DIARY OF A WIMPY KID - THE THIRD WHEEL
By Jeff Kinney
First Edition
217 pp. Amulet Books. $11.99
Publication Date: November 13, 2012

Diary of a Wimpy Kid (The Third Wheel) is a one of a kind novel that represents the life of a typical teenager and presents the daily struggles of Greg Heffley in a humorous and hyperbolic way. This book describes the stages of Greg’s life, starting from having supposed crazy thoughts before birth all the way to his adolescence phase. Some of the supporting characters such as his family, best friend Rowley, and Uncle Gary all contribute (either positively or negatively, but more often the latter) to a variety of events that occur in Greg's life which include, but are not limited to the following: getting a first date, gaining authority to make important decisions in Student Council, and dealing with his irksome brothers & strict parents.
Jeff Kinney’s overall goal in this book is to convey that life as a youngster can be thorny, disappointing, and slightly awkward; not everyone will be fortunate in all aspects of life. Nevertheless, it is possible for them to get through these tough times with the right attitude even though it is okay to repent at first. Furthermore, Kinney wants to make a point that when inconveniences occur, people should have a more carefree reaction to those events rather than blowing everything out of proportion. Kinney somewhat succeeded in persuading his theme because there are many instances the story has in which the theme has been reflected. For example, Greg wore an expensive leather jacket to school to increase his chances of getting a date. When his mom caught him wearing the jacket, however, he got teased. Instead of being furious about it, he made a joke about it. Secondly, when Greg’s date Abigail chose to be with his best friend Rowley instead, Greg was optimistic about the situation and relaxed at home for a week after being struck with chicken pox. However, I felt that Kinney could have done a better job at giving supporting evidence that was more well grounded & descriptive which in turn could have further strengthened his argument.
The writing style the author used was that he wrote a narrative filled with informal language, hyperboles, sarcasm, and similes. The informal language made it easier for readers to relate and understand, while the use of hyperboles and sarcasm made the story comical; consequently, I would state that they were well needed additions to this novel. The humor in “The Third Wheel” was satisfying enough to make the reader not put this book down until they finished it. This is why I feel that this book is worthwhile for anyone willing to enjoy a good laugh. It is also rewarding for people who are not willing to read long and difficult books.
