I love it when from the minute a couple meets you know they are destined to be together; you can feel the heat, see the steam rising off of them, and laugh at the fact they are both equally affected. I especially love it when the two people butt heads right off the bat yet they are both affected by the chemistry. In Desiree Holt’s Aftershock, up and coming band leader Rick Trajean and PR whiz kid Sydney Alexander have no choice but to hold on to their seats as their lives are turned upside down in the span of a few weeks.

From the beginning of this book I was sold on this couple. There was just something so powerful when the two of them together and what made it even better is neither one was looking for it. They just both got hit upside the head with want and desire and that unnamed emotion no one wants to talk about when they first meet.

I was glad to see Rick in a different light. In the first book, I couldn’t really get a read on him other than to know he wanted what was best for the band. There was no questioning his commitment to Lightenin’. Knowing more of his history, it was easy to understand his leadership role with the band and his motivation for making sure everything went off without a hitch without the band losing their identity. I especially enjoyed his realizing that he had to let go of all of the control and trust others to do the jobs they were hired to do.

I liked Sydney from the first moment she walked on the page, mainly because she appeared so confident but we knew she had a lot to prove. It was interesting to watch her realize the mistakes she made developing her original plan for the band and figuring out how important it was to play to the band’s strengths. She had years of experience working in PR but as her first solo assignment she was willing to do whatever it took to make this band a success.

I was extremely happy to see Marc and Emma (from Joy Ride, book one) again and thrilled at the progression of their relationship. The remaining band members were still pretty much in the background but we did see a little more of their personalities in this story and honestly, I’m excited to see what makes them tick.

Although they don’t plan it Rick and Sydney just can’t stay away from one another even though they know it could be bad for both of them business wise. What they didn’t plan on was the band shooting into the stratosphere and a journalist/blogger with an agenda. I admire the band’s manager and Sydney’s boss for their unwavering support of the band and Sydney when they could have easily been jerks about the situation.

Again in this book as with the last, the music scenes were some of the best. Ms. Holt has a way of describing what is taking place so that the reader feels they are a part of the excitement, the overwhelming atmosphere, and the absolute joy the band brings to their audience.
I very much enjoyed Aftershock and am in fact still feeling the effects of the ending of this book as I write this review. It was uplifting, exhilarating, and made my heart sing!

After a life filled with detachment from an Aunt who raised her, Sydney Alexander has spent her adult life trying to prove herself and now she finally has the chance to make a name for herself. Her mentor and boss is giving Sydney the opportunity to handle the PR for Lightnin' an up and coming band about to launch their breakout album and tour. Sydney's enthusiasm is undeniable, but when she makes her first introduction to the band it is not met with the response she had expected.

Lead singer Rick Trajean isn't sure he wants a neophyte handling the PR for his band, it doesn't help that he is overwhelmingly attracted to her either. When Sydney goes about proving she is the best person for the job and open to the bands feedback, Rick knows it is only a matter of time before they succumb to their feelings for one another. Rick knows this is not a one time event, but Sydney has walls that have been in place for so long he has to work hard to break through. When a malicious reporter though begins slinging filth, Rick knows if something is not done about it he will lose Sydney.

The life of rock and roll...Aftershock is hot, and steamy. Desiree gives the life of the characters meaning and the 'real' world feel. When reading this 4star book, you're reading the 'real' life of Sydney and Rick, and not just a book written. Great Read!

Aftershock, an erotica genre book with the theme of a band making their big break. Rick, the lead singer, falls for their PR women, Sydney. But of course they can't just be together with no drama, right? So it's the same repetitive "I can't be with her because it'll damage her reputation" "I can't be with him because it'll hurt the bands success" constantly. A lot of filler if you asked me. I skimmed a bunch of the middle of the book. Then after the band gets their big break that no one expects (band member Marc writes a love song for his fiancee Emma and the crowd loves it) , a beautiful reporter named Melanie tries to get a one on one interview with Rick, pissing Sydney off. Drama, drama, drama. Rick and Sydney sneak off after the first tour concert to have a rendezvous with the sheets in her hotel room, BOOM they figure out they have loved each other this whole time. Gag me! Honestly, not impressed with this book. Almost too painful to finish. I like a story that isn't so the same, like the characters think about more things than the SAME thing they've thought the entire book. They keep referencing Sydney's past but I honestly think it doesn't need to be mentioned at all.... like the main character needs to be damaged somehow; it's old. You don't really get to much depth with all the characters (the other two band members give a "great" and a "yeah" every now and then). This one just wasn't my thing. Thanks to #Netgalley for this book. #reviewathon

Review from jeannie zelos book reviews
My first Desiree Holt book – and what a great read it was. I love erotic romance with a solid story, and this uses a rock band romance to back it up – and that another hook for me ;-)
Anyway Sydney, she's a great lead. She's dragged herself to a point in her career where everthing is crucial. She's had a Plan for success mapped out for years, been following it rigidly and now she's at the point where its all coming together. She's had a tough upbringing, and her aunt had a huge ( negative) impact on her, telling her constantly that relationships were a no no for success, that a man would drag her down. So she'd been undeviating in her approach, worked really hard and boyfreinds are out...then she meets Rick!
Rick too has worked hard for success. His band are a tight team, they are now verging on breaking through to the big time, and though Mark has his fiancee Emma, the others are single but keep it clean. In fact Rick avoids any kind of complication – he thinks there's no room in his life for anyone if he's to take the band to the top. Then he meets their new PR person Sydney!
When they first meet its like the band name – Lightnin. The tension between them is electric, sparks arc and the attraction is visceral, they both feel it right down to their bones. I loved them as a couple. The way they get together slowly, each wondering what they should do, can they stop how they feel, does the other person feel the same, then - one kiss - and its a race to get naked and lost in each other. They're both aware that they need to keep this quiet – it wasn't what either of them planned, and they want time to absorb it and ensure it doesn't affect their careers. The love scenes, and they are just that, not just sex but really loving, though incredibly erotic and electric, are so real that the reader can almost feel the steam between them, the heat they generate. It's really well done. Desiree write erotica as well as romance, and I'll certainly look out for more of her books, she has the art of writing sex scenes down perfectly, full of sensuality and varied, not just one of those clothes off, a few quick pumps, couple of screams and its over....Then of course the spoke is thrown in, and it's chaos. You can see where its going to come from, and waiting for that moment and wondering what will happen next is a nailbiting, tension filled read.
It's a great story, full of realism, and though I know nothing of the rock industry and touring it feels very real. Add in those sensual love scenes and its a winner for me. One to keep.
Stars: Five, cracking read.

* I received this book from Netgalley for an honest review. *

Usually, I am not a fan of rocker style books. However, this book has turned me into a believer. Oh my goodness, there was so much hot steamy sexiness in this book - I may have burned the tips of my fingers from holding my tablet. I adored everything about this book from the characters to the plot to the rock theme.

Sydney was a fun character and a firecracker! She knew what she wanted from the moment she wanted down to Lightnin’s rehearsal. However, there are a couple of things she miscalculated with jumping into head first without you know talking to the band. It's funny to watch her reaction to Rick. She clearly had that first meeting going an entirely different way. However, she learned from the mistake and moved past it. She has so much interaction in the book, it made me tired just thinking of being in her shoes! So many demands on her shoulders and things that are riding on her decisions, she is a super strong character.

Then there is Rick...who doesn't love a strong and alpha guitarist with a soft side. He is amusingly stubborn. There are times you read a sentence of his and you just shake your head. However, he redeems himself when he does something shockingly sweet. I am glad he pushed Sydney's buttons, she needs someone to push them. That girl has some baggage because of her aunt.

The supporting characters in this book are amazing. Emma is fantastic, I haven't read about her in Joy Ride, but I definately will after this. I want to know more about her. Then there is Marc, who just wants to see his friend Rick as happy as he is and for once put himself first in finding happiness. Butch is the music manager, you hope really exist. There are too many stories of people being in the music business for just the money. He is funny and when the time comes super supportive of Sydney. Then there is the antagonist, Macey Shreiner, I hope that lady gets all kind of weird rashes where the sun don't shine! Man I would've punched her and claimed an arm spasm.

Then there is the romance - oh man it's wonderful. Soooo wonderful, like I need to take a cold shower wonderful. I don't want to give you too many details about that, you just have to find out. ;)

I can't wait to read more about the rest of the members of Lightnin.

Rick Trajean is finally seeing all of his hard work pay off. His band Lightnin' has hit it big time. No more small clubs. It's on to the big time! Sydney Alexander is finally flying solo as a PR rep for a band. No more being the assistant. When Sydney and Rick first meet, the sparks fly. Both personally and professionally. See, Sydney has this whole idea of how to market the band, whether Rick agrees with it or not. Sydney has had The Plan drilled into her head ever since she left her bitter at the world and especially at men, aunt who raised her after the death of her parents. The Plan, is to become the top PR person for rock bands, and to never fall in love, since it will only sidetrack her from The Plan.
Of course, love had other ideas. Ideas in the form of Rick.
Once Sydney finally allows the ice around her heart to thaw (all of one chapter), she realizes that she is head over heels in love with Rick, and he is head over heels in love with her. Unfortunately, no love story would be complete without someone who is hell-bent on destroying the blossoming relationship, and of course, this story has it in the form of a music blogger who has slept her way to the top with every male lead to become the go-to music blog in the industry.
But never fear, every romance novel has a Happily Ever After ending, and this one is no different.

I will freely admit that I didn't love this book. I really had trouble connecting to the characters. I felt like their love, while not forced, was very plastic and predictable. It happened almost instantaneously, and both characters were equally as enamored with the other. I was bored in places and even the sex scenes, while steamy, were your basic erotic scenes that can be found in any erotic romance book. There was nothing new here. In all honesty, for an erotic book, the sex was kind of vanilla. Even the ending was annoying. The bitter aunt who raised Sydney realized that she was wrong to be bitter and apologized. Puh-leaze! So didn't buy that!
While this book was the second in a series, it can be read as a stand alone.

Romancing The Book Review

Original Review Published here: http://romancing-the-book.com/2014/06...

Aftershock is the sequel to Joy Ride by Desiree Holt. This book can be read as a standalone with ease. I chose this book because I enjoy reading Ms. Holts books and I read the prior book and wanted to see these characters again.

Sydney Alexander has worked for eight years to get the job of handling PR solo for her firm and all that work pays off when she gets to handle PR for Lightnin a new band on the cusp of breaking into the music world by storm. Sydney is attracted to the lead singer of the group but tries her hardest to keep everything professional. Sydney has had a rough childhood and trying to make a success of herself is extremely important.

Rick Trajean is the lead singer of the group Lightnin and he is about the get all his dreams come true. The closer Rick gets to Sydney the more he has to really look at himself and what he wants in regards to a relationship. Rick is very family orientated so anything beyond what is good for his family and the band is not something he usually looks at.

The one thing that bugged me about the story was that both Butch and Linc continued to ask Sydney if there is a relationship between her and Rick. I find it unbelievable that after asking so many times finding out later everything is no big deal. Also in the beginning of the book Macey Schreiner is an important person but in the end of the book she is just something Linc and Butch could make disappear.

I found this story to be well written. The main and secondary characters were fascinating and appealing. Once I started reading this book, I had a hard time putting this book down. I loved this book. I hope there is another book in the series coming soon.

I loved Desiree Holt's book, Joy Ride. As a matter of fact, I can honestly say that Joy Ride turned me into a Rock Band Romance Junky. With that in mind, I'm here to tell you that Aftershock, the sequel to Joy Ride, has more than satisfied my appetite for this sub-genre of romance.

Aftershock is a truly amazing read. In my opinion this story is even better than Joy Ride. You do get to catch up on what's happening with the hero and heroine of Joy Ride, Marc and Emma, as well as getting to know the other members of the band Lightnin' a bit better. But you also get to meet Sydney Alexander, newly named promotions agent for the happening, new-on-the-scene band Lightnin' who is hot, sexy yet somewhat troubled by some past life experiences and the nasty, bitter aunt who raised her after the death of her parents. You get to learn more about Rick Trajean, leader of the band, Lightnin' while savoring all the sweet, sexy details of how Syd and Rick fall for each other. Then hold on to your hats because things get a little wild when the nasty villain enters the picture. Let me tell you. Desiree Holt writes THE BEST villains and she sure doesn't disappoint in this story. You are going to love hating this villain.

Desiree Holt is one of my absolute favorite authors. I love her writing style. Her characters are always so real. The story line is always sure, succinct and sure to grab your attention. All this is true in Aftershock but she goes beyond the usual. I felt like I was really backstage listening to Lightnin' perform during the concert and interacting with everyone after the concert while reading this book. I highly recommend this book for your reading pleasure. Aftershock is most definitely an Off-the-Charts #1 winner!

Thanks to NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

I'd rate this 3.5 stars if I could. The plot has great potential. Since Desiree Holt used to work in the music business, she knows her stuff and paints an exciting and exhilarating picture of what it's like to be a break-out rock band. Lightnin' is the opener for a very popular established band and has huge success right out of the gate. And Rick is the sexy and very grounded leader of the band. When he meets the band's new PR contact for the first time, sparks fly between them and he is instantly hooked. Sydney, for her part, has her first big chance as the lead PR exec and doesn't want anything to come between her and the success of her Plan. So she fights her romantic feelings, but we all know how that goes. I took off one star because the story dragged a little in the middle, with too much repetition about the band's success, hearing about the media buzz, and cheering on Rick and Syd's romance. Things ratcheted up when hungry columnist Marcy got involved. And the ending, although predictable, was touching and sweet. The characters are charming and attractive to the reader, with interesting back stories. The concert scenes are exciting and fun and could have been played up a little more. The erotic scenes were hot but in this case, less might have been more, meaning that building more sexual tension might have been more effective than having them fall into bed together each night. All in all, though, this is a solid 3.5 star read for me, and I will continue to read more from this author.

I was given a copy of this book to write a review for Cocktails and Books.
The rock group, Lightnin’ is on the cusp of success. A month ago they were a band on the rock-club circuit in L.A., but now they are about to cut a CD and start on a national tour. Sydney Alexander is the PR agent assigned to promote Lightnin’ and Rick Trajean is the leader of the group. From the moment Sydney meets Rick, she is instantly attracted to his sexy good looks, but Sydney knows she must stay away from Rick and concentrate on her job. Rick and Sydney’s sole focus has always been on their careers, they have never had time for anything else, especially a relationship.
Desiree Holt writes an entertaining story. It was interesting to read about a band on the brink of stardom and everything that takes place behind the scenes. Since the story is told from Sydney’s prospective, the reader learns how she handles the publicity for the group and all the thought and preparation that goes into marketing Lightnin’. I admired Sydney’s hard work and dedication. She never lets anything get in the way of the band's success. It's easy to understand why Sydney is attracted to Rick. He is a hot, down to earth, nice guy and a talented performer. I enjoyed this story, but I wish there was more of build up to Rick and Sydney’s relationship. I thought their relationship happened too quickly to be believable, but when Rick and Sydney get together they create some steamy sex scenes. This is the sequel to Joy Ride and is a stand-alone.

**ARC provided by NetGalley for an honest review**

I'm torn between a 3.5 and a 4 on this one. This was not as good as the first book in the series, Joy Ride. I found that I had a hard time with the believability of the characters. Rick and Sydney's romance seemed forced. I kept feeling like, why are they trying to be together" when they were both pushing away from each other. For two people that were so intersted in keeping things under wraps they sure did a bad job of it. There was so much emphasis on their "looks" at each other that it really got redundant. Now, all that being said, the writing was very good and if this had been in the hands of someone less talented I believe this would have hovered between 1 & 2 stars. Ms. Holt is exceptionally talented and puts together a story that does hold your interest, even with the problems listed below. I found myself rooting for Rick & Sydney to overcome their individual challenges. I am not one that usually loves a villain but I absolutely loved the Macey character, she was perfect here! She was like a combo of a cougar and a groupie and that combo totally worked. I wouldn't have minded seeing more of Macey cause she was just so awesome to hate! I am looking forward to the next in this series, I really do want to follow this band through to the end.

NetGalley Free Book

Natalie lost her parents and was raised by her bitter aunt. She was not going to fall for a man because they all they did was suck you dry of all ambition and took your career from you. At least that's what her aunt taught her. She was doing so well at her new career as a PR professional for new bands that her boss put her in charge of her very first band solo. She was going to take "Lightening" to the top of the charts just as soon as she got over the band leader Rick's magnetic presence.

I actually liked this book a lot. The theme was written really well and the layout was well thought out. The characters were written with so much vitality that the reader could actually see them as real people. The love story was written with no extra drama and that is appreciated.

Although it was overly predictable it was still a good afternoon read.

There are two words that describes Aftershock by the talented and imaginative Desiree Holt WOW and AWESOME. I love that she has continued with the band, Lightning and most of all of Rick Trajean. I loved him in the first book, Joy Ride, but have to say he totally shines in this book with Sydney. The thing I love the most about the writing style of Desiree Holt is that in all her books she brings back the past characters making them memorable and loveable. These two, Rick and Sydney, are so perfect for each other it’s hard to deny the attraction between them. Aftershock has it all, drama, passion, romance, action and the kind of love that sizzles and combust with one hot scintillating kiss with a hot rocker. Totally rocked Desiree Holt.

Aftershock was an outstanding read! It had everything you want in a rock romance and so much more. There is the hot lead singer who falls for the sexy new publicist, the warm brotherhood of band mates, and the evil bitch who want nothing but to cause trouble for the young lovers. The band Lightnin' was originally introduced in the book Joy Ride where we met Emma and Marc. I love the fact that Ms. Holt kept Emma and Marc prominent in this story. In a addition to exploring the explosive love between Rick and Sydney, I felt I got an inside look at the business side of launching a new band. This was an all around great read, well written, interesting characters, steamy hot, thoroughly engaging.

I received this book from NetGalley for a review.

I had high expectations for this book based on the description provided. I believe the story could have been developed even more. I loved the idea of this book, and knew that the two main characters would end up together, but it was frustrating how easily certain parts of the relationship were overlooked.

I have never read any books by Desiree Holt, but I would be willing to read another. This book was a sequel to a book she had previously written. My feelings on this book could have been different had I read the books in order.

In my opinion, this book had a few faults, but it was still an enjoyable and quick read. It was interesting to see how Ms. Holt portrayed each character and how she described the music and tour scene.

I was sent a copy of the book for review though Net Galley, as always, all opinions are my own.

Lightnin’ is a band on the verge of breaking out and Sydney Alexander is the PR agent in charge of helping them get to the top. Sparks fly the second she meets Rick Trajean, the frontman for the band. They both spend a fair amount of time fighting their attraction, but anyone who is within ten feet of the pair can tell there is something special between them. I’m not normally a fan of rock band romance stories, but this book manages to leave out all the unnecessary drama and creates some pretty steamy scenes.

There has been a huge outpouring of rock band, music type books lately. When the opportunity arose to read one by Desiree Holt, I jumped at the chance. I have enjoyed quite a bit of her writing and was looking forward to reading Aftershock.

As expected, this one did not disappoint! I really enjoyed the storyline and her twist on the rocker/manager love connection! Rick & Sidney are so hot together. Sydney's insecurities about her background and this being the first major band she works with really make the story perfect.

I highly reccomend this book and hope to see more about the other members of the band Lightnin!

This was a DNF for me. I just couldn't get into this book or the characters. Everything about it felt generic from the name of the band to the names of the shops that were mentioned. I found myself skipping & skimming over parts. The insta-love between the hero & heroine didn't work for me. They went from just meeting to having bland, boring sex. Also, the characters aren't memorable. As I'm writing this review I can't even remember the names of the main characters. So that should tell you something about this book. This book just didn't work for me. Which is to bad because it had potential.

A really great book I couldn't put the book down til I got to the end ..... Rick and Sydney were a heck of a pair in this book and it just made you want to keep on reading ... Along with Marc and Emma ... The dynamics of the whole band and what they were willing to do for each other was great .. The author wrote a great book .... Five stars all the way ....
