Embarrassing cover aside (I read a lot of manga in public, but I just couldn't muster the courage to read this one where others could see), it was a good volume. I won't rag on the cover too much since Blue Exorcist has a lot of equal opportunity fanservice, which is a very nice change of pace from the manga that cater to only men or only women. Anyway, this volume ends the long Impure King Arc, then moves on to a much shorter arc that is completely contained in this volume from what I can tell. I'm glad that the Impure King Arc has finally ended. While it brought out a lot of new and interesting plot threads, it was starting to out live its stay. Moving on to something else is a welcome change.

This volume mainly depicts the characters' growing pains. The characters are changing, but change is not a comfortable process. Yukio and his relationship with Rin take the spotlight this volume. The two have radically different approaches to their problems, and it's entertaining to watch the two trying to figure out which method is right. That is, if a right way even exists.

This volume just reaffirms that Blue Exorcist is one of the best shounen manga currently being published. I highly recommend this series to any manga or anime fan.

Forgive me I'm so late for this manga I can't believe I didn't pick this up sooner??

The obligatory beach fight scene finally arrives in this novel, like every other shonen out there.

Read it for the #48HourJapaneseReadathon.

I love Rin. :)

I lov ehow they managed to fight and win against the demon and the Kraken and I love, love, love that Rin is now able to control his flames. :)

I'm very worried about Yukio, though. :/

Overall, the story and art were good. They were making a bridge to the next arc.

However... This was completely a fan service volume. I don't understand why all the exorcists were wearing skimpy bathing suits except for it being fan service. Everything else was enjoyable.

(Me encantaron Juuzou y Mamushi 😂)

Rin has drawn his sword in order to battle the Impure King, to Mephisto’s glee and Yukio’s dismay. Rin decides he has to be who and what he is – a beast who burns everything. Meanwhile, Shiemi is battling to save Kamiki from the fungus which has engulfed her. Is she strong enough to save her friend?

In the aftermath of the battle, Yukio is furious, but Rin stands his ground. Yukio begins to see he may not always be right. Everyone retur5ns to the inn, where Tatsuma is healing and Mamushi is stricken with guilt for her part in what has occurred. Juzo attempts to console her.

Rin awakens to find himself lying next to Shiemi. She explains she came to check on him and fell asleep. Shura confronts Mephisto and demands to know what he has in mind for Rin. As usual, he’s quite enigmatic.

Juzo announces he is taking Mamushi’s hand in marriage, although she hasn’t agreed to accept his offer. The ex-wires amuse themselves at Rin’s expense. They pretend they have to listen to him because he’s Satan’s son, even as they explore Kyoto. Finally, it’s time to leave – but not back to True Cross Academy. The ex-wires are told to get some swimsuits, they’re going to the beach!

This concludes the Impure King arc – at least I think it does. Rin is coming to terms with who he is, and so are the others. Yukio not so much. But he has his own baggage, and sometimes it’s hard to let go of preconceived notions about one’s family.

The beach story about a forgotten god is great, and Juzo and Mamushi are hilarious. I can’t help but feel he’ll wear her down with time. Rin is every bit as headstrong and impetuous as he ever was but he is finally learning some measure of control. Mephisto is as devious and conniving as ever, but down deep, I think he has Rin’s best interests at heart.

Another great volume, looking forward to more.

A solid ending to the last arc, followed by something that's eben feeling needed for a while now - Yukio and Rin finally have to air out some of their differences and try to come to terms with one another and their relationship. I thought it was handled pretty well, making the whole volume pretty enjoyable!

The battle with the Impure King continues and is finally wrapped up in this volume, which I'm rather grateful for because the pacing was starting to falter a bit. There's only so long you can keep things ramped up to 11 before your attention span starts to wane.

Some of Shura's past is dropped which I liked (it's never enough though, imo). She's apparently a kunoichi? Is this why she dresses so slutty? Lol, no really. I know part of it is "sword access" but I'm so over the big tittied t&a character (yes, I know this is shounen, idc).

I liked that Shura was both protective of Rin when questioning/threatening Mephisto and also trying to gently assure Yukio on some things. Speaking of, poor boy is really going through it and I personally vibed with it. He, like Rin, is also stuck between two places - being an exorcist (adult), and being a kid like his brother and the other ex-wires. Also, dealing with the realization that maybe, possibly Father Fujimoto groomed him to be Rin's protector and so, robbed him of his own childhood is ... a lot. I like that we're seeing that Fujimoto wasn't this perfect person like everyone claims him to be, and it'll be interesting to see how this plays out in later volumes. Because as kind as he's treated Rin and Shura, he really fucked over Yukio.

The characterization with Kamiki and Shiemi is really driving me crazy. I was foolishly hoping that because this creator is a woman, we would get more character depth/action for the female characters but nope. Kamiki gets caught up so Shiemi can finally power up and save her (which seems to be the only way Shiemi can be fussed to do anything competent, when she literally has no other choice). Kamiki is supposed to be talented (she was able to call on two kitsune demons to answer at her beck and call) but when shit hits the fan, she falters - usually to let Shiemi shine.

Shiemi is essentially "the Daphne" - there to be pretty and a damsel in distress but occasionally manages to save herself (or rather she ends up getting free and isn't hurt in the process). I do not like that Shiemi is going to be a toy the Okamura brothers fight over, it's so boring. I didn't really care for the romantic undertones here, mainly because she's just such a boring character to me. She's like the Hinata, essentially made useless until the author remembers she can actually do shit. The rest of the time, she's just a pretty, soft spoken ornament for which ever boy to fawn over/look over.

The second arc of the book is just the anime equivalent of a beach episode and didn't really add to the plot. That the anime has its own beach episode is hilarious and was done better, imo.

I did like that the rest of the kids were teasing Rin though ("whatever Satan's kid wants"), it was cute and I always enjoy seeing their friendships amongst each other.

I want to know more about that puppet kid!

3.5

This volume finally ends the Kyoto arc and we finally get to the stuff that the anime didm't covered. I wasn't sure what to expect when we immediately would see out heroes battle a Kraken, but I was pleasantly surprised.

We got a little more focus on Rin and Yukio, most importantly their relationship. Yukio simply cannot accept Rin's power at all. He is constantly stressed and high on alert because he knows that at any moment the Vatican may choose to execute Rin. This, of course, stresses Yukio all the more out because Rin refuses to follow orders from the higher ups even though his intentions are good and pure - he can't just stand back and watch innocent people be hurt and in danger. This is why he constantly jumps in head first without any real plan. He seems to mostly go with his gut.

Meanwhile, Yukio has always looked up to Rin and Father Fujimoto. He seeks to surpass Rin and has vowed to protect Rin no matter what. Being raised as an exorcist from a very young age, I can see why Yukio may have biases against demons, especially the Blue Flanes of Satan and how Satan himself killed Father Fujimoto. I'm guessing that Yukio is also afraid of the flames consuming his brother and considering all the self hatred Yukio has for himself, that sudden blue eyes that appeared in the previous volume, well it will only serve to increase that self hatred no doubt. Rin is right that Yukio needs to accept Rin as he is, Blue Flamee and being Satan's son and all. Rin can't help his heritage and power anymore than Yukio can, whatever may be happening with his blue eyes. As Shira said, Yukio is only 15, he should be having fun and enjoying himself, not worrying and stressing himself to death :'(

Yukio also really needs to confide in Rin rather than bottling everything up, but sadly I know it will all go to hell. Still, no matter how much Yukio may hate Rin, he also loves him and this volume really showcased it, I think; that Yukio seems to want to lock Rin in a cage to keep him safe, but he knows Rin won't ever stay put anyway even if he were to do that. But like Rin said, both of them are brothers and they only have each other. I just hope as the manga progresses they can find themselves in a place where they can really communicate and trust in each other because both Yukio and Rin do love each other no matter how much they may fight and get on each other's nerves.

Rin & other exorcist fight against impure king. Rin Finally defeat impure king using his koma sword, bon still alive - I'm relieved because I kinda like that character. Neko apologize to Rin for everything that he did to him. After the fight, shiemi confessed to Rin that she will be friend with rin as friends for forever - poor Rin for getting himself friend zone 😂even renzo pity him & pat on Rin's shoulder. All Rin's friends - I'm still warmed up to them because of their changes character's development. Not to mention I don't know who I'm gonna ship shuraXyukio or shuraXmephi moment's - 🤔♥️ all Exorcist standby at beach wearing swimsuit especially Rin & Rin's friends - they about to kill freaking kraken when kraken grabbed the helicopter, Rin started to go to the sea with his koma sword & sheimi tag along with rin even involved yukio who tried to stop his elder brother for doing idiot things. Rin & yukio argued a lot over things that related to blue flames. After the fight against kraken, I feel bad for that whale who fought against kraken even Rin finished it in the end. I feel like yukio is not okay even not telling Rin the truth about imperial king incident, he needs closure n wished Rin knows the truth about it & tried to make sense out of yukio.

okay its official this series rocks. finished this volume and had a fair amount of fun with it because of all the quirky bits.

the first two chapters were dedicated to wrapping up the Kyoto arc which is probably like my favourite arc in the series so far. the final two chapters did a good job of bringing this amazing arc to an end as well as introducing a possible character arc for a main character. i also liked how the last little bit of the chapter was the vast sight seeing in Kyoto wrapping up with a group picture at Kyoto tower. this made a touching end to the arc and shows how the cast now trusts each other again after the earlier issues between the cast. the other chapters were basically filler at a beach with the cast fighting a Kraken. not a lot really happened here other then a cool twist to do with nee and rin and yukio making up.

again a really good volume only bogged down by the filler arc. the art style is still pretty good and the characters continue to grow to be even more interesting and fun. curious where the next arcs will take the series.

Cover aside, this volume was fairly interesting to say the least! For one thing, I love how Rin and Yukio are slowly starting to understand each other better. Yukio hates himself (I'm still not sure why exactly that is), but he also doesn't want to support Rin's blue flame because to him, he only sees it as Satan's flame. Rin, however, has learned to accept his blue flame as his own. I can see both sides, but ultimately Rin is arguably more correct.

That scene with Shura and Mephisto was quite..."steamy"? That's probably not the right word for it, but it was played off that way (kind of). Although I'm pretty sure neither one of them is actually "in love" with the other. If anything, it's just "lust", if that. Whatever it was, Shura is right to suspect Mephisto of having some ulterior motive involving Rin. I tend to like characters like Mephisto who are "sneaky" and sometimes have ulterior motives. I'm not sure what Mephisto is really after, but whatever it is, I hope we'll find that out soon...

THE GOOD

Rin and Yukio: Rin has finally found confidence in himself and that is a wonderful thing, but I wonder how long that confidence can last when it's so obvious that Yukio isn't being a very supportive brother. And it's not that I don't understand where Yukio is coming from, but he's not judging Rin for being Rin, he's judging Rin for being the son of Satan. And at the end of the day, they're the same thing, but also so completely different...

Shiemi: She's becoming quite a tough girl! I hope she continues to grow.

Jump and Mamushi: That outta nowhere marriage proposal was so cute... but I think they may kill each other...

THE BAD

Not really much about this volume struck me as bad.... besides Yukio's crappy attitude.

The big ending to the Kyoto arc is bombastic and lets Kazue Kato go wild with some art, a few big double page splashes are jaw-dropping. After that we get the obligatory beach issue... no wait, it's a KRAKEN issue! Hell yeah for giant monster fights, and we get to check in on Rin/Yukio/Shiemi after the Kyoto arc. It's a good wind-down from the lengthy prior arc, look forward to what happens next. My only real complain is that I don't understand Mephisto's plan and I don't see why I should trust or care about him, it's so weird and secretive that I find myself tuning out whenever he's on the page since I know the series isn't going to reveal his big plans so soon anyways.

I didn't like it as much as the one before. The first half wraps up the arc and the second half is fluff, but I liked the fluff I'll say, even better than the wrap up really. I wish that one girl wore more clothes though. Part of it takes place at beach and that could use some clothes too. I like stories, but I don't like sex in them, even if it's not really sex. I also like my characters to wear clothes.
