Author of Sweet and Spicy Romance from Yesteryear #sweetandspicyromance

Welcome to my little corner of the internet! So who am I? Well, it's quite simple actually. I'm a history-lovin' author who writes in her fuzzy pants and loves her horses! My stories have a pinch of sweetness, a dash of spice, and a dollop of history. Sound interesting? Then slip into your petticoats and curl up on the couch while I transport you to the past!

Growing up in Nevada, reading was always a pastime that took second place to trail riding and showing horses. When I did find the time in my youth to curl up with a book, I found enjoyment in the Saddle Club Series, the Sweet Valley High series, and the classics of Anne of Green Gables, The Box Car Children, and Little House on the Prairie. Although, writing always piqued my curiosity, it wasn’t until September 2009 that I worked up the courage to put my passion to paper and started my debut novel. With a love of history, it wasn’t hard for me to decide to pick the Historical Romance genre.

I live on a ranch with my husband, two daughters, and many farm animals. When I'm not writing, I spends my days from dawn to dusk as a stay at home, homeschooling mom. I also work in my garden and takes care of my many farm animals, as well as I love to bake and cook from scratch. While I don't show horses anymore, I still love to trail ride my paint horse, Honky, as well as I enjoy teaching my daughters how to ride their horses, Sunburst and Cowboy.

The woman on the painted horse is a brave novel that tackles some pretty hefty issues. The topic of the horrors of slavery is often avoided but Angela Christina Archer handles it beautifully. I found this book to be thought-provoking because of the empathy the author lends to the situations. The historical details are accurate and you really have the feeling that this book is a labour of love.

With the main issues mentioned, this novel is so much more. The love story at its core is heart warming and addictive.

The woman on the painted horse is a wonderful novel about hope, love and doing what is right regardless of the consequences. I really was moved by this novel and am giving it five stars.

Description from Amazon: Alexandra Monroe is a slave smuggler, smuggling slaves north where they can live as free people. Her crime is sedition and her punishment, if caught, is death. The daughter of one of the wealthiest men in Montgomery, Alexandra lives a life not by her own accord, but a life she willingly accepts for her secret quest to save the lives of slaves.
One afternoon, Alexandra comes face-to-face with handsome William Graysden. Although forbidden for his Creek Indian heritage, he captivates her. They fascinate one another, and ultimately find in each other a bond they don't wish to ignore. After a series of events, however, William must face the choice to continue the dangerous pursuit of Alexandra's affections or forget about her.

This book was very well written. The subject matter was kind of hard to read about in places, just because I'm so ashamed at how people used to treat others in the past. Alexandra finds out quickly that her parents' kind of love is not what she wants for herself and William shows her how real love is supposed to be. It was refreshing to not have all the steam that some authors are putting in their books. It didn't take away from the romance of the story at all.

I highly recommend this book. It was a very enjoyable read.

Debut author, Angela Christina Archer, took me back to a genteel age which is now an all-but-forgotten era, Southern life in the mid 1800's and the build up to the War Between the States. I was vested in the story early on, and the author's voice kept me turning the pages to find out what happened next. I especially love how this author handled major issues of that time (which are still issues in today's world) of slave runners, mixed racial relationships, and how those Southern attitudes and traditions throttled so many--yet, they persevered. I loved every minute of the ride along with THE WOMAN ON THE PAINTED HORSE, and look forward to this author's next release!

What a great read!

This was a wonderful book! I loved the story and how the characters came to life. I laughed and I cried reading this book. I felt anxious and joy during different scenes. This was a great book and it will be one I read over and over again. Great job Ms. Archer!

A mixture of a coming of age, romance (without smut, which made it even better), courage under fire, abusive relationships, and the historical South and her true abolitionists who put their lives on the line for the belief that no one should own another person and especially not treat those owned as if they were animals.
Alexandra finds her true love, someone her family and acquaintances would never find acceptable and perhaps one her suitor's clan might not like as well. Meanwhile, her emotionally estranged parents have literally sold her to the son of the town's richest man, to gain money lost to bad investments and a spendthrift wife, and she thinks it may be possible to use his fortune to help fund escaping slaves, so is willing to consider it...but only briefly, for Thomas, the son, is a brutal and abusive man, physically, emotionally, and mentally and shows his tendencies early on.
Alexandra's brother, John, and she have been allies, helping one another endure a loveless house all their lives so far, and John has his own love whom his parents would find as abhorrent as they would Alwxandra's beloved.
The book builds to an explosive climax. The only issues I believe some may find "draggy" are Alexandra's confused thoughts coupled with her courage, but I found her internal dialogs ebhanced the story and didn't drag at all.
I will be reading more of this author's books, and I want to thank her for giving us enough information to show the passions but not go through a blow-by-blow description of the act. I like a little mystery about a couple, and there is enough to show their love without showing unbridled lust.

Took a while

It took me a while to finish this book. Kept waiting for that ah ha moment and when it finally came in chapter 25 I got really confused. Almost like half the chapter was missing. Last we saw our hero he was tied up and the bad fiance was running off with the heroine to her dad. Then the hero suddenly appears to save the day with no explanation as to how he got there. Then there is the confusion as to how and where the rest of the characters got to where they are at the end.... I kept going back a few pages to see how I missed so much...

Started out intriguing enough. But, when she started waxing poetic deep feelings over and over again, my eyes start searching for quotation marks so I can get back to the story. My main concern is the woman, Alexandra getting beat up mercilessly at the end of the book. Slapped, bunched, kicked, dragged in the dirt, head slammed, choked, black and blue and then only complains of pain when she had pepples pressing into her knees when she is crawling.! Did a woman really write this ? Or did a gay man who hates woman write this under a false name?

Hella Quick Page-Turner...

Step on back to the pre-war south, just before the war breaks out. Locals are full of haughty ideals and prejudice against those they 'owned' or wished to look down on... Into this backdrop an unusual young lady comes of age, deep as an ocean, struggling against all she's expected to embrace and uphold... Who wins?? The establishment or the wide-eye, brave young woman??

Captivating

This book keeps you enthralled and not wanting to put it down. It is not all about the fun and games of the rich of the south during the civil war. The ugly truth comes out, despite all the lies and deceit from those who try to hide it. But the ending is very sweet for many in this heart rending story and very deserving for many others.

My Musings

An emotionally charged novel with compelling characters and an intriguing plot. It's been a while since I read a civil war novel, and this one is very good. Happy reading!

Loved this book. The corruption the plot, the setting and the characters were all in point. Heartbreaking but a happy ending.

The author tackles serious issues of the Civil War era, and the characters were well-defined. I wish we had more background on how this sheltered Southern belle came to have beliefs totally opposite of her family and how she got started smuggling slaves to freedom.

I have a real weak spot for historical fiction, but I haven't read much of it lately, so picking this one up and reading it was my choice completely. It's been on my kindle for quite a while, like many of the books I will be reading over this writing break I'm taking. I'm glad to get back to my favorite genre, and this book was a great way to return.
Set in the building civil war, Alexandra doesn't sympathize with her Alabama wealthy family roots. Instead, she loves the slave woman who raised her more than her own mother, and secretly smuggles slaves out of the state. While to the outside world, she's the well-bred daughter of a highly respected family, and her hand is being sought after by an even wealthier young man.
But Alexandra knows she can't live in a loveless marriage, despite how much her parents push the young man on her, turning a blind eyes to his less than savory characteristics. Instead, she falls in love with a Native American man, William, who is everything her intended lacks, but also everything she's not allowed to have.
Since I have my own Native American man who I love and married, I naturally felt connected with Alexandra's love and attraction to William. It saddened me to watch them struggle against not only her world, but his as well to be together. They were a couple who matched up brilliantly, although, their love didn't build up how I would have liked, rather they kind of jumped from avoiding one another to kissing in the blink of an eye. I wish there had been a little more sneaking around and love letters to really build up the connection.
But the story does do a wonderful job of expressing the horrors of slavery and prejudice in the Southern United States at that time. It's a time I'm truly glad I don't live in, and Alexandra did well to overcome the struggles she faced and continued to stand by her beliefs and not break and conform, which ultimately saved many lives. It's also a great story where the bad guy gets his in the end!

Let me start by saying that I am a a "start and stop" reader--meaning that when I read, I'll often stop. There are two reasons for this: First, I stop because something doesn't make sense, it's poorly written, or it makes me cringe. Second, I'll stop because something is so beautiful I need to read it over again. Woman on the Painted Horse falls into the second category. The writing was beautiful. I reread phrases over and over because they were so well-written. And it wasn't only the sentences that kept me reading. The story was engaging, thought provoking, and the characters were believable. I didn't feel like I was reading about stereotypical cardboard people. I cared for her characters and wanted them to succeed. I'll will definitely read anything else by Angela Christina Archer.

The Woman on the Painted Horse sucked me in from the first line to the last. I fell head-over-heels for the characters, and became part of their world. My heart beat with Alexandra's, and when her breath caught, so did mine. I love that this is a sweet romance, that delves into the relationships of Alexandra and several of the townspeople, the hero, and the protagonist.
Angela took her time in crafting a thoroughly researched historical romance, and she took me back in time - a time when, with a few tweaks, I wish I had lived.
Thank you for such a wonderful journey Angela, I cannot wait to read your next novel!!

Why does a wealthy Southern debutante rebel against her upbringing and decide to smuggle out slaves? What an interesting question. Too bad it was never answered in the book. And without motivation, this book is a collection of chess pieces being moved around by the author.

Some of the supporting characters, especially the villains, have better characterization.

This book can't decide whether it's Serious Fiction or romance. You don't have to pick one or the other, but the shifts back and forth are quite jarring.

While the potential for a good story was there, I don't feel this book quite made it. To me it seemed disjointed and erratic. And large parts didn't make sense. Mainly, how did Alexandra spend so much time out of the house and no one noticed? As a sheltered southern belle, it doesn't seem to me that would be possible.

Wonderful!

Angela Christina Archer is an author who know her subject well, and is a master at the craft of story telling. I usually do not care for first-person novels but this tense, in Ms Archer's most capable hands, is extremely well written and very profound. I will be looking for more books written by her to read.

I was under the impression this was a book about the Underground Railroad. It isn't. It's a romance book, which is fine, but not what I was looking for in this book. It's really more a story about loving someone unacceptable. It was an ok book, not a favorite, but ok.

This could have been a much better book with more background info and a bit less internal dialogue. For instance, it would have been interesting to know how Alexandra began rescuing slaves. The ending also seemed rushed and left too many unanswered questions.

Very enjoyable book

Can't imagine living in the time when women's choices were not their own. Romantic, heroic, and full of thoughts you will continue to think about as you are thankful for the right to make your own choices.

Great story

A very different story about the 1860s and the woes of slavery in that time . Also of the way that the Indians that still lived in Alabama were treated as wrongly by many people. Very unusual but interesting story.

Characters: William and Alexandra
The story was ok. It was interesting in a historical way, but the romance wasn't as good as it could have been. I had a hard time getting into the story at first, but towards the end, some exciting things started to happen and then it was better.

Knowing this was fiction, I still learned lots about the era, the intense feelings each person carried, and the improper love stories.
