Lovin' in the Mountains #1

The Wounded Mountain Man

Wade
When a training accident ends my military career before it properly begins, I'm lost with no clue what to do next. After wallowing in self-pity for a year, I finally return to the small mountain town I grew up in.

When I show up on my best friend's doorstep unannounced, broke, and smelly after two days of hitchhiking, Logan takes me in and makes me feel like I'm not a total loser. We quickly fall back into our usual rhythm, and it's like we were never apart.

Spending time with him reignites a flame that refuses to burn out. That we could be more than just friends. Even if he left no room at graduation for anything else to develop.

Logan
Wade arriving unexpectedly is a surprise, but it's something my ASD brain can process and manage. Catching a close-up of his wet, glistening body as he steps out of the bathroom without a towel? Uh, that's another thing entirely.

I've carved out a simple, quiet life for myself in the mountains. Being on the spectrum—I'm super organized, have strong attention to detail, and am routine-oriented—has made my love life nonexistent. It's got nothing to do with my feelings for Wade.

I realized I was in love with him in high school, but I made a mess of things at graduation. Now that he's back, maybe I can make up for that mistake? And if I can, maybe he'll stay for good.

I just needed a quick one. My head can't handle more today.
Nice, even if it's written a tiny bit oddly.

I'm not usually a sex-driven person, but these last few days, I've been busting out a load daily. 🧐

I slow my thrusts and speed up my hand movements as Logan loses it, his whole body rocking, his cock erupting with wild streaks of goo that splash up to my beard and all over the place, like a blender without the lid on. 😳

Wade returned to the mountains after his military career ended before it even started.

He knocked on Logan’s, his best friend, door. Of course, he was welcome.

Having Wade back made Logan happy. His simple and super-organized life has always room for his best friend.

Years ago they had an almost kiss. Logan made a half comment that came out wrong and made Wade retract directly.

Wade doesn’t want to lose his best friend, so he tries to temper his strong feelings for Logan, who doesn’t feel the same. Ha! Little does he know!

Watching both men was lovely, Wade was injured but trying to get his life on the rail, Logan working with veterans and thereby also helping Wade. Their attraction was strong and thankfully they finally acted on it.

Overall a lovely read, the main and secondary characters were lovable. Altogether a nice bunch of people living together in a small mountain town.

What a gorgeous, sweet, simple love story! No drama, (well, nothing really nasty), no angst, just a super sweet rekindling and a town full of kind, helping hands. My only complaint is that it ended too soon. Oh, and also was thrown for a loop with the couple of acronyms at the end I had no idea what they stood for. A truly lovely read.

Very lovely story of two best friends finally having their chance to be together.
Wade returns to his hometown in the mountains after a year of being hurt and miserable: his career in the military ended because of an injury and after rehab and some times at his mom's, he goes back to his best friend.
Wade and Logan were very different but also inseparable during high school, they also shared a moment but they couldn't seize the opportunity, depite being secretly in love with each other.

Wade is confused and scared, he doesn't have any plan for his future and has nothing to offer to Logan; Logan lives a simple life, he likes his routine and, because of that, he thinks a man like Wade can't be interested in a guy like him.

I liked very much how Logan supported Wade and never made him feel worthless. And I also liked how Wade was a safe space for Logan to be himself.

What prevented me from giving a higher rate:
I would have loved for the story to be more deepened, some themes remains too superficial, like Wade's recovery and his difficulties with dealing with the loss of his dream to be deployed.

I'll definitely keep reading this series, the next stoy seems very promising.

I received an ARC of this book from Booksprout and this is my honest review.

I would’ve read a full length version of this without a doubt! Casey Cox should definitely consider a mountain man full-length book… or a series (please and thank you!)

I loved this book! Logan and Wade get a second chance to have more than just a friendship when Wade arrives at Logan’s place after being injured in the military. What follow is a great adventure of two best friends finding out they have more than friendly feelings for each other and decide to give their love a try. Surrounded by great friends and family, they find out that you really can have it all!

1.5 stars.

I have a few gripes that made this one low. One is that the characters took their cat to the vet because he had a hairball. Why. Just why. Get some hairball food, maybe some hairball control gel.

Second is the writing. Especially for the sex scenes. At one point, a character climaxes, and it is described as "like a blender without the lid on." I'm not looking to be grossed out when I'm reading my little romances, okay? I don't need that visual.

Lastly, the way this book glorifies the military is a little weird. Like, yeah, veterans deserve respect and often get the short end of the stick once they get home, but this book is a bit OTT about it. There's a lot of fawning over the military by all the characters that just didn't sit well for me.

Wade and Logan's story is short, sweet, steamy and simply perfect, in my opinion at least and I hope that helps you decide this is a book for you too.

What do I love about it? Casey Cox gives voice perfectly to the issues each character faces, not only in the immediate story but in life too. Logan, let's start with him although the lives of both men are equally important and impacted through this story. Logan has ASD and is a triplet. He has a fantastic family, a home and mortgage and is incredibly organised. He is also very aware and accepting of his condition. It is the way that Casey Cox weaves all of this seamlessly into the story that struck me. No fuss is made, this is who Logan is and we are led to understand his character. In the same way we are introduced to Wade not as the veteran with PTSD and other anxiety but as Logan's best friend since childhood, as the one who always has and always will be there for his best friend and his family but who won't try to rely on anyone other than himself.

Wade arrives on Logan's doorstep unexpectedly and broke. He has hitched for three days to get there from his parent's home knowing only that he wants to be with his best friend. He does harbour hope too, hope that the kiss that didn't happen, the one he so desperately wanted when they were graduating high school might still be a possibility, that there could be a spark between the two of them. The trouble is sometimes, with being besties, that you don't always talk openly about everything. If Logan and Wade can re-find their footing with one another, if Logan can help Wade find himself again, it might be that they can find their way to admitting their feelings too.

This is a heartfelt, honest, genuine story woven subtly and gently yet sharing some big themes. I love the voice Casey Cox gives Logan and Wade and I can't wait to see how the series is going to develop.

This is a sweet friends to lovers story featuring a man returning home struggling with where he wants his life to go, and the best friend who lives in the small mountain town nervous to explore life. Wade shows up on Logan's door after a year from being discharged from the military due to a training accident. Wade and Logan have wanted each other since they were in high school but never talked about it and then went on with their lives. I liked that these two still have a strong friendship. They did keep in touch after Wade left, but there's still some areas that they never discussed. One of which is the almost kiss that both of them still kind of think about. I loved how Wade found his stride with his sister in law, niblings, and some other military vets giving him the sense of home he's been missing. Logan is nervous in social situations and hasn't really let himself meet many new people. The support he has with Wade helps him break out of this shell he's been in. There's a good amount of steam for this being a novella and these two do communicate well which I appreciated.

The reason for only four stars is that Logan has been diagnosed on the autism spectrum (I believe). However, I'm not sure why it was even mentioned in passing since it never came up again. He didn't talk to Wade about this or what he might need in support of this. It seemed a tad out of left field or like something that was going to be explored and then never was. It felt that we got a lot more of Wade's background than we do of Logan, and it's not bad per say, I just would've liked to have learn a bit more about Logan too. I actually can't even remember what it is that Logan does at the center...or even if it was mentioned (but I know that he looks good in suits ;) ).

This is a cute, fluffy, quick read with some fun characters. I enjoyed it but would've liked to have seen it flushed out just a bit more.

A quick, sweet story with two MC's who are easy to like, mild angst, sexy times, and a long awaited love.
After a serious injury that has lifelong effects, Wade is struggling to move on as his future seems so uncertain to him. Fortunately, his best friend Logan is more than willing to help him out, not only providing a place to stay, but also by giving him a bit of a nudge to guide him in the right direction. Being back in his hometown helps settle Wade and he finally begins to get back on track. While Wade struggles with what to do with his life and the self doubts, Logan seems settled and has managed to find what works for him and his level of autism, and Wade couldn't be more proud of him.
Having known one another and been so close for so many years, they are starting from a pre-existing connection. Each felt a romantic love towards one another, but a misunderstanding during graduation put in on pause. Reuniting brings all those romantic feelings to the surface and it doesn't take long for them to finally take the next step and fall in love.
Wade has some emotional moments that will tug your heartstrings and Logan provides a lot of levity to balance it out. I would have liked to read more about the romantic feelings they feel now, rather than rely on just their past friendship as the basis for their connection.
This book was good for a short story, it was enjoyable, but feels like there's more to tell. I think it would have been better as a novella.

“The one that got away will always be that constant ‘what if’ that lingers in the back of your mind.” – Anonymous

Wade, of' The Wounded Mountain Man' by Casey Cox, is not in a good place. Wounded in a training accident right after joining the military, he goes into a tailspin. After therapy, Wade wanders around, trying to get himself together. He is at his wit's end until he decides to swallow his pride and go to the town Wade grew up in and to Logan, the only man he ever loved.

Logan is astounded when Wade, dirty and tired, ends up at his front door. He never expected to see him again, especially after their misunderstanding. Nevertheless, here he is. Logan invites him in and offers him a shower and food. When he realizes that Wade has nowhere else to go, he feels sad, but it also warms his heart to know that Wade, the man with whom he fell in love in high school, is the one Wade chose to come to. The feelings that formed between them so many years ago are still alive. Can they clarify their misinterpretation and go on from there?

'The Wounded Mountain Man' is a touching story about Wade and Logan, whose love, thought to be lost, is rekindled. Thank you, Kelly, for giving Wade and Logan a happy ending.

"It's you, Wade. You've always made me feel seen. You're the only person who chose to be friends with me and not my brothers when we were younger. You've always accepted me and all my idiosyncrasies. You make me feel it's okay to be, well, me."

I loved this book. The story was short but very sweet. I loved both Logan and Wade. The attraction and chemistry between them sizzled, and obvious enough other people saw it. Despite the strength of their friendship, both had insecurities and self esteem issues. And both emotionally supported the other and was confident in them.

I loved the supporting characters. They were fun and I loved their support of our guys- whether it be Hattie and Joe urging them to admit their feelings for each other, or Wade's stepdad Dale who was happy to be a part of his life and gave him money when he was broke after his accident in the military. Tex and the other vets assuring Wade he's a real vet in spite of what happened. The only iffy one was Rufus, Logan's cat who cockblocked them twice lol

A very beautiful romance. A slow burn as their first bedroom scene is 70% in, and I wish it were longer so I could see more of their relationship. But I also loved it just as it was. I hope it becomes an audiobook someday! 5 stars.

At high school graduation, Wade decided to come clean to his best friend about his attraction with a kiss. However, best friend Logan says “We shouldn’t,” and the moment is gone. Logan stays in their small town; Wade joins the military.

Some time later, Wade shows up at Logan’s door. Medically discharged due to an accident, Wade feels like a failure. Logan takes him in, and helps him get acquainted with some other veterans who accept Wade as one of them, no matter how short his time in the service. The scenes with the drop in veterans’ group are heartwarming.

Gradually, the two rediscover their deep bond. Wade starts fixing up his sister-in-law’s struggling café, and gets others involved in the project. Logan and veterans at the center where he works make the café *the* place to be. Logan and Wade also work together to help Wade’s sister-in-law with her children while her husband is deployed.

It’s a short, sweet, romance with a happy ending – and a teaser at the end with one of Logan’s triplet brothers.

I picked this book up mainly for the autism rep, and unfortunately it didn’t deliver. It seems like it wanted to focus on Wade, which is fine, but if that’s the case, I honestly don’t know why the author decided to make Logan autistic, because it’s barely mentioned and all of Logan’s autistic traits could be read as simply personality traits. Logan is extremely high functioning with just a few generic traits, and everything is very surface level and glossed over. All of that makes it feel even more out of place when Logan says this in the epilogue: I am who I am, and being with a partner who embraces every part of me, quirks and all, has helped me not just accept myself but to really lean in and celebrate all of the one-of-a-kind traits that make me, me. This would only make sense if we actually saw Wade embracing anything or any of Logan’s one-of-a-kind traits. Most of it is all tell and no show. And it’s yet another book with autism rep that seems to avoid the words “autism” or “autistic” (only “ASD” and “on the spectrum” are used once, respectively), which is a pet peeve of mine. 🙃

Cute near 2nd chance romance
Wade returns back home to his best friend Logan after a training exercise goes wrong when he was in training for the military. Wade nearly kissed Logan just before graduation, but Logan said we shouldn’t. And that stopped everything except Wade being super attracted to Logan.
Logan got a surprise when his best friend turned up at his door, rather stinky after hitchhiking to make his way back. He has been attracted to Wade since high school, but it just never happened, but now that he’s back, could this be their time??

As an army wife this book really touched my heart. I am so glad that Wade had somebody like Logan in his life. The attraction between these two is obvious to anyone got a quick shout out to Hattie, who I just adore didn’t book.
I really enjoyed this book and I liked the banter between them. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

story of Wade and Logan

This is a best friends to more romance novella, featuring Wade and Logan, and is book one in the Lovin’ In The Mountains series.

Wade and Logan are best friends, and they both had a crush on each other in high school but a little mis-communication saw them not act on their feelings. Wade then went off to train for the military but had an accident and returned home to ask Logan if he could stay with him while he sorted out his next steps.

One little lack of towel saw the feelings they both have come to the surface in this low angst story. It’s sweet and caring and just a really great novella.

Things to expect in this book are:
Book 1 in series
MM romance
Best friends to more
Veteran MC
Hurt / Comfort
Low angst
Neurodivergent rep
Size difference
Roommates
Mis-communication
Both crushing hard
Spicy times
Admit feelings
Found family

After an unfortunate accident, Wade returns to the small town he and Logan grew up and graduated in. With no qualifications, he is given a chance to help at the diner and clear things up with his best friend.
This is a short read, but I have to mention the awesome cover, unfortunately the designer was not named. This looks real, like a photo not a picture or graphic rendition. So, well done! More importantly, this author has learned the art of storytelling in contemporary romance without the blasphemy and I look forward to more like this. It was so much more enjoyable. Thirdly, I had burst out into loud laughter when a timer was mentioned and a countdown began.
Thank you Casey Cox and BookSprout for giving me the opportunity to leave my honest and voluntary review. I hope you continue in this vein.

Wade has come back to his hometown. He's crashed at his best friend's house. He is bi and came out in high school when his best friend came out as gay.
Logan has been friends with Wade since they were little. He regrets that when they were at high school graduation and Wade tried to kiss him he said "no wait".
Wade visits his sister in law and she tells him he should talk to Logan. They need to communicate. So they do and Logan tells him he didn't mean not forever but for later. Unfortunately he never got the chance to expand on the statement.
They are slowly finding their way around each other. Will they be able to communicate and clear the air? Will they get their new beginning?
A lovely story about two men who aren't very good with communicating with each other.

Logan & Wade
A fun best friends to lovers story. Wade has to work on improving his self-worth after being discharged early from the military for an accident during training. He knows he's always got Logan's friendship, but he's worried that his other, beyond friendly, feelings could interfere and compromise their relationship. Luckily, Logan has been feeling the same way since high school, but the two friends had been avoiding the topic for several years. When they both come clean about how they feel, they know their lives have been changed in the best way.

I also loved the camaraderie among the gentlemen at the Veteran's community center. The environment is incredibly welcoming and supportive.

I highly enjoyed The Wounded Mountain Man, and I'm looking forward to where the series takes us next.

This has to be my favourite book this year! It was just such a compelling and captivating storyline. Casey is a brilliant author whose books I always enjoy. I don't know why but I always like the military aspect but so many authors fall short covering the mental scars that sadly so many are left to deal with. Though a shorter read Casey still manges to cover this sensitively and with depth allowing us to fully understand this side of their character. I loved that this was two best friends being there for each other but hiding their true feelings so as not to loose their friendship. Such an emotionally honest storyline that i loved. Great secondary characters helped make this a perfect read!.

fun best friends to lovers romance

I read this in one reading. It’s more like a novella. They’ve been best friends forever and always felt attracted to each other. Wade returns to his hometown after a freak accident saw him discharged from the military. Logan is happy with his life, structured but is so excited when his best friend suddenly knocks on his door and asks if he can stay.

It was cute how they were cautious but realised what they feel goes beyond anything else. I wish it was longer but enjoyed the whole story.

yeah, this story is short, but i dont want to even skim it.
this story has no reason for existing. relationship between characters are told, not shown. they like each other just because. no reason. they always were in each other's lives and i guess that's it. they could have been in relationship from the first page of the book if mc1 listened to mc2 for 1 more minute and let him finish sentence.
dialogue with other characters also soulless and without depth. they go like:
"hey, man, didn't see you in a long time"
"yeah, how have you been?"
"meh. life is fucked"
"sure it is." he chuckled.
"so when you and mc2 hooking up?"
and so on and on yada yada yada
characters are in love simply because author said so, world is stale, dialogue dry

My!, no sooner had I started to read this book then I had finished it. I was glad there was a story there and not just one sex scene after another.
Wade goes home after being injured in military training and stays with his unrequited love, Logan. In the 79 pages there is an insta love but enough of a story that it wasn't PWP.

This was a sweet story of two friends who finally get the chance find happiness and love together! I’m a big fan of second chance and really liked Logan and Wade and their story felt genuine and honest and it was easy to root for them. This is a quick read but I’m definitely looking forward to more!

This is a modern mm romance, a standalone story. It’s a great book about two guys in their middle 20’s who have been besties since childhood and both secretly in love with one another. It’s a beautiful story about a wounded man putting the pieces of his life back together again while finding his HEA!

Short but sweet with little angst. As the wife of a career military officer here in the US though, I had to laugh at the idea of a veterans facility with a day spa, a delicious cafeteria, and employees wearing designer suits. That is nowhere close to reality.
