Buzzed, bored, and more than a little sexually frustrated, best friends Matt and Bryce get what if gay guys are on to something? Their initial experiment goes fantastically wrong, proving they’re just a couple of straight guys after all.
Failure never sits well with Matt, though, and he’s not convinced you have to be gay to make gay sex work. He hits up Google for research, buys some decent whiskey to smooth the road, and stows a pack of Durex in his nightstand. Now all he has to do is get Bryce over to his place and convince him to try again.
When Bryce offers his own suggestion, however, it blows Matt’s careful planning to shreds.
This bondage bromance features two straight guys, a couple of neckties, sturdy bedposts, some mismatched extension cords, and almost an entire bottle of lube. And some merciless tickling. (Part 1 of the series Breaking in Bryce / 23k words. Part 2, "Pins & Need," is out now.)
2.5 Most disappointing Rider I’ve read so far, and I’ve read a bunch by now. This author’s plot ideas are always so juicily good. With 2 straight boys wondering what the big deal about gay sex is, Whiskey & Bedposts is no exception to that rule. The execution was so wonky though.
It started out cute enough, with the boys not really knowing how to get this gay sex show of theirs on the road, and feeling unsure about how far the other was willing to go. I know, right? But what followed was a dish of scraps that were neither fish nor fowl... I’m not going to quote that “his biceps move under his skin like dolphins” line, but will point out the plot related stuff that didn’t work for me:
* it’s up to one of the boys to take the lead. He’s adorably inexperienced, so he turns to tickling the other boy. Great idea, fits their D/s play like a glove..for a while. Then it goes on for too long. This took the edge off my excitement. * Said inexperienced boy suddenly exclaims things like While I’m undeniably a bit of a fan of this type of dirty talk, I had to raise an eye-brow this time. These lines felt so out of character. We’re talking presumed straight boys being clueless as to how to have sex in general suddenly confidently uttering hardcore D/s lines? Uhm, no, even in my PWP I appreciate a certain level of plausibility. * The wonkiest thing: the sudden heavy foot fetishism. Took me totally off-guard. 0_o One minute you’re reading a GFY/coming of age scene, the next you’re reading THIS: “Smell it,” I say. I push my sock against his nose. (...) His toe pushes against my tongue. The taste of attic floors and softball fields is stronger now, my saliva activating it, my tongue rubbing over the texture. It’s a clean-dirty taste, and I like it as I suck. I wonder how much this is like sucking a dick. The skin’s coarser, harder. It’s shorter.” And the foot shizzle goes on, and on. I don’t discriminate against feet, but again, I’m not sure how this suddenly discovered mutual obsession with feet fits into this short story as a whole.
It’s like the author wanted to stuff everything PWP into Whiskey & Bedposts at once. That’s fine, but these green as grass kiddos don’t really pull it off. And I can't help being a little disappointed that there wasn't more plot. A tag about the foot action would’ve been appreciated as well. After all, it’s one of those kinks not everyone’s dying to read about. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Let's just say that this book confirms my official fanhood (fandom?) of Zoe X. Rider. Her stories are a lot of fun: hot, clever, a little bit different. Fortunately, she's written quite a few. Plenty of exciting kindle fun to look forward to.
Y'know, I personally get so deep into darker erotica and more extreme fantasies so much of the time that I tend to forget how utterly hot it can be to read a simple, consensual bondage scene between two totally smitten characters. After all, it's "just" a dude tying another dude up for sex; in a genre filled to the brim with dudes tying up other dudes for sex, how remarkable can this really be? When the only limit is our imaginations, it's easy to get caught up in elaborate, boundary-pushing material about the breadths and scopes of fictional BDSM -- spy settings, kidnap fantasies, secret societies, slave worlds, shifters and aliens and incubi, oh my -- and just as easy to forget that a truly sexy, memorable story depends far more on its writing than it does on its setting.
And the writing in this book? In a word, delectable. Writing erotica is, ultimately, a technical skillset. It benefits from prose, pacing, anticipation, resolution, and character work. And all those elements in "Whiskey & Bedposts" take what could've been a very prosaic vanilla ficlet and turn it into a vivid and provocative adventure between two guys exploring their inhibitions and relationship. Under Zoe X. Rider's skills, her characters' escapades come across as humorous, engaging, enticing, and oh so very fucking hot. And it's honestly quite refreshing to take a step away from my usual diet of edgy rapey fiction to partake in some delightful tie-up romps between two friends every once in a while.
Now this was interesting. Bryce and Matt decide to find out what all the fuss about gay sex is, of course they don't do any research and try to rush it and it ends up not happening.
So they both do a bit of thinking and one does some research and they decide to try it again. The entire time Matt was 'torturing' Bryce was really hot. With his tickling and the pain he had Bryce's nerves and arousal so confused that by the time it came to the actual act of sex it seemed to go off without a hitch.
There's a lot, and I mean A LOT of good, hot sex here, but I wanted more plot. I wanted to know more about the band and what was going to happen with them. Jared needs to be brought down.
I'm not really into foot play. Don't find it arousing, in any circumstance. If this author could make me hot and bothered about the MC licking a foot, I think they deserve a 5 star rating.
When I read in the blurb that Bryce offers his own suggestion for the evening, blowing Matt’s careful planning to shreds, this was not what I expected. I thought there would be a role reversal. But in fact, Bryce was into light bondage. And the sensuality with which Matt handled the whole night (the light tickling, the caresses, observing each facial reaction of Bryce, the foot licking, the switch in giving each other a BJ)... somebody pour some cold water over me. I felt flushed for the entire read!
Not bad, but not good either. Book #1 is told from Matt's POV, Book #2 from Bryce's POV. Both guys are friends, supposedly straight guys who wonder "why sex with a guy is so wonderful? Let's try it", which of course is a ridiculous plot, but when they are well done, I don't mind. In fact, I like them. But here, they both are hanging around in Matt's house, drinking beer and playing games, until one of them makes the first move and the other is "thank God, I've been thinking about this all week (since we talk about it)". Book #1 is their first time together, where there Bryce is tied to bedpost (yes, I like that) and then also a weird, yuck kink where they smell and lick each other's dirty feet. Gross. I didn't know that was a kink! I hope I don't read about it never, ever again. Matt himself knows his socks are smelly, and he also notices Bryce's feet are dirty, like he was walking barefoot around his house. Gross. At least they end the story confirming they are a couple, and that they weren't just fooling around.
Book #2 Bryce is insecure, did that really happened? Did Matt really like it? Because Bryce LOVES to be tied up and loves the humiliation, and in summary, loves to be a sub. Sending Matt a message it is all cleared up, they both are really into it and go to buy the necessary stuff (ropes, bandanas, clothespin) and then we have another sex scene that, again, takes about 90% of the short story. It was all hot and whatever, but I was a bit uncomfortable since Bryce is all tied up and can't even say a thing (they don't even say anything about having a freaking safeword and Matt tells Bryce that he won't use the clothespin if Bryce wasn't comfortable, but how the hell would Matt know if it was ok since Bryce had his mouth stuffed with bandana? Ugh, I don't know, the whole bdsm made me a bit uncomfortable because they didn't talk about it beforehand, and even though Bryce loved all of it, he wasn't able to say anything since his mouth was gagged.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I still enjoyed this! This story is told from Matt's perspective only and I wish we had Bryce's POV as well. However, the story seems more complete to me after reading Pins & Need back-to-back since it's told from Bryce's perspective.
Initial Review 3.5 stars
After a disastrous first time at anal sex, Matt wants to try it again. What he doesn't know is that his best friend, Bryce, wants to as well and he also wants something else. It was a great little sexy read and I can't wait to see what happens next in Pins & Need.
I liked the characters. The action was fun. Not much of a plot. I could have used more romance or background information on how they got to this point in their friendship... Other than either not having been in a relationship for several months.
The entire book is basically one long and weird sex scene with bondage and a foot fetish. It would have been a fine story, if I had found it sexy. But I didn’t. At all.
