couldn’t help wondering if their magical connection didn’t exist, how things would have progressed differently. Which also wasn’t helped by pressure from a forced timeline thanks to the source of angst in their budding romance. The two of them literally exist in different worlds and it’s more complicated than just walking through a door in this particular world building.

Another part of the story that I struggled with was the presentation of the villains. There was a sense of substantial power and danger surrounding an entity that rears up, which then felt more like all bark and little bite with how events played out. I’m not one to want my main characters to be tortured or go through the wringer, don’t get me wrong. I just didn’t feel the presence of the bad guys as much as I think I was meant to. They’re manipulating and trying to harm Gideon’s world and Lexi, but the confrontations involving bad guys didn’t have the oomph I expected. I also figured out a specific villain very early and I wish that had remained a mystery. Villains aside, the other side characters delivered and I definitely was curious about one specifically for a possible future romance.

I don’t want to give anything away for the final act of the book so I’ll say that the major plot points come to a head and hard decisions are made, with some sacrifices happening. I’m not a huge fan of sacrificial actions personally, but I understand why the author made the choices that they did. One of the characters has to then make a choice and once that was made, there’s a bit more hoop jumping but then their HEA. The epilogue is only a short jump ahead and a cute moment, however we get insight into the future that Lexi sees that’s a beautiful HEA for them. I still had some questions and there are threads dangling because this world could be continued. I would read more by this author and I like that this story stood out from many of the other new releases recently.

✨ ARC Review ✨

Rating: 3
Spice: 2
Dark: 1

Tropes: magic, star crossed lovers, gas lamp setting, found family, parallel universe, secret identities, and instant love

TW/CW: no, maybe? There wasn’t a list; however, there’s a little bit of violence and scenes that might make some uncomfortable

Review: This book had a unique and interesting plot. While I liked this book, I found myself confused. I was hoping while the story continued, we would get some answers but we did not. If anything, it became even more confusing.
I loved the magic and the side characters. Found family is my favorite trope. Overall, if you like 3rd person, multi POV spicy insta-love romantasy, you will love this book.

Thankful that l was sent this delightful book as an ARC!

Our story begins with Lexi, a paralegal, who just got fired from her job after incessant and annoying pen clicking triggered her visions. So relatable! Well, not the visions part but you catch my drift.

We quickly learn that Lexi’s visions always come to fruition, and lately, she’s been dreaming of a blonde with gray-green eyes 👀.

Her friend, Margot, plans a pick-me-up night out for Lexi but little did she know that this club would lead to more than just drinks and dancing.

As predicted, Lexi finally meets Gideon, in HIS world, one parallel to our own but forewent the Industrial Revolution. Instead, citizens have developed special physical and mental capabilities like weather manipulation, telekinesis, clairvoyance etc, in addition to maintaining a less polluted and more eco friendly environment (where do l sign up???).

As Lexi and Gideon’s connection deepens, her visions reveal that others are plotting to harm citizens of Gideon’s world and she is caught in the crossfire. In the end, Lexi has to choose between worlds.

I absolutely adored the book and hope we see more of Lexi and Gideon in the future! L.M’s prose is light and breezy to read. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a unique portal romantasy book, enjoy flirty banter (reminds me of Rhys & Feyre and Hudson & Grace) and some spice!

I really enjoyed this book!

Lexi and Gideon are adorable starcrossed lovers that both deserve the absolute world. Each with their own demons and weaknesses that quickly become strengths once they find each other. I love the whole touch her and die vibes from Gideon, like yes protect your girl!! Not to forget Lexi has a snarky baddass side herself, which considering where she starts in the book is a huge character development for her. They honestly are the perfect "Hero" and "Heroine" for one another!

I really really enjoyed the storyline - two parallel worlds with so many similarities but also differences, portraying the what ifs if things had been different. I was also really not expecting the book to unravel how it did and I was absolutely hooked! A perfect mix of romance, spice and drama.

We follow Lexi's journey to Gideon's world, meeting him and the drama that unfollow. A secret organisation is about to threaten everything they love and it's down to them to stop it. But will they?

This is a beautiful love story that took place between 2 parallel universe. Lexi (our FMC) lives in a universe exactly like ours. It has technology, electricity, cars & everything that we have developed in the decades of societal progression. Lexi is a mature FMC who has clairvoyance (gift of sight). I loved seeing her character growth & how she slowly took control of her powers. She struggles to fit in to her world before controlling her powers due to the random visions she would receive of her future & the blackouts they caused.

Gideon our MMC lives in the parallel universe to Lexi’s. In his world there are no cars, electricity or much technological developments. What his world does have is other people like Lexi. They have different gifts like controlling the weather, soothing peoples emotions, healing, clairvoyance & much more.

On one fated night Lexi crossed over to his world through a portal. There she discovered how Gideon’s world felt like home to her. She was surrounded by people just like her. For once in her life she was not looked at as the “weird” one. Plus the stunning mysterious man who haunted her visions was there, right in front of her.. within arms reach ❤️‍🔥
She doesn’t belong in her world & she can’t survive in his.. how will both of them traverse through all the different situations that pull them apart to feed into the love blooming between them.

✨✨✨✨✨

The world & character development was simply amazing. I loved both the main characters & all the side characters alike. The parallel universes were described with such detail that I felt like I was there, watching through my own eyes.
There wasn’t a lot of spice but the scenes that did pop up in the story were 🔥. The Author did such an amazing job with the chemistry between Lexi & Gideon.

Overall I absolutely LOVED it 😍!!!
It was a bit different from what I normally read but I honestly think that contributed to why I liked it so much ❤️

She doesn't belong in her own world. She can't survive in his.

This was honestly night and day from Straus Debut, but it was equally impressive.  CITY OF LOVE is such a beautiful parallel universe romance with just enough spice.

Lexi is a young philly woman who happens to be Clairvoyant. This gift has been anything but, and has cost her another job. In an attempt at drowning her sorrows, she enters the doors of a club and finds herself in a whole different universe. Gideon also lives in Philly. A different Philly from Lexi.  His Philly lacks most modern commodities, and technology is powered by the mind. The people here possess powers much like Lexis own, is she finally where she belongs?

Lexi and Gideon fall for each other fairly quickly, but her presence causes problems. But Lexi is no Damsel in distress, and Gideon is down to fight for his lady.  Lexi has finally found a place where she feels like she belongs and with the man who has haunted her visions for years,  and they aren't going to give up on their love without a fight!

I loved this couple, and I really hope we see more from them as the series continues. CITY OF LOVE has fantastic characters and spectacular world building. This, for me, was romatasy perfection 👌. I am eager to see where Straus takes this series and will definitely be reading them!

I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review

I was lucky enough to be sent this as an ARC and I was hooked from word go!

It’s completely different to anything I’ve read before and thought it was such an interesting read!

There were times where I wanted more information about parts of the story but I don’t know if that was me just being greedy!

I really hope there is a book 2 because I need to know more , especially with the little glimpse of the future we got at the end!

Thank you for letting me read this before it being released, I think it’s amazing that you started this book at the age of 12!!! It shows that we should follow our dreams!

This was such a beautiful love story!

After reading (and loving!) Strauss's debut novel #Inferno, I'd been eagerly awaiting her foray into the fantasy romance genre, and it did not disappoint! An enchanting and intriguing new world awaits you between the pages of City of Love, beautifully described by Strauss's rich, vivid prose. I seriously want to visit there now; I am so upset this world is fictional! I loved learning about the abilities the citizens in this alternate Philadelphia have and why their world developed the way that it did. I see now that this is the first book in a series, and I cannot wait to revisit such a magical place! Where is my portal?!

But even more gorgeous than the world is the romance itself; I fell in love with both of the main characters within a few pages, and it was easy to see why they fit together so perfectly.

Lexi has always felt like an alien in her home world because of her abilities but finds acceptance in Gideon's world and gradually learns to accept herself, grow into her abilities, and take control of them. I loved watching her character growth throughout the story!

Gideon is such a sweetheart, but he's been alone for a long time, and Lexi fills a space in his heart I'm not sure he knew needed filling. He is also so protective of her yet eager to help her find her own power, and I loved that.

And can we talk about the spicy scenes in this book? (Because they are there!) Honestly, those were some of the most beautiful sexy scenes I've ever read; they were magic in and of themselves! And they flowed so naturally from the growing chemistry and relationship between the characters.

The side characters are also really intriguing, with motivations that make sense, and there are plenty of high stakes, high octane moments and plot twists in this book that provide a perfect balance to the warmer and lighter moments of romance and magic. I can definitely see this book kicking off a series within this universe. The main story wraps up well at the end, but there are still looming questions about the ultimate fate of both worlds that I would love to see answered in a future book.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC for this book, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I want to start off by saying that I love LM Strauss. I don't typically look too much into the artist, but she is something special. Perhaps I hold her in such high regard because we published our first novels around the same time and have shared many grievances (as well as laughs, of course) with each other. Many other authors won't give you the time of day (especially the ones who are already popular), but LM Strauss is one of those genuine souls that I will defend forever.

In addition to her character and kindness, I must say that she is a phenomenal writer. Many self-published authors publish too quickly and without the right kind of feedback or experience. It often shows in clunky writing, inconsistent prose, or poor planning, something no editor can fix. But LM Strauss demonstrates a mastery of words that proves she was either born with a great talent or has just put in a lot of work. Or both.

I haven't read #Inferno because it's not my kind of read, but I jumped at the chance to pick up this fantasy romance. The premise sounded interesting, although I am not a fan of contemporary novels. Regardless, it was LM Strauss, and I had to give it a shot.

Here are my takeaways:

1.) The prose is phenomenal.
2.) The story feels complete, the plot is excellent, and I love the villain.
3.) I wish the villain had had more page time and a grander purpose in the book. Same with the Prometheus Group and their goals. I felt there was potential for so much more.
4.) Other reviewers noted the same thing, and I wanted the relationship to build a bit more. I felt that Lexi and Gideon fell in love too quickly.
5.) Not sure how I felt about the HEA. It would have been sad, but, I was sort of hoping the transition wouldn't have worked and they would have found another way to keep Lexi in Gideon's world.

Regardless of my critiques, I enjoyed it, it entertained me, I liked the characters, the characters didn't annoy me, and I'd read the next fantasy romance that LM Strauss writes. I'm waiting for sprayed edges to pre-order.

CW: some spice

Thank you to the author for allowing me to be a part of the ARC team! “City of Love” releases August 7, 2024!

It’s a steampunk-ish portal fantasy/sci-fi hybrid set in an alternate timeline with an adorable love story; what more could you need to hear?

Alexis Cross can’t keep a job. It’s not her fault, really; the visions of her future that interrupt her life absolutely refuse to be held back. Resigned to the fact that she’s basically a hopeless freak, Lexi’s entire life is upended when a friend shows her a portal. A portal to a world full of people like Lexi. As attraction blossoms between Lexi and the developer of the portals, Gideon, Lexi will have to choose between the life she knew and the life that could be.

I really don’t know what to tell you that wasn’t covered by my little snippet above, but you need to read this book. It’s so sweet and so entertaining, and it has just the right amount of pressure in the background. Lexi’s abilities are really interesting to read about, especially since I feel like we don’t see as much with visions and precognitive abilities in these genres sometimes.

The entire world that Lexi gets to explore is beautiful, and I’d love to see even more of it. It has just the right blend of fantasy charm with modern sensibilities, and all of it is layered with fantastical skills and beautiful depictions of what our world might look like if we’d never had an Industrial Revolution. It sounds amazing, and I kind of want to live there.

The plot and the characters combine to make a really engaging story. It only took me a day to read, but it held my attention the entire time without fail. I think it also does a good job of balancing that ‘fairytale exploration’ vibe with the ‘oh my god, that would be a huge life event and is absolutely not a small thing to wrap one’s brain around’ realism in a way that isn’t always explored.

All in all, this was a really fun read; it didn’t require a lot of involved brain power, but it also didn’t sacrifice the quality of the story. The characters are fun, the setting is magical, and the romance is really sweet. If any of that sounds like your idea of a good time, you should check out this book!

"The City of Love" by LM Strauss is an extraordinary blend of Joss Whedon's 'The Nevers' (a TV show canned WAY to soon RIP!) with an undercurrent of 'Twilight' (yes! I said Twilight) From the moment I opened this book, I was genuinely transported to a second world Philadelphia and did not want to leave! The experience was so immersive that I found myself wishing for a giant trilogy series with the promise of a movie adaptation. *Cough* Joss Whedon get in touch with LM Strauss – lets make this happen!
The writing is spicy, unique, and beautifully crafted. LM Strauss has a talent for creating depth and angst between characters that is incredibly relatable, especially in the sense of compromise and give-and-take in any relationship.
Three things I adored about this book:
1. Lexi's journey - where she fails in her world only to discover she was destined for another (am I unco and uncoordinated because I too am destined for a better new world!!)
2. The parallel worlds and their intricate complexities are fascinating, raising compelling questions about whether technological advancement has helped or hindered us. I genuinely was dining with friends the other night and bought up this exact topic (after reading about it in this book) and it resulted in such an interesting conversation.
3. The magic was…the perfect balance. TELEPATHIC SPICE *chefs kiss*
Overall, "The City of Love" is my favourite romantasy read this year. I could not get enough and cannot recommend it highly enough!
Tropes:

Parallel universe
Touch her and diee
Portal travel

This was a really interesting fantasy read and was so glad to receive this as an ARC!

This story takes place in modern-day Philadelphia where Lexi is struggling to keep a job, and has visions she doesn’t understand with people that she doesn’t even know.

Through a unique process involving musical vibrations, Lexi and her best friend are transported through a portal at a local club to a parallel world where geographically the worlds are the same, but they differ technologically (think more Victorian era vibes in the second world). Lexi finally meets the people that she has been seeing in her visions (including Gideon our MMC) and finds that she is at home in this parallel universe.

Gideon and Lexi almost immediately fall in love, but because of the constraints of the parallel universes, Lexi can only stay for hours at a time in Gideon’s universe and Lexi’s world does not provide a comfortable living environment for Gideon with the amplified noises which weaken his powers. There are also factors at play that may prevent them from travelling back and forth through the portals so they need to decide quickly if their love outweighs the risks.

I was captivated right away by the world-building and how the two worlds compared to each other. I liked both main characters, although their relationship did escalate very quickly. And I was thoroughly surprised by one of the plot twists, I audibly gasped! Loved the writing style, it was easy to read and flowed well. I am looking forward to book #2!

Wow this book really made me travel between universes in the best way possible! I absolutely loved the world(s) and the character development so much, it was very easy to get drawn into the story!

The visions Lexi gets are so confusing, but they quickly start making sense and get more and more interesting. Especially when the telepathy starts! Can I just say the library scene 👀🫶🏼

Overall this is such a light and fun read! I enjoyed the banter and the connections, it’s a lovely romantasy read, with a little spice in it too.

Thank you so much L. M. Strauss for allowing me to be a part of your ARC team for this book. I feel so grateful and have enjoyed every second of reading it!!

Some favourite quotes and scenes:
💫 Craptastic mood - will have to start using this phrase

💫 Easy, peasy, cool and breezy - another fun phrase that made me smile haha

💫 He lifted his right index and middle fingers ever so slightly off the table, moving them in a subtle circular motion. Lexi jumped in her seat. She felt him touching her. - the library scene 👀

💫 “You do all those things anyway. You sort through those feelings one at a time, in your own time. You rant and rave and write her letters. She’ll hear you. Or not. But you’ll deal with it all as if she were right here. And in time, you’ll find your healing balance.” - Gideon explaining how to try to deal with losing someone. This had me in tears, so meaningful and loving

City of Love by L.M. Strauss: 🌟🌟🌟.5

My friend @davinareads said this perfectly the other day: "I'm a strong believer that all books are someone's book and just because I didn't like it, doesn't make it a bad book." (sugaring off review)

This book is someone else's ideal urban portal fantasy dream book. There were several story elements I liked: the versions of Philadelphia, the crystals to strengthen the magic, the lack of consumption based technologies, the dynamic between the main characters.

What I didn't love was how disjointed certain parts of the story felt. Maybe because this was an ARC copy, there was a point where it felt like a chapter was missing. There was some necessary exposition that was slashed and immediately tanked the narrative for me. As a reader, I like to hear and see all of the relationship development; I know there are elements of telepathy in this story, but when what is missing is literally the foundations of the main romantic plot line, you've officially lost me. It bothered me enough that I had a hard time enjoying the rest of the story. There are strong narrative bones to this book that feel like they would have benefited from a little more fleshing out.

I was sent an ARC copy of the book by the author to review and leave my honest opinion.

Plagued by visions that have been ruining her life for sometime and making her feel like she’s crazy , FMC Lexi loses yet another job. Feeling pretty low, her friend offers to take her for a night out she’ll never forget.

Thrown into a parallel universe so alike yet strangely different, her visions begin to make sense and a whole new world is opened up to her- enter Gideon ( he gave off such good “touch her and die vibes “). The attraction is instant and his world holds the answers she’s been seeking.

I loved the relationship between the two main characters and the as with all good things- there’s always someone looking to ruin or make money off it. I loved the concept of the two worlds being so alike yet having taken such vastly different routes throughout history and the resulting worldly changes, the harnessing of “natural” energy and frequency’s making it seem almost magical.

When things take a turn for the worse, Gideon and Lexi must find the person responsible before they ruin a good thing for everyone.
The twist towards the end had me shook- didn’t see that one coming at all!

City of Love has beautiful love story with some sci fi elements and just a little sprinkle of spice throughout

City of Love was a fun read that just didn't quite hit the way I was hoping it would.

The premise of the story was so intriguing to me and the characters were interesting and compelling. I think the issue for me was the pacing.

The connection between the main characters was immediate and their willingness to share their feelings happened almost immediately as well. Now the thing is, it does make sense why the connection is so strong, so quickly, it's clearly shown in the book why it happens, but I'm a gal that loves a slowwww burn. I don't even mind some insta love on one, or both sides, of a pairing but I can't have them divulging their feelings so quickly, I NEEED that tension, I thriveee on that angst.

The fantasy aspect was fun! I wish we could have learned a little more about the powers that people had and seen more of it in action, besides what we saw from our FMC learning about her powers and learning to control them.

I also felt like the pace that the big issue was resolved in was just a bit too quick and easy for my liking. (Noticing a trend here.... I like a little angst and suffering haha).

The spice was spicing for me, and there is a little bit of a slow burn waiting for things to get realllly spicy, but there is also lots of moderate spice sprinkled in early on!

So if you enjoy romantasy, and don't require the tension and angst associated with a slow burn romance and a more drawn out conclusion, you will probably enjoy this book!

This was a beautiful romance fantasy book with a hint of spice. This was a VERY fast-paced book for me. I honestly loved this book because it was so interesting!! The main characters, Lexi and Gideon, live in a parallel universe and find themselves falling for each other. I enjoyed reading about the portals, the magic, and the music. It truly was amazing to read how these two face their struggles and obstacles in life to keep each other. They definitely were soul mates. HOWEVER, I didn't see the plot twist. 🫣🫢 That was a HUGE shocker for me. Overall, I would read this again!!

A beautifully unique love story.

🌶🌶

I really enjoyed this book, it's well written, the descriptions are beautiful, the magic is interesting and the characters are loveable.

Lexi and Gideon fell in love a little too quickly but I do like the characters and I wish there was more information about the Prometheus Group and the villain in the story.

The ending is not what I was expecting, it is a beautiful HEA but I was expecting a little more trouble to get there.

Overall, I enjoyed this, I look forward to the next book in the series and I hope we still get to see Lexi and Gideon in the future.

● This book is written in 3rd person with multiple POVs.

● Quotes:

“Then you’ll stay in your world and live an amazing life. There’s been too much death already, Lex. Enough is enough. There’ll never be anyone else for me, but I’ll have my work here and my friends. And I’ll be loving you from my universe. Always.”

“What I know, Gideon, is that living a life without you is not the life I want. Do you still want me, Hero? If so, take this risk with me. Please say yes.”

Lexi Cross lives in a world like ours, with technology and electricity but she has the gift of sight (clairvoyance) which has caused her to lose another job. Her friend, Margot offers to take her out to cheer her up by taking her to a parallel universe where the Industrial Revolution never happened, and people have different gifts like Lexi’s. While there, Lexi feels at home and isn’t considered “weird”. She also meets Gideon, a man she’s seen in her visions but as their connection deepens, her visions show her a group of people trying to harm those in Gideon’s world and she’s caught in the middle.
I found the plot of this very unique with the parallel universe not being exactly the same. I really enjoyed the flirting between Gideon and Lexi. Their relationship was a little too fast-paced for me, but I also get why it was. The side characters were great and interesting, I absolutely loved Alana! It was a pretty quick and easy read too.

I adored this fantasy romance arc and read it in only a few hours. It was a beautiful love story that spanned across parallel universes with a hint of spice. I really enjoyed the writing style and found it easy to follow along with and imagine the settings and characters.

City of Love follows the FMC Lexi and the MMC Gideon who live in different parallel universes but meet when Lexi enters his universe through a portal. I love the idea of fated mates facing huge obstacles but coming together in the end to get their happy ending.
The 'magic' system was awesome and I will always resent the fact that I can't go and live with Gideon and have my own powers.

This book was fast-paced and a nice change to reading drawn-out, long fantasy series. I definitely recommend giving this a go if you are a fantasy romance reader :)

So.

I finished this book in 2 days.

I legitimately could not put it down. Gideon and Lexi were amazing, and I just needed to know how their story turned out.

I haven't read a parallel worlds story before, but oh man, it was so creative! I loved the steampunk kind of vibes that I got from Gideon's world. It was so cool to see the similarities and differences, and I can tell so much care was put into crafting this story.

I was genuinely surprised by the *reveal* and was on edge waiting for the shoe to drop when everyone else figured it out. I loved seeing the abilities the other world had and man, I just want more of this setting. This book was incredible, and I genuinely want so much more of this setting.

I cannot recommend it enough. When it comes out, be sure to grab yourself a copy! It was so unique and I really think you'll love it.

I was privileged enough to have this book sent to me as an ARC, and oh my gosh, I couldn't love this book more! Every chance I could read it, I did, and wow.... just wow...

Not only is the cover absolutely spectacular, but the story had me on the edge of my seat! I love Lexi and Gideon so much and loved their romance and chemistry! And those spicy scenes between them oh my word! I pulled for them so much throughout the book, I blushed with them, I cried with them, and I loved with them!. I also loved all the other characters involved (Vik and Alana have an honourable mention for sure!)

I absolutely loved the concept of this book with the two worlds and writing style, was absolutely superb. I strongly and without a shadow of a doubt highly recommend this book.

First I want to thank the author for the ARC. I enjoyed this story a lot. I liked the plot of parallel universes and portals and I liked the two main characters and the fated mates trope in the story. It was entertaining and the story was smooth.

My critique would be that I prefer a little more relationship development. To me it got too sexual a little too fast. However, that could be just preference but I think a little more development and building up of the relationship would have enhanced the story even more. I understand the characters were connected, but I think some of the more spicy parts came a little too quickly (no pun intended).

All that said, the story was entertaining and I did enjoy reading it.

I really loved the characters and the storyline in this book. Parallel worlds is not something I typically read in fiction books but it has always been an interest of mine, something I’ve wondered about. I enjoyed reading this version of it, this possibility. One world modern, industrialized, and technologically advanced. And one world that resisted the Industrial Revolution, behind in some ways, but metaphysically advanced in so many ways. It sparked a lot of thought and daydreaming about how different things could be with even a few tweaks in history. A really cool mash up of all the fantasy, spiritual, and science topics I love. Both MCs, Lexi and Gideon, are interesting, intelligent, and sweet, but also a little spicy 😏. Library scene anyone?

3.75/5 ⭐️, 2.5/5 🌶

Wow, what a wonderfully unique storyline! I almost gave up on this book because I didn't like the opening line. I'm so glad I picked it back up and gave it another chance!

The good:

-Very unique fantasy world
-Hot, hot, hot 🌶 scene, but I won't share any details so you'll be surprised, too
-Soft, fuzzy kitty
-Found family
-Brave and strong FMC

Where it could have been better:

-I'd have loved more detail, particularly when describing the differences between the two universes and villain motives
-There were also times the story jumped forward by several days or weeks in ways that were jarring -The big reveal felt clunky, and I didn't feel closure by the end
-I'd have liked more about the FMC's friendships with the other female characters

This story is absolutely stunning! From the depth of character perspective to the complex political structure of portal travel between worlds and the twists and turns expertly foreshadowed, this story celebrates a love that transcends space and time.

Gideon and Lexi are an electrifying match. One that is only enhanced by the psychic energy explores in this speculative text. Rooted in clear motivation and strong emotion, the plot is gripping and grounded with natural pacing and an urgency that keeps you turning page after page.

I'd you love 'magic', love, separate worlds, and plot twists, this book, and this author are for you!

City of love was an intriguing read. I enjoyed the magical system, using a portal to travel to another universe that exist alongside the future.

Characters use stones to amplify their powers, but live in a universe without electricity, running cars etc.

Lexi lives in Philadelphia is a highly educated paralegal and has always been different but could never understand why, or where she belonged. She has visions and can easily be triggered by several different things. She has gone through countless jobs due to her visions happening while she's at work. But her bestfriend stumbles upon another universe where she meets Gideon and his friends hoping they can help her understand who she is. Stepping through this portal changes her life as she knows it. But some people are unhappy in this universe and are willing to do anything they can to leave it. Lexi and Gideon work together to save this version of Philadelphia and in the process fall in love. There were some twists I wasn't expecting. L.M Strauss created a very interesting magical system and im interested to see what she does next!

When I tell this book took me out of this world, it literally did. I really felt all the emotions of the characters, plus I felt like I was there seeing it all with my own 2 eyes. Lexi is a Rockstar, and she is definitely an amazing MMC. Gideon is Lexi's hero, but he will also forever be mine.

You have to read it, but this is one of those books where you wanna make sure you pay close attention to everyday detail to have all the feels. It's was truly amazing, and I loved it. 100 recommended!!

This was such a fun read! It was such a unique take on a world involving parallel dimensions. The story itself kept me pulled in from the beginning and just had to keep reading. I've absolutely enjoyed the characters and learning what abilities some of them had. I absolutely loved Gideon and Lexi. That library scene, though. There was a point where I believed I had things figured out. But I was definitely wrong when it came to some of the twists within it. I'll be over here thinking about wanting to go through portals to another dimension for a while.
